n November, the annual WETA co-production The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize presents the proceedings as popular comedian and former late-night television host David Letterman receives the organization’s award for American humor. The lively broadcast, taped in October and airing nationwide on PBS stations this month, features a lineup of familiar celebrities paying homage to the influential entertainer.

We also premiere a new edition of our engaging local TV 26 series Neighborhood Eats, which visits popular dining establishments that flavor highlighted areas of Greater Washington. The production is complemented by our ongoing local restaurant review series Check, Please! DC, which made its debut last month and rolls out four new episodes in November. Exploring the vibrant offerings of our community, these programs are created exclusively for local viewers in the national capital area.

In other WETA Television programming this month, we continue to air new Season Four episodes of fascinating ancestry series and WETA co-production Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. — and reprise Skip’s series Africa’s Great Civilizations, another collaboration with WETA. In November, we also wrap up our encore presentation of The Vietnam War. n every city, locals have favorite eating establishments that lend a distinctive flavor to the community they represent. The ongoing Neighborhood Eats series — an exclusive WETA TV 26 production created for viewers in Greater Washington — highlights the special dining experiences and stories that capture the essence of the national capital area. This month, a new, second episode of Neighborhood Eats explores more local hotspots, celebrating the delicious charms of Greater Washington’s vibrant dining scene.

The half-hour November program spotlights eateries in the District’s Adams Morgan/Mount Pleasant and Southwest neighborhoods, and samples neighborhood offerings of Del Ray in Alexandria, Virginia, and of Silver Spring, Maryland, also meeting the chefs and restauranteurs behind these local businesses.

Surveyed in Adams Morgan/Mount Pleasant are American barbecue classics and sandwiches with a signature twist; a homemade ice pop business; classic Filipino cuisine and American comfort food; and Sakuramen Ramen Bar, which infuses each dish with flavors and tastes reflecting the owners’ Korean upbringing. In Southwest, the program stops in at a waterfront spot that feels a world apart from the rest of the city; and at Station 4, a favorite stop for theatergoers attending nearby Arena Stage.

In Silver Spring, the program visits an establishment creating tasty pupusas, the national dish of El Salvador; a craft brewery and beer garden; and Urban Butcher, where meats are butchered and aged in-house with the utmost care.

athaniel Parker portrays aristocratic Scotland Yard investigator DI Thomas Lynley and Sharon Small is his acerbic working-class sidekick DI Barbara Havers in BBC murder mysteries based on Elizabeth George’s bestselling books. The four 90-minute episodes — which sustain an engaging dynamic and appealing tension between two characters from very different sides of the fence — air the first three Thursdays this month, with a double feature on November 16. To set the scene for the Series 4 cases, the episodes pick up from the shooting of Havers in Series 3.

How will the trauma affect Havers’ ability to cope with the demands of her work?

And how will Lynley contend with estrangement from his wife Helen following the death of their unborn child?

Beyond a Year in Space

follow-up to the March 2016 PBS/Time program A Year in Space chronicles astronaut Scott Kelly’s return and adjustment to life on Earth after spending 12 months on the International Space Station (ISS), the longest space mission in American history. Exploring the effects of long-term space travel on the human body, the film also introduces the next generation of astronauts currently training to leave Earth’s orbit and travel into deep space. Beyond a Year in Space picks up the story with Scott Kelly’s last day in space and return to Earth after his record-breaking stay in space with Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. The program — which also spotlights biologist Jessica Meir and former Navy pilot Victor Glover and offers a behindthe-scenes look at how these two astronauts are training — airs November 15 at 9 p.m., preceded by an 8 p.m. encore broadcast of A Year in Space and followed by a reprised airing of NOVA: First Man on the Moon at 10 p.m.

new documentary film directed by Ric Burns (maker of Debt of Honor: Disabled Veterans in American History) and funded and produced by Lois Pope explores the history of the department of Veterans Affairs — from the troubled beginnings of the Veterans Bureau of the 1920s, to the modern VA system. The film chronicles, in depth and in often wrenching detail, the workings of this crucial but at times beleaguered American institution: exploring what it does and how it functions, its vast size and critical importance, its history and provenance — how and why it came into existence, how and why it has changed over time, its travails in recent generations and how it may be reformed going forward. Interviewees include Robert McDonald, former Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs; Dr. David Shulkin, Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs; some of the country’s leading scholars on VA history; policymakers; and veterans in the system.

he John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presented its annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in mid-October, celebrating iconic comedian and renowned late-night television host David Letterman. For the 18th year of the award event on PBS, WETA captured the proceedings for nationwide broadcast. The 90-minute television special David Letterman: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize was taped in the Concert Hall at the Kennedy Center and airs Monday, November 20 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD and PBS stations around the country.

