Dear Members,

I would like to express my gratitude and excitement in being selected as the new General Manager at Wexford. Over the past two months, I have had the privilege to meet many of the members who have made me feel welcome and shared their thoughts and expectations for the year — and years – ahead. I’m looking forward to working with our talented management team and support staff with the focus on making 2023 an unforgettable year as Wexford celebrates its 40th anniversary. Congratulations to our three new board members Michael Fajgenbaum, Keith Poisson, and John Presley and to those members serving on Wexford’s committees this year. Thank you for volunteering your talents and providing leadership and vision to ensure Wexford is one of the premier communities in the Lowcountry.

I would be remiss not to mention the membership’s generous support of the Employee Holiday Fund collected in November and December of last year. Your additional support is greatly appreciated by the staff – particularly those in the background who provide the support and service required to keep the community running on a daily basis.

Thank you to all who joined in the many festivities at the Club during December and January. We had many memorable events including the annual Festival of Harbour Lights, Member Holiday Party, New Year’s Eve celebration and, new to the calendar, the Meet the Chefs dinner this past month. I encourage you to attend our lineup of events for February and March. As a reminder, reservations

and registrations can be made online and are appreciated.

My main focus during the first and second quarter will be to lead and support the culinary program with extra attention on rotating menus and a timely promotion of events. In addition, I will be assisting the Amenities and Planning committee on the next Amenities Enhancement Plan and look forward to a successful process. These goals were created based on the feedback I’ve received from membership and the results of the Member Engagement Survey conducted by Club Benchmarking. Although there are definitely challenges ahead, I am confident Wexford can accomplish these objectives by working together as a community.

Over the next few months, I plan to have pop-up events throughout the community to meet the membership and gain deeper insights into Wexford –stay tuned for more details! As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or compliments.

Hello Neighbors,

As we move through the month of January and the Board settles into their new roles and responsibilities, I cannot let this moment pass without saying that whatever words of thanks I said to Vince Sullivan at our annual meeting, they were not enough. Thank you again Vince for your unwavering optimism, good humor, dedication and hard work throughout last year.

Clearly though, Wexford would not be Wexford without our staff and I was recently honored to be invited to attend our employee staff party. It was a fun time with an impromptu “swap your name tag” game, resulting in me spending the evening as Dan Ogden, and yes, he got to be me. Amongst the highlights were presentations to honor our Employees of the Quarters throughout 2022, a raffle, and presentations to commemorate our longer serving employees as they reached various milestones.

It was a great evening and a chance to share a sincere “thank you” on behalf of all Wexford members for our employees’ hard work and dedication to make our lives so enjoyable.

Well, the year has started and there is plenty to do. At the time of this writing, we have announced our new committee structures and are arranging initial meetings. We have two new committees this year with the formation of a Croquet Committee and a subcommittee to address Pool matters. By the final day

of applications,120 people had applied resulting in about 50% more volunteers than available slots. This was a mixed blessing since as a board, while we were delighted by the breadth and depth of choice, we were very aware we could not find slots for everyone and I strongly encourage those members to apply again next year. With regard to specific Board objectives for the year, we are in the process of finalizing and I look forward to sharing more at the upcoming Board Meetings. Key initiatives occurring now are:

• Continuing to listen and understand membership needs and desires for expanded amenities, and our Planning and Amenity Committee is already hard at work.

• With the successful acquisition of Pier 8, Dan Ogden is already working on preparations to make it available for leasing.

• Supporting a busy late spring for Chris Neff on our Hole 4 revision.

Nobody would deny that last year held its challenges for Wexford, but an enormous amount of work was done by both the Board and Management to get us into a position where we — the “New board,” our new GM and his committed management team — have the combined opportunity to ensure that Wexford fulfills the promise of that extraordinary home we all want. With your help, we will do our very best to achieve that.

2023 Committee Structure

The Board reviewed the current structure of the committees this year and have made a number of changes and clarifications.

