First, I want to wish Chef Frank Copeland all the best as he starts a new chapter in his career. From the Passport Series and private events, to holiday parties and charity functions, Chef Frank has been a fixture at the Clubhouse as not only our beloved chef but as great leader, mentor and friend. Thank you, Chef Frank, for your 18 years of service to the membership. We have hired Interim Executive Chef George Rockwell who has been a private club Executive Chef for over 30 years and joins us from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Chef George will work with our current culinary team to create stability until our new Executive Chef Josh Goetz begins later this month. I thank you in advance for your patience as we transition the culinary leadership team. Second, I am pleased to announce some additions to the Wexford Leadership. Ian Munroe has joined Wexford as our new Director of Club Operations. He has worked in the private club industry for 18 years and has a strong background in world-class food and beverage operations along with court sports, marina and facilities management. As the Director of Club Operations, Ian’s leadership oversight will include Food & Beverage, Harbour, Tennis, Housekeeping and Maintenance Operations. We have also hired a

new Sous Chef Colby Todd. Colby previously served as Head Chef at The Landings Palmetto Club and will start on October 4th. Please take a moment and welcome Ian and Colby when you see them around the club. And finally, as I mentioned before, our team is busy preparing for the many events taking place across all our amenities this month. I want to wish all the members that are participating in the upcoming Men’s and Ladies Member Guest tournaments the best of luck. I also encourage you all to attend the Wexford Yacht Club’s Boat Commissioning Ceremony as well as the DockTails Oyster Roast. And candidly, I’m looking forward to seeing the creative costumes and experiencing the Spooktacular Halloween event on October 30th. See you at the club!

Ryan

Letter from the Board President Hello Neighbors, Cheers to Cooler Temperatures and Returning Members — After a warm summer including several days with the heat index in excess of 110 degrees, I’m sure we all welcome the cooler temperatures in October. It’s truly one of the best times to be in Wexford. The golf course has recovered from the summer maintenance breaks and is in David Jackson pristine condition for the tournament President season. Also, it’s a time to welcome back many members that spend the summer in cooler climates so say hello to some neighbors we haven’t seen in a few months. Maybe even head to the pool bar to catch up and enjoy the weather at the same time. New F&B Team Members — We have several new F&B team members joining us lead by Ian Munroe, our new Director of Club Operations. Ian comes to us from The Landings Palmetto Club, where he was the Clubhouse Manager over a $4M food and beverage operation and brings lots of energy, creativity and new ideas to Wexford. We have also hired new Sous Chef, Colby Todd and Executive Chef Josh Goetz. Colby worked with Ian at The Landings Palmetto Club as a Clubhouse Chef and comes to us with great credentials. Executive Chef Josh Goetz has an outstanding resume, including The Savoy and Tocqueville in New York City and 10 years as the

Budget Season — Your Wexford board members and management team are hard at work to develop an operating and capital budget for 2022. These last couple of years have been challenging to say the least with the Covid-19 pandemic changing the way we all interact and operate and seemingly bringing new variables monthly. There is pricing pressure in goods, services and labor that we all have seen in our daily lives and Wexford is not immune to those pressures. Board members are Wexford owners too and subject to the same dues and fees we all pay and are working diligently to maximize efficiency and deliver real value for our dues. Halloween Spooktacular — Halloween is a fun time at Wexford so be sure to participate in the excitement as all the little ghosts and goblins take over our community for a day. The trick-or-treat stations that Wexford owners set up at their homes to make sure there are no “tricks” seem to get more elaborate each year and are a growing tradition. Get out and see what the fun is all about.

All the best,

David

Employee of the Quarter We would like to recognize and congratulate Latasha Glover for being nominated by her colleagues and selected by management as the Employee of the Quarter for her outstanding performance and exceptional work. Latasha works in the Security Department and was promoted last year to Sergeant.

