omic drama Decline and Fall, a 2017 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s first published novel, stars Eva Longoria, David Suchet and Jack Whitehall in a satirical skewering of 1920s British society. Airing on the first three Thursdays of November at 8 p.m., the series presents the story of an inoffensive divinity student whose unfair expulsion from university and impoverishment sets off a Decline and Fall disastrous series of events no one could have foreseen as he meets a beautiful, rich widow. Also on Thursdays, the 9 p.m. drama Love, Lies and Records airs in double features, starring Ashley Jensen (Agatha Raisin) as working mother and registrar Kate Dickenson, who must juggle her personal life with the births, marriages and deaths she officially registers. After a big promotion to a superintendent position, Kate tries hard to hold her work, home life and relationship together but struggles mightily when a disgruntled colleague threatens to expose a secret from her past.

In other drama offerings this month, tune in Sundays for ongoing series The Durrells in Corfu (8 p.m.) and Poldark (9 p.m.), which continue on Masterpiece, and the Wilkie Collins adaptation The Woman in White (10 p.m.). On Saturdays at 8 p.m., Agatha Christie’s Poirot, starring David Suchet, features murder mysteries probed by the Belgian supersleuth.

Moderator Robert Costa — a Washington Post national political reporter — leads the discussion with a roundtable of the nation’s top reporters on the beat.

In the lead-up to the 2018 midterm elections, Washington Week will expand its coverage through a new weekly podcast. Starting in October, Costa interviews reporters from local public media and other regional news organizations about key congressional races and issues that will be on the ballot on November 6 in Ohio, Texas, Arizona and other key states. After the Robert Costa election, Costa will focus on the new balance of power in Congress and how it could affect policy in 2019 and the longer-term impact on Donald J. Trump’s presidency. n a WETA program spotlighting a dazzling evening of levity, luminaries, performances and accolades, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts celebrates comedian and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, bestowing upon her the institution’s prestigious annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. WETA partnered to capture the proceedings for nationwide broadcast for the 19th year of the award event on PBS. Julia Louis-Dreyfus: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize, taped in October in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, airs Monday, November 19 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD and on PBS stations around the country. The 90-minute special — a collaboration between WETA, production company Done + Dusted, and the Kennedy Center — features a star-studded cast of friends, admirers and collaborators paying tribute to the humor and accomplishments of the television icon. Participants include Stephen Colbert, Bryan Cranston, Tina Fey, Ilana Glazer, Tony Hale, Abbi Jacobson, Keegan-Michael Key, Lisa Kudrow, Kumail Nanjiani and Jerry Seinfeld.

Of Louis-Dreyfus’ remarkable career achievements, Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter said, “Like Mark Twain, Julia has enriched American culture with her iconic, unforgettable and outright hilarious brand of humor. Over four decades, her wildly original characters and her gift for physical comedy have left us in stitches.”

Louis-Dreyfus earned worldwide acclaim for her portrayal of Elaine Benes in the hit NBC series Seinfeld and as Christine Campbell in the CBS comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine. She currently stars in and

executive produces the HBO series Veep. Louis-Dreyfus has received 11 Emmy awards (six consecutively for Veep) with 24 nominations, a Golden Globe award, nine Screen Actors Guild awards (making her the most decorated actor in SAG awards history), three Television Critics Association awards, five American Comedy Awards, a Peabody Award, and the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy. She has broken the record for the most Emmys won by a single performer as well as the most consecutive wins for a single role (Veep). Her film credits include Enough Said, A Bug’s Life and Hannah and Her Sisters, among other projects.

Louis-Dreyfus first made her mark on television during a three-year stint (1982–1985) on Saturday Night Live, opposite the likes of Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest and Eddie Murphy. She studied theater at Northwestern University and was a member of Chicago’s famed Second City comedy troupe.

