arch in the nation’s capital is a very special time of year, a month to appreciate the extraordinary beauty of springtime in the metropolis at the heart of our region. With the thaw and milder weather heralding a veritable explosion of natural color, the Washington area truly comes alive, lush with new growth as flowers emerge, the trees leaf anew, and the city hosts the country’s greatest celebration of the season, the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival.

This month, we at WETA are proud to premiere a new locally focused television production that celebrates our hometown, casting a spotlight on the area’s incredible sights and rich history. Our film Discovering Washington: Through the Lens premieres March 8, showcasing extraordinary locations around Greater Washington from unique vantage points — visiting the historic monuments, renowned edifices, beautiful landscapes and iconic cityscapes all around us that we perhaps take for granted in our busy lives. We are also delighted to reprise a WETA program that captures the famed spring blossoms at their finest. The Washington Cherry Blossoms: A Gift of Friendship relates the story of the gorgeous Tidal Basin trees and captures their splendor. These programs air as part of our spring membership campaign, a time for WETA’s own “new growth” to support the important work we do on behalf of the community we serve. I hope you have a chance to tune in to these films and the many other special offerings on WETA TV 26/HD this month.

T

he hardworking midwives and nurse-nuns of Nonnatus House, serving East London’s impoverished Poplar neighborhood, return this month in a new season of the drama that spotlights women’s health services provided to the community’s most vulnerable and in need.

Based on the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth — who worked with the Community of St. John the Divine, an Anglican religious order, at a convent in the East End — the production opened in 1957 in Season 1 and has moved steadily into the early 1960s, following the winds of social change and marking historical events as it dramatizes the midwives’ work. The series explores women’s lives and family dynamics, tackling social, cultural and economic issues through its plotlines. In the new season, the midwives have a new colleague: English actor Leonie Elliott joins the cast as Lucille Anderson, the first West Indian midwife to be featured as a series regular. Also in the ensemble cast (left) are Jennifer Kirby as Valerie, Helen George as Trixie, and Charlotte Ritchie as Barbara. In Season 7, in addition to the many routine challenges of her work, Lucille must contend with racism and prejudice, and the team comes up against leprosy, tokophobia, stroke, Huntington’s chorea and more.

he national capital area is a picturesque metropolis steeped in history and boasting extraordinary edifices, monuments, vistas, waterways and natural beauty that draw visitors from far and wide and form the backdrop to daily life for local residents. This month, WETA TV 26/HD premieres a new original WETA production, Discovering Washington: Through the Lens, that celebrates remarkable sights around Greater Washington, showcasing local landmarks by land, water and, notably, air — and exploring their stories. From the producers of the recent documentary series Discovering Alexandria, this latest film joins the WETA portfolio of local productions created exclusively for television viewers in the Washington area.

As we learn in the film, the tallest structure in the city is the Washington Monument (above) — at 555 feet, 5 inches, the tallest building in the world at the time of its completion in 1884. So, to get even greater perspective, WETA needed to rise to the challenge. WETA Discovering Washington producer Christine Wolski had to overcome motion sickness and a fear of flying as she took to the skies via helicopter to capture magnificent local scenery from a unique vantage point.

“The city and its surrounding areas offer a distinctive landscape that has hometown familiarity to locals and continues to fascinate visitors,” said Wolski. “At WETA, we are delighted to showcase local history, and this new film spotlights our area from a rarely seen point of view: the sky. We’re proud to bring this special perspective to our community — it’s gratifying to be able to share great footage in the film.”

The narration to the film is voiced by Classical WETA 90.9 FM on-air host Nicole Lacroix, examining the history of sites in Washington and surrounding areas. The 90-minute program visits the region’s wonders — from the iconic monuments of the National Mall and the stately splendors of the White House and Mount Vernon, to the majesty of the Potomac River, the breathtaking natural beauty of Great Falls Park, and much more.

