n October, WETA premieres a new season of the fascinating genealogy and history series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the latest fruit of our collaboration with eminent scholar Skip Gates. A dear friend, Skip has worked with WETA for years. We are very pleased to share Season 6 episodes of this extraordinary series — a WETA co-production with our partners at McGee Media, Inkwell Films and Kunhardt Films — with viewers in Greater Washington and around the nation via PBS. We are also delighted that the rollout of Season 6 extends the on-air presence of this very popular production into Spring and Fall 2020.

The engrossing explorations of celebrity guests’ ancestries offer an opportunity to learn about our shared past and meet a panoply of intriguing figures. The arc of each guest’s family story personalizes history while illuminating the human connections that unite us.

Skip has produced an array of exceptional history series, including the Peabody Award-winning documentary The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross, the documentary African American Lives and — in recent collaborations with WETA — Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise (2016), Africa’s Great Civilizations (2017) and, earlier this year, Reconstruction: America After the Civil War, in addition to multiple seasons of Finding Your Roots.

These projects have presented thoughtful, illuminating explorations of history and identity in America and beyond.

new season of the fascinating ancestry series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. — produced in partnership with WETA — presents more stories that spotlight the heritage of America’s Melissa McCarthy with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. best-known celebrities. Each program features detailed explorations of participants’ families histories, assembled through genealogy research and DNA science, to reveal long-buried secrets.

At the center of the proceedings, guiding every discovery, is WETA collaborator and Finding Your Roots series host and executive producer Henry Louis Gates, Jr. — the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research.

Season 6 of Finding Your Roots, a production of McGee Media, Inkwell Films, Kunhardt Films and WETA, in association with Ark Media, premieres two new episodes this month on October 8 and 15, followed by five encore presentations this fall. Then the series returns in January with eight episodes and more in Fall 2020, showcasing new guests and remixed thematic combinations of former participants’ stories. Altogether, the sixth season of Finding Your Roots features 27 new guests who are prominent in their fields, with family histories that illustrate the power and diversity of the human experience.

Among the participants in Season 6 are actors Jeffrey Wright, Sigourney Weaver, Melissa McCarthy and Sterling K. Brown; groundbreaking director Jordan Peele; Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi; acclaimed journalists Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell; musicians Queen Latifah and Jon Batiste; legendary fashion designers Diane von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez and Zac Posen; as well as a host of other luminaries, including Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, Isabella Rossellini, Terry Gross, Marc Maron, Eric Stonestreet, Issa Rae, Amy Ryan and Justina Machado. Some of the guests whose stories the series revisits this season include Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, Lisa Ling, Joe Madison, Questlove, and Jimmy Kimmel.

Finding Your Roots compiles family trees that trace throughout the globe, and the story of each guest’s family personalizes history while emphasizing the connections that unite humanity. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., said, “Our series strives to show how all Americans are related, despite our present divisive politics, at the most fundamental levels of all: through our families, through our immigrant experiences, whether forced or voluntary, and at the level of the genome.”

Why Bridges Collapse (October 16) spotlights the 2018 collapse of Italy’s Morandi Bridge, which killed 43. NOVA investigates what went wrong and explores other bridge collapses around the globe. Look Who’s Driving (October 23) explores the development of self-driving cars, examining what computers must be capable of to take the wheel and become safer than human drivers. In encore presentations, Inside the Megafire (October 2) explores what was behind the deadly conflagrations that swept through California in 2018; Day the Dinosaurs Died (October 9), investigates evidence of an asteroid that vanquished the dinosaurs 66 million years ago; and Secrets of the Sky Tombs (October 30) follows daring scientists who unearth secrets buried in the world’s highest tombs, tucked in cliffside Himalayan caves.

new magazine-format series, Retro Report on PBS, provides historical context to today’s headlines, making sense of the present by revealing stories’ unknown — and often surprising — connections to the past. Journalist Celeste Headlee and artist/actor Masud Olufani host the broadcasts, and New Yorker humorist Andy Borowitz adds his signature wit. Eight episodes air this month; each is produced by Retro Report, a non-profit organization whose mission is to arm the public with a complete picture of today’s most important stories. The series aims to provide new insights while correcting the record and exposing myths along the way. Each episode explores four distinct stories, closing with the segment “Now It All Makes Sense,” featuring Borowitz.