• We are establishing the Croquet Committee whose focus will be to increase awareness and engagement of the membership in this amenity. Lynn Looby will chair the committee and establish the committee charter with goals and objectives.

• We have added a non-Board Member co-chair to the Amenities and Planning Committee. Gary Crandall and Harry Mellon will co-chair this committee this year as we move forward to develop plans to move our community forward.

• We feel that it is necessary to clarify that the House and Social Committee is an advisory committee to the General Manager. As such Patrick McGuire will chair this committee and will work closely with Michael Fajgenbaum the appointed Board Liaison along with Craig Kandravi and members of the House and Social committee to not only create a robust calendar of well executed events but also to work to better define Wexford’s vision for Food and Beverage in respect to service levels, menu choices, overall quality and price.

• The House and Social Committee will also establish a new sub-committee focusing on the pool complex. Mary Faas has agreed to serve as a non-Board Member chair of the Pool Committee.

History of Wexford: The Original Development

THE DEVELOPER AND THE DREAM

Wexford Plantation was planned by Marathon Oil Company to be the premier residential community on the East Coast. With that concept in mind they chose the Hilton Head Company, a major developer on the island, to carry out their ideas. The developer assembled a parcel of approximately 500 acres across from Shipyard Plantation running from Highway 278 to Broad Creek. They had an acute awareness of the unique natural beauty of the land and a desire to preserve it.

THE DESIGNER

The developer chose Willard Byrd to design the layout for the golf course and plantation. He was inspired by a National Geographic article about the inland canals of Ireland, and conceived the idea of a lock-controlled harbour that would be the centerpiece of the plantation. A championship golf course would surround it, and homes would front on either the golf course or the harbour. There are only two other communities on the east coast with lock-controlled harbors.

CONSTRUCTION

The Great Wall of Wexford

The lock system cost approximately $1,000,000 in 1983 dollars. You may not have noticed it, but the lock sits right in the middle of a powerline easement. There is a major powerline which crosses under the waters of Broad Creek, coming up at a small sub-station behind the 18th Green. It used to then travel overhead to connect to the existing overhead lines which now begin at the sub-station next to the chipping/bunker practice green to the right of the driving range. It cost The Hilton Head Company $1,600,000 in 1983 dollars to have the powerline buried in conduit and placed under the lock. A spare conduit runs the length of the buried cable for future expansion of the powerline. Also involving the power company was the raising of the remaining balance of the overhead powerline by 30 feet around the southern border of Wexford from just right of the 2nd tee to behind the 5th tee, at a cost of $3,000 per power pole. This allowed for the placement of the excess excavated material from the harbor construction over and above that which was used on the golf course. It became known as “The Great Wall of Wexford.”

A concrete barrier of three and a half miles of prestressed concrete was used to form the harbour bulkhead. 600,000 yards of dirt were moved to carve out the golf course fairways which surround the harbour. Seven bridges were built spanning lagoons and the harbour and forming four islands allowing island homesites. Every home would have a view of marsh, lagoon, golf course or harbour. Originally 525 home-sites were planned but some lots have been combined and site plans altered so that only 460 remain today.

THE IRISH CONNECTION

History tells us that Alexander Trench sailed from Wexford, Ireland in 1690 to Port Royal Sound. He was the agent for John Bayley of Balinclough who owned 48,000 acres of land in the Lowcountry including Hilton Head Island, which for a time was called Trench’s island. The name Wexford is derived from the Norse, Weissfjord, which is a fjord of freshwater mud flats. Our sister harbour in Wexford, Ireland, is an open mouthed shallow harbour on the southeastern coast.

Valentine’s Cocktail & Mocktail

FRENCH MARTINI

The French Martini is a fruity spin on a vodka martini made with raspberry liqueur and pineapple juice. It might seem like a retro classic cocktail but it was created in Paris, the city of love, in the 1960s. It’s gone on to become a modern classic.

