Welcome Dear Members, As we enjoy the last days of summer and look forward to the arrival of fall, I would be remiss to not thank the Golf Course Agronomy team for their hard work and dedication to our Summer Aerification practices. While golf course closures are not always convenient, these agronomy practices are important for the future growth and stability of our golf course as well as the playability conditions for the fall. I am also pleased with the progress of the Pickleball and Clubhouse Front Entry project. The front entrance is complete and our four new pickleball courts are taking shape. We anticipate playing on these courts in the fall. In club news, we look forward to hosting you for our Labor Day Weekend Celebration at the Poolside Party on Saturday and an All-American lunch and dinner option Sunday. I also encourage you to participate or attend the many other events taking place this month including the Fireball Doubles Championship, the September 11th Tribute, FloatTails and our many golf events. I would like to take a moment and introduce Kathryn Clemmons, our new Director of Marketing and Member Services. Kathryn has an extensive background in marketing and most recently joins us from Northstar Travel Group. Please take a moment and welcome Kathryn to Wexford when you see her around the club and community. While the coronavirus continues to be a threat and impact the nation, we are aware of the recent, national surge in COVID-19 cases and our continued responsibility for maintaining a safe workplace for our staff and a safe club for our members. We remain vigilant in monitoring state regulations and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and will let you know as more information becomes available.

Ryan Spence Chief Operating Officer

Our entire leadership team remains steadfast in our recruiting efforts for quality team members to join Wexford. Wexford currently has several positions open across all departments and is actively recruiting through a variety of channels including online recruiting platforms and increasing our employee referral and signing bonuses for new team members. We are participating in local job fairs and working closely with our local colleges to increase our recruiting capabilities. Employee retention is equally important. We recently hosted an Employee Town Hall Meeting and Appreciation event for our team members. We also have several employee recognition programs that are ongoing throughout the year. I appreciate your support and patience while we navigate this nationwide staffing shortage as you may experience small service disruptions. A special thank you to the many members who have sent messages of encouragement and positivity over the past few months and when you have a moment, please thank our dedicated staff that consistently shows up to work to serve you in the best way they can. I look forward to seeing you at the club.

Regards,

Ryan

Letter from the Board President Hello Neighbors, Labor Day is Here – It seems like yesterday I was writing the message of summer being here and now it’s almost over! But that doesn’t mean the summer fun is done here at Wexford. Our great staff has lots of activities, pool parties, special dining opportunities and much more for us all to enjoy. Give it a try with your friends and neighbors.

David Jackson

Yacht Club - Docktails and trip to President Daufuskie – The Yacht Club has a couple of cool events planned for early September, a Docktails party on September 7, the Tuesday after Labor Day, and a lunch trip to Daufuskie on Wednesday, September 8. I encourage you to attend at least one of these events and enjoy the ever-growing boating community here at Wexford – whether you have a boat or not!

Men’s Member-Guest – The largest ever Men’s MemberGuest starts on Thursday, September 30 and will use the course for three days. A total of 72 teams, 144 golfers, will navigate our Wexford golf links trying to outduel their friends and neighbors in an attempt to win this prestigious event. Even if you’re not playing, come out and watch the final shootout on Saturday afternoon, it’s always a fun time. Facilities Plan - Town Hall Meeting – Thanks to the over 150 owners who attended, either in person or via Zoom,

the town hall meeting on Friday, July 23. We presented the latest draft of a plan to improve several of our facilities by the architect and our strategic planners. There were some great questions asked and we have received some good comments. We appreciate all the feedback to date and are still collecting your comments which will be published shortly. We currently are in consultation with our architect to develop some alternate plans to address some of the comments we heard and will present both the original and the alternates for consideration to smaller focus groups over the next few weeks. We understand it is an important investment in our future here at Wexford and continue to gather as much information as possible. Pickleball/Entrance Project is Going Great – If you’ve been around the Clubhouse area lately, you know our contractors are moving quickly on the Clubhouse entrance relocation and Pickleball Court construction project. Weather can cause problems at any time but it looks good for on-time and on-budget completion. We look forward to playing on some real pickleball courts soon!