Which major landmark was saved from disrepair by a ladies’ association?

Which popular monuments are modeled on icons of Athens and Rome?

Which government office building has more than 17 miles of corridors? What famous structure resides on Jenkins Hill? Which Washington home (not the zoo!) has boasted three alligators, a hippo and a one-legged rooster among its famous denizens? You’ll learn the answers to these and much more in Discovering Washington: Through the Lens, which premieres March 8 and repeats throughout the month.

ome of the most beautiful songs in Jewish musical history are prayers sung by cantors during Shabbat services. In a new music program, three young cantors, all rising stars in the world’s Jewish music scene, are brought together in Amsterdam’s revered 17th-century Portuguese Synagogue for a concert of Jewish sacred and secular music arranged for orchestra and choir. The New York Cantors are comprised of Brooklyn-born Yaakov (Yanky) Lemmer, cantor of the Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York City; Azi Schwartz, a native of Israel and cantor at New York’s Park Avenue Synagogue; and, also of Israel, Netanel Hershtik, cantor at The Hampton Synagogue, Westhampton Beach, New York. The program includes favorite secular songs evoking memories of Jewish tradition and rich musical culture. Maestro Jules van Hessen and his orchestra and male choir support the cantors. The concert reprises Cantors, A Faith in Song, a groundbreaking 2003 PBS special also recorded in the same Amsterdam synagogue.

retha Franklin and Lou Rawls (left) host and headline the reprised 2003 My Music special Rhythm, Love & Soul from impresario TJ Lubinsky, presenting the greatest romantic soul hits from the 1960s and 1970s. The special concert features 20 other legends of R&B, Motown and Soul, reuniting to perform their biggest love songs of the era. Performers include Gloria Gaynor (“I Will Survive”), Peaches & Herb (“Reunited”), The Spinners, Thelma Houston (“Don’t Leave Me This Way”) and many other acts. n Dublin 14 years ago, an idea was born to create a musical show featuring classically and traditionally trained Irish female musicians.

Since their debut, global musical sensation Celtic Woman has been bringing the spirit and sounds of Ireland to a worldwide audience. Now a program presents their “Homecoming” tour, featuring angelic voices and violin celebrating the Emerald Isle’s centuries-old heritage in a special Dublin concert. Songs include “Mo Ghile Mear (My Gallant Star)”; “My Heart Will Go On”; “Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears”; “Danny Boy”; “Fields of Gold”; “Ave Maria”; “You Raise Me Up”; “Ard Uí Chuain/ Sadhbh Ní Bhruinneallaigh”; “Time to Say Goodbye”; and more. new star-studded special presents a tribute to Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, the beloved children’s television series that premiered 50 years ago and became an enduring American cultural icon. The nearly 900 episodes created

by Fred Rogers encompass topics that resonate to this day. Actor Michael Keaton, who worked as a stagehand and made appearances on the series in the 1970s, hosts the celebration. Cast members Joe Negri (Handyman Negri) and David Newell (Mr. McFeely), and Joanne Rogers, Fred’s widow, share personal stories, and the program features interviews with an array of celebrities who have been influenced and inspired by Fred Rogers. Judd Apatow, Joyce DiDonato, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Kratt, John Lithgow, Yo-Yo Ma and son Nicholas Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Sarah Silverman, Esperanza Spalding and Caroll Spinney reveal their favorite Mister Rogers memories.

Also featured are performances from the series by Tony Bennett, Hillary Hahn, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Perlman and others; and highlighted are favorite segments, such as a visit with Koko the Gorilla, Big Bird’s appearance in the “Neighborhood of Make-Believe” as well as trips to the Crayola Factory and the Radio Flyer Wagon Company. The non-profit Fred Rogers Company continues its multimedia work today via awardwinning children’s series such as Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Peg + Cat, and Odd Squad, all presented on WETA Kids.

