Online Discussion Board Etiquette: Dos And Don’ts Online discussion boards are a very important element of online learning programs. They help students learn new ideas and gain different perspectives about a topic. Discussions also allow instructors to assess if a student has grasped the course content. It helps students help each other to learnand get a better understanding of the topic. But in order to create this helpful environment, students must know how to create a healthy discussion. Some of the dos and don’ts when in an online discussion include: 

Read others’ posts before you post your comment:

Imagine reading through a discussion board where everyone says the same thing. Not only is this boring, it takes the discussion nowhere. Take the time to read through the comments. But if you do not have the time to do so, hire us. Call us to ask, ‘can you do my homework?’ 

Add value to the discussion:

Imagine reading a discussion where everyone except a few answer in monosyllables. Even if you agree to something that a previous user has commented, add a few sentences of your own. For example, ‘I agree, because’. Or, ‘I agree, but’. Share a personal experience, or an anecdote to explain your point. You don’t have to agree all the time. Instructors prefer a student whose comments can add value to the topic. 

Be respectful:

Online programs attract students from across the globe. Making stereotypical jokes about any culture is not accepted. Typing in caps is another example of being disrespectful. If you are new to the online platform, we suggest you hire us until you are comfortable participating in the online discussion. Call us to ask: ‘can you take my online class?’ 

Check your grammar:

Make sure your sentences are grammatically correct with punctuations like commas, periods, etc.

You may be the funniest person in your group, but not everyone appreciates your jokes on a topic as serious as the Great Recession. Here are three golden rules to remember when posting on discussion boards: 

Explain your point clearly:

Read the professor’s policies concerning the discussion board

Nothing irks an instructor more than comments that are way above or below the required word limit. Comments made after the deadline has passed will not be accepted either. Take time to read the instructions carefully before commenting.
