• Food — non-perishable, easy to prepare items. Include a manual can opener (or a multi-purpose tool).

• Flashlights — include extra batteries and make sure the flashlight is functional. Candles can be included but must only be used by adults and never by children. Keep candles away from flammable material (such as curtains).

• First-Aid Kit — include essential medications and required medical items.

If you have medication that needs to be refrigerated, consult with your pharmacist for guidance on proper storage during an extended outage.

• A battery-powered or hand-crank clock and radio.

• Blankets and warm clothing.

At this time, SaskPower does not anticipate any extended outages as a result of the current cold temperatures.

Weather modeling data indicates that parts of central and northern Saskatchewan could see wetter than normal conditions between December and March, and near normal precipitation for the rest of Saskatchewan.

Due to minimal runoff in spring 2021 followed by what was generally a hot and dry summer, most agricultural areas of the province are currently experiencing drier than normal moisture conditions.

Conditions are the driest starting in the central area of the province around Saskatoon and extending in a southwesterly direction toward Rosetown, down through Leader and then to the Maple Creek area.

While most larger water supply reservoirs across southern and central Saskatchewan have adequate supplies, some surface water users who rely on smaller reservoirs or dugouts have been impacted by the dry conditions.

Below normal rainfall was also received across the north throughout the 2021 growing season.

With the wet conditions in 2020, water levels remained high throughout the first half of the year but have since tapered to near normal heading into freeze-up. Winter flows in northern areas are expected to continue to drop to slightly below normal over the course of the winter.

I n S a s k a t c h ewa n ’s grain belt region where conditions at freezeup were much drier, the capacity of the soils and

storage capacity within wetland areas will be higher, reducing the risk of above normal runoff come spring.

At this time, there are no areas where the Water Security Agency (WSA) believes that there is a heightened risk of abovenormal spring runoff in 2022. Current long-range forecasts and climate indices suggest near normal to above normal precipitation and below normal temperatures over the winter months for much of the province. However, given the current moisture conditions, even an above normal snowpack is not likely to yield an abovenormal snowmelt runoff.

WSA issues the Conditions at Freeze up Report during the late fall/ early winter period.

Freeze-up conditions, in combination with the winter snowpack, becomes the initial base for the spring snowmelt runoff forecast.

This report gives an early indication of areas that are more vulnerable to potentially above or below normal runoff in the spring.

It is not a spring runoff forecast, as winter snow accumulation is an integral component in the runoff yield during the melt and is impossible to predict at this juncture.

Modeling is compiled with data from various sources including Environment and Climate Change Canada and the U.S. National Weather Service.

The initial Spring Runoff Outlook for 2022 will be issued in early February.

MANY REASONS TO LOOK FORWARD TO A NEW YEAR Sabrina Kraft skraft@weyburnreview.com

I

t is hard to believe that tomorrow morning will be the first day of 2022! The past year seemed to go by so quickly, and in some ways this was a good thing, as our communities continued to deal with the hardships and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are many reasons to look forward to a new year, and for many people it is a chance to make resolutions or set goals for themselves.

It is important that if you are one to make resolutions that it is something attainable, since it can be a good feeling when you have achieved a goal that you have made.

The best advice to give others is to make several small goals to a larger year-end resolution. It is a lot easier to celebrate achieving small steps along the way, and gives you motivation to keep working to achieving the larger goal in mind.

It is also important to reflect on past resolutions, and evaluate why those goals were either possible to achieve, or if you had set the bar too high and abandoned the resolution. There is nothing wrong about changing your resolution either, especially if you realize that your expectations were too high when compared to realizations.

There are some common resolutions, such as financial management, physical fitness improvement, or even the new ‘Take A Break’ campaign to spend

less time on Social Media.

The important thing is that when you are making a resolution it is something that will truly improve your own life, or empower yourself. If you are taking a common resolution, personalize it for your life, and you will have a much better chance of achieving it.

As we reflect on the past year, there might be some moments of regret or sadness, especially for those who have lost someone close to them. It is important to try to focus on the good things in your life at the same time, and take the time to focus on that positivity as we embark into a new year.

Those individuals who take the time to have ‘Memory Jars’ should be applauded, where they put little notes of special memories or events that had happened during the year, and then celebrate those events by opening the jar on New Year’s Eve. It is a creative and fun way of celebrating the small moments that happened, and remind yourself of the good in your life.

One of the biggest hopes is that we will start to see the light at the end of the tunnel, when it comes to COVID-19 restrictions and mandates. It is hoped that the provincial government has learned from previous ‘Re-Open Mandates’ that unfortunately pushed us back into restriction mode.

