n behalf of viewers nationwide, WETA creates superb programming, including engaging explorations of American history that present stories of our collective heritage and diverse culture. In September, as we mark Hispanic Heritage Month, we are proud to bring to air the landmark six-hour film Latino Americans, the first major documentary television series to illuminate the history of what is now our nation’s largest minority population.

This fascinating production expands the American narrative and explores the evolution of Latino American identity.

Another WETA co-production, PBS NewsHour, also makes history this month, as distinguished journalists Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff become exclusive co-anchors of the weeknight broadcasts — the first women to share the helm of an American network newscast. We congratulate Gwen and Judy and their esteemed colleagues who continue to make PBS NewsHour the nation’s most trusted news report. Weekend Broadcasts Premiere in September

ublic television’s marquee newscast, PBS NewsHour, a co-production of WETA and MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, in August named Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff as co‑anchors and managing editors of the broadcast, the first time in American broadcast history that two women will co‑anchor an evening news series. The creation of the co-anchorship, which formally begins Monday, September 9, ends the rotating anchor format that has been in place since the retirement of Jim Lehrer in 2011. Ifill and Woodruff will helm the broadcast together Monday through Thursday, and on Fridays, Woodruff will anchor solo as Ifill continues her role as moderator and managing editor of WETA’s weekly public affairs program Washington Week with Gwen Ifill.

PBS NewsHour also announced that three NewsHour correspondents have been given specific areas of content responsibility: Jeffrey Brown was named NewsHour’s Chief Correspondent for Arts, Culture, and Society; Ray Suarez was named Chief National Correspondent; and Margaret Warner was named Chief Foreign Correspondent.

The NewsHour also launches new, half-hour weekend broadcasts — PBS NewsHour Weekend — airing each Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD, beginning September 7. Hari Sreenivasan, who will report for PBS NewsHour as newly named Senior Correspondent, and who also serves as the program’s director of digital partnerships, will anchor the new weekend broadcasts, based in New York.

Like the weekday edition of PBS NewsHour, PBS NewsHour Weekend will feature a summary of the day’s national and international news, with experts offering analysis. Each weekend broadcast will also contain original reporting. The New York team will contribute to NewsHour’s weekday on-air reporting and will publish the program’s mobile, social media and digital platforms, including the NewsHour website, pbs.org/newshour, extending news coverage to seven days a week.

erek Jacobi and Anne Reid lead a stellar cast in the six-part, BAFTA Award-winning BBC miniseries Last Tango in Halifax, an uplifting contemporary comic drama about romance and second chances, love, loss and hope. In the 2012 series, so popular with British audiences that a sequel series has already been commissioned, childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia, both widowed and in their 70s, fall for each other a second time when they are reunited on the Internet after nearly 60 years. As their lives collide, the couple laments what might have been as they begin a life-affirming journey together. While their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age, it is also a story about family and the complications the relationship causes, especially for their grown daughters.

Masterpiece Mystery!: Foyle’s War VII

M

ichael Kitchen returns to his signature role as World War II-era British sleuth Christopher Foyle in three new episodes of the popular Mystery! series, joined by his loyal friend Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks). Set in post-war 1946–47, the new cases, The Eternity Ring, The Cage and Sunflower, feature Foyle and Sam adjusting to a new era of secrets, intelligence and security as their worlds shift from the police force into MI5, the British domestic intelligence agency. Foyle, in his new role as a Senior Intelligence Officer, focuses his attention on the world of espionage as he gathers secret intelligence in support of Britain’s security, defense and the government’s foreign and economic policies. Meanwhile, Sam, reunited with Foyle, is also offered a surprising new working role.

Great Performances: The Hollow Crown four-part miniseries presented as part of performing arts series Great Performances’ 40th season on the air assembles four of Shakespeare’s most gripping history plays — Richard II (September 20), Henry IV, Parts I & II (September 27–October 4), and Henry V (October 11) — into a single chronological narrative in large-scale film adaptations. The plays, filmed on location in England and set in their authentic medieval period, feature a cast of some of the pre-eminent Shakespearean actors of our time, including Ben Wishaw, Jeremy Irons (right), Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, David Suchet, David Morrissey, Michelle Dockery (of Downton Abbey), Julie Walters, Maxine Peake, John Hurt, and Anton Lesser among others. The films — chronicling a bloody tale of family, politics and power — explore the rule of three kings and how their destiny shaped English history.