Ingredients

2oz Vodka

1oz pineapple juice

½ oz Chambord or other raspberry liqueur

Garnish with fresh raspberry

Instructions

1. Add Vodka, pineapple juice and Chambord to a cocktail shaker. Fill it with ice and shake until cold.

2. Strain into martini glass and garnish.

BERRY LOVE POTION

After months of crisp, frigid days the Earth spoils us with a fresh start a new growing season. Strawberry season is the sweet reward for the long slog that is winter. Strawberries grown in the south, have a sweeter taste so one will be rewarded with berries that are distinct during spring’s primetime.

Ingredients

1 cup strawberries, hulled and thickly sliced

½ cup lemonade

½ cup lemon-lime beverage, chilled

Instructions

1. In blender, place strawberries and lemonade. Cover and process on high until smooth about 1 minute.

2. Pour mixture in a tall glass over ice. Add soda and stir gently. Garnish with whole strawberry. Serve immediately.

Tenuta Torciano’s Wine School

For 300 years and 15 generations, the Giachi family has been making fine wines at Tenuta Torciano in San Gimignano — the heart of Tuscany. Led by one of Tenuta Torciano’s Sommelier/Instructors, the event will be a guided tour through the eight most important wine grapes and an opportunity taste, learn and share our love for wine. Attendees will sample six different wines, including Tenuta Torciano’s signature Brunello, as well as various Tuscan blends and others, and Tenuta Torciano’s extra virgin olive oil, truffle oil and balsamic vinegar, paired with light Tuscan-inspired charcuterie. There is no wholesale/retail distribution of these exclusive wines, they can be purchased only at the winery or through special events the winery hosts, including its Wine School. If you taste wines you love, you will also have the opportunity to order directly from Tenuta Torciano at a 30% discount. Please bring cash or check as member charge is not available.

Boston PD Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums

Start your St. Patrick’s Day weekend celebration here at Wexford with a very special presentation by the Boston Police Department Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums. Join us at the pool complex as this world-renown group performs from 11:00am – 1:00pm. Members and their guests will enjoy festive food, delicious drinks and exclusive entertainment. Wexford defeated Long Cove in the Wexford/Long Cove Challenge in January. Wexford now leads the series with 15 wins to Long Cove’s 15.

The Wexford courts were full as over 25 players enjoyed the first “court sports” event of 2023! Patrick Mason, Mike Pollard, and Brian Kiggans kept the round-robin format moving along on the tennis and pickleball courts. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed appetizers and drinks while playing Mike’s Music Trivia game. General Manager Patrick McGuire, Clubhouse Manager Craig Kandravi and F&B Manager Robert Mosco were even seen helping some teams “Name That Tune” and joining in on the music trivia fun. In the end, the team captained by Jim Hall and members Seth & Karen Burston and Kevin & Karen Kemmerer

took home the coveted Music Trivia Trophy for 2023! Nancy Noonan and Susan Rankin were recognized by Patrick Mason for their play on the tennis and pickleball courts, respectively.

Use a dynamic warmup to prevent injuries

A warmup not only prepares you physically and mentally, but its purpose is also to help to reduce the risk of injury and enhance performance. A good dynamic warm up routine is vital, whether it’s prior to a practice session or before an important match.

Plan to arrive to the courts approximately 10 minutes early to ensure an effective dynamic warmup. The warmup should be two phases:

PHASE ONE

An effective warm up will initially raise the heart rate, body temperature, blood flow and increase the range of movement around a joint.

Walking a couple laps around the courts will begin to increase your heartrate and blood flow. After a couple laps, try 30 seconds of jumping jacks. After this you are ready for Phase 2.

PHASE TWO

The second phase will activate the major muscle groups used when chasing a ball down or driving a cross court forehand. It moves the joints through their full range of motion using minimal resistance. Dynamic (moving) stretching will increase the ability of the muscles to contract and extend, reducing the risk of soft tissue injuries. Examples of these stretches are:

• Knee lifts. Tennis requires rigorous full-body movement. While standing in place, raise your arms to hip level and lift your knees to touch them. Perform three sets of knee lifts for 15 to 30 seconds at a time.

