s the nation enters the final weeks of the Election 2012 campaign, WETA invites you to tune in for programming on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD that spotlights the candidates, explores the issues, and covers the next milestone campaign events — the debates this month. As you prepare to cast your ballot in November, stay informed with the trusted, in-depth reporting and incisive analysis that WETA television programming provides.

In addition to ongoing robust coverage of Election 2012 news in its nightly broadcasts, PBS NewsHour offers special reports this month, presenting live coverage of the four candidate debates. Like the nightly newscast, the special reports, to be broadcast on PBS stations nationwide, are created by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions and WETA. On Tuesday, October 9 at 9 p.m., Frontline presents The Choice 2012, its quadrennial biographies of the two major party presidential candidates. The program repeats October 10 at 4 p.m., October 14 at 2:30 p.m. and October 26 at 9 p.m. In the program, Frontline documents the places, people and decisive moments that made the men who are competing for the presidency. Hundreds of hours of research and dozens of original interviews reveal new details and fresh insights about the two candidates.

Frontline: The Choice 2012 — October 9

e now enter the final weeks of Campaign 2012, when politics reach fever pitch in the run-up to Election Day, November 6. In preparation for casting their ballots, voters are educating themselves about the candidates, issues, and policy positions, and the political parties’ visions for the nation’s future.

This is a time when public television’s outstanding public affairs offerings make an important contribution to the national discourse, covering the election with depth, balance and integrity on behalf of viewers around the country. WETA plays an integral role in creating this vital programming; we present to a nationwide audience reporting and news analysis via several of the most trusted public affairs programs on television. As they have throughout the campaigns, PBS NewsHour and Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal — created in WETA’s studios — will feature the nation’s top journalists reporting the facts, cutting through the rhetoric, and illuminating the issues in these crucial weeks.

This month as well, the public affairs series Frontline rolls out its signature election-related production The Choice 2012, a journalistic exploration of the presidential candidates’ biographies. More election-related programming is spotlighted on these pages, including the next important milestones for the national candidates and their parties — the October debates. We are delighted that our colleague, PBS NewsHour executive editor Jim Lehrer, has been selected to moderate the first presidential debate on October 3. This will be his twelfth presidential debate, a statement of trust and confidence in Jim that needs no elaboration.

WETA Bulletin Board October 17 Screening Event for The Dust Bowl, a New Ken Burns Film

W

ETA members and their guests are invited to attend a Wednesday, October 17, 7 p.m. discussion and highlight screening of The Dust Bowl, a new two-part, four-hour documentary film by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan (who collaborated most recently on The National Parks: America’s Best Idea) that explores the story of the worst man-made ecological disaster in U.S. history. Event participants are Ken Burns, Dust Bowl survivor Cal Crabill, and National Geographic senior editor Peter Miller. Jim Axelrod, national correspondent for CBS News, moderates the discussion. The event takes place at The George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium at 730 21st St., NW, Washington. Admission is $10, and tickets are available at weta.org/dustbowlticket.

The Dust Bowl chronicles the environmental catastrophe that, throughout the 1930s, destroyed the farmlands of the Great Plains, turned prairies into deserts and unleashed massive, deadly dust storms. The film, a co-production of Florentine Films and WETA, premieres November 18–19 on WETA TV 26/WETA HD and PBS stations nationwide.

2011 WETA Productions Garner Awards

T

he WETA TV 26 local production The WETA Guide to More Unusual Attractions, which premiered last fall, spotlighting intriguing locations, activities and exhibitions around Greater Washington, was recognized with a national Capital Emmy Award this summer by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The program won the Emmy in the category “Magazine Program--Program/Special,” and the award recognized WETA’s Rebecca Tulkoff, Producer; and Jacqueline Todt, Executive Producer.

Also this summer, the six-hour history documentary Prohibition, created by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick in partnership with WETA, added another accolade, garnering a prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Award offering special recognition for a televised series. Prohibition — exploring the history of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the entire era it encompassed — premiered nationwide on public television stations last October.

Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to iconic performer Ellen DeGeneres in a star-studded evening of comedy in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in late October.

2011 The evening pays tribute to DeGeneres’ contributions to the world of comedy through Premieres Monday, October 31, 2011 her television programs, stand-up appearances and movies. As it has for more than a decade, WETA will capture the proceedings as a star-studded gathering of top comedians and celebrity friends celebrate DeGeneres on stage. A 90-minute special — a production of WETA, CoMedia, Mark Krantz Productions, Cappy Productions and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts — will be taped by WETA at the event and broadcast by WETA and public television stations nationwide on the evening of Tuesday, October 30.

2009 The Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize, named to honor one of the world’s greatest humorists, was established in October 1998; WETA has co-produced the television broadcast of the event since 2000. The annual programs are among PBS’s most eagerly anticipated and popular offerings. Recipients of the prize have been: Richard Pryor (1998), Jonathan Winters (1999), Carl Reiner (2000), Whoopi Goldberg (2001), Bob Newhart (2002), Lily Tomlin (2003), Lorne Michaels (2004), Steve Martin (2005), Neil Simon (2006), Billy Crystal (2007), George Carlin (2008), Bill Cosby (2009), Tina Fey (2010), and Will Ferrell (2011). WETA reprises the Fey and Cosby programs 2007 this month — October 15 and 29, respectively.

DeGeneres’ distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, in film, and in the literary world via her comedic bestselling books. Her popular syndicated talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, now in its ninth season, recently won the Daytime Emmy for “Outstanding Talk Show.” During its eight seasons, the show has earned a total of 35 Daytime Emmy Awards.

DeGeneres has hosted the Academy Awards, Primetime 2005 Emmy Awards and Grammy Awards; and she has received critical acclaim for her HBO stand-up specials — and for television work that included the series Ellen, which garnered record ratings during its 1994–1998 run.