Rich Historical Content The series relies on historical accounts and personal experiences to vividly tell the stories of early settlement, conquest and immigration; of tradition and reinvention; of anguish and celebration; and of the gradual construction of an American identity that connects millions of people today. Airing over the course of three nationwide broadcasts, Latino Americans is divided into six chronological parts that span a 500-year arc of history.

“Latino Americans covers centuries of history about native-born Latinos and immigrants from throughout the Americas,” said Bosch, a Cuban-born filmmaker whose projects include Latin Music U.S.A. and documentaries for the series American Experience. “We do not shy away from addressing key issues of legitimacy, justice, discrimination and the very meaning of citizenship. The series has great cinematography, incisive interviews, evocative archive materials — but what I am most proud of is that we were able to tell history in the first person. That is what makes our stories compelling and profoundly human.

It is the story of Latinos, and it is the story of America.”

ETA presents the landmark six-hour series Latino Americans, the first major documentary film for television to chronicle the rich, varied history of Latinos, who have helped shape what is today the United States over the last 500 years. Five years in the making and epic in scope, the WETA co-production documents the experience of what is now the largest minority group in the U.S., exploring the evolution of a new “Latino American” identity from the 1500s to the present day. Airing as part of WETA’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Latino Americans includes interviews with nearly 100 Latinos from the worlds of politics, business and pop culture, as well as deeply personal portraits of Latinos who lived through key chapters in American history.

The series is produced by WETA; Bosch and Co., Inc.; and Latino Public Broadcasting; in association with Independent Television Service. The Latino Americans project was conceived by WETA’s Jeff Bieber, executive producer of the film, who created the documentary with co-executive producers Dalton Delan of WETA, Sandie Viquez Pedlow of LPB, series producer Adriana Bosch, and a team of filmmakers on each episode.

Distinguished Participants The series features interviews with an array of individuals, including Puerto Rican entertainer Rita Moreno, a winner of Academy, Tony, Grammy and Emmy Awards; labor leader and 2012 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Dolores Huerta, who co-founded with César Chávez the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers of America); Mexican-American author and commentator Linda Chávez, the highest-ranking woman in the Reagan White House; and Cuban-born superstar singer and entrepreneur Gloria Estefan.

• Episode 1: Foreigners in Their Own Land surveys the history and people, from the first Spanish explorations in North America to the Mexican-American War. • Episode 2: Empire of Dreams examines how the American population was reshaped by Latino immigration from 1880 to 1941.

Texas congressman whose district was also represented by his father, Henry B. Gonzalez, for nearly 40 years; and Herman Badillo, the Bronx politician who became the first Puerto Rican elected to the House of Representatives.

The diversity of the Latino American experience is reflected in both the on-camera interview subjects and the filmmaking staff. The production team, most of which is composed of Latino Americans, includes individuals who are of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Salvadoran and Dominican heritage.

The site also includes a page where individuals and communities can submit

personal video stories. Via hashtag #LatinosPBS on Twitter, viewers can join the national conversation surrounding the film and learn about program-related events, such as a September 25 Latino Americans screening at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. The film also includes a companion book, Latino Americans: The 500-Year Legacy That Shaped a Nation, by Ray Suarez. All components of the Latino Americans project are fully bilingual; the Spanishlanguage version of the film is available on the WETA broadcast on the SAP channel.

hat would it be like to see the world from a bird’s perspective? State-of-the-art technology and sophisticated camera techniques have now made it possible to do just that: a special six-part Nature miniseries, Earthflight, presents a breathtaking aerial journey over six continents, spotlighting natural wonders, wildlife spectacles, migrations and stunning landscapes of North America (September 4), Africa (September 11), Europe (September 18), South America (September 25), and Asia and Australia (October 2) — all from a bird’s-eye view. For four years, filmmaker John Downer and his team followed 100 bird species in 40 different countries to capture amazing footage. The sixth and final episode, Flying High (October 9), features a behind-the-scenes look at how the series was created.