• Reverse kicks. Reverse kicks are a jump-training exercise that targets your knees, glutes, quads, calf muscles, and hamstrings. While standing in place, lift your left heel up toward your glutes, return to standing position, then lift your right heel using the same motion. Perform three sets of butt kicks for 15 to 30 seconds at a time.

• Standing trunk rotations. Trunk rotations help improve balance and body stability by targeting the paraspinal muscle that stabilizes your lower back. To perform this upper body stretch, stand straight with your feet shoulderwidth apart, extend your arms out in front of you, and place your hands on top of each other. Gently rotate your torso to each side. Perform two sets of 10 reps.

• Standing Ys and Ts. These movements are for loosening up your shoulders. Ys , Standing up straight with your arms at your sides with your palms facing outward, raise your arms straight over your head and clap. Do these 10 times. Ts. Standing straight up raise your arms shoulder height hands together in front of you. Separate your arms bringing them as far back as you can, then bring them back together and clap. Do these 10 times!

Free Boat Inspections

As a boat owner, are you completely aware of all the safety gear and systems you are required to carry on your boat per Coast Guard regulations? Do you know that if you are stopped by the Coast Guard, DNR or Beaufort County Sheriffs Office the first thing they will check is that you are in compliance with all the regulations, and you can get a ticket and fines if you’re not in compliance?

Well, help is right here in Wexford. We have members who are also members of the America’s Boating Club and are certified boat inspectors. As a free service, they will come aboard your boat and run through a checklist of more than a dozen items and systems you should have, and can advise you as to whether your boat is compliant. This free service can save you a lot of time, expense and frustration with the new boating season coming up. The inspections will take place Saturday, March 18th, but time slots are limited so sign up with Mark in the Harbour Center as soon as you can!

Blessing of the Fleet

Sunday, March 5th

The first of the big three annual Yacht Club events, the Blessing is a nautical ceremony to spread good wishes for all boats and boaters for a safe upcoming boating season. The ceremony starts with a Color Guard to present the Colors (American Flag) for play of the National Anthem, then there are opening remarks by the Commodore, Steve Duvall, along with a guest speaker or two, before the Chaplin blesses the fleet. We then, of course, retreat to the clubhouse for cocktails and dinner!

Even if you don’t own a boat, this is a time-honored ceremony worth witnessing, and a great opportunity to mix with your fellow Yacht Club members for an enjoyable evening to kick off the boating season! Check the website for event details.

Importance of Eyeline

Kicking off 2023, we want to start our golf game on the right foot. Setup positions for putting are extremely important, and at the top of that list is your eyeline when you stand over a putt. This can directly affect your putting stroke and starting direction when it comes off the putter face.

See the picture (above) and notice the eyes will fall directly over the golf ball. Have a friend check this on the putting green before your round and you will strike putts more solid and start them on the right line.

Frost Damage: What to Expect

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope everyone had a happy holiday and are ready to bring on the new year! During the Christmas weekend, Wexford was hit with an extreme cold snap. As you’ve seen throughout the community, this has affected a lot of our plants and flowers. I would like inform the membership on the effects of the cold and what actions should be taken in the weeks after. Most of the woody plant material like azaleas, jack frost, ligustrum and viburnums probably experienced some sort of “leaf burn.” This means the leaves on the plant froze and will shortly drop off the plant. This is fine and expected. The woody stalks of the plant are fine and should produce leaves again in the spring. Once spring comes, if you notice any portion of the plant not producing leaves then that section should be cut out. When it comes to your softer tissue plant material, ginger, flax lilies and some flower verities, the damage is a little more severe. Ginger and flax lilies leaves and stocks will turn brown and will die off. It is important to cut all the dead plant material out of the plant. In most cases this requires cutting the plant back to the ground. When spring or warmer temperatures come around, you should start to see these plants emerge from the soil again.