The program — a production of WETA; CoMedia; Mark Krantz Productions; Cappy Productions and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts — features a star-studded cast of Letterman’s friends and colleagues in the entertainment and comedy business paying tribute to his humor and accomplishments. Onstage performers and guests include Sen. Al Franken, Jimmy Kimmel, Norm Macdonald, Steve Martin, John Mulaney, Bill Murray, Amy Schumer, Paul Shaffer, Martin Short, Eddie Vedder and Jimmie Walker.

“Raise your hand if, like me, you shifted your bedtime because you didn’t want to miss a moment of Dave on television lest you not be part of the conversation with friends and co-workers the next day,” Kennedy Center President Deborah Rutter said. “His 30-year late-night presence — filled with pranks, antics, and his quintessential deadpan humor — remains a fixture of the American experience.”

Letterman, the 20th recipient of the Mark Twain Prize, has been hailed as one of the most innovative and influential broadcasters in the history of television. In his three decades on late-night television, he hosted 6,028 episodes of Late Night (NBC) and The Late Show (CBS), surpassing his mentor, Johnny Carson, for the longestrunning late-night broadcaster in American history. As a writer, producer and performer, Letterman is one of the

most-nominated people in Emmy Award history, with 52 nominations, resulting in 10 wins. He is also a PeabodyAward winner and a Kennedy Center Honoree.

Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Letterman’s first network break came in 1978 as a writer on the CBS variety series Mary, starring Mary Tyler Moore.

In November of that year, he made the first of his 22 appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He also guest-hosted Tonight numerous times. In 1980, Letterman began hosting a morning comedy-variety program, The David Letterman Show, which ran briefly on NBC. His ground-breaking show Late Night with David Letterman premiered in February 1982. Throughout its 11 years, Late Night profoundly influenced late-night television, earning five Emmys and 35 Emmy nominations.

On August 30, 1993, The Late Show with David Letterman made its debut on CBS. In its 22 years at CBS, Late Show became known as one of the most inventive David Letterman, 2016 and imaginative comedy programs in television.

From his roots in comedy, Letterman also became renowned as a masterful interviewer, sharing the stage with the U.S. Presidents, Cabinet officials, Medal of Honor recipients, and virtually every presidential candidate for more than 20 years. Letterman departed Late Show in May 2015 — and grew his now-famous beard. He resides in New York with his wife Regina, and son Harry.

ETA reprises Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s epic history documentary series Africa’s Great Civilizations. The WETA co-production, which premiered in February of this year, is hosted, executive produced and written by Gates, whose other recent projects with WETA include the film Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise and the ongoing ancestry series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Season 4 of which continues this month. In Africa’s Great Civilizations, airing in three back-to-back episodes on November 26, the Harvard scholar travels the length and breadth of Africa to chronicle the continent’s history from an African perspective, exploring the complexity, grandeur and diversity of Africa’s history from the dawn of humankind to the colonial era. In the film, Gates presents a vision of Africa’s pivotal place in world history, exploring how Africa influenced the world and how Africa was itself influenced. The series is produced by Inkwell Films, McGee Media, Kunhardt Films and WETA, in association with Nutopia Productions.

As Series III continues to unfold on WETA TV 26 this month, WETA UK presents Series I of the popular re-make of one of Masterpiece’s earliest hit series, based on the novels of Winston Graham. Aiden Turner stars as the populist, swashbuckling hero Captain Ross Poldark, who returns to England after the American Revolutionary War to find that his father is dead, his lands in beautiful Cornwall are ruined and his true love is about to marry his first cousin. Eleanor Tomlinson co-stars as the servant Demelza; Heida Reed portrays Elizabeth Chenoweth, the woman who gave Poldark her ring as a love token before he left for America.

Afterlife stars Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually) as Robert Bridge, a psychology lecturer grieving the loss of a young son in a car accident. Bridge meets reluctant psychic Alison Mundy — portrayed by Lesley Sharp (Vera Drake). She appears to be able to communicate with spirits and, tormented, is driven to seek to resolve relationships torn apart by death. Robert studies her, intending to write about her work and the people she helps, when their association is thrown into crisis as Alison reveals she is in touch with his dead son.