Don’t bother the gators — report them By Mark Dryden With so many new members joining our community at Wexford I think it prudent to explain our co-existence with alligators on the golf course and in the harbour. Alligators are a threatened species. They were recently upgraded from endangered but are still protected; however, South Carolina allows for the management of alligators that display aggressive behavior. As humans have populated Hilton Head Island, we have moved into the habitat of the American Alligator. This means more frequent sightings and interactions with the creatures as our golf courses and storm water drainage match their natural habitat with a couple of major differences — the water is clearer and the food easier to catch. Wexford has developed a set of standard operating procedures to deal with our reptilian neighbors. Most of the time, gators only stay in the harbour for a relatively short time of 2 to 3 days then they return to their freshwater ponds. There are of course exceptions as some gators tolerate the salt water better than others. Over the past few years, gator sightings have increased and we

have been diligent about tracking them and ensuring we identify them when they become aggressive. If a gator is sighted in the harbour, I take note of the animal’s size, location, and any identifying marks, as well as who reports him. These details are recorded, and I continue to monitor the gator. If he does become aggressive, we will contact a wildlife removal service.

take lightly the euthanasia of any creature and it is a consequence of last resort.

As I have said, the alligator is a protected species; however, when we remove an alligator they are euthanized. It has been found that relocation is rarely successful as the creature tends to find his way back to the area he was taken from.

There are of course ways we can deter alligators from entering the harbour. First, I keep the salinity in the harbour as high as I can, currently it is about 30% salinity and the ocean is about 34%. But the most important way to discourage an alligator is not to feed it. If you observe an alligator while you are fishing, pull in your line and call it a day. Do not throw fish back to the alligator and don’t cast to it. This behavior will encourage the alligator to stay longer in the harbour and associate the harbour as an easy source of food.

Because of this I try to give alligators in Wexford a chance to pass through in their own time. This has been a successful strategy as we have only had to remove two alligators in the last six years. I don’t

So, if you see an alligator, in the harbour, observe it from a safe distance, get a photo if you can, see if you can identify any markings or scars, then report it to the Harbour Center.

Wexford Yacht Club News Inshore Fishing Tournament October 9 Wexford’s Annual Inshore Fishing Tournament will be held October 9th. The best two combined redfish, sea trout, or flounder wins! Weigh-ins will take place on the pool deck between 4:00pm and 5:00pm with live entertainment. Captain’s meeting is on Friday, October 8th, at 4:00pm at the Harbour Center and will include basic information for new fishermen and women on where and how to catch fish for the tournament. This is a great learning opportunity for new and experienced anglers! Sign up with the Harbour Center to register your boat.

Boat Commissioning October 10 | Cocktails: 5:00pm | Ceremony: 6:00pm All Yacht Club Members — that means everyone — are invited to attend the 11th Annual Boat Commissioning Ceremony. The Boat Commissioning is Wexford’s way of welcoming new boats into the Harbour. If you brought a new boat into the Wexford Harbour this year, we will present you with a ceremonial bottle to break over your bow. The event kicks off with cocktails on the docks and a brief ceremony followed by a fabulous dinner at the Clubhouse closing out the evening. Reservations required, full dinner details in the Clubhouse Corner section on page 4. If you don’t have a boat, it’s even more fun because you can enjoy cocktails and dinner without actually having to do anything! This is always a sell-out event of boat owners and non-boat owners, so sign up early!

DockTails Oyster Roast The Club Times • 8

October 19 | 5:00pm All Wexford members are invited to attend the DockTails Oyster Roast on Tuesday, October 19. Bring your favorite drinks, hor d’oeuvres to share and enjoy an evening on the docks with old friends and new. Oysters and fun will be provided.

Harbour Seminar: Moving a Boat Sideways (Docking) October 20 | 3:00pm Every boater’s encountered it: crowded parking at the fuel dock or some other popular facility. Attend October’s seminar and learn how you can dock like a pro. And guess what? You don’t need thrusters. Call the Harbour Center to sign up.

SAVE THE DATE Beaufort and Bohicket Overnight November 10-11 Beaufort; November 12-13 Bohicket The Wexford Yacht Club is once again visiting historic Beaufort for a two-night stay followed by an optional additional two-night stay at Bohicket on Seabrook Island. Several rooms have been set aside at “The Anchorage 1770”, a bed and breakfast located directly across the street from the Beaufort Marina, for non-boaters and boaters who choose to not sleep aboard. Participants may decide to only attend the Beaufort portion of the trip or may opt to continue on to Bohicket. Slips are in high demand and limited at Bohicket, thus

this portion of the trip can only accommodate a maximum of 4 boats. There is no limitation on slips at the Beaufort marina at this point. The Bohicket Marina has a variety of different restaurants and shops and is within walking distance of

Fresh Fields Village Kiawah. For those non-boaters who wish to join the fun, please reach out to Mark Dryden who will connect you with a Captain. More details coming soon! Please contact Barbara Mantilia with any questions.

