erving our community, WETA is an important cultural pillar of Greater Washington, and we also play an important role producing broadcasts for a national PBS audience to enjoy. Making available to all Americans the unique cultural resources of the nation’s capital is among our important responsibilities as a public broadcasting station, and this month we have some very exciting special programming to offer.

On July 4, WETA presents the 30th annual live broadcast of A Capitol Fourth — a WETA co-production that features the popular Independence Day concert and fireworks display, respectively, from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall. July also heralds the premiere of the next concert production in WETA’s long-running series, In Performance at the White House. The television event Paul McCartney: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song In Performance at the White House airs July 28, celebrating the artistry of the music icon, who is joined in performance by a stellar lineup of top artists.

Classical WETA 90.9 FM also features special music performances in July as we broadcast orchestral concerts and opera recorded live by WETA staff at this month’s Castleton Festival in the Virginia countryside. These performances air on Classical WETA’s broadcasts Front Row Washington and Classical WETA Opera House and will be streamed online at classicalweta.org. Tune in — and enjoy what WETA has to offer. WETA Productions and Staff Win Emmy Awards

ocal Emmy Awards were announced June 5 by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the WETA TV 26 production Washington in the ’60s won two Emmys: the historical documentary category (Simon Epstein, producer and Jacqueline Todt, executive producer) and the audio post-production category (Antonio Pacheco, WETA audio engineer).

WETA’s Doug Johncox was nominated for his editing work on the film. The NATAS-NCCB also bestowed two special awards: WETA Studio Supervisor and Technician Glynda Bates was inducted into the Silver Circle for her decades of service in the broadcasting industry; and WETA’s long-running public affairs production Washington Week with Gwen Ifill and National Journal received the prestigious Board of Governors Award, given in recognition of outstanding achievement and unique accomplishment.

In the Spotlight A Capitol Fourth

erforming in tribute to America’s 234th birthday, country music superstar Reba McEntire (above), Darius Rucker (of Hootie and the Blowfish), John Schneider and pianist Lang Lang headline the 30th annual Independence Day concert extravaganza, which is broadcast live to a nationwide audience from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Actor Jimmy Smits is host. The program, a co-production of Capital Concerts and WETA, features the concert followed by the traditional spectacular fireworks display over the National Mall.

This year’s production includes a special tribute to late Capitol Fourth maestro Erich Kunzel — taking up the baton this year is Jack Everly who, with the National Symphony Orchestra, caps off the concert with an audience favorite — the traditional rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. W

hat happens when a gruff doctor flees big-city life to work as a general practitioner in a sleepy, picturesque English coastal town? The cultures clash and the sparks fly! The comedy-drama series Doc Martin comes to WETA Television this month, mixing elements of classic British sitcoms with sharp medical drama and a quirky cast of characters. Martin Clune (Jeeves and Wooster) stars, portraying brash, brilliant Dr. Martin Ellingham, who was once a renowned London surgeon — until a sudden phobia left him paralyzed at the sight of blood. Leaving his old life behind, Martin heads to his childhood town of Portwenn in Cornwall, replacing its beloved general practitioner, and, with his tactlessness and social ineptness, finds new ways to cause mayhem in each episode.

New Poirot Adaptations

Sundays, July 11, 18 & 25 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

avid Suchet returns to Masterpiece Mystery! to reprise his signature role as Agatha Christie’s suave supersleuth Hercule Poirot, starring in three new episodes this month that include his most celebrated case, Murder on the Orient Express on July 11. Leading into this broadcast, on Wednesday, July 7 at 8 p.m., Suchet takes a special (homicide-free) journey on the modern-day Orient Express in a Masterpiece travelogue that rides the train across Europe and back in time. In other Poirot episodes this month, Poirot teams with an eccentric crime novelist to investigate a murder in The Third Girl on July 18; and in Appointment with Death, on July 25, the Belgian detective visits an archaeological site in Syria, where a family’s dark past is the real subject of excavation. For more mysteries this month, tune in on Thursday nights to Sherlock Holmes at 8 p.m. and Inspector Lewis cases at 9 p.m.

The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song In Performance at the White House

“T

here’s a song I’ve been itching to sing at the White House,” joked music superstar Sir Paul McCartney as he tucked into his ballad “Michelle,” crooning “I love you, I love, I loooove you” to the delight of a White House audience that included President Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama, enjoying a loving celebration of the music icon and his songs.

McCartney performed an array of his hits alongside a stellar lineup of top artists in the intimate East Room of the White House on June 2, and this month, WETA presents the concert program Paul McCartney: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song In Performance at the White House. The 90-minute television special, produced by WETA in association with the Library of Congress, Mark Krantz Productions and CoMedia, spotlights the warm celebration of McCartney’s music and features interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. It airs on PBS stations nationwide on July 28, and performances can also be found at pbs.org/whitehouse.