November Highlights on WETA TV 26/HD We’ll Meet Again, Series 2

e’ll Meet Again returns with a second season of six human stories of hope, courage and resilience, exploring some of history’s most dramatic events through the personal experiences of those who lived through them. Reported and produced by journalist Ann Curry (at left), the series tells the stories of ordinary people, caught up in the tides of history, who are seeking to be reunited with those who helped them survive transformational events. Featured among this season’s stories are two Vietnam veterans, one longing to reconnect with the helicopter pilot who rescued him from enemy fire, the other wanting to thank the doctor who saved his leg (November 13); a Holocaust survivor hoping to discover what happened to a fellow survivor he befriended in a displaced-persons camp (November 20); a woman looking for the best friend whose family shielded her during the great Alaskan earthquake of 1964; and a Cuban-American who escaped during the 1980 Mariel Boatlift and never forgot the brave skipper who piloted him to a new life in the United States.

Last B-24 & Thai Cave Rescue on NOVA

eventy-four years ago, an American B-24 Liberator bomber known as the Tulsamerican crashed into the Adriatic Sea while returning from a mission over Europe. Seven crew members survived and were rescued, but three men were never found. In the program Last B-24, airing November 7, NOVA joins the U.S. Department of Defense, the Croatian Navy and an elite team of underwater archaeologists and technical divers to excavate the wreckage of this WWII icon: the last B-24 ever built in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and paid for by the factory workers. Using science to unlock the mystery, the group embarks on a deep and dangerous expedition with the hope of finally bringing the missing airmen home. Then on November 14, Thai Cave Rescue spotlights the July 2018 rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach stranded deep in a flooded cave in Thailand, following the harrowing operation and discovering the ingenuity that made possible the effort by an international team of divers. Hear how rescuers explored every option — from pumping out water, to drilling a new exit, to ultimately cave-diving with the children through the treacherous, flooded passages.

Squirrels, Polar Bears & More on Nature

fter Nature wraps up the three-part miniseries Super Cats on November 7, the Wednesday-night series turns the spotlight on other creatures. On November 14, A Squirrel’s Guide to Success explores the extraordinary abilities of the enterprising rodents. Not just the critters feasting at your birdfeeder, the squirrel family includes flying squirrels, chipmunks, prairie dogs and more. The program examines the reasons for these animals’ success — and follows an orphan red squirrel. On November 21, Dogs in the Land of Lions follows the journey of a close-knit family of wild dogs in Zimbabwe to witness rarely seen behavior, from tender moments with newborn pups, to the thrills of hunting wildebeest, to close encounters with their greatest enemy, the lion. Then, on November 28, Snow Bears — narrated by Kate Winslet — spotlights newborn polar bear cubs as they leave their den for the first time and with their mother undertake a perilous 400-mile Arctic voyage to the sea to feed. In additional nature programming, NOVA: World’s Fastest Animal, spotlights falcons on November 21 at 9 p.m.

special concert program chronicles and celebrates singer-songwriter Neil Diamond’s return to the famed Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in August 2012. The performance marked the 40th anniversary of the pop star’s original multiplatinum-selling Hot August Night collection that was recorded at the very same venue in 1972. In the concert, Diamond’s onstage charisma and musical prowess is in full evidence, and the playlist features over 30 of his notable hits, including “Kentucky Woman,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Solitary Man,” “I’m a Believer” and “America.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member has sold more than 130 million albums worldwide and has been a presence on the charts for more than five decades with 38 Top-40 singles and 16 Top-10 albums. The program repeats Tuesday, November 27.

Paul Simon’s Concert in the Park en years after his reunion concert with Art Garfunkel in New York City’s Central Park, on August 15, 1991, Paul Simon brought his Born at The Right Time Tour to the same site for a free concert on the Great Lawn. One of the largest crowds ever assembled in Central Park gathered to hear a retrospective mix of songs from the 12-time Grammy Award-winner’s career, featuring favorites from Simon’s albums Graceland and The Rhythm of The Saints along with classics such as “The Sound of Silence,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” Cecilia,” “The Boxer” and “Still Crazy After All These Years.” Performing alongside Simon is a 17-piece band assembled from three countries and including South African and Brazilian musicians who had played with him on his solo work. The special repeats Friday, November 30.