We still need to work together as communities to get through this situation, and there will come a time when it is safer for us to remove the masks. We just have to be patient and understanding.

Another Christmas has passed and another new year is facing us. While the season of giving gifts may officially be over, peace, patience and encouragement are never out of season. Nor is this week’s offering.

Showing gratitude and consideration of others can never be out of season or inappropriate, and that’s what I’d like to pass along to you this week and also remind myself of its value.

Sometimes I look hard and long for quotes or examples to illustrate my words, but that’s not necessary this weekend.

As unusual as it is for us living here on the West Coast, this morning we had a good dump of the white stuff.

A phone call from a new neighbour wondered if we had a snow shovel and, if so, could her husband come over and borrow it.

the strength required to clear the steps of sidewalk so I was happy to let him use it.

There was no pressure or request that he do our work, however, I was just glad it could be used.

Looking out a bit later I realized he’d also done our sidewalks, front steps and the community sidewalk in front of our house. I call that gratitude and consideration for others.

While that’s an example of an act of consideration, this gift comes in many sizes and types, and it can be conveyed in both big and small ways.

Let’s be alert to look for it as well as demonstrate it gratitude and consideration. Whether others respond isn’t important, how we do, is.

Red Wings-Bruins ‘Huston Classic’ postponed due to COVID The Estevan Bruins and Weyburn Red Wings will be postponing the games for the Tom Huston Classic, that are scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 1.

The teams have players that are deemed close con-

tacts with positive COVID cases, and as a precautionary measure these games will be played at a later date.

All tickets for postponed games will be valid on the new game date once rescheduled.

One of the biggest farming families in the area is retiring

By Anastasiia Bykhovskaia One of the biggest farms in the Estevan area is up for sale.

Earlier this year, the Hanson family, who farms near Torquay on Highway 18, completed their final harvest and decided to retire, selling their property in what will be the biggest unreserved auction in Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers’ history.

“We’ve done some very large complete farm dispersals, including real estate before. But this actually will be the largest unreserved farm auction in Ritchie Brothers’ history,” said Brandon Basler, the agriculture territory manager for southeast Saskatchewan with Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers.

“We’re very proud that the Hanson family placed their trust in Ritchie Brothers to deliver results and put on this auction.

We’re very honoured to have the sale and we really look forward to it.”

The current three generations, Lorne, Kirby and Connor Hanson, have been working the land in southeast Saskatchewan almost all their lives.

“Connor (the youngest generation) started running a combine when he was seven,” said Kirby Hanson.

Lorne Hanson started farming in 1968 and kept on going for over 50 years.

The decision to get out of the business wasn’t an easy one, but his son Kirby said, “at the end (Lorne) was for it.”

The idea to sell the farm came a few years ago when a Hutterite colony reached out to the Hansons, willing to buy them out. While that deal never came through, the thought of retiring from farming took root.

And once the decision was made, things started rolling. Hansons got Ritchie Bros. to take care of the sale, so they could focus on other things.

“We felt relieved. We seeded 18,000 acres for a lot of years, praying for rain and praying that grasshoppers don’t eat your crop. We did it lots and enjoyed it.

And we’ll get to do something else now, enjoy our life, enjoy our summer instead of work like a dog all summer,” Kirby said.

Kirby’s sister, Lorne’s daughter Christine Hanson-Daae, came out to the field on Sept. 4 to take some pictures during the family’s final harvest.

On that day, she also was wearing overalls that belonged to their little sister, who was a big part of Hanson Farms too, but unfortunately passed away from cancer in 2002.

“I am wearing her overalls in the photo, keeping her memory alive,” Christine said.

Hanson Farms saw five generations of men and women dedicating their lives to growing crops and at some point, raising cattle in this part of the province. Lorne’s grandfather, Carl Bod, came to Canada from Sweden when he was 17 years old. The first job he got in the new country was as a carpenter. He was working until he finally got some homestead land out by Lake Alma.

Bod started the farm and raised the family. He kept buying and renting land throughout his life.

He later moved to Torquay, where the farmland was better.

When Lorne’s father got out of the army after the Second World War, he and his wife, Lorne’s mother, started farming as well, but they always lived in Torquay. Later Lorne moved to his grandfather’s farm and continued with the family business, raising his children and grandchildren in farming traditions.

Now that they turn this page of their lives, the Hansons plan to enjoy some spare time they never really had before.

“We bought a place at Boundary Dam, we’ll be living at the lake. It’ll be good,” Kirby said.

He added they may travel to Arizona or up north,

but they plan to stay in the Estevan area, where their kids and grandkids are.