Having realized his dream of becoming proprietor and cook at Le Château, Blackstock’s perfectionism pushes the restaurant to the financial brink and plunges his personal and professional life into chaos.

Each episode focuses on one of the famous castles of the British royal family: Windsor in London, Hollyrood and Inverary in Scotland, Hillsborough in Northern Ireland, and Caernarfon in Wales. At every stop, Keith gains behind-the-scenes access and witnesses the daily life of palace staff. She also encounters unique household positions including a royal herb strewer, a harpist, and a falconer and finds out what it takes to keep a castle running smoothly.

ront Row Washington is delighted to welcome Washington Performing Arts to our family of presenters. Fifty years ago, Patrick Hayes founded WPA to bring the finest musicians to Washington, D.C. In this 50th anniversary season, the organization continues Mr. Hayes’ legacy by bringing us a tremendous range of artists. You could say the city is their stage — they present performances in venues ranging from concert halls and clubs to public parks.

We kick off the month with a November 6 broadcast of a concert from WPA’s Virtuoso Series recorded at the University of the District of Columbia’s Theater of the Arts. The JCT Trio — pronounced “Junction” — is a collaboration of three remarkable soloists: Avery Fisher Career Grant winners Stefan Jackiw, Jay Campbell and Conrad Tao. As the name implies, the collective result of this assembled virtuosity and sensitivity is even greater than the sum of its highly impressive parts. They perform Mozart’s Divertimento in B-flat Major, K.254, Charles Ives’ Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano and Dvorˇák’s Piano Trio in F Minor, Op. 65.

The following Monday, November 13, brings us a recital from Washington Performing Arts’ Piano Masters Series.

Russian pianist and Avery Fisher Career Grant winner Kirill Gerstein performs Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 in F minor and features what has become a signature work in his repertoire: Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes.

Then we have a very special treat for you following Thanksgiving weekend. On Monday, November 27, NSO Concertmaster Nurit Bar-Josef takes on a solo role as she joins pianist Audrey Andrist in a rich and varied program from the Washington Conservatory of Music. Ms. Bar-Josef and her 1773 Guadagnini violin bring to gorgeous life Beethoven’s “Spring” Sonata, Prokofiev’s dark 1st Sonata — with its violin passages the composer described as “wind passing through a graveyard,” and Robert Schumann’s vibrant 2nd Violin Sonata.

We’re so lucky here in the Washington area to enjoy such a vast array of wonderful local performances. We bring you some of the very best each Monday night at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA’s program Front Row Washington.

ast November, for his official debut as NSO music director designate, Gianandrea Noseda told the Kennedy Center audience that the music he had programmed — Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet — was anything but star-crossed. He, Gianandrea Noseda Shakespeare and Prokofiev, all share the same birthday — definitely a good omen for the performance ahead!

Classical WETA was there to record the concert, and now that Maestro Noseda has begun his tenure as NSO music director, we’re celebrating by bringing you the complete program to commence a new season of our Listen throughout monthly broadcast NSO Showcase.

November for a series It was indeed an auspicious event, honoring both the legacy of former of interviews and National Symphony Orchestra music director Mstislav Rostropovich and the profiles of Maestro 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. For Maestro Noseda, it was also a personal milestone as Romeo and Juliet was one of the first pieces he conducted.

Noseda as he conducts In the intervening decades, his point of view has evolved. “At the beginning,” he his first subscription admitted to The Washington Post Express, “I [emphasized] the big drama, the big concerts as Music passion between the two lovers. Now I’m 52, so I feel the other elements — the Director of the National fight between the two families and also the setting in Verona.”

Gianandrea Noseda was born not too far away from Verona, in Milan. He Symphony Orchestra. thus has an innate appreciation for the Italian character of the story, layered with a deep appreciation of Russian music thanks to his 10-year stint as principal guest conductor in St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre. Prokofiev has a very Russian gift for colorful orchestration, and uses all sorts of interesting instruments in Romeo and Juliet, including tenor saxophone, viola d’amore, mandolins, maracas and organ. “This piece,” Noseda again told the Post Express, “makes inventive use of all the instruments.

There are moments when Prokofiev uses the strings in a very percussive way and, vice versa, he uses the brass in a very melodic way... That’s why this piece still sounds so fresh and honest even today. It challenges the perception of how an orchestra should sound.”
