Dear Parents, This week, Andreas Schleicher, the head of the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa), spoke to MPs about the fourth industrial revolution and the impact that this may have on education in the future. Whilst I am not convinced that “the science and the maths might become a lot softer in the future when [the need for such knowledge] evaporates”, I agree that, as we move into a world where technology is able to do more and more for us, education will need to focus on “those skills where humans have an advantage, which is perspective-taking, which is looking at problems from multiple angles, making judgement.” His comments are well timed as this week’s Barometer focuses on the work of Mr Atkinson in Philosophy, a subject that gives the boys the chance to examine problems from

a variety of perspectives, to construct arguments and make judgements. I particularly enjoyed reading the boys’ work inspired by the technology in the film Minority Report that fits well with Mr Schleicher’s comments; there will need to be someone who is able to ask the questions about the impacts of technology on our lives as the pace of development quickens.

Another example of the boys demonstrating their ability to think and question was highlighted by the Radio 4 programme #ourboysaswell which was broadcast on Wednesday morning, will be repeated on Monday 4th March at 9pm and is available here: https://www.bbc. co.uk/programmes/ m0002r3v. The boys provided the producer with enough material for four documentaries although unfortunately it could not all be included.

The programme only gives a snapshot of what they

they learnt from the day when the Good Lad Initiative visited but they engaged thoughtfully with the material and were open in discussion with the journalist.

Please do also take the time to look at the information about the proposed road closure on Paddington Street that will have an impact on traffic around the school. I suggest planning ahead and looking at public transport options as it could be quite a disruptive period.

PHILOSOPHY Mr Atkinson writes...

Avid readers of the Barometer may remember that last year I tried to challenge the issue of ‘the unexamined life’ and the contribution to Philosophy made by Socrates. This year I turn my attention to one of the most common questions concerning any Philosopher.

No, not ‘Why are we here?’ or even ‘How do I live a good life?’ but the question asked by many embarking upon, endeavouring with or even enduring through Philosophy.

The question is ‘What IS Philosophy?’

Well for each Year group the answer to that question begins in the same way.

Philosophy is the ‘love of wisdom’. A chance to explore the biggest of questions and try to discover their own personal truths for later life.

Each Year group then takes a different set of themes and explores them in greater detail. It might be ‘Who are you?’ for Year 7 or ‘What is reality?’ for Year 8 and so on. However, this does not answer the full question of ‘what’ Philosophy actually is.

In part, I believe that answering that question involves (as any Philosopher loves to do) asking a different question, which is, ‘How do we do Philosophy?’ One ‘does’ Philosophy by being rigorous. So we demand

more of what is in front of us; we demand evidence, we demand justification. But in order to really ‘do’ Philosophy properly, we must demand that of ourselves as well. We must be even more rigorous with our own beliefs that those of others. So Philosophy then is an exploration of questions but the deeper we go the more we realise that those questions are not posed to others but posed for ourselves.

I hope the following issue provides a deeper insight into the kinds of questions being posed for each Year group and might start a reader off on their own questioning journey!

YEAR 7 - THE SHIP OF THESEUS Mr Atkinson writes...

Imagine for a moment that you owned a sailing boat. It is a simple boat. One that comes in three parts. The hull, mast and sail. You go on a series of voyages and each time a different part breaks and you have it replaced. On the fourth voyage you realise that none of the original parts are still present.

Now this fourth voyage is a

long, choppy trip and as the waves start to calm a thought strikes you. If none of the original parts remain then is this really still the same boat?

You ask your sailing partner what they think. It doesn’t matter they say. Same boat or different boat at the end of the day it is just a ship!

surely it needs to retain that even if all its parts change?

But then where is it? It was not the hull, mast or sail. More importantly, you start to think, don’t we change? Don’t our bodies change throughout our lives? Where then is our own identity, one that stays constant?

That doesn’t seem good enough though. If the boat is to have identity, and you certainly feel it does then

Perhaps joining that boating club was not such a great idea after all!

PHILOSOPHY AND FILM Quite often during Philosophy lessons a hand will go up and a student will declare ‘Oh! This is like that film I saw the other week’. Then begins the usual discussion where we work out what the film is (or increasingly a Netflix series).

What is telling though is that the film or series is often popular and most people have seen it. Year 7 noted that they had heard of ‘trolley problems’ from The Good Place. Many in Year 10 linked the lessons where we looked at the sad case of the mountaineer David Sharp with Everest and Year 11 have even linked the Philosophy of Religion

with the recent Attenborough documentary Dynasties.