ETA’s presentations of Agatha Christie’s Marple episodes continue in late March with another double feature of mysteries: Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? and At Bertram’s Hotel, with celebrated actresses Julia McKenzie (Cranford) and Geraldine McEwan (The Magdalene Sisters) taking on the role of world-famous crime writer Agatha Christie’s shrewd and inquisitive Miss Jane Marple. The sleuth’s age and sweet countenance mask an astonishingly perceptive nature and a razorsharp intuition for solving crimes. Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?, starring McKenzie (right, with Mark Williams of Father Brown), features Marple visiting a friend and ending up investigating a key clue uttered by a dying man. new documentary from Oscar-nominated and Emmy, Peabody and DuPont award-winning film producer Helen Whitney (Frontline: Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero; Frontline: The Mormons; and the WETA co-production Forgiveness: A Time to Love and a Time to Hate) presents an intimate exploration of human mortality. Actor Sharon Stone narrates. The two-hour film features nine men and women of uncommon eloquence and intelligence grappling with the universal questions posed by mortality. How do we endure when we know death is near? With defiance, as poet Dylan Thomas exhorts us, “To rage, rage against the dying of the light”? Or with gentle acceptance?

Clenched fists? With mordant humor? Or, more commonly, with denial? Into the Night presents candid portraits of individuals for whom death is no longer a far-off abstraction. Each of them — a world-renowned actor, an astrophysicist and NPR commentator, a young mortician and bestselling author, a religious historian, a cryonicist and futurist, a former radical Islamist, a Baptist minister, an award-winning British novelist and dedicated environmentalist, and a Mayo clinic surgeon — has been shocked into mortality. ne of the most important, yet least-known activists of our time, Dolores Huerta was an equal partner in founding the first farm workers union with César Chávez. Tirelessly leading the fight for racial and labor justice, Huerta evolved into one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century — and the Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient continues the fight to this day, at 87. A new film

by Peter Bratt, Dolores on Independent Lens, chronicles Huerta’s life from her childhood in California to her early years with the United Farm Workers, from her work with the headline-making grape boycott launched in 1965 to her role in the feminist movement of the ’70s to her continued work as a fearless activist. With unprecedented access to this intensely private mother of 11, the production presents a portrait of a passionate champion of the oppressed and an indomitable woman willing to accept the personal sacrifices involved in committing one’s life to social change. Dolores features interviews with Gloria Steinem, Luis Valdez, Hillary Clinton, Angela Davis, Huerta’s children and others. An additional short film, Delano Manongs, spotlights Filipinos in the farm labor movement.

shley Jenson stars as London PR whiz Agatha Raisin, who seemingly has it all — with money no object, an executive riverside apartment and a stellar career — but whose professional achievements have come at an emotional cost. Dreaming of a more peaceful existence away from it all, she opts for early retirement in the picturesque idyll of the Cotswolds, only to find herself immersed in a variety of mysteries. In the pilot episode (March 10), she settles in the tranquil village of Carsely and attempts to curry favor with the locals, entering a local quichemaking competition. Her gambit backfires and Raisin must turn amateur investigator to clear her name of a crime. Outspoken and opinionated, she shakes up the village, unearthing hidden secrets as she goes. The series is based on novels by M.C. Beaton.

The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Series V

I

n Series V of the popular BBC mysteries, aristocratic DI Thomas Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) and his working-class colleague DI Barbara Havers (Sharon Small) face tensions personal and professional while solving murder-mysteries. The action begins with Lynley facing a disciplinary hearing, leaving Havers to deal with the case of a drowned woman. Things aren’t as simple as they seem however, and after Lynley lends a hand to reveal a new angle to the case, he is reinstated to his post. Lynley and Havers are also catapulted into the bizarre world of internet vice when they investigate the mysterious and brutal death of a young female barrister; and Lynley rekindles an important personal relationship. he popular, long-running contemporary crime series that presents a blend of mystery, science and detection starts anew on March 12 from the very first episode. Amanda Burton stars as forensic pathologist Dr. Sam Ryan, who has an all-embracing, passionate notion of justice that quite often does not accord with the police’s objective of getting a conviction.