In 1997, DeGeneres was the recipient of the coveted Peabody Award as well as earning an Emmy for writing the episode in which her character came out as a gay woman. DeGeneres has also been suc2003 cessful in her feature film work, which has included Finding Nemo, EDTV for director Ron Howard, Mr. Wrong, The Love Letter, Goodbye Lover and Coneheads.

ifestyle expert and teacher, bestselling author, and Emmy Award-winning program host Martha Stewart returns to television with a new series presented by WETA to PBS stations around the nation. In the new series, inspired by her eponymous, best-selling cookbook, the cooking and entertaining expert demonstrates kitchen basics and classic cooking techniques.

Using her signature, step-by-step how-to teaching process, Stewart illustrates the building blocks of recipes everyone should know and shares tips in each 30-minute episode, inspirA WETA PRESENTATION ing and educating home cooks. Episodes are titled, in sequence, Eggs, Sauces, Vegetables, Stocks, Butchering, Rice, Dressings and Emulsions, Steaming, Roasting, Braising, Poaching, Frying and Pan Searing.

The series airs each Saturday afternoon on TV 26, capping WETA’s how-to programming block.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide

two-night, four-hour special presentation of documentary film series Independent Lens, Half the Sky travels with New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and celebrity advocates America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde on a journey to 10 countries in Asia and Africa, where they meet women and girls who confront oppression in their daily lives — and inspiring individuals working to bring about change. The special, introduced by George Clooney and based on the acclaimed book Half the Sky by Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, spotlights women’s economic empowerment, education for girls, gender-based violence, sex trafficking, maternal mortality and health care, and forced prostitution.

hile Europe teeters on the brink of World War II, life goes on for family members upstairs and servants downstairs at London’s 165 Eaton Place — as chaotic as ever — on Upstairs Downstairs, Series II, the second season of Masterpiece’s Emmy-nominated sequel to the long-running 1970s drama series. The returning cast includes Keeley Hawes (left) as Lady Agnes Holland; Ed Stoppard (left) as her diplomat husband, Sir Hallam; and Claire Foy as Agnes’s defiant sister, Persie. Alex Kingston guest stars. In the new series, household members harbor life-changing secrets, and the menace of war creeps ever closer. Sir Hallam is drawn into dangerous waters by his preoccupation with the threat of Nazi Germany and the return of troubled Lady Persie. ow in its fourth season, the animated series Martha Speaks, based on the best-selling children’s books by Susan Meddaugh, follows the adventures of a loveable dog whose appetite for alphabet soup gives her the ability to speak. Using her newfound abilities, Martha gets jobs, wears disguises, foils bad guys and orders lots of steaks — creating an array of entanglements for herself, her family and the unsuspecting people of her town. Being a talking dog, Martha lives in a word-rich environment; the educational goal of the series is to bolster the vocabulary of 4- to 7-year-olds within the context of engaging, comical stories. Around and in between the half-hour’s two 11-minute stories are a variety of animated interstitials that reinforce the new words. Martha’s antics continue online at pbskids.org/martha — a website that builds on the series’ curriculum to bolster pre-schoolers’ oral vocabulary.

et your smart phone or alarm clock for 11 a.m., Wednesday morning October 3, to catch Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s exclusive broadcast of the National Symphony Orchestra’s Season Opening Ball Concert. Guest violinist and Deutsche Grammophon artist Anne-Sophie Mutter joins the NSO, led by Maestro Christoph Eschenbach, for a no-holds-barred performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto and Pablo de Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy. Recorded just days earlier on Sunday, September 30 by Classical WETA’s Charles Lawson, this season’s kick-off concert by the NSO also includes Richard Strauss’s Suite from Der Rosenkavalier and Beethoven’s Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus. As Maestro Eschenbach told Classical WETA producer Deb Lamberton, “For me, every night when I go onstage must be something special. I’m on fire, and so is the orchestra now!”

The Season Opening Ball Concert performances are infused with all the excitement a new concert season bestows. Classical WETA’s Nicole Lacroix hosts the broadcast, joined by Lamberton.

There are more great NSO performances on the way. Classical WETA’s broadcast partnership with the ensemble continues Wednesday night, November 7 at 9 p.m. with the first of nine NSO Showcase programs.

Offered the first Wednesday night of each month through July 3, 2013, NSO Showcase features the best of National Symphony Orchestra performances, recorded live in-concert by Classical WETA’s Charles Lawson at the Kennedy Center. Nicole Lacroix hosts each broadcast.

wo local concert series open October on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Monday night, 9 p.m. broadcast Front Row Washington: Dumbarton Concerts’ recital by the Amerigo Trio, featuring string trio music by Beethoven, Halvorsen and von Dohnányi on October 1, and Candlelight Concert Society of Maryland’s recital featuring a performance of Mendelssohn’s great Octet by the American and Ariel String Quartets on October 8.

Next, Front Row Washington presents two of the five finalists from this year’s American Pianists Association competition. On October 15, pianist Sara Daneshpour performs works by Haydn, Chopin and Rachmaninoff at the Downtown Piano Works Fine Artist Concert Series in Frederick, Maryland. The following Monday, October 22, pianist Clair Huangci is featured in recital at the National Gallery of Art, performing works by Minako Tokuyama, Chopin, Schumann and Tchaikovsky.

This month on Classical WETA’s Sunday night, 9 p.m. broadcast Choral Showcase, on October 7 we present Magnificat settings, explore a Requiem theme with Arnold Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, and feature Mozart’s Missa solemnis — anticipating the Beethoven Missa solemnis on the October 14 broadcast. On October 21, Choral Showcase features Mass settings with the Missa solemnis name by Hummel and Bruckner.
