WETA Launches National Youth M W

ETA, the foremost producer of news and public affairs content for public television, plays a vital role in keeping viewers nationwide informed about our country’s electoral and political process. WETA production PBS NewsHour is the centerpiece of Election 2020 programming and presents comprehensive special coverage of the proceedings at the Democratic and Republican national conventions. I encourage you to tune in to these illuminating events and to watch Washington Week for additional perspective and insight into breaking developments. WETA pursues many avenues of service, fostering civic engagement. We are very excited to launch Well Beings, a major national multi-platform health campaign. WETA is uniquely positioned to convene expert partners, reach wide audiences, and create content on urgent public issues. The current mental health crisis in America is critically important. Our new Well Beings Youth Mental Health Project will start a national conversation on youth mental health topics and provide robust resources to the public. To support this ambitious project, we have developed an incredible array of wonderful partners and funders — see the back cover of this magazine for a sense of the breadth of our remarkable collaboration. The Youth Mental Health Project debuts with a town hall event, hosted by WETA and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. I invite you to watch the event at the website WellBeings.org, where we spotlight the components of this far-reaching project. Thank you for your ongoing support, which makes our public service possible.

Sharon Percy Rockefeller, President & CEO, WETA

WETA is launching Well Beings,

a nationwide campaign from public media that addresses critical health needs in America through broadcast content, original digital content, and local events. The multi-year campaign created by WETA debuts with the Youth Mental Health Project, crafted to emphasize the mental health and voices of youth and raise awareness, address stigma and encourage compassion. This timely effort to engage the American public in a conversation about mental health takes on additional significance as the COVID-19 pandemic impacts America’s youth. The project brings together a deeply engaged, diverse coalition of distinguished partners and funders (see the back cover of this magazine) from across the country to create awareness and resources for better health for all.

Town Hall Event at WellBeings.org The Well Beings hour-long virtual event, available at project website WellBeings.org, showcases powerful stories, special performances, exclusive campaign content and more. The centerpiece of the meeting is a panel discussion titled “Youth Mental Health & Society,” moderated by John Moe, creator and host of the podcast The Hilarious World of Depression from the American Public Media mental health initiative Call to Mind. An impressive roster of actors, musicians, and leaders in mental health participates in the town hall,

National Tour The WETA campaign includes a 24-city nationwide Well Beings Tour with panel discussions and resource fairs sharing volunteer opportunities and information from local community organizations; first stops are Atlanta, Georgia; Lincoln, Nebraska; and Anchorage, Alaska. Working with American Public Media’s Call to Mind, the tour is fostering new conversations about mental health through local events — live or virtual, based on local public health conditions — that feature moderated public discussions on mental health topics.

Documentary Content WETA partner Ken Burns is executive-producing a major new public television documentary, tentatively titled Hiding in Plain Sight: Our Mental Health Crisis. The film, slated for premiere in Spring 2022, explores how young people are addressing their mental health needs and examines the impact of mental health stigma and stress on today’s youth. A WETA digital documentary, Brave High, a character-driven verité film premiering in 2021, also explores themes of youth mental health, substance abuse and mental illness stigma as high school students share their stories. A multi-part digital series tentatively titled Out of the Dark, slated to premiere in 2020, shares the stories of people whose lives have been touched and changed by mental health challenges, to help destigmatize mental health conditions.