This can lead to trouble in both her personal and professional lives, but, to Sam, each of the dead deserves nothing but the truth. Since its first broadcast in the U.K. in 1996, the drama has produced 20 series. It was created by Nigel McCrery, a former homicide detective who later co-created the series New Tricks as well. This opening series tackles child murder, ritual killing, a murder in the police cells and an arranged marriage that troubles Ryan.

ETA UK reprises Capital, a three-part series set in South London, adapted from the novel by John Lancaster. The storyline follows a fictional neighborhood as it is transformed by soaring property prices. Once an ordinary residential area, the gentrifying Pepys Road community is home to denizens ranging from those who were born there to the newly wealthy who have only recently moved in. When the diverse households of the street begin receiving anonymous postcards that say, “We want what you have,” they first think it is merely a marketing campaign. But matters escalate and the ensuing ripple effect touches every corner of the community, transforming everyone’s lives. The stellar cast includes Toby Jones (right, Sherlock), Gemma Jones (Harry Potter, Bridget Jones’s Baby) and Rachael Stirling (right, The Bletchley Circle).

British Television at Its Best Agatha Christie’s Poirot hroughout March, WETA UK continues its presentation of feature-filmlength episodes of Agatha Christie’s Poirot, starring David Suchet in his signature role as the Belgian sleuth. This month’s cases are Cards on the Table (March 7), in which Poirot must investigate a murder that unfolds at an unusual dinner party featuring sleuths and suspected murderers as guests; After the Funeral (March 14), which features a killing after family members gather for the reading of a wealthy relative’s will; Taken at the Flood (March 21), in which the death of a man changes the economic circumstance of his extended family and results in intrigue and murder; and Five Little Pigs (March 28), in which Poirot, at the behest of a young woman, bring a fresh perspective to a notorious 14-year-old case in which her mother was hanged for murder. ETA UK’s presentation of Sharpe continues this month with Series II and III, featuring the episodes Sharpe’s Company (March 1), Sharpe’s Enemy (March 8), Sharpe’s Honor (March 15), Sharpe’s Gold (March 22) and Sharpe’s Battle (March 29). Proving himself capable, Sharpe and the riflemen under his command are given challenging missions. The films, produced from 1993 to 2008, are based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling novels; they chart the fictional protagonist’s progress in the British Army and actions in British-occupied Portugal and then Spain, France and, ultimately, India. This month, in Sharpe’s Company, the soldier comes up against the next in a series of villains, venomous former adversary Sgt. Hakeswill, portrayed by Pete Postlethwaite.

three-part 2009 BBC film explores a year in the life of America’s great national park, one of the world’s last and most spectacular wildernesses and a global icon of natural beauty. In the setting of the park’s breathtaking scenery, the programs spotlight how the lives and fortunes of Yellowstone’s animals are inexorably bound together. Created by the executive producer of the series Life (Sunday afternoons on WETA UK), Yellowstone showcases the park’s grandeur as it follows animals’ struggle to survive over the course of three changing seasons in episodes titled Winter, Summer and Autumn. Created by the BBC Natural History Unit and Animal Planet, the programs feature dazzling wildlife cinematography and dramatic wide-angle landscape vistas. Peter Firth (MI-5) narrates.

aestro Gianandrea Noseda opened his first season as music director of the National Symphony Orchestra to great acclaim, and this month, Classical WETA’s broadcast NSO Showcase will highlight his first three subscription concerts as we look forward to Mr. Noseda’s return to the Kennedy Center podium this month.

We’ll begin our program with Beethoven’s revolutionary Eroica Symphony from Maestro Noseda’s first subscription concert — an event which inspired this encomium in the website WashingtonClassicalReview.com: “If this truly excellent concert is a harbinger of things to come, the Noseda era is going to be a thrill ride for listeners.”