President and Mrs. Obama hosted the evening concert in honor of McCartney’s receipt of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which the President bestowed during the event. The concert, acclaimed in the press nationwide, featured performances by the former Beatle and a host of enthusiastic musical admirers, including Stevie Wonder, who sang “We Can Work It Out” and a duet with McCartney on “Ebony and Ivory.” Elvis Costello, who hails from Sir Paul’s home town of Liverpool, England, offered a heartfelt rendition of “Penny Lane” complete with a piccolo trumpet solo

Known to music fans the world over, Paul McCartney wrote and co-authored The Beatles’ greatest songs during the 1960s, changing the course of popular music with legendary albums featuring a host of songs that have become part of the musical and cultural consciousness of generations worldwide. After the Beatles era, McCartney has continued to be an astonishingly successful, prolific artist, creating rock ‘n’ roll and pop music over the last 40 years with the band Wings and as a solo artist; he is also an accomplished, awardwinning classical composer. McCartney continues to tour internationally, performing sold-out concerts to millions of people around the globe.

WETA has spotlighted the awarding of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song since its inception, bringing to the nation the annual celebration of a composer or performer’s lifetime contributions to popular music. Previous recipients include Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder. WETA has produced the series In Performance at the White House since 1978, partnering with each administration to bring to a nationwide audience the diverse arts performances hosted by the president. The July 28 program is the fourth In Performance at the White House production during President Obama’s administration and the 44th program in WETA’s series.

Corporate funding for the program is provided by U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management; Pepsi-Cola; and EastOne Group.

n the CGI-animated Animalia television series, two 11-year-old children, Zoe and Alex, experience adventures as they are swept from their local library into an extraordinary fantasy world in which a collection of talking animals have created their own “civilization.” Adapted from the art and characters of “Animalia,” author Graeme Base’s popular children’s book, the educational series is based upon a language arts and literacy curriculum: Zoe and Alex, along with their new best friends G’Bubu (a teenaged gorilla) and Iggy (a feisty, heroic iguana), must aid the endangered civilization of Animalia by helping the animals communicate and restore harmony to the land. Each episode centers on the skillful use of language — reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking, and investigating. The series also carries also positive social messages and highlights key character traits such as cooperation, persistence and creativity.

hroughout July on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s broadcasts Classical WETA Opera House and Front Row Washington, Classical WETA will present five opera and orchestra performances from this year’s Castleton Festival (July 2–25) at Castleton Farms — conductor Lorin Maazel’s 550-acre property located at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains in Rappahannock County, Virginia.

Classical WETA will record the festival’s July 2 opening night performance of all three one-act operas in Puccini’s Il Trittico (Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi), conducted by the festival’s artistic director, Lorin Maazel, Lorin Maazel to be broadcast on Classical WETA Opera House a week later on Saturday, July 10 at 1 p.m. Festival performances of the Benjamin Britten chamber operas The Turn of the Screw and The Beggar’s Opera will also be broadcast on Classical WETA on Classical WETA Opera House on Saturday, July 17 and Saturday, July 24 respectively at 1 p.m.

In addition to the three opera broadcasts, two of the festival’s orchestral concerts will also be broadcast in July as part of Classical WETA’s Monday local concert broadcast Front Row Washington. A concert of Italian works taking place at the Castleton Festival on Saturday, July 3 will be broadcast on Front Row Washington on Monday, July 5 at 9 p.m. and includes performances of works by Verdi, Puccini, Geminiani, Rossini and Respighi. The festival’s concert of American works on Friday, July 16 will be recorded for broadcast on Front Row Washington on Monday, July 19 at 9 p.m. and includes performances of compositions by Adams, Copland, Grofé, Bernstein, Maazel, Barber and Gershwin.

The concerts, featuring the Castleton Festival Orchestra, comprised of young professional musicians and advanced music conservatory students, will be conducted by Maestro Maazel and this year’s Castleton Conducting Fellows. In addition to the Italian and American concerts being broadcast in July, an all-Beethoven Festival finale concert on Sunday, July 25 will be recorded by Classical WETA for broadcast in 2011.

The Castleton Festival grew out of the Castleton Residency program for young artists run by The Châteauville Foundation, founded by Lorin Maazel and his wife Dietlinde Turban-Maazel in 1997. The Castleton Festival brings young artists — including singers, conductors, instrumentalists, directors, costume designers and lighting designers — to live on the Maazel’s property for six weeks to work with professional mentors and prepare the performances of the operas and concerts. Castleton Festival performances are held in the intimate 140-seat custom-built Theatre House and a 400-seat Festival Tent.