All of these links with popular culture have cemented in my mind the importance of film analysis as an enjoyable way of discussing and digesting philosophical themes. So far this year: Year 8 have been linking their studies on Plato’s cave with The Truman Show. Year 9 have been exploring issues of dystopia within the film Wall-E and Year 10 debated Free Will & Responsibility through the, again dystopic, film Minority Report.

Don’t worry Year 7 & 11! Year 7 will get a chance to look at language and meaning through clips and poetry from Alice in Wonderland later in the year and Year 11 will try to bring various themes together when we round their studies off with Inception – one that gets me scratching my head every time I see it!

Driverless Cars in Minority Case: Report ETHICS- who to crash into?

The scenario: you are driving in an automated car and the brake fails,you are going to crash into something: a tree (therefore you probably die) a mother and her baby, a cyclist , or a dog .

Who dies?

Who’s fault is it- the passenger’s or the car’s?

Who chooses?

● Japan have developed a driverless taxi which will be in operation for the 2020 olympics ●

A Tesla driver crashed into a fire truck whilst drunk.

He claimed that he should not be held

responsible for the crash since the car was in autopilot.

Although he was eventually charged for his offence, this case raised many questions about where the responsibility lies when a driverless car is involved in an accident.

Tesla has already developed cars which can do complex manoeuvres both on the motorway and in small spaces i.e. parkings.

Minority Report: ●

Cars are shown as having automated driving technology which replaced drivers in the movie.

Their propulsion system and shape of car was different but the driving ability is not far from what we have today .

●

Drivers are restricted to drive on a certain route,like a monorail, and have no control over the car .

Retina scans in our lives today: • Today, retina scans are used in smartphones

They are foundational biotech security features They can be used to unlock devices and make payments on smartphones and laptops Retina scans today are still very much in the experimental phases and their capabilities are quite limited Retina scanners are also used in airports (e-Passport) Government agencies such as the FBI, CIA and NASA use retina scans for identification purposes

Retina scans in Minority Report: • They are used to identify people in public and track perpetrators • Retina scanners are stationed in public places where there are lots of crowds • They scan people and log their details and metrics • Retina scans are a cornerstone of the security measures in the city • Without these scans the police would not be able to track people as fast and people would not be able to go about their everyday business

Dystopia in Wall-E By Joshua The film Wall-E takes place in the year 2805. Later in the film a robot EVE goes into earth to find vegetation. When the evil robot won’t let them go back to earth Wall-E and EVE take matters in their own hand.

When Wall-E enters the Axiom he sees that citizens are living in a world of technology. Most of the humans on the ship don’t even know what is going on apart from they are in the ship. Most of them don’t even know that there is a pool on the ship because they are distracted by all of the technology.

The story also takes place after an apocalyptic event on Earth though WallE is the only survivor. When the humans become lazy the robots start to do their job and eventually Auto takes control of the entire ship. Another theme of dystopia in the film could be the dangers of technology and how it can control us for example the pilot never knew Auto was evil. Some of the robots were not evil, like EVE and Wall-E, they try to find vegetation so they can travel back to earth.

Minority Report Poster Real Life In everyday life all public places have cameras to protect the population against crime.

Privacy

Some people have cameras in their houses to watch out for burglaries.

There has been a debate whether there should be cameras everywhere to minimise crime even more. But does this remove our privacy?

People think yes because they don’t want to be worried about every move and other people always seeing this.

Minority Report In the film Minority Report, this privacy is taken away as the precogs see every move of every person.

This makes the movie seem dystopic as every move is being watched and one wrong move will be caught out. This is very similar to the pre-World War 2 Nazi government where every move was watched and reported to the Gestapo.

Wall-e -the futuristic themes Wall-e is set in the year 2805 where the earth is covered in rubbish and while the whole human race is flying around in space, robots are set to clean the earth. Even though Wall-e is set 800 years in the future some of its futuristic elements are being tested soon for commercial use.

The floating chair

The main form of transport for the humans aboard the axion, even though we have not made something so advanced as the floating chair that you can control with a pop up window. Toyota created the “I-real” which is a driveable chair not dissimilar to the ones in Wall-e.

The space ships

The spaceships are probably the most futuristic element in Wall-e. Even though we haven't invented anything close to the Axiom, Elon Musk has made a rocket quite similar to the rocket that EVE comes in.

ARISTOTLE Mr Atkinson writes...