We’ll also present Manuel de Falla’s Three Cornered Hat Suite No.2 from the score commissioned by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. The story of the ballet concerns a young miller and his beautiful wife who are pestered by a lecherous official — he of the three-cornered hat. Picasso designed the sets and costumes, and the ballet was quite a hit at its 1919 premiere. The NSO performed it last November at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, then took the show down the road to Washington’s newest hotspot, The Anthem at The Wharf for a free (and fun) community concert.

Rachmaninov’s last work, the Symphonic Dances, will close March’s NSO Showcase program. The Washington Post wrote “At the end of his first run of subscription concerts as music director, Noseda seems to have put a spring in the orchestra’s step. You could feel the freshness in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, as an involved audience responded to yet another week of captivating programming. ‘I don’t think this music was written to be danced,’ [Noseda] said in his remarks to the audience, ‘but we will make our dream, our soul dance along with it.’ A hard invitation to resist when the piece is played like that.”

As we look forward to Maestro Noseda’s upcoming concerts (beginning March 8 with John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary,) this month’s NSO Showcase should indeed put a spring in our step.

Classical for Washington Celebrating Bach Month on Front Row Washington Mondays at 9 p.m.

hat makes for a musical prodigy these days? How about a Radio France broadcast debut at age 9, entering the Paris Conservatory at age 11, winning New York’s Young Concert Artists International audition at age 15, and earning Grammophone Magazine’s “Recording of the Month” at 16? We’re talking about French pianist Lise de la Salle, who has performed in recital and with major orchestras around the globe, including her debut last April with the National Symphony Orchestra. Of that performance The Washington Post wrote, “Lise de la Salle is that rarity among musicians, a child prodigy who has continued to develop into a full-fledged artist combining virtuosity and significant communicative skill.”

You can hear Lise de la Salle on Front Row Washington’s broadcast Monday night, March 5 at 9 p.m., featuring her recent recital at the Bender JCC of Greater Washington recorded by Classical WETA. Ms. de la Salle performs Bach’s Italian Concerto in F major, Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 3, and selections from Claude Debussy’s Préludes. In an appropriate nod to Bach Month on Classical WETA, she Lisa de la Salle concludes her program with Ferrucio Busoni’s keyboard transcription of Bach’s famous Chaconne in D minor.

Like Ms. de la Salle, Chinese-born guitarist Meng Su showed her talents at an early age, winning top prize at several competitions, including the Tokyo International Classical WETA 90.9 FM and all-vocal classic Guitar Competition. In 2006, she came to America to music station VivaLaVoce celebrate the music of study with Manuel Barrueco at Peabody Conservatory, Johann Sebastian Bach throughout March. Among where she earned her Master’s degree and graduate presentations are VivaLaVoce’s annual “CantataFest,” performance diplomas. Her November 2017 recital featuring daily broadcasts of Bach cantatas. by Academy Award-winning composer John Williams — his first work for classical guitar, written for Christopher Parkening and the Parkening International Guitar Competition, whose 2015 top prize winner was Meng Su! It’s hard to believe that the first-ever recording of Johann Sebastian Bach’s six suites for solo cello was made in 1936 by Pablo Casals, who by that time had been playing them for several decades. Ever since, performing and recording Bach’s six suites has represented a sort of Everest for cellists around the world.

We celebrate Bach Month and the master’s 333rd birth anniversary on Front Row Washington by presenting all six solo cello suites over two consecutive Monday nights, March 19 and 26, featuring the celebrated French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras in recital at the Phillips Collection. Regarding this performance, Washington Classical Review wrote that although Queyras’ recording of the suites for Harmonia Mundi was made a decade ago, “his interpretation of these pieces continues to ripen in flavor and complexity.” We’ll feature Mr. Queyras’ performance of Suites 1-3 on our March 19 broadcast and Suites 4-6 on March 26.