All the best,

David

Wexford Honors Departing Board Members In December, Wexford owners will be given the opportunity, as well as the responsibility, to elect three new Directors to replace David Jackson, Hilary Drammis and Rick Anderson who are completing their Board terms. As you consider the candidates on this year’s ballot, we believe it is important that you do that in a context of familiarity with the background, experience and roles of the outgoing Directors during their tenure. Hopefully, you will be able to use this information to help evaluate this year’s candidates and their qualifications from a more informed perspective. David, Hilary and Rick have generously shared their knowledge, talent and time on the Board for the last three years and in particular, during the extremely demanding Covid pandemic. They all deserve our appreciation for their contributions to the Wexford community.

Rick Anderson

The Club Times • 4

Rick Anderson is a graduate of Villanova University with a BS in Economics. He was married in 1967 and has two children and four grandchildren. Following graduation, he entered the United States Army and served in Vietnam as an Infantry Lieutenant, advising the South Vietnamese on logistics, training and military tactics. He is the recipient of the Combat infantry Badge and Bronze Star Medal. After spending time in the wine industry, he joined his family’s chauffeured services business in New York City, eventually merging it with the world’s largest limousine network. During that time, Rick served on numerous industry boards and received a number of awards as an industry leader and innovator. With a partner, he founded a consulting business to assist limousine companies with business operations, saving one from bankruptcy.

As President of the Wexford Yacht Club, and with assistance of both the WYC and the HOA boards, Rick oversaw the successful merger of the two entities in 2015. He has also served as Commodore of the Yacht Club, on the ASC, House & Social and Long-Range Planning Committees. During Rick’s three years on the Board, he has served as both Marketing and Yacht Club liaison. Additionally, he promoted the leasing of slips on Dock 9, the upgrade of shore power on all harbour piers, the marketing program for the harbour, the updating of the Harbour Policy & Procedures Manual and championed a fairer quarterly shore power fee initiative. Along with the rest of the Board, he dealt with the myriad of issues relating to COVID-19.

Hilary Drammis Dr. Hilary Drammis is a clinical psychologist with a Ph.D in behavioral and family systems therapy. She is also a diplomat in forensic psychology and a sports psychologist. Hilary was the president and CEO of Buzas Enterprises which owned and operated a AAA professional baseball team while serving as managing partner of Jay-Hil Enterprises, a food and beverage service company. She also worked as a psychologist for the Association of Certified Psychologists in a private practice group in Chicago and as consultant for the Larry H. Miller Group which owned the Utah Jazz. Hilary spent many vacations in Hilton Head and fell in love with the area and Lowcountry lifestyle. She moved to Wexford in 2008. Hilary loves the community and has developed several wonderful friendships on the tennis courts and at the Clubhouse over the years. During her time on the Wexford Board of Directors, Hilary was the chair of the Governance Committee and

Tennis Committee. She currently sits on the House and Social Committee. Hilary is proud to have been elected and serve the Wexford community she loves so much. She believes the most important trait for future Board members is the willingness to listen to the membership and voice their opinions.

David Jackson David Jackson spent his 38-year career in the engineering business, starting in local government in Tennessee before moving to Atlanta to join an engineering consulting business then spending the last 20 years as owner of a consulting engineering business with offices in Georgia and Tennessee before retiring at the end of 2016. After vacationing at Hilton Head for about 15 years, David took the plunge and bought a lot in Wexford in 2012, then completed a house here in 2014. He thought then and still thinks that Wexford is the most beautiful community in the Lowcountry along with having the most interesting and welcoming neighbors. David first got involved in Wexford governance by serving on the Infrastructure Committee before being elected to serve on the Board of Directors in December 2018. While on the Board, David has served as chair of the Infrastructure Committee, Long Range Planning Committee and Golf Committee and has served as President of the Board in 2020 and 2021. David is proud and thankful for the experience of Board membership, especially during the turbulent Covid-19 pandemic times, but is excited for the future of Wexford with the influx of new and energetic owners and our strong and dedicated management team. He now looks forward to really being retired and playing more golf here at Wexford.