n acclaimed series from distinguished Harvard scholar and WETA production partner Henry Louis Gates, Jr., recounts the full trajectory of African-American history, from the origins of slavery on the African continent through five centuries of remarkable historic events. Presented and written by Gates, the six-part production visits key U.S. historical sites and chronicles the evolution of the African-American people, as well as the multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives they developed. Interviewees include school integration pioneers Ruby Bridges (left, with Gates) and Charlayne Hunter-Gault; Congressman John Lewis; former Black Panther Kathleen Cleaver; civil rights activist Diane Nash; and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

ETA reprises a 2015 celebration of filmmaker and WETA production partner Ken Burns’ landmark 1990 documentary series The Civil War — a co-production of Florentine Films and WETA. The special program, created to mark the then-25th anniversary of the film, features footage from the original series to share the story of how the award-winning documentary came to be and how it has become a cultural icon of American storytelling. Illuminating the acclaimed history production, the program presents interviews with Burns, writer Geoffrey Ward, filmmaker Ric Burns, cinematographer Buddy Squires and others who participated in the project.

Ken Burns: The Civil War celebrates an extraordinary achievement in filmmaking that has withstood the test of time and remains as relevant now as it was 28 years ago.

The two are rivals for control of the local chapter of the Women’s Institute, a service organization. With war looming in 1939, the Great Paxford chapter faces its moment of truth. Will it close up shop, or will it reinvent itself to help the nation? Home Fires is based on Julie Summers’ book Jambusters.

three-part 2009 BBC film explores a year in the life of America’s great national park, one of the world’s last and most spectacular wildernesses and a global icon of natural beauty.

In the setting of the park’s breathtaking scenery, the programs spotlight how the lives and fortunes of Yellowstone’s animals are inexorably bound together. Created by the executive producer of the series Life, Yellowstone showcases the park’s grandeur as it follows animals’ struggle to survive over the course of three changing seasons in episodes titled Winter, Summer and Autumn. Created by the BBC Natural History Unit and Animal Planet, the programs feature dazzling wildlife cinematography and wide-angle landscape vistas.

No other body of water is as important to so many; the Ganges’ waters are vital to 450 million people for food and industry. But as India’s economy expands, the Ganges is under threat as never before. Beginning her journey high in the Himalayas at the river’s holy source, Perkins travels through the Gangetic Plain, the holy city of Varanasi, and on to the river’s vast delta on the Bay of Bengal. With humor and warmth, she explores the changing lives of the people of the Ganges.

uring the month of November, Classical WETA Opera House showcases two operas presented by Washington Concert Opera during its 2017-18 season. Each is a bel canto gem that fulfills Washington Concert Opera’s mission: showcase vocal virtuosity, from both renowned singers and rising stars in the operatic world, in seldom-performed operatic masterpieces.

First, Vincenzo Bellini’s La Straniera, a dramatization of historical events of the 12th century, captures the intrigue of a mysterious stranger, la straniera, whose presence creates secrets, seclusion and surprise. Bellini’s orchestral colors, including a generous dose of harp, evoke a sense of mystery that Maestro Antony Walker, artistic Director of Washington Concert Opera, characterizes as “atmospheric.” The performance features soprano Amanda Woodbury, tenors Gerard Schneider and Jonas Hacker, and baritone Javier Arrey, and airs Saturday, November 3 on Classical WETA. The following weekend, Saturday, November 10, we present Maria di Rohan by Gaetano Donizetti, a deeply passionate and intricate love triangle set in 17th-century Paris. This work represents Donizetti’s mature period and his evolution as an operatic composer; influenced by contemporaries Verdi and Mercadante, Donizetti employs a lean, streamlined musical structure to effectively propel the narrative. It is recognized as one of his finest. Sisters Marina Costa-Jackson and Ginger Costa-Jackson, baritone Lester Lynch and tenor Norman Reinhardt are showcased in this performance.

Join us for Washington Concert Opera presentations this month. Both performances are conducted by Maestro Walker and broadcast with associated commentary at 1 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM. NSO Showcase Marks WWI Armistice Centennial Wednesday, November 7 at 9 p.m.