I have, on occasion, been asked who my favourite Philosopher is. My response often depends on the individual(s) asking. If it is a class then I will usually challenge them to work it out.

If it is a colleague then I might say that I only think about Philosophy in the classroom and if it is a friend then I may try to turn the question back round on them without them noticing. The truth is… I don’t have one!

Of course there are great Philosophers; Kierkegaard, Sartre and Plato have all contributed ideas that I find compelling. Kant and Mill offer suggestions on Ethics that are excellent discussion points and Marx, Luxemburg and Wollstonecraft certainly challenge us with their comments about politics and society. However, the Philosopher that stands out when it comes to the Wetherby Senior School Philosophy course is Aristotle. He appears in most topics with some example or point of view and he can genuinely claim to be the ‘father’ of western Philosophy (alongside Socrates and Plato). However, it is the modern relevance of his Philosophy that I find so important.

Year 11 should know why.

They spent a number of weeks last year analysing his work on rhetoric and the importance of the way we present ideas and arguments. They applied

this to modern day advertising with some excellent (and highly amusing!) results.

Year 10 have just begun learning about Virtue Theory and how Aristotle suggested that we should try to flourish as individuals in order to be ‘good’. This may not be true but the suggestion that we reflect upon who we are becoming as a person rather than just the outcome of our actions is a refreshing and positively existential claim.

Year 9 are looking at conspiracy theories and how being a rigorous thinker involves approaching ideas in a rational and methodical way. That we take each argument in turn and work out if it has strengths and weaknesses and that we only move towards a belief once we have the evidence for it rather than starting with a belief and working backwards.

This method owes a lot to the painstaking way that Aristotle observed and commented upon the world that he inhabited.

Year 8 are about to return to Aristotle and see how he contributed towards trying to answer the question of why we are here and how the universe came to be in existence and Year 7, who started the year off with The Ship of Theseus story, have learnt about Aristotle without even realising it!

But there is a further reason why I think Aristotle is important and this is because many of his views are very

questionable and I personally think he was wrong about a huge number of things. Rights, scientific understanding, politics to name but a few.

So if he was so wrong about a number of things then why do I think he is important?

Well for that I must return to my original intro: What IS Philosophy? Philosophy is realising that the discussion, dissection and debate of the important questions of life is not something done by some ‘great Philosopher’ who we then follow and worship for being such an important thinker but rather something that we can, and I would argue must, do whenever we can.

Aristotle starts discussions but he doesn’t have the last say.

That is for us and all it starts with is a simple question; ‘Am I really right to believe the things that I believe’?

MY FIRST CONCERT Ishaan B, Year 9 writes...

For the past three years I have been dedicating my Saturdays to the Centre of Young Musicians. I play the drums and other percussion instruments from 10am to 3:30pm. Last November, Tony Malone (Head of Percussion at CYM), told me about the London Youth Wind Band, and asked me if I would like to audition.

I said “yes” and didn’t think much of it, but to my surprise I was chosen to join!

Leading up to the half term break, I realised (shock, horror) that instead of relaxing, I would spend my whole holidays rehearsing from 10:00am to 5:00 pm.

What had I done?

Once I got over my initial dread and as rehearsals went on, I started to become more and more interested, and actually started enjoying myself (even more shock, horror).

In total there were five percussionists, including two teachers and around 50 wind instrumentalists.

We were conducted by Geoffrey Harniess (Head of CYM). We practiced lots of different pieces such as “Zodiac Dances”, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “The CanCan”.

The actual concert day came, and we travelled to Greenwich, to perform in

a St Alfege Church. We all had to wear tuxedos (channelling our inner penguins). The concert took about two hours. I played loads of different instruments like the bass drum, the snare drum, the chimes and the glockenspiel.

My hands started to get tired by the first interval and red and sore by the end. Painful, but worth it.

The concert went really well, and after we finished, we were informed that we had to pack the instruments

away. That meant hauling six timpani drums, a gong, a drum kit, three snare drums, a bass drum, a triangle, a pair of cymbals, a vibraphone, a glockenspiel and a marimba down the stairs. No wonder we percussion players don’t need to go to the gym.

I found that this was a really fun experience, and I had a wonderful time. Later this year, I will be travelling to Belgium to perform again with the London Youth Wind Band, in the middle of the summer holidays.

BANKSY AT THE PALAZZO MEDICI RICCARDI Tommaso S, Year 10 writes...

