THE MEMORIES WE CREATE.

IT’S IN OUR NATURE TO WELCOME YOU

The Story Behind the Wetaskiwin Name:

Wetaskiwin has a rich and storied history. For centuries before settlers arrived, Wetaskiwin’s land was inhabited by the Plains Cree people. The city’s name, “Wetaskiwin,” comes from Cree law, meaning “coming or being on the land together in peace and harmony.” A historic story from around 1867 tells of two revered Chiefs, Buffalo Child of the Blackfoot and Little Bear of the Cree, who were on the brink of a battle.

Both Chiefs independently scouted the same hill for an advantage point and unexpectedly came face to face. After a tense standoff, they dropped their weapons and engaged in hand-to-hand combat. After a fierce battle, they mutually decided to rest. While smoking their pipes, Little Bear, the Cree Chief, accidentally took a puff from Buffalo Child’s pipe, which symbolized the sharing of the peace pipe.

Realizing the significance of this unintentional act, they understood that it was an irrevocable pledge of friendship and peace. They pledged to be friends and, as tribal leaders, ensured their people would also be friends, putting an end to thoughts of war.

This act of unity and peace marked a pivotal moment in Wetaskiwin’s history, emphasizing the power of understanding and co-operation between different cultures.

Today, Wetaskiwin thrives with a population exceeding 13,400 residents, offering a wealth of services and opportunities throughout the community. Join us as we guide you through the diverse tapestry of our city, where tradition meets modernity, and where every step tells a story waiting to be discovered. Let the adventure begin in Wetaskiwin!

DISCOVER ALBERTA ARTISTS

Wetaskiwin is embracing its artistic roots with stunning new murals that celebrate culture, healing, and community.

Located inside the Wetaskiwin Mall (3725 56 Street), the mural painted by Lance Cardinal tells four powerful stories of healing: smudging for spiritual ceremony, gathering land-based medicines, the Jingle dancer’s healing through movement, and elders’ wisdom for healing through knowledge.

Outside the Wetaskiwin District Heritage Museum, a new trio of murals by local artists explores themes of heritage and nature. One mural features two women’s faces, honoring the museum’s Women of Aspenland exhibit. Another highlights a raven, representing neighborhood wildlife, while the third showcases a frog, connecting to the region’s natural habitat. (5007 50 Avenue)

Murals have always been part of Wetaskiwin’s story, adorning buildings throughout the city. Explore these vibrant works to experience the intersection of history, art, and culture.

RE-TRACE OUR STEPS

Begin your journey at City Hall, admiring the architectural beauty that was originally built in 1908 as a courthouse and now serves as the hub for municipal offices. Step into a bygone era as you explore the Historic Downtown of Wetaskiwin. Rich in history, this district, adorned with over 13 commemorative plaques on storefronts, beckons you to meander through streets graced by heritage buildings, quaint shops, and essential services.

THE WATER TOWER

Although not the sole water tower gracing the expansive Canadian prairies, Wetaskiwin’s distinguished 10-storey landmark serves as a guiding beacon for all entering the city. Erected in 1909 and meticulously refurbished in 2005 through the dedicated efforts of impassioned local residents, the water tower stands as one of the city’s enduring symbols, radiating both iconic charm and a warm welcome.

THE PEACE CAIRN

In 1927, during Canada’s Diamond Jubilee, Wetaskiwin residents joyously marked the occasion by erecting a cairn commemorating 60 years of peace between the Nehiyawak (Cree) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) Nations. Originally situated in the Peace Hills with a commanding view of Wetaskiwin, this historic monument now graces the green space adjacent to Wetaskiwin’s iconic water tower. Designated as a municipal historic site, it stands as a testament to the enduring commitment to peace and holds a cherished place in the city’s heritage.

ALBERTA CENTRAL RAILWAY MUSEUM

Forging a coast-to-coast connection across the vast expanse of Canada posed a formidable challenge for the pioneers. Well before the extensive highway networks linked cities and towns, the local economies thrived on the railways. In our region, the Central Railway played a vital role, serving residents from 1913 to 1981. The Alberta Central Railway Museum stands as a tribute, recreating the 1907 Wetaskiwin CPR depot and offering an authentic glimpse into how passengers and freight traversed the Alberta prairies. Operating seasonally each summer.
