he holidays have arrived, a time for family, festivities and the spirit of giving, and, on WETA broadcasts, a time for music. In December, we wrap up the year with the inspiring sounds of the season and an array of performances by popular artists and ensembles. Classical WETA 90.9 FM presents festive music and holiday specials that include a Hanukkah celebration, the traditional broadcast of A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols; Handel’s Messiah and other choral music; The Nutcracker; carols; and much more.

On WETA Television, in addition to holiday programming, WETA TV 26 and WETA HD present a lineup of music performances as part of the station’s year-end membership campaign.

From a celebration of the musical Les Misérables, to new concerts featuring renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli, the Celtic Woman vocal-violin ensemble, pop superstar Paul Simon and other artists, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Also on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD, this month brings a reprised airing of the entire Masterpiece miniseries Downton Abbey on Christmas Day in preparation for a sequel series in January and February. Downton Abbey fans, the show will go on!

A third series has been announced, to be filmed next year.

ust in time for holiday feasts and New Year’s resolutions, WETA Television presents lifestyle specials that offer advice on healthy eating and weight control. The new program The Mayo Clinic Diet — based on the first and only diet book published by one of the nation’s preeminent healthcare and medical research institutions — is founded upon research conducted under rigorous and exacting standards by some of the most respected physicians, nutritionists and other medical experts in the world. The Mayo Clinic has identified five critical habits to help take weight off and five habits to keep it from coming back. The results have been tested on thousands of patients. Dr. Donald Hensrud (at left) hosts the program, which brings together experts, services, and tools from several areas of the Clinic to help people achieve a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

opular Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli performed a free concert on September 15 for tens of thousands of fans who braved stormy weather to enjoy the music on Central Park’s Great Lawn. Bocelli presented a varied repertoire that included well-known arias, fan favorites, and some new surprises. Joining him on stage, alongside the New York Philharmonic conducted by music director Alan Gilbert, were Céline Dion, Tony Bennett, Chris Botti and David Foster. Sopranos Ana María Martínez and Pretty Yende, violinist Nicola Benedetti, bass baritone Bryn Terfel and flutist Andrea Griminelli also took part, along with the Westminster Symphonic Choir. Journalist Paula Zahn hosts. The program is part of the PBS Fall Arts Festival.

nternationally renowned for alluring stage productions and songs of heartwarming inspiration, the Celtic Woman vocal/violin ensemble — vocalists Chloë Agnew, Lisa Kelly, Lisa Lambe and Celtic violinist Máiréad Nesbitt — performs classic Irish songs, timeless pop anthems, and inspirational songs with the signature Celtic Woman twist. The new performance, the first Celtic Woman concert to be filmed in the United States, was taped at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Joining Celtic Woman are a 20-piece orchestra, seven-piece Celtic Woman Band, 16-piece Atlanta Bagpipe Band, the 10-member Aontas Choir with its lush vocal harmonies, and a 30-member children’s choir.

egendary chef Jacques Pépin, whose career has spanned six decades, has collected and updated his favorite recipes for the series Essential Pépin, which showcases the chef’s masterful technique and his ease and flair with a wide variety of delicious dishes. Renowned as a chef’s chef and a respected teacher, in each ingredient-driven episode, the 75-yearold culinary legend provides step-by-step instruction for amazing culinary creations and demonstrates his impeccable technique, from chopping an onion or peeling a softly boiled egg to breaking down a leg of lamb. In the programs, Pépin welcomes his daughter Claudine, granddaughter Shorey and lifelong friends and colleagues to cook with him. His recipes range from classical Escoffier Quenelles to Poached Trout in Vegetable Broth to Chicken with Tarragon Butter, from basic French Fries to Brioche. Topping the bill are collaborations with the region’s preeminent ensemble, the National Symphony Orchestra. On the air, Classical WETA has presented the NSO’s Season Opening Ball Concert and other special performances, and the station also features recorded NSO concerts on the monthly Classical WETA broadcast NSO Showcase.

The familiar voices of hosts David Ginder, Marilyn Cooley, John Chester, Nicole Lacroix, Chip Brienza, Judy Gruber, Deborah Lamberton and Jean Inaba are a daily presence for hundreds of thousands of listeners around the area who make Classical WETA a part of their lives. These announcers share their wealth of knowledge, exploring musical culture through programming that includes theme weekends and monthlong celebrations of popular composers.

Classical WETA 90.9 FM celebrates the works of Ludwig van Beethoven throughout December, and among the broadcasts is a recital of the composer’s piano sonatas on Front Row Washington, the weekly Classical WETA Monday night program spotlighting classical music performances around Greater Washington by top artists.

On Monday, December 12 at 9 p.m., Front Row Washington presents pianist Shai Wosner performing Beethoven sonatas No. 4 in E-flat Major, Op. 7; No. 6 in F Major, Op. 10 No. 2; and No. 18 in E-flat Major, Op. 31 No. 3 at the Downtown Piano Works in Frederick, Maryland. A recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, Mr. Wosner has performed with orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world, and is known for his Shai Wosner exceptional artistry, virtuosity, and creative insight.