ETA reprises the acclaimed six-part, 12-hour documentary film The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, a co-production of WETA and Florentine Films that was directed by Ken Burns and co-produced with his colleague Dayton Duncan, who also wrote the script. The film explores the history of America’s national parks and spotlights the people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved. Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of the nation’s most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska — The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is the story of the radical American idea that the most special places in the nation should be preserved for all to enjoy. The WETA UK Event: Downton Abbey, Season III & Mr. Selfridge

A

fter presenting Seasons I and II of Masterpiece series Downton Abbey in August, WETA UK features Season III its entirety on the first three Saturday nights in September. In Season III — the highest-rated PBS drama of all time, seen by more than 24 million viewers when it premiered in January 2013 — Shirley MacLaine joins the cast. The Great War is over and the long-awaited engagement of Lady Mary and Matthew is on, but all is not tranquil as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises grip the estate. When Series III wraps up, WETA UK presents eight-part series Mr. Selfridge, starring Jeremy Piven (right) as a flamboyant, wheeling-dealing American who shows early 1900s Londoners how to shop. Following the popularity of Season I, a second season of Mr. Selfridge — based on the life of retail magnate Henry Gordon Selfridge — is in the works for 2014.

The Ambassador

auline Collins stars in the series The Ambassador, a powerful, thrilling drama set in a world of deception, mistrust and betrayal. Collins plays Ambassador Harriet Smith, who holds one of Britain’s most coveted embassy posts as emissary to Ireland. John Stone, played by Denis Lawson, is Harriet’s determined commercial attaché and main aide. But Stone also answers to another master — MI6 (the British Intelligence Agency). The Ambassador’s job as troubleshooter for Britain takes her into a sinister and dangerous world far removed from the cocktail parties of Downing Street, and the episodes explore political themes and the personal and professional pressures in Harriet’s life. The series is created by award-winning writer Russell Lewis (Inspector Morse, Sharpe) and filmed on location in Dublin.

Beginning Sunday, September 8 for example, WETA UK features the miniseries Queen and Country, with honored U.K. journalist Sir Trevor McDonald (l) exploring traditions and institutions of the British monarchy; the series Wild Indonesia, which spotlights the flora and fauna of the most varied archipelago on Earth; and the epic nature series Life of Mammals, written and presented by BBC wildlife filmmaker extraordinaire Sir David Attenborough, who examines the evolution and habits of the various mammal species. lassical WETA 90.9 FM weekend host Judy Gruber retired in July after two decades on the air at the station.

Throughout her tenure, Gruber was a regular presence on WETA radio broadcasts throughout the schedule, hosting a variety of classical music programs. She also represented WETA in the community through her many public appearances, pre-concert lectures and interviews at venues throughout Greater Washington. Since last October, Gruber has been in partial retirement, but continued weekend on-air hosting on Classical WETA and substituting for her on-air colleagues as needed.

Gruber said, “I have always had classical music in my life, and I’ve enjoyed working in radio because I love the music and I’ve loved being able to share it with people.

Through the years, it’s been such a pleasure to meet our listeners and experience their passion for the music. When they get really excited about a piece, so too do you, the announcer — it’s a wonderful two-way Judy Gruber street.”

Dan DeVany, vice president and general manager of Classical WETA, said, “Judy’s unflagging good nature, warm heart and consummate professionalism will be missed. We wish Judy well and thank her for her many years of service to WETA and the Washington community.”

In addition to her duties at Classical WETA, Gruber has also been very active in Washington-area arts. Opera is among Gruber’s great interests, and she is a founder and former executive director of the Washington Concert Opera. Gruber also reviewed classical music for The Washington Post for five years, and she has worked as a program annotator for a wide array of local arts organizations.