It was decided to have the final accord and have the auction in January.

“We just felt January would be the best, as it gives everyone time to revise a plan because you just can’t hop into it right away; you need a few months to get ready,” Kirby said.

“Hopefully whoever buys the land, enjoys it.”

The Hanson Farms auction will be conducted by Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers and will see a great variety of land parcels and bid items.

“We have a land auction included with equipment. The land is 9,600 titled acres of high producing farmland, it includes home quarter with two houses, large, heated shop, 500,000-bushel grain handling facility. Many of the parcels have surface lease revenue. There is 59 parcels in total, being 61 quarters of land that’s going to be up for sale. And then (a) great lineup of late model farm equipment included as well,” explained Basler with Ritchie Brothers.

The land sale will be held on Jan. 25, and the lineup of equipment will be sold on Jan. 26. Everything will be sold online via timed auction at Ritchie Brothers’ website.

Protection against harassment comes into effect on Jan. 1 Students, contract workers and volunteers in the province will now be protected against harassment including sexual harassment while in the workplace.

Legislation will come into force on January 1, 2022, that clarifies that the definition of harassment includes any unwelcome action of a sexual nature.

In addition, independent contractors, students and volunteers will be included in the definition of workers protected from any form of harassment.

“This legislation will ensure that contract workers, students and volunteers can go to their jobs without concerns about being exposed to harassment,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. “We want to protect all workers from harassment and create safe, healthy workplaces.”

Additional amendments to The Saskatchewan Employment Act include:

• removing the requirement for the Labour Relations Board to exclude supervisory employees from the same bargaining unit as those they supervise unless the employer and union have entered an irrevocable election.

Instead, the board will be given authority to determine the appropriate bargaining unit, which may include a unit comprised only of supervisors. Transition provisions have been included which authorize the board to hear applications from employers or unions to amend existing certification orders which exclude supervisors from the bargaining units; and • providing protection for public and private sector employers that comply with the new COVID-19 vaccination regulations that provides employees with the choice of showing evidence of being fully vaccinated or evidence of a negative COVID-19 test at least every seven days.

The dawn of a new year is a great time to take stock of the year that just passed and set goals for the next 12 months. Resolutions focused on improving personal health are especially popular, and for good reason. Improving one’s overall health can have positive implications for years to come.

Even with the best intentions, resolutions have historically proven hard to keep. Simplifying healthbased resolutions can lead to a higher success rate and a healthier you.

• Walk more. It is easy to get preoccupied with the “10,000 steps per day” mantra that many people follow and that certain fitness trackers promote.

Walking 10,000 steps daily, which equates to roughly five miles per day, is a healthy goal, but it may not be realistic for everyone. Take stock of how many steps you currently

take each day, and then resolve to walk 2,000 more.

As your body acclimates to walking more, add another 2,000 steps, continuing to do so until you reach 10,000 steps.

• Learn something new about being healthy. Informed health decisions require gaining a greater understanding of your body. Rely on a reputable source such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to learn more about how to be healthy.

• Spend less time on social media. Staring at your phone or tablet for multiple hours browsing tweets or checking messages might not be the best thing for your physical and mental health. Browsing the internet may take up time that could be better spent engaging in physical activity. According to Dr. Elia Abi-Jaoude, a staff psychiatrist at the Hospital for Sick Children and Toronto

Western Hospital, various studies have shown how excessive social media usage can adversely affect relationships, sense of self, sleep, academic performance, and emotional wellbeing.

• Eat more whole foods.

Whole foods, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fish, contain various nutrients the body needs to function at peak capacity. These foods may help reduce the risk of many diseases and help people maintain healthy body weights. Start slowly by introducing a new whole food to your diet each day. A gradual approach is more manageable than going on a drastic diet.

• Avoid sweetened beverages. You are what you eat, but also what you drink. A report published in 2006 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found consumption of sugar-sweetened bever-

ages, particularly carbonated soft drinks, may be a key contributor in the epidemic of overweight and obesity.

Skip sweetened beverages (even fruit juices can be unhealthy if consumed in excess) and opt for more water or unsweetened teas.

• Find a physical activity you like. Rather than resolving to join the gym or signing up for a 5K because it’s what everyone is doing, find a physical activity you truly enjoy and aim to do it a few times a week. Maybe it’s a sport like tennis or recreational cycling with the family. But if the idea of a gym membership excites you, then by all means sign up.

Avoid restrictive health and wellness resolutions that can be unsustainable.

By downsizing expectations and taking small steps en route to your goals, you may be more motivated to stay the course and realize your resolutions.