seventh season of the popular prequel to the beloved Inspector Morse series features Shaun Evans (The Take, The Last Weekend, Silk) returning to his signature role as cerebral and (mostly) solitary Detective Sergeant Endeavour Morse. In Season 7, Endeavour and his colleagues enter a new decade and era of change. Opening on New Year’s Eve 1969, normal order has been resumed and the team is reunited at Castle Gate CID. However, the events of the past year have left their mark: old friendships will be challenged and new relationships will blossom. Amidst the dawn of women’s liberation, social progression and scientific growth, the 1970s begin for Oxford’s finest with the discovery of a body at the canal towpath on New Year’s Day. With the only clue in the investigation a witness who heard whistling on the night of the crime, the team has its work cut out to uncover the culprit. Alongside Evans, the three new episodes, Oracle (August 9), Raga (August 16), and Zenana (August 23) — written by Lewis creator and Inspector Morse writer Russell Lewis — also star stage and screen actor Roger Allam as Morse mentor DI Fred Thursday, Anton Lesser as CS Reginald Endeavour, Series 4-6 Bright, Sean Rigby as DS Jim Strange, James Bradshaw as Dr. Max DeBryn, Sara Vickers as Joan are available Thursday, Abigail Thaw as Dorothea Frazil and Caroline O’Neill as Win Thursday. Not making for catch-up streaming a return this season is Morse’s impressive Season 6 mustache, left in the ’60s as time marches on WETA Passport! on in Endeavour’s new season and new decade. documentary hosted, produced and written by Harvard scholar and WETA film partner Henry Louis Gates, Jr. chronicles 50 years of the African American experience since the death of civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. The production of Inkwell Films, McGee Media, Kunhardt Films and WETA, in association with Ark Media, explores the arc of American history since 1965, charting Black Americans’ social and economic progress, and asking hard questions about formidable challenges and obstacles that remain. Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise, airing Friday, August 28 at 9 p.m., continues a conversation about race in America that has been featured in Gates’ previous acclaimed films — including his Peabody Award-winning historical documentary The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross, airing in its entirety on Sunday, August 9, 2:30-9 p.m. and repeating Saturday, August 15. Frontline: From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians Sunday, August 16, 3:30-9 p.m. on WETA PBS

ETA reprises an award-winning 1998 Frontline film that tells the story of the rise of Christianity. The documentary special, From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians, explores the life and death of Jesus of Nazareth and spotlights the men and women whose belief, conviction and martyrdom created the religion. Drawing upon historical evidence, the series challenges familiar assumptions and conventional notions about the origins of Christianity. Archaeological finds have yielded new understandings of Jesus’ class and social status, and fresh interpretations have transformed earlier ideas about the identity of the early Christians and their communities.

n Saturday “American History Night” programming in August D-Day landings, June 6, 1944 and September, WETA reprises The War, an acclaimed seven-part 2007 documentary series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that tells the story of the Second World War from an American perspective. The film, a co-production of Florentine Films and WETA, follows the fortunes of men and women, on the home front and on the battlefront, who became caught up in one of the greatest cataclysms in human history, and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives. The War honors and celebrates the bravery, endurance and sacrifice of Americans who lived through the conflagration. Six years in the making, the epic 15-hour film relates the story of the war both in the United States and around the globe, focusing on the lives and experiences of Americans from four geographically distributed towns: Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and tiny farm community Luverne, Minnesota. These communities stand in for any town in the United States that went through the war’s four devastating years. Individuals from each community take viewers through personal and often harrowing journeys into war, through stories painting vivid portraits of how the war dramatically altered their lives and those of their neighbors, as well as the country they helped to save for generations to come. The film delves into dozens of battles, including Guadalcanal and Tarawa, Peleliu and Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa; and, on the other side of the world, Anzio and Monte Cassino, Omaha Beach and St. Lo, the Hürtgen Forest and the Ardennes. Among the many people featured is Mobile resident Katherine Phillips, relating her worries for her brother Sid, who describes his experiences in the horrific island campaigns of the Pacific War. We hear the astonishing testimony of fighter pilot Quentin Aanenson of Luverne, Dwain Luce of Mobile, Joseph Vaghi of Waterbury and others who endured terrible combat in Europe. Tom Hanks reads the words of Al McIntosh, the editor of the Rock County Star-Herald in Luverne, whose weekly columns eloquently explained the war to his community. Josh Lucas is the voice of Marine Pvt. Eugene Sledge — whose memoir contains what are considered to be some of the greatest descriptions of the war ever written. Keith David narrates the film.

ollowing the airing of the film Clinton in July, WETA PBS features another of the acclaimed films of the American Experience series “The Presidents” — the two-part, four-hour film Reagan. The biographical documentary spotlights the president who saw America as “a shining city on a hill,” examining Reagan’s life through the testimony of family — including Nancy Reagan and three of his children — along with friends, historians, biographers and other witnesses to Reagan’s private life and public career. Reagan was America’s most ideological president in his rhetoric yet pragmatic in his actions. He believed in balanced budgets but never submitted one; hated nuclear weapons but built them by the thousands; and preached family values but presided over a dysfunctional family. His vision of America divided the nation, yet no matter what people thought of him politically, Reagan always won them over personally. Part One of the film follows Reagan from his youth in the American heartland to the triumph of his conservative “revolution” in 1981. Part Two focuses on Reagan’s ideological battle with the Soviet Union and his resolve to end the Cold War.