Judy Gruber Retires from Weekend Shift

September 14: Handel’s Agrippina Flemish Opera, Ghent Paul McCreesh, conductor Handel’s Italian operas made him the toast of London long before his famous English oratorios caught the public’s ear. Agrippina is named for Nero’s shrewd mother, without whom the infamous emperor could never have fiddled while Rome burned.

September 21: Puccini’s Madame Butterfly Grand Liceu Theatre, Barcelona Josep Pons, conductor Cast includes Hui He (Butterfly) and Roberto Alagna (Pinkerton).

A much-loved masterpiece, Puccini’s Butterfly combines an exotic setting with true, verismo passions in a cautionary tale warning that the meeting of divergent cultures can lead to both rich rewards, and tragic misunderstanding.

September 28: Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri Teatro Regio, Turin Daniele Rustioni, conductor The plot of this opera is more than a little bit silly, but Rossini’s comedy features a sparkling score.

Also this month, on Monday, September 9 at 9 p.m., Moscow-born pianist Alexander Melnikov plays Robert Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13, Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata in A Major, and works by Alexander Scriabin in a Phillips Collection recital recorded earlier this year.

Works by Beethoven, Ravel, Prokofiev and Sergei Rachmaninoff, including his Sonata in B-flat minor, Op. 36, No. 2 and Prelude No. 4, Op. 23, are featured on Monday, September 23 at 9 p.m. as Front Row Washington presents a Phillips Collection recital by British pianist Steven Osborne, winner of both the Naumburg International and Clara Haskil Competitions.

The broadcast wraps up the month on September 30 at 9 p.m. with violinist Benjamin Beilman, a 2012 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner, alongside pianist Amy Yang in performance at Candlelight Concert Society of Columbia, Maryland. Their program includes Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for violin and piano, Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Op. 100, Olivier Messiaen’s Fantasy for violin and piano, and Franz Schubert’s Fantasy for violin and piano in C Major (Sei mir gegrüsst!), D. 934.

Choral Showcase in September

lassical WETA broadcast Choral Showcase smoothes out the end of summer on the Labor Day weekend program, on September 1, with a work by 17th-century English composer Henry Purcell, who, having just been appointed one of the organists at the English Chapel Royal, was asked to write something for the autumn-time return to London of King Charles II and the Duke of York. It’s a patriotic Ode called Summer’s Absence Unconcerned We Bear. Another English work, 20th-century composer and organist Harold Darke’s In the Bleak Mid-Winter, follows the Purcell composition. The broadcast also celebrates transitions of the year with Haydn’s oratorio, The Seasons.

On the September 8 program, Classical WETA features works about great defenders, featuring parts of George Frideric Handel’s nod to one of the greatest warriors in Jewish history in his oratorio Judas Maccabaeus. Nicholas McGegan conducts. One excerpt is “See, the conqu’ring hero comes,” which is the tune Beethoven used in one of his sets of variations for cello and piano. The broadcast also features a nod to 13th-century Russian leader Alexander Nevsky, who defended against German and Swedish invaders. Prokofiev’s cantata about the legendary figure was derived from his brilliantly effective score for Sergei Eisenstein’s epic 1938 film, Alexander Nevsky.

On September 15 and 22, Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts two masterful settings of the Mass — Mozart’s “Great” Mass and Beethoven’s grand Missa solemnis.

his month, locally based ensembles the Mendelssohn Piano Trio and the Left Bank Quartet top the bill on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s broadcast Front Row Washington, which features local concert performances by world-class ensembles. On Monday, September 16th at 9 p.m., the broadcast presents the Mendelssohn Piano Trio in performance at the National Gallery of Art in a concert described by The Washington Post as “so lush, substantial and richly flavored you wanted to eat it with a knife and fork.” This wonderful recital features Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66, and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A Minor, Op. 50. The Mendelssohn Piano Trio is composed of pianist Ya-Ting Chang, from Taiwan; violinist Peter Sirotin, from Russia; and cellist Fiona Thompson from England.