“A

brilliant musician in times of peace, and an equally brilliant soldier in times of stress.” So wrote George Butterworth’s commanding officer in his letter of condolence when the young musician’s promising career was cut short by a sniper’s bullet in 1916. The composer of A Shropshire Lad was only 31 years old. This month’s November 7 broadcast of NSO Showcase honors several composers who served music and their country with brilliance and bravery.

Christoph Eschenbach, Matthew Halls and Sir Mark Elder conduct the National Symphony Orchestra in these musical tributes to the spirit of the Great War. Butterworth’s great friend and fellow folk-song collector, Ralph Vaughan Williams, enlisted as a medical orderly at the age of 42. He described his third symphony, “A Pastoral Symphony,” as “really wartime music — a great deal of it incubated when I used to go up night after night with the ambulance wagon and we went up a steep hill and there was a wonderful Corot-like landscape in the sunset — it’s not really lambkins frisking at all as most people take for granted.” Soprano Madison Leonard is featured soloist in the Pastoral Symphony.

Meanwhile, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ erstwhile teacher, Maurice Ravel, also signed up as an ambulance driver — a frightful occupation that nearly destroyed the sensitive composer. We’ll hear the memorial Ravel composed for fallen friends, Le Tombeau de Couperin, and La valse, an ironic post-war reaction to the frivolity of the Viennese waltz.

The program also includes Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe Suite No.2.

Classical for Washington Musicians from Marlboro on Front Row Washington Mondays at 9 p.m.

his month on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Monday-night program Front Row Washington, we listen to performances from the Phillips Collection, Candlelight Concert Society, and The Meyer Concert series at the Freer|Sackler Museum of Asian Art. Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki turns 85 this month; he is one of the most influential composers to emerge from post-World War II eastern Europe in the 20th century. Musicians from Marlboro III will be performing his String Trio on our November 12 program, which comes from a performance at the Freer|Sackler Museum. Also on the concert is the String Quintet No. 1 in F Major by Johannes Brahms. Brahms was so confident of this work that he wrote to friends and colleagues, “[this is] one of my finest works” Musicians from and “You have never before heard such a beautiful work from me.” While the two Marlboro III: (from top pieces on this concert come from very different composers, they share a similar left, down) Molly Carr, theme of dance-like motifs. This performance is inspiring, colorful and superbly Robin Scott, Tessa Lark, Marcy Rosen executed. Now in its 54th season, the Musicians from Marlboro touring program and Rebecca Albers was created as an extension of Vermont’s Marlboro Music festival, featuring some of today’s most ambitious musicians at the start of their careers. This month, Front Row Washington also features violinist Rachel Barton Pine on November 5, performing music by William Grant Still and Mohammed Fairouz. We hear pianist Yeol Eum Son on November 19 and cellist Victor Julien-Laferriere on November 26. Join me for Front Row Washington, Monday evenings at 9 p.m.

ovember marks the 100th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice, when the guns on the Western Front went silent on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month,” ending the First World War. We honor this centennial on Choral Showcase with Music of Remembrance, beginning November 4 with a work by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů.

Written for outdoor performance, much like religious services held for soldiers at the front, the Field Mass is a plea for peace and a tribute to Czech soldiers who fought for the French. We follow with Maurice Duruflé’s gently consoling Requiem. On November 11, Remembrance Day itself, we offer Edward Elgar’s The Spirit of England, a requiem for the dead composed in 1915, when both sides were experiencing horrific casualties. We also hear a work from between the wars: Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Dona Nobis Pacem, a timeless ode to peace written in 1936 when another world conflict seemed inevitable.

Alexander Kastalsky’s reaction to the war’s devastation is the 1917 requiem, “Memory Eternal to the Fallen Heroes.” He wrote two versions: one for orchestra and chorus for the concert hall (which was performed in October at Washington National Cathedral), and the other for a cappella choir for the Orthodox Church. We’ll hear that version on November 18, along with Te Deum by Walter Braunfels, a former German soldier whose shattering experience during the war led to his conversion to Catholicism and the creation of this choral symphony. Our month of remembrance concludes on November 25 with Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, who will lead this work with the NSO at the Kennedy Center November 29-December 1.