Drop the pencil, stay in the moment by Scott Hunter You may have heard me talk about keeping track of your score, or more importantly not tallying your score as you play. One thing I stick to when playing is I never add up my score at any point during the round. Keep yourself in the moment and do not think ahead about what your score may be if you continue your good (or poor) play. I would recommend waiting until the end of the round before you start the tally and bypass the 10th tee.

low down and watch your toss! You’ve heard of hand-eye coordination? Let’s call this the hand-eye connection. Pay close attention to where you are looking as you toss the ball. If you are already looking up above your head before the ball gets there, that may be the problem.

As you start your service motion, watch the ball in your hand all the way through the toss motion and into the air. This simple connection between your eyes, brain and hand will make your toss placement more consistent.

PICKLEBALL TIP

Winner’s Circle

Congratulations to our Wexford Ladies Combo tennis team celebrating the end of their winning season. They will be playing in Aiken at USTA SC States in November!

If you are new to pickleball you may want to try out lots of different shots you’ve seen other more advanced players use on the court. Or maybe shots that friends have taught you or that you’ve even learned in private pickleball lessons. But mixing all these shots randomly during a game can be a quick way to lose a lot of points. Limit the Lob: The lob shot is the most over-used shot in pickleball. Using it too often takes away the most important aspect – the element of surprise – and lobbing too often will allow your opponent to anticipate it and crush you with it. Reserve this shot and use sparingly to win points. Stick to the “D’s”: Dinks and Dropshots are your safest bets. Although it’s tempting to try to play a carefully placed lob shot or smash, a smooth drop-shot over the net will win more points. High % Return: The safest serve return is the soft floating return deep to the baseline. It’s probably the easiest serve return to make. Forget about style and flair, for now, keep it simple and get it over the net!

Tennis Trivia A: Emma Raducanu. The 18-year-old British woman had to win three qualifying matches just to enter the main draw. In the main draw, she won seven matches! She is the first tennis player – male or female – to win a grand slam as a qualifier.

13 • The Club Times

Q: Who is the only female in the Open era to win the US OPEN as a qualifier?

Keep Them Deep: If both players on the opposing team are in the backcourt, try to keep them there with deep, hard-driving shots and keep the pace of play up. You want to keep them away from the non-volley line where they can take advantage. Steady returns will keep them at bay and hopefully force an error or give you an opportunity to take control of the net.

Wexford Foundation News

The Wexford Foundation needs your help

The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly thrown us all a few ‘curve balls.’ However, due to the incredible pledge by Paul & MC McEvoy to double and triple match member’s donations at the end of last year, and all of those who contributed, the Wexford Foundation was able to help many people in need during a really tough year. Quite incredibly, including $100,00 of Covid emergency funding, between April 2020 and April 2021 we were able to put in excess of $350,000 of donor funds to work in our local area to support those who suffer from a lack of food, housing, healthcare and education. Thank you again to all of those Wexford members who stepped up and through their generosity helped us during an unprecedented time in our lives.

We are blessed that many of you regular donors have already made commitments in 2021, and we are grateful beyond words to Doug

Tozour who has made a major donation of $100,000 in memory of his beloved wife Gail. Unfortunately, we have still been unable to hold some of our main fundraising activities this year and would ask again that if you have donated in the past, please continue, and if you are a newcomer to the neighborhood or have not donated in the past, please consider helping us out. While we all enjoy a wonderful lifestyle in Wexford, please think of all those in this area who are less fortunate than us. If you can donate to the Wexford Foundation, however large or small, please send a check to the Foundation or request Wexford Accounting to include your tax-deductible donation on your Wexford bill. Your Foundation is an all-volunteer organization and we can assure you that your gift will be directed to those who need it most. Thank you for your consideration. Stephen Carter, Chair