Banksy is the famous Englandbased street artist, vandal, political activist, you name it! All over England, mostly in London, he executes fabulous graffiti in a distinctive stencilling style. His works are filled with dark humour on political and social events around the world such as climate change and war. But here’s the catch…no one knows who he is! The question, “Who is Banksy?”, has been circulating through many art circles (and Scotland Yard apparently) for many years.

And now he’s at it again!

From 19th October 2018 to 24th March 2019, Banksy arrives at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence (the historical Medici residence and prototype of all the Renaissance palaces in the city) to exhibit 20 of his most famous and iconic masterpieces to the Italian people and masses of tourists.

During my half-term in Florence, I was intrigued by this exhibition at the Palazzo and went to see it. I was very surprised by the waves of tourists who also wanted to admire his work and also because of the variety of ages.

Both young and old people were present. I LOVED IT. I also learned of Banksy’s hobbies such as publishing his very own book volumes “Black Books”, mocking the

British currency and even spreading chaos at a high-class art auction (I would advise looking into the last one, it’s my favourite!).

PROTOTYPING IN TOKYO Tommaso S, Year 10 writes...

WHAT? The Japan House is showcasing “Prototyping in Tokyo” where the latest design-led innovations of the world famous design engineer and professor Yamanaka Shunji from the University of Tokyo are displayed. One example of the innovations is “Ready to Crawl”, a group of robots which are “born” already like a fully grown organism and interact with the passing visitors.

The exhibit explores 3 core themes: PROSTHETICS, BIO-LIKENESS ROBOTS and ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING. PROSTHETICS -> Focuses mainly on the range of interpretations of the ‘expanded human body’.

BIO-LIKENESS ROBOTS -> Robots with life-like movement and behaviour, reinforcing the idea that the innovations are packed with intelligence.

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING -> Bio printers taking prototyping to the next level, allowing engineers and designers to generate more complex innovations.

WHERE? Located on Kensington High Street, Japan House is the central hub of Japanese

art, design, technology, gastronomy etc right here in London. This project is part of a global initiative led by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs which has established other Japan Houses in Los Angeles and São Paulo. Their aim is to “deepen appreciation of all that Japan has to offer”.

WHO? Professor Yamanaka Shunji is the founder of Leading Edge Design and teaches at the University of Tokyo. He is one of the most respected design engineers in Japan with previous projects ranging from wristwatches to railway carriages. Over the years, he has received many awards such as the 2004 MAINICHI DESIGN AWARD, the iF DESIGN AWARD and multiple GOOD DESIGN AWARDS.

This is what intrigued me the most: the “Lizard”. Truth be told, when I picked up the lizard I felt really on edge as it felt like an actual reptile was squirming in my hands.

Although, I was absolutely amazed how they managed to combine technology and prosthetics to create a life-like version of an animal which actually reacted to the visitor’s presence. Imagine what they could achieve in a decade, possibly even less!

‘COME FROM AWAY’ THEATRE TRIP With a large group of Wetherby boys and staff in tow, on February 6th I travelled to London’s West End for an optional theatre trip to see Come From Away. The show has just transferred after selling out on Broadway so we felt very lucky to get tickets.

The play was set on 11th September 2001, a date also known as 9/11, and followed the stories all the diverted planes and passengers after the crashes in New York.

Come From Away is about a small town named Gander in Newfoundland, home to only 9,000 people. This small town had 7,000 emergency passengers stranded there after all flights in motion were aborted. The play balanced the shock and fear of emotions involved in 9/11 alongside the

support and happiness of the people who looked after each other lovingly in the wake of the terror. Most notably, the play is about the strength of human kindness and ability to band together in times of crisis. Despite the time period in which the play is set, it was a truly uplifting and exciting play which we all LOVED; it was so wonderful to hear the excitable reviews of the boys as they bounced out of the theatre. Reviews of the staff also included ‘this is the best musical I have ever seen’ as we applauded during the standing ovation. This is an outstanding play that I cannot recommend enough, I suggest you buy your tickets before it sells out in London too!

PADDINGTON STREET DIVERSION There is a planned closure on Paddington Street as part of improvements through the Marylebone Low Emission Neighbourhood scheme, a partnership between Westminster City Council, the Mayor of London (through the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund) and local stakeholders.

In order to implement planting and pedestrian crossing improvements, a small section of the road (near to Luxborough Street) will need

to be closed to traffic between 18th March and 12th April 2019. This means that there will be no through route for traffic during this time, and diversions will be in place.

Attached is a map which shows these routes – as these are highway traffic management plans you may need to zoom in for detail. Please note the actual closure location in the centre of the map.
