his month, WETA and public television stations around the nation are presenting a newly restored version of the landmark Ken Burns film The Civil War, marking the 25th anniversary of the premiere of the monumental series. The co-production of WETA and Florentine Films was an immense success when it aired in September 1990, garnering critical acclaim and attracting a vast audience of nearly 40 million viewers. We are enormously proud of this extraordinary film and our decades-long, ongoing collaboration with Ken and his colleagues at Florentine Films. Together, we have brought an astonishing array of superb films to the American public, including the major productions Baseball; Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery; Jazz; The War; The National Parks: America’s Best Idea; Prohibition; The Roosevelts: An Intimate History and, most recently, Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies. We have many more great projects in the works as well, including Jackie Robinson, which airs next spring.

In other September programming, we honor the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Greater Washington this month with a presentation of the special program A Celebration of Peace Through Music, which features a local 2014 concert, conducted by Sir Gilbert Levine, in tribute to Pope Francis and former pontiffs John XXIII and John Paul II. s part of the WETA Honored to Serve initiative, throughout September, WETA TV 26 presents local productions that illuminate local people, places and history. Each of the six half-hour films — Local Heroes 1, Local Heroes 2, The Art of the Soldier, Never Forgotten, Ultimate Sacrifice and Remembering Vietnam — features multiple segments with a unifying theme. Program segments explore such topics as military memorials around Washington; the national capital region’s Honor Flights bringing veterans to visit Washington; Arlington National Cemetery; Wreaths Across America; stories from the Museum Resource Center; Vietnam War protests and much more.

Honored to Serve, a WETA TV 26 broadcast and community engagement initiative, spotlights those who serve in America’s military and their families at home, and seeks to foster a deeper appreciation of the U.S. military and its history. With the end of the draft four decades ago, today less than ½ percent of Americans serve in the armed forces. Those who do serve are often the sons or daughters of service members; military service is often now a family tradition that touches a small community of families closely, while others not at all. Honored to Serve aims to help Americans recognize service personnel and their families as an integral part of a wider national family with shared values and goals, rather than viewing them as “a force apart.”

Walt Disney: American Experience

n 1966, the year Walt Disney died, 240 million people saw a Disney movie, 100 million tuned in to a Disney television program, 80 million bought Disney merchandise, and close to seven million visited Disneyland. Few creative figures before or since have held such a long-lasting place in American life and popular culture. A new two-part, four-hour film examines Disney’s complex life and legacy, featuring rare archival footage from the Disney vaults; scenes from some of his greatest films; and interviews with biographers and historians, animators and artists who worked on early films, including Snow White, and the designers who helped turn his dream of Disneyland into reality. The programs explore how Disney was uniquely adept at art as well as commerce, a master filmmaker who harnessed the power of technology and storytelling.

arking the 25th anniversary of the original broadcast of the landmark 1990 Ken Burns film The Civil War, WETA presents the riveting 12-hour series over five consecutive nights in September for the first time in a newly restored, high-definition version. The film, a co-production of Florentine Films and WETA, has been scanned to meet an ultra-high-definition standard, and it can now be seen in new visual clarity, brightness and detail with the exact same fidelity and framing as the negative that Burns and his co-cinematographers Allen Moore and Buddy Squires shot more than 25 years ago. “I’m beyond excited,” said Ken Burns. “For the first time, viewers will see what I saw when I looked through the lens of my camera. It is truly remarkable.”

Bringing alive the most consequential conflict in American history through rich imagery, evocative human stories and a chorus of first-person voices, the collaboration of WETA and Florentine Films was more than 5 years in the making, a monumental undertaking for which nearly 23 million miles of film were shot. Burns and his team filmed more than 16,000 individual photographs, paintings, lithographs and newspapers in locations around the nation.

With its premiere in September 1990, The Civil War attracted an audience of nearly 40 million viewers, becoming the highest-rated PBS documentary ever, a record that still stands today. “I think it’s the centrality of the Civil War in our lives and in the meaning of who we are as Americans — we were able to touch a chord,” says Burns. “And the response is based on that.”

Honored with more than 40 major film and television awards — including two Emmy Awards, two Grammy Awards, Producer of the Year Award from the Producers Guild, People’s Choice Award, Peabody Award, duPont-Columbia Award, D.W. Griffith Award and the Lincoln Prize, among dozens of others — The Civil War received resounding critical acclaim. The columnist George Will wrote, “If better use has ever been made of television, I have not seen it and do not expect to see better until Ken Burns turns his prodigious talents to his next project.”

Those next projects are now well known to all. Twenty-five years and more than 20 films later, and with many more on the way, Burns, his colleagues at Florentine Films, and WETA have set the standard for historical documentaries, bringing to

the nation a host of superb films that are among the most-watched productions in public television history.

