hroughout March, WETA presents special programming as part of our spring television membership campaign, which is a critical source of funding that helps make possible WETA’s vital program offerings and services to our community. An impressive diversity of performance programming, in addition to specials spotlighting healthful living, make for engaging television in March.

This month also heralds more than 20 state primaries and caucuses, including those on Super Tuesday, an important milestone on the Election 2012 campaign trail. On the pages of this magazine, we spotlight WETA Television’s news and public affairs offerings, which will help keep viewers informed with trusted news reports and incisive news analysis throughout this election year. Among these important programs, we are especially proud of longtime WETA productions Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal and PBS NewsHour, which serve audiences nationwide.

Downton Abbey: Behind the Drama

o behind the scenes of the wildly popular Masterpiece Classic series Downton Abbey, which follows the lives and loves of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them in a country house in Edwardian England.

With a third season in the works, beginning production this spring (with Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning actor Shirley MacLaine joining the cast, playing Martha Levinson, the mother of Lady Grantham), this onehour Masterpiece special reviews the action-packed storylines of the first two seasons of Downton Abbey. Relive pivotal moments from the series and get insight into the characters from writer Julian Fellowes and the actors — such as Dan Stevens and Hugh Bonneville (r) — who bring Downton Abbey to life.

Washington Cherry Blossoms: A Gift of Friendship

ashington’s cherry blossoms grace the Tidal Basin each year and are a focal point for the nation as the country welcomes spring. This special WETA production spotlights the exquisite beauty of the blossoming cherry trees — which were a gift of friendship from Japan in 1912 — exploring the history of the trees and what is now one of the nation’s largest springtime celebrations. The program also takes a nostalgic look at how the blossoms have been enjoyed in Greater Washington over the years.

Il Volo Takes Flight

airs Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m. and throughout the month

n May 2009, an Italian teen vocal group — Piero Barone (from Agrigento, Sicily), Ignazio Boschetto (born in Bologna) and Ginaluca Ginoble (from Abruzzo) — appeared on a popular Italian talent show and dazzled viewers, winning the competition. Naming themselves “Il Volo” (flight), they released their first album worldwide to acclaim in 2011. Now the trio performs in a special concert at the Detroit Opera House, singing classical and traditional Italian songs, including “O Sole Mio,” “Il Mondo” and “E Piu Ti Penso,” that showcase their vocal talent and interpretive gifts for music.

n his newest special, taped on October 22, 2011, best-selling author and teacher Dr. Wayne Dyer presents his “Five Wishes Fulfilled Foundations” — five steps to living from your “highest self,” and thereby attracting your deepest desires. Using his trademark humor, combined with concepts drawn from American “new thought” philosophers of the 20th century, Dyer outlines a program for mastering the tools necessary for living a profoundly extraordinary and fulfilled life. Viewers will learn how to employ Dyer’s ideas to create new thought patterns and defeat unproductive and recurring habits.

My Music: Big Band Vocalists

new music special spotlights great vocalists of the Big Band era of the 1940s — and the orchestras and dance bands with which they toured. Among the artists performing memorable World War II-era hits (such as “You’ll Never Know,” “Blues in the Night” and “It’s Magic”) in the program’s rare, vintage footage are Louis Armstrong, Perry Como, Doris Day (far right), Peggy Lee (at right) with The Benny Goodman Orchestra, Dinah Shore, and Jo Stafford & The Pied Pipers with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.

In celebration of the show’s 25th anniversary, Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh presented the production in the Victorian splendor of London’s Royal Albert Hall. The performance, featuring complete cast and orchestra, stars Ramin Karimloo as the Phantom, Sierra Boggess as his protégé Christine Daaé, and Hadley Fraser as the Phantom’s romantic competitor Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny.

mong the most fundamental responsibilities of public broadcasting to television viewers throughout the United States is to provide the American people a trustworthy source of steady, balanced news reporting and thoughtful, incisive news analysis. In an election year, this service takes on even greater importance, as voters seek reliable information to help them make educated choices at the polls.

The WETA mission, at its core, is to promote lifelong learning and foster an informed citizenry; and creating illuminating news and public affairs productions is one of WETA’s greatest strengths. Throughout its five decades of public service, the station has demonstrated an abiding commitment to serious journalism. While public affairs offerings on WETA TV 26 are plentiful, two highly respected programs embody the station’s — and PBS’s — commitment to integrity, depth and civil discourse in public affairs broadcasts.

Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal Each Friday, WETA produces the acclaimed news analysis program Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal, which features top Washington reporters exploring the major news stories of the week with the program’s moderator and managing editor, Gwen Ifill. One of the nation’s most respected journalists, Ifill has led the

program’s incisive roundtable discussion since 1999. On her watch, the series has partnered with Washington-based news organization National Journal and garnered a coveted Peabody Award for coverage of the 2008 elections. The program unveiled an expanded website in 2010, featuring blogs by Ifill and “Webcast Extra” video offering additional program content. Now the longest-running primetime news and public affairs program on television, Washington Week has been produced by WETA for 45 years. Premiering on February 23, 1967 as Washington Week in Review, the production two years later became the first locally produced program to air nationwide on PBS and for two decades was hosted by esteemed journalist Paul Duke.

PBS NewsHour Each weeknight in the WETA television studio, the station and MacNeil/Lehrer Productions produce PBS ­NewsHour, the acclaimed news report that is public television’s marquee news series and the hub of PBS news offerings.

WETA has partnered with The NewsHour for more than 35 years to create the broadcast, which has received numerous Emmy and Peabody awards and every other significant award for quality television and outstanding journalism.

Well known for its commitment to long-form, substantive journalism, the program has merged broadcast and digital media news coverage, and features a team of stellar journalists: Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff, Jeffrey Brown, Ray Suarez, Margaret Warner and Hari Sreenivasan — and political analysts Mark Shields and David Brooks, who discuss politics with Jim Lehrer. Born out of WETA-produced PBS news coverage (anchored by Robert MacNeil and Lehrer) of the 1973–74 Congressional Watergate hearings, The MacNeil/Lehrer Report premiered in 1976. In partnership

Public Affairs with WETA, in 1983 MacNeil and Lehrer transformed the program into The NewsHour, the nation’s first hour-long nightly news broadcast. Three decades hence, the program remains one of WETA’s most important productions.

Over the past four decades, WETA has also produced other significant news and public affairs programming, from local news roundtable Metro Week (1979–1992) to Anatomy of a Pandemic (2009), spotlighting swine flu. WETA productions have included Summer of Judgment: The Watergate Hearings (1983) and a sequel film on the Watergate impeachment hearings; an array of programming in each election year; and, after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, more than 60 hours of primetime programming for PBS. WETA public affairs productions that followed included BioTerror (2001) and Avoiding Armageddon (2003). Flashpoints USA with Bryant Gumbel and Gwen Ifill (2004) featured issue-oriented specials, as did Sesno Reports (2004–2005), featuring journalist Frank Sesno. WETA also produced the weekly series Tucker Carlson: Unfiltered (2004–2005). Paramount among recent WETA public affairs initiatives was the award-winning multimedia project America at a Crossroads (2007–2009), which featured 20 documentaries on themes surrounding the post-9/11 world.

Additional WETA Broadcasts Airing since 1983 on WETA TV 26, the iconic PBS public affairs series Frontline presents powerful documentary films featuring in-depth, investigative journalism.