Topics to be explored include how decades-old research on human behavior shows that social media’s addictive power is by design rather than chance; why half a million children still have dangerously high lead levels even though it was banned from gasoline and household products decades ago; how the sex-education policies of today are informed by failures of programs created during the Clinton era; and why mandatory arbitration agreements enacted on Wall Street 20 years ago have had a negative impact on today’s #MeToo movement.

earn the incredible true story of an Auschwitz survivor’s journey to forgiveness and healing. At the age of 10, Romanian-born Eva Mozes Kor fought to stay alive inside the concentration camp where she and her twin sister Miriam endured cruel experiments devised

by Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. After decades of torment and pain following her liberation, she decided to use her experiences as a teaching tool for other generations. Despite health issues, the 4-foot-9, 85-year-old circled the globe delivering her messages of healing and self-empowerment. She addressed current global atrocities — and problems facing today’s youth, such as bullying and discrimination.

Narrated by actor Ed Asner, the film weaves Eva’s story together with interviews from CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, whose grandparents perished in the Holocaust, actor Elliott Gould, and others.

ETA presents one of Oxford’s most famous exports, the character Inspector Endeavour Morse, in what has proven to be one of the world’s most popular detective dramas. Before Endeavour and Lewis, there was Inspector Morse. John Thaw stars as author Colin Dexter’s great sleuth, a gentle romantic with a cantankerous nature and a passion for ale, cryptic crosswords and classical music. Morse has a squeamish nature, but his junior colleague DS Robbie Lewis (Kevin Whately) is more down-to-earth, and it is Lewis’ attention to detail that aids Morse. October episodes, airing each Thursday night, start the series from the beginning — and are followed by episodes of detective series Vera, starring Brenda Blethyn.

et in the world of newspapers in London — its past riven by hacking scandals, its present at the mercy of the digital age and the 24-hour news cycle, its future uncertain — the new six-part Masterpiece drama Press explores the current, turbulent media landscape and the ethical dilemmas that journalists and editors face each day. The production features an ensemble cast portraying the committed and passionate characters behind the daily news at two fictional, rival newspapers. Above (l-r), the series stars Priyanga Burford (King Charles III) as editor of broadsheet The Herald; Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders) as news editor of The Herald; Ben Chaplin (Apple Tree Yard) as the editor of tabloid newspaper The Post; Paapa Essiedu (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Hamlet) as The Post’s newest reporter; and David Suchet (Poirot) as top executive of The Post.

Also on Masterpiece each Sunday in October are the final seasons of dramas The Durrells in Corfu (at 8 p.m.) and Poldark (at 9 p.m.), which got underway on September 29. The former, based on author Gerald Durrell’s memoirs, wraps up the story of his eccentric, chaotic family’s four years (1935-1939) on the beautiful Greek isle. Keeley Hawes leads the cast as the family matriarch. Dramaromance Poldark, starring Aidan Turner in the title role and Eleanor Tomlinson as his spouse Demelza, follows the protagonist as he tries to put politics and intrigue behind him and return to life in scenic Cornwall.

eriod history drama Jamestown, from the makers of Downton Abbey, continues with a third and final season spotlighting the early Virginia colony. In the eight episodes of Series 3, it is boom time in Jamestown but success brings the scrutiny of the Crown and there are few in the settlement who have nothing to hide. Relations with the Native American Pamunkey tribe offer hope and advancement for the settlers until greed for land and want of power corrupts those with influence. What ensues is tyranny, a revenge plot and devastating conflict, the fallout of which will shape the New World for centuries to come. Series 3 continues to follow the fortunes of three women in the 17th-century settlement (above): Jocelyn (Naomi Battrick), Alice Sharrow (Sophie Rundle) and Verity (Niamh Walsh).