The Civil War remains perhaps the most celebrated, however, and the power of the iconic film endures, decades after its release. “I’m not surprised that we’re still talking about the Civil War as a historical event. It is the most important event in American history,” said Burns, who added, “I am flabbergasted that our film has the kind of legs that it does, that, anytime it’s a school day in America, it’s being shown hundreds and hundreds of times — not the whole thing, but pieces. That, a quarter century after its broadcast, it might have the ability to move and educate people...”

The film’s WETA-created website — pbs.org/civilwar — also remains enormously popular, with more than 11.5 million site visits since 2008, and the film’s educational resources are frequently downloaded. For this new release of the restored film, WETA has redesigned the site, which highlights significant events and battles throughout the war with a visual timeline, a map page and a photo gallery. The site also features a Q&A video interview with Burns about the making of the film, a biographies section with photographs and information about key historical figures, and a documents page with primary source materials. In addition, educators can find comprehensive lesson plans, discussion and activity guides, student handouts, answer sheets and more.

n honor of the visit by Pope Francis to the Washington area this month, WETA reprises the program A Celebration of Peace Through Music, which premiered in April during Holy Week. The two-hour special, a co-production of Per Pax Musicam Foundation and Georgetown University, in association with WETA, presents a concert taped in May 2014 at DAR Constitution Hall. Worldrenowned conductor Sir Gilbert Levine conceived and led the performance, which features moving musical tributes to Pope John XXIII, Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis, honoring those spiritual leaders’ commitment to peace and interfaith understanding. Selections include works by Copland, Bernstein, Brahms, Górecki and Verdi. In addition to presenting the concert performance, the program follows Levine as he visits Venice, Krakow, The Vatican, Buenos Aires and Vienna to spotlight places that were inspirations to the men and the music featured in the production. WETA partnered with Georgetown University; the Archdiocese of Washington; and the embassies of Poland, Italy, Argentina and the Holy See to bring the program to air.

his month, Masterpiece premieres the nine-part drama Indian Summers, spotlighting the Raj, romance, and revolution in a story of India on the cusp of change. Alongside a cast of British, Indian and Pakistani stars that includes Roshan Seth (Gandhi, which WETA airs this month), Lillete Dubey (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and Alyy Khan (Sharpe’s Challenge), Julie Walters (Billy Elliot) stars as Cynthia Coffin, the hostess of early 1930s society in the British colonial retreat of Simla in the Himalayan foothills. Set during the summer season, when India’s British rulers left the hot plains for the cooler hill stations, Indian Summers follows the interactions of several brother-sister pairs. Animating the action is Coffin, who presides over the Royal Simla Club, where the ruling class lounges in subtropical splendor, running the country and dancing the nights away.

Also in September, in Masterpiece Mystery! episodes that air at the special time of 8 p.m., Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) stars as world-famous author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in Arthur & George. The three-part adaptation of Julian Barnes’ acclaimed novel follows the separate but intersecting lives of a half-Indian man accused of a heinous series of crimes, and Doyle, who investigates the case. In the drama, the creator of Sherlock Holmes turns real-life detective, attempting to prove the innocence of an attorney named George Edalji, portrayed by Arsher Ali. Art Malik (The Jewel in the Crown), Emma Fielding (Cranford), Charles Edwards (Downton Abbey) and Hattie Morahan (Sense and Sensibility) co-star. In other Sunday-night Masterpiece Mystery! programming this month, WETA presents more Sherlock, Season 3 episodes (September 6 and 13)and reprises the pilot episode of Inspector Morse prequel Endeavour (September 20). On Thursday nights (September 10 excluded), catch BBC Miss Marple productions starring Joan Hickson.

WETA UK Highlights The Great British Baking Show, Season II new season of the engaging baking competition premieres this month on WETA UK (and WETA TV 26/HD) welcoming a new baker’s dozen to the big tent to vie for the prize: to be named the U.K.’s best amateur baker. For comic relief, hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins once again coax contestants through their Signature, Technical and Showstopper baking challenges, under the keen scrutiny of judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. With 13 bakers — from space engineer to student, teacher to dentist, psychologist to carpenter — Mary and Paul may decide at any time to banish not one but two bakers. After 10 weeks of whisking, crimping and piping, only one can emerge victorious. Season II episodes at 9 p.m. are preceded by Season 1 shows at 8 p.m. each week on WETA UK.

Masterpiece Mystery!: Grantchester

P

eople confide things in a parish priest that they never tell police, and in the mystery series Grantchester, set in a beautiful hamlet in 1950s England, the local priest turns private eye — with dramatic results. James Norton (Death Comes to Pemberley) stars as Sidney Chambers, a young, charismatic, jazz-loving vicar who becomes an amateur investigator when one of his parishioners dies under suspicious circumstances. For help, Chambers turns to gruff, down-to-earth police inspector Geordie Keating, portrayed by Robson Green (Reckless), and the two strike up a friendship and become crime-solving partners. Based on the acclaimed novel Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death by James Runcie, Grantchester takes Sidney — and new collaborator Geordie — through a series of challenging cases that explore jealousy, prejudice, class conflict and plain-old passion.

r. & Mrs. Murder, a comedic murder-mystery series from Australia, follows the adventures of married couple Nicola and Charlie Buchanan (Kat Stewart and Shaun Micallef), who run an industrial cleaning business that specializes in clean-ups of crime scenes.