Major funding for American Experience provided by Liberty Mutual Insurance, Consumer Cellular and by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Additional funding provided by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, The Documentary Investment Group, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and public television viewers.

The programs’ eponymous protagonists are a 9-year-old girl and a young yellow monster — best friends and babysitters who take care of a wide variety of creatures when their regular guardians need aid. As the two care for small monsters throughout their community, Monsterdale, the pre-school series brings young viewers along on relatable adventures and features playful learning, humor, heart, and musical fun. Esme, voiced by Mille Davis (Ms. O in the WETA PBS Kids series Odd Squad), has a skill for inventing activities with the help of the MonsterCase, a suitcase full of fun and games that turns into a moto-scooter when needed. WETA UK Highlights WETA UK Transitioning to HD!

O

n August 4, WETA UK will transition to a high-definition (HD) format, offering viewers a clearer picture and a higher-quality viewing experience! The transition is occurring because WETA UK programming is increasingly produced in, or reformatted to, an HD standard. While this transition will be seamless for the vast majority of viewers, some WETA UK viewers may need to take action to continue to enjoy the programming they love. Those who have HD cable boxes or who watch WETA over the air (OTA) are not affected and do not need to take any action at all.  Viewers who use a standard-definition (SD) cable box with a digital TV will need to contact their cable company to upgrade to an HD box OR purchase/install an HD antenna (basic models are under $25) to watch WETA UK over the air.  Viewers who have a standard-definition (SD) cable box with an analog TV will need to upgrade to a digital TV and an HD box from their service provider OR upgrade to a digital TV and purchase an HD antenna.  Those who use an analog TV with a digital converter box will not need to take any action, but their 4:3 screen aspect ratio will lose some picture quality; a digital TV with an antenna may improve their viewing experience. Find a video on how to install an HD antenna at weta.org/antenna. If you have difficulties receiving WETA UK after August 4 and cannot resolve the issue, contact WETA Audiences Services at 703-998-2724.

Foyle’s War

Fridays at 10 p.m. starting August 28 on WETA UK

ETA UK has acquired all eight seasons of popular mystery series Foyle’s War, the popular 28-episode drama created by Midsomer Murders screenwriter and author Anthony Horowitz. Michael Kitchen (Reckless, Oliver Twist) (right, center) stars as DCI Christopher Foyle, the dogged police detective who fights his own battles on the home front in England while World War II rages. The quietly enigmatic policeman would rather serve his country in the armed forces, but his superiors deem him indispensable for combating anarchy along England’s south coast, facing invasion by the German army during the early years of the war. Uncertainty, espionage, bombs, internment and murder are the facts of life for Foyle and those around him. The mysteries co-star Honeysuckle Weeks as Foyle’s young driver, Samantha “Sam” Stewart, who is eager to apply her amateur sleuthing skills to Foyle’s complex cases. Anthony Howell portrays Foyle’s assistant, Detective Sergeant Paul Milner, grievously wounded in action in Norway.

Wander the cosmopolitan streets of London, roam the 1,000-year-old campuses of Oxford and Cambridge, tour world-famous museums like the Tate Modern and the National Railway Museum — or visit the romantic wilds of the Scottish Highlands and take in breathtaking vistas of the Jurassic coast, and much more. The tour is a feast of historical, cultural and scenic pleasures. Emory University Professor Patrick Allitt’s 36 lectures, laden with spectacular visuals, are presented in double features.

ETA World original series America ReFramed this month presents documentary films Gentlemen of Vision (August 4), following a year in the life of step team coach and counselor Marlon Wharton and his class of young Black men as he strives to rewrite future prospects for his students; Charlie vs. Goliath (August 18), which chronicles the grassroots political campaign for a Wyoming U.S. Senate seat by former Catholic priest Charlie Hardy, 75, with little money or political experience; and Agents of Change Through the Repellent Fence (August 25), which follows the creation of a two-mile-long ephemeral art installation by Native American artists that features floating balloons north and south of the border to represent a metaphorical “stitching” together of the United States and Mexico. Agents of Change (August 11) spotlights a pivotal moment when the United States arrived at the intersection of the Civil Rights, Black Power and Anti-Vietnam War movements. The film examines the racial conditions on college campuses across the U.S., focusing on two seminal protests: San Francisco State in 1968 and Cornell University in 1969. At San Francisco State, students and their supporters — including faculty and the increasingly influential Black Panther Party — launched the longest student strike in U.S. history. Student activists demonstrated and faced police assaults and massive arrests unleashed by then-governor Ronald Reagan. Struggling for themselves and the generations of students to come, Black, Latino and Asian student groups worked together in solidarity. Their efforts birthed the first College of Ethnic Studies in the nation and ignited similar actions across the country.