Tips for Hurricane Preparation

The Club Times • 8

As we near the peak of hurricane season, boat owners should start to think seriously about how they will prepare their boats for a possible hurricane. This year due to the increase of boats in the harbour, the harbour staff will only be able to run lines across the canals for boats behind homes and will be unable to adjust or add lines to those boats not adequately tied. For all boats behind homes, please ensure you have enough line in your boat, or at a place you have already communicated to the harbour staff, to reach across the canal. If you are leaving for more than a couple of days between now and the end of October, please ensure

your boat is properly secured for a significant wind event or hurricane. This means doubling your lines at the bow and the stern, leaving enough slack to allow for a storm surge and ensuring you have long — at least the length of your boat — spring lines attached. If you have a durable cover make sure it is properly fitted. In the past, smaller boats from behind homes have been relocated and secured on Pier 9. Currently, Pier 9 is almost full so this is no longer an option. If you have jet skis, please put them on trailers and store them in your garage. Also, make sure your jet ski docks can be identified. This can be as simple as writing your address

UPCOMING EVENTS September 7 DockTails September 8 Daufuskie Lunch Trip September 17 FloatTails September 22 Harbour Seminar: Learn to Fish! on the jet ski dock in permanent marker. If you need additional guidance on tying your boat, please refer to Section 4 in the Wexford Yachting Guide.

Above: Capt. Bill Haverland aboard “Finally” Right: A map showing Elliott Cut, just south of Charleston Harbor

“Finally” Saves the Day On July 16, a group of Wexford vessels left Charleston Harbour returning home after a 5-day trip to Georgetown, South Carolina. Capt. Bill Haverland and crew Terry Baehr were aboard Bill’s boat “Finally” leading a flotilla that included Rick and Shari Anderson aboard “Blue Moon” and Jerry and Cathy Sumpter aboard “Cat’s Diamond”. Upon entering Elliott Cut, a narrow canal surrounded by stone bulkheads and docks just past Charleston Harbor, Bill noticed a small runabout anchored in the middle of the channel. The occupants of the boat were waving and pointing to something in the water. Bill and Terry noticed a man in the water struggling against an extraordinarily strong current being swept away from his anchored boat. Bill came to the aid of the man by maneuvering “Finally” to the man’s location. Bill’s excellent boathandling skills kept his 44-foot boat from running over the man in the tricky current. Terry was ready to assist, throwing the man a line, pulling him to the boat and helping him get aboard. It was apparent to all that the individual was exhausted.

After “Finally” rescued the man from the water, they had to continue forward and leave the “cut” to open water to turn around. The cut was too narrow and the current was too swift to turn within it. Heading back to the anchored boat, “Finally” could not pull next to the boat because of the current so they had to pull ahead of it and get as close as safely possible. They instructed the people in the boat to prepare a line to throw to the man as he drifted by them. That strategy worked perfectly and the man was immediately pulled into his boat after jumping back into the water off of “Finally”. “Finally” then had to proceed forward up to a wide spot in the cut in order to turn around again and continue the trip home. As “Finally” passed by the anchored boat, the people in the boat waved and cheered, thanking “Finally” and its Captain and crew for saving their shipmate! There are many boating safety lessons to be learned from this story including wearing life vests and jackets, understanding currents, having competent boathandling skills and being on the lookout for unexpected things while on the water. This story has a happy ending thanks to some quick thinking and skillful tactics on behalf of Bill and Terry. Congratulations to “Finally” and her crew for a job well done!

9 • The Club Times

Once aboard “Finally”, the man told Terry he was scared of how close he had come to a more serious ending. The man had fallen overboard while trying to repair his boat’s engine and was not wearing a life vest and was immediately in peril. The man said even as a strong swimmer, he had no chance of swimming back

to his anchored boat due to the current. He told Terry the next time he is going to put on a life jacket.

Please watch your speed, heed traffic signs Stop signs require a driver, bicyclist, or a golf cart operator to bring their mode of transportation to a complete stop and rest. A complete stop provides an opportunity to check for oncoming traffic and to look for children or other pedestrians who may be crossing the roadway. By statute, pedestrians have the right of way at any intersection or crosswalk. Golfers are reminded to stop along the posted areas of the golf course, as a vehicle traveling along the roadway may not have the time to stop for you.

13 • The Club Times

Traffic safety continues to be a concern here at Wexford. The Security department monitors and collects data, which shows most vehicles obey the speed limits; however, some vehicles are speeding at a range of 5-11 miles over the posted speed limit with a few above. With the narrowness of the roadways, along with the many golf carts, bicyclists, joggers, walkers and children traveling on or near the roadways, we encourage all to use extra caution and to drive within the posted speed limits.