Charlie is a bit of a social misfit with an encyclopedic knowledge of just about everything, and Nicola is a clean freak with a heightened sense of justice. Combining their talents, and using the experience and observational powers they’ve developed cleaning up after crimes, they become amateur sleuths. As the Buchanans go about their work, they collect evidence and clues the police may have missed, and they often get carried away helping solve cases the authorities have difficulty closing. Season I airs each Tuesday at 8 p.m., and the series begins anew on September 22, repeating each Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Also on WETA UK: WETA reprises Downton Abbey, Season II on Fridays at 10 p.m. beginning September 11. WETA UK will then air subsequent series of the blockbuster drama throughout the fall leading up to the broadcast premiere of the sixth and final season in January. Among other programming, quirky detective series Dalziel & Pascoe enters Season VIII on Saturday, September 12 at 10 p.m.; and WETA UK features the first season of Masterpiece Mystery! series Sherlock on Mondays, September 14–28 at 10:30 p.m.

uring September, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s birth on Classical WETA 90.9 FM Sunday-night broadcast Choral Showcase.

His Magnificat and Berlin Mass air on the program on September 6, and Passio (Pärt’s Saint John Passion) airs on September 13. All three works are in the style that Pärt adopted in the mid-1970s — tintinnabulation — in which simplicity and unity are the focus of the creative process (for Pärt) and the listening experience (for us).

Part of my listening experience at Virginia’s Castleton Festival a few years back was violinist Jennifer Koh telling me that one of the reasons she’s a musician is because of music’s ability to transport us across time. There are countless examples, and perhaps a piece by Pärt is a favorite for you. In particular though, when the point of a piece is to tell a familiar story (even though we know perfectly well how the story turns out), it’s that miracle of time transport that keeps us going back to it again and again, in spite of its familiarity.

Peter Sellars, the American theater director, known for his inspired opera stagings, spoke about music’s time-expanding qualities a few years ago when the staged version of John Adams’s Gospel According to the Other Mary — Mary Magdalene — was performed with the LA Philharmonic. (Sellars did the staging and wrote the

libretto.) Thanks to music, he said, we can each personally experience events, including ones of huge magnitude like Christ’s Passion. Further, we can know that each time we go back to the story, we’ll experience something new — thanks to music.

Adams’s Gospel takes time transport even further by including not only Christ’s Passion (in the foreground), but also bits and pieces of contemporary events. By weaving past and present, we find ourselves, as Adams points out, in a story that is “out of time.”

Recalling that Bach did essentially the same thing in his Passions — incorporating contemporary poetry within the Biblical telling of the story — and with Pärt’s birth anniversary in our foreground, we’ve scheduled Pärt’s Passio on September 13, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion on September 20, and John Adams’s Gospel According to the Other Mary on September 27.

Appealing to listeners regardless of nationality, cultural background or age, his creative output and unique tintinnabuli style (from tintinnabulum — Latin: “little bell”) has opened our ears to a new way of understanding the nature Joyce Yang of music. Hear for yourself Monday night, September 7, as Classical WETA local concert broadcast Front Row Washington celebrates Mr. Pärt’s 80th birthday (b. September 11, 1935) with “The Music of Arvo Pärt,” a Phillips Collection Leading European Composers recital presented in May 2014 by the Arvo Pärt Project. Members of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra perform Für Alina, composed in 1976 after many years of silence and marking a major shift in Pärt’s creative approach. Also on the program is Fratres, one of Pärt’s best-known works, as well as the world premiere of an arrangement of his song “My Heart’s in the Highlands” with text by Scottish poet Robert Burns.

September 14: Guitar fans won’t want to miss Adam Kossler’s debut recital for the John E. Marlow Guitar Series, a project of the metro D.C. area’s International Conservatory of Music. From Bach’s ever-popular Prelude, Fugue and Allegro in E-flat major to familiar works by Rodrigo and Tárrega, Mr. Kossler’s program also features two of his own transcriptions of works by Sibelius. He concludes his recital with the celebrated 19th-century concert guitarist and luthier Luigi Legnani’s virtuosic Gran Variations Op. 16.

September 21: Olivier Messiaen composed his Quartet for the End of Augustin Hadelich Time while he was a P.O.W. at the Nazis’ Stalag VIII-A camp in Silesia.

Inspired by a passage from the Book of Revelation wherein a mighty angel says, “There shall be time no longer,” Messiaen scored the work for the players he had at hand in the prison camp — clarinet, violin and cello, with himself at the piano. Messiaen’s own descriptions of each of the work’s eight movements reference “the harmonious silence of heaven,” and “notes of shining sound and a halo of trills that lose themselves high in the trees.” America’s Dream Chamber Artists perform this celebrated work in a Chamber Music from the Barns at Wolf Trap recital.