We did have some varieties of our winter annuals die completely. Snapdragons and stock were almost a total loss. While pansies and panolas weren’t affected at all. In this case, pull the dead flowers and replace with new ones. During this time, we ask everyone to please be patient. Some areas around the community may look a little bare for a few months while we wait for spring to come!

Good habits strengthen communities

Security often gets complaints or inquiries from Property Owners about some activities that neighbors, and guests often do that can be a violation of Wexford Covenants and sometimes even law. It is important we work together as a community to follow the guidelines to ensure all members can enjoy their home and Wexford’s amenities safely and with a high level of satisfaction.

LOCK YOUR DOORS

During the past several months, several of the Hilton Head Island gated communities have experienced home and vehicle break-ins, wherein the property was left unlocked. Wexford is a semi-controlled environment with guests and commercial workers moving about during all hours of the day and night. Security provides a highly visible presence at both the gate and inside Wexford. Along with the Sheriff’s Office, we ask that you always lock your homes and vehicles, as criminals will assess areas for easy access, and if they cannot gain this access, they will quickly move on. By locking your homes and vehicles, they will leave Wexford and move on to other areas.

PRIVATE PROPERTY

Wexford is private property and people cannot simply enter without facing potential consequences. Once in Wexford, the individual property is also private. While neighbors generally get along, it should be remembered that no one is allowed to routinely access the property of another without permission of the owner. There have been recent reports of members having their doorbells rung or doors knocked on during the late evening hours and finding no one at the door. This is an inappropriate action that shows a lack of respect for neighbors and can be extremely dangerous for all involved.

Another example of private property is the sea wall and docks behind homes that are on the harbour. These are owned by and are the responsibility of the Property Owner. Before using a dock or sea wall behind a home for any reason, please check with the owner first to avoid any misunderstanding or other difficulties.

GOLF CARTS

Golf cart operation is subject to both Wexford Covenants and SC State Law. Please remember, operators of golf carts must be 16 years of age.

One of the more serious offenses is drivers failing to stop at stop signs. Stop signs are placed at locations where the cart path intersects with a roadway. The impact between a golf cart and a larger vehicle often results in injury to the occupants of the golf cart. Cart operators are encouraged to be diligent when driving a golf cart. Please be mindful of all traffic signs and obey them.

PETS

Many homes in Wexford have one or more pets. Pets are thought of as family members and are especially important. Pets are required to be on a leash when off the owner’s property. The owner is also responsible for removing any pet deposits that are made. Reports are received of pets being allowed to exercise without being on a leash and sometimes without anyone with them. Some owners are very diligent about removing pet droppings; however, this is not always the case. Vacant lots, streets, or homes where the owner is away are not to be considered as locations where a pet can do their business and it does not have to be removed. Please remember to remove all pet deposits.

So, by working together, following the Covenants and recommendations above, we can provide a safer community for all enjoy.

The Wexford Care Group, initiated in 2020 to develop a sense of community by reaching out to neighbors in their time of need or crisis, has served Wexford for more than 20 years. As we adapted to post-pandemic life, the group was eager to assess the evolving needs of our community to best serve our neighbors.

Wexford Care Group volunteers have met over the past year to discuss and discern new methods by which the group can execute its charter. Based on feedback received, it was decided to launch four subcommittees to address specific needs. Each subcommittee has a coordinator.

Croquet

One of the hidden gems at Wexford is the tournament croquet lawn located across from the children’s playground. Did you know that Wexford’s croquet lawn is one of the finest in the Southeast? Whether you’re a seasoned croquet player or looking to pick up a new sport, the croquet lawn is available for all members to enjoy.

Currently, the Croquet Club plays on Mondays and Thursdays and with minimal start-up instructions, even beginners can quickly learn to play. The Croquet Committee is working on making this amenity welcoming for all members to enjoy and is working on bringing some fun, new events to 2023 – with more details to come!