ETA TV 26/HD premieres new episodes of the Wednesday-night program Nature this month as the series’ 38th season gets underway. First to air is Octopus: Making Contact (October 2), in which a professor in Alaska raises a pet octopus in his home and makes remarkable discoveries about its exceptional intelligence, personality and skills. Next is The Serengeti Rules (October 9), which explores spectacular places on Earth alongside scientists whose discoveries about the impact of reinstating keystone species into downgraded environments alter our understanding of nature. Then, Undercover in the Jungle (October 16) goes deep in the Amazon rainforest to highlight biodiversity and encounter extraordinary creatures, from pygmy marmosets to pumas. The three-part miniseries Okavango: River of Dreams (October 23-30 & November 6), filmed by the Emmy Award-winning duo Dereck and Beverly Joubert (Nature: Soul of the Elephant), spotlights the wildlife of southern Africa’s Okavango Delta, an oasis and lush paradise that connects and supports a wide array of creatures, including lions, elephants, hippos and crocodiles. new miniseries from the BBC’s famed Natural History Unit and PBS spotlights how a diverse cast of animals is adjusting to life in the newest and fastest-changing habitat on the planet — cities — as more and more wild animals make their home in urban areas. Wild Metropolis presents footage of these animals and examines how they have applied their natural-born skills and abilities to create their homes while also making great physical and behavioral adaptations. A wide range of species is featured, from humpback whales in New York’s Hudson River to colonies of megabats in Adelaide, from penguins in Cape Town to otters in Singapore and Burmese pythons on Bangkok streets. The series explores some of the world’s best-known cities from the perspective of the animals who live in them. The three programs are Residents (October 2), Commuters (October 9), and Survivors (October 16).

ehold Earth from above in the four-part miniseries Life from Above. Cameras in space tell stories of life on our planet from a new perspective, revealing its movements, colors, patterns and just how fast it’s changing. Moving Planet (October 23), spotlights motion, from individual animals to powerful weather systems: follow the black shadowing of a total solar eclipse and marvel at thousands of Shaolin Kung Fu students performing in synchronicity. Colorful Planet (October 30), features Earth’s kaleidoscope of color: swirls of phytoplankton triggering an oceanic feeding frenzy, millions of flowers blooming in China, and waters off the coast of Argentina dotted with mysterious green lights. Next month, Patterned Planet (November 6) explores Earth’s weird and wonderful shapes: wombats designing their own landscape in Australia and hundreds of forest elephants creating a tear in the green of the Congo forest canopy. Last, Changing Planet (November 13) examines how fast cities are growing, forests are disappearing, and glaciers are melting — and how fast we can regenerate a landscape.

t his mysterious country windmill, illusionist Jonathan Creek (comedian-actor Alan Davies) devises spectacular stage stunts for a magician — and on the side employs his extraordinary skills to crack baffling murder mysteries. A TV crime series recruits Creek’s talents and he is reunited with his former girlfriend and old sparring partner, Carla Borrego (Julia Sawalha, Absolutely Fabulous, Lark Rise to Candleford), a determined amateur detective who has no intention of playing second fiddle to her disheveled ex. Together, the pair tackles six cases that stump the authorities, including the curious case of a policewoman who has been slain inside an empty gym.

Beneath the surface is a dark and simmering past, and Jason is thrust into a complicated web of treachery and deceit. Aided by studious young Pythagoras (Robert Emms) and overbearing Hercules (Mark Addy), he embarks on a voyage of discovery through Greek myths and legends.

wo series — four programs — narrated by Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) examine why and how humans have developed such a unique and long-lasting relationship with dogs, a companion to humankind for thousands of years and the most diverse species of mammal on the planet. The first program offers insight into the way dogs understand us, spotlighting how the true success of their species is our mutually beneficial relationship. Then three programs examine the diversity of dogs, separating them into distinct tribes that give rise to the episodes’ titles and content — the guardians (Man’s Best Friend), the workers (Working Like a Dog) and the companions (We Are Family).

ach Sunday night, Classical WETA’s Choral Showcase celebrates the rich treasure of choral music from the 12th century to the present day.

We’ll hear French music from across the centuries on October 6, beginning with chant from the 12th though the 14th centuries, followed by two settings of the Stabat Mater, one by Sebastien de Brossard and another by 20th-century composer Francis Poulenc.

Then we present music for troubled times on October 13 — Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis, or the “Nelson Mass,” written in 1798 during a very Mozart with sister Maria Anna and father Leopold difficult period when much of Europe and North Africa was beset by Napoleon’s armies. But there’s a taste of victory with Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum, a work written to commemorate the British victory over the French in 1743 during the War of Austrian Succession.

On October 20, we celebrate music’s patron saint with Henry Purcell’s Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day, Hail, Bright Cecilia. We’ll also hear Benjamin Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia, a work that will also be presented in a series of concerts in and around Washington, D.C. by The Thirteen Choir under Matthew Robinson, October 25-27.

We feature music from the Mozart family on October 27, with a performance of a rarely heard work by Leopold Mozart, his Missa Solemnis, from a new recording by the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic and Das Vokalprojekt.

From Leopold’s son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, we hear a collection from his Salzburg years entitled Vesperae Solennes de Confessore — which includes the well-known Laudate Dominum. That work, along with the Harmoniemesse by Haydn, will be heard when Steven Fox leads the Cathedral Choral Society in their season-opening concert at Washington National Cathedral on October 20.

Classical for Washington Phillips Collection Concerts on Front Row Washington Mondays at 9 p.m.

his month on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Monday evening program Front Row Washington, we listen to a variety of concerts from the Phillips Collection, including a performance by pianist Wu Han, who was featured in Episode 2 of our new podcast, Classical Breakdown. She is one of the most influential Wu Han and David Finckel musicians in chamber music, and on the podcast she talks about her start in music, why she is so passionate about music, and more (you can listen on ClassicalBreakdown.org). On October 21 we listen to Wu Han with cellist David Finckel in a concert from the Phillips Collection. They perform music written for them — by American composer Bruce Adolphe — called Couple. It’s a fitting title, as Wu Han and David are married, and as the composer says about the title, it’s “an intensification of the more common musical word Duo.” The pair also performs works by JS Bach, Felix Mendelssohn and Edvard Grieg.

On October 7, we feature another family duo, legendary violinist Miriam Fried and her son, Jonathan Biss, a critically acclaimed pianist. They perform 19th- and 20th-century music by Brahms, Beethoven and Bartok.

The October 14 broadcast presents a unique concert of 20th-century music featuring two pianists, Frederic Rzewski and Ursula Oppens, and violinist Jennifer Koh. Rzewski is also a composer; they perform his work The Same Old Story (Mile 52 of The Road) and they give the world premiere performance of Notasonata. Also featured on the program are Piano Four Hands by Morton Feldman and Grand Duo by Lou Harrison.

We hear a concert featuring Finnish piano virtuoso Paavali Jumppanen on October 28. He plays Book 1 of preludes by the composer who once called the piano a “box of hammers and strings” — Claude Debussy. It includes the iconic prelude The Girl with the Flaxen Hair and, in the second half of the concert, Jumppanen performs the Piano Sonata No. 29 “Hammerklavier” by Ludwig van Beethoven.

he National Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2019-2020 season on Saturday, September 28 with a glamorous opening night concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Classical WETA will be there, and we’ll bring you a special broadcast of this signature Washington event on Wednesday morning, October 2 at 11 a.m. Music Director Gianandrea Noseda’s lively program will celebrate the influence of jazz on classical music.

You’ll enjoy music by Bernstein (Divertimento), Gershwin (An American in Paris), Stravinsky (Circus Polka and Scherzo à la russe) and two works by Shostakovich — his Jazz Suite No.2 and the highly entertaining Piano Concerto No.1.