he hour-long program, DW The Day, features global English-language news reports and information from German public international broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) — a German counterpart to other countries’ international news programs such as BBC World News or France 24, which also air on WETA World. The program presents background on, and analysis of, the top news stories of the previous 24 hours from around Europe and the world. Also on WETA World from DW, the half-hour 5 p.m. weeknight broadcast DW News presents reports, interviews and analysis — from correspondents on the ground and experts in the studio — on politics, business, sports and culture, placing the news into context. DW combines expertise on Germany and Europe with a special interest in Africa and Asia while keeping track of stories from the rest of the world.

Friday, August 21, 7-10 p.m. on WETA World

mong the many natural history and culture documentary offerings on WETA World in August is three-part series Kingdoms of the Sky, made in conjunction with the BBC, spotlighting the extraordinary wildlife and remarkable people who live and thrive in the most iconic mountain ranges of the world. The programs explore, respectively, the Andes, Himalayas and Rockies. In the Andes, the world’s longest mountain range, pumas hunt guanaco, frogs hide in remote cloud forests and the descendants of the Incas build bridges of grass. The Himalaya program (right) explores the highest mountain range on earth, where snub-nosed monkeys live in frozen forests, Tibetan monks perform ancient rituals, and snow leopards prowl the mountainsides. In the Rockies program, cougar, wolverine, wolf and grizzly are in the spotlight in the great mountain range that stretches 3,000 miles.

lassical WETA 90.9 FM’s Sunday evening program, Choral Showcase, provides a respite for you this month with music for reflection and remembrance. For remembrance, we present two different works that offer comfort and consolation. Johannes Brahms, grieving for his mother and perhaps his late friend and mentor, Robert Schumann, composed a Requiem mass not so much for the dead, but for the living. On August 2, we’ll hear Ein Deutsches Requiem, “A German Requiem,” with Daniel Harding conducting the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir. And on August 16, we feature a work Antonin Dvořák composed following the death of not one, but three of his children: the Stabat Mater, in a recording from 2000 featuring The Washington Chorus under the direction of Robert Shafer. There’s music for gentle reflection, too, as we present a performance of the All-Night Vigil, or Vespers, of Sergei Rachmaninoff on August 23. Sigvards Kļava leads the Latvian Radio Choir in a luminous performance. On August 9, we’ll hear Part II of our series of Masses from Westminster. In 2000, Scottish composer James MacMillan composed a Mass for London’s Westminster Cathedral Choir, a complete service, exploring the mysteries of his deeply-held Catholic faith. We’ll couple that with a setting from the Renaissance, also featuring the Choir of Westminster Cathedral: the Missa Brevis by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. There’s another mass on August 30, as we continue our celebration of Beethoven at 250. Sir John Eliot Gardiner leads the Monteverdi Choir and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique in Ludwig van Beethoven’s Mass in C Major. We’ll follow with Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Te Deum, with La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy led by Jean-Claude Malgoire. Enjoy music offering comfort and serenity, Sundays at 9 p.m. this month on Classical WETA’s Choral Showcase.

oin Classical WETA production manager and on-air host John Banther for Classical Breakdown, a podcast from Classical WETA that features thoughtful and lively music discussions, taking listeners behind the music, making the classical music world understandable and accessible, and leading to a deeper appreciation of all things classical. The podcast, which launched last September, shares fascinating perspectives on music and musical artistry, from conversations with local musicians and touring artists to observations and analysis of well-known compositions. Banther, who has performed as a professional musician with leading ensembles and orchestras, shares his insights and first-hand knowledge in the podcasts, recent episodes of which spotlight: • World-renowned tenor Lawrence Brownlee, who shares his belief that we can achieve a more equal and diverse future in classical music. Brownlee relates his experience as a Black artist in the world of opera, discusses how organizations can work towards positive change, and offers steps we can take as classical music listeners. • Haydn’s 1st cello concerto, which was lost for 200 years and is now considered one of the greatest cello concertos of the 18th century. We learn how music can go missing, examine musical examples that set this concerto apart, and enjoy a full performance. • Aaron Goldman, Principal Flute of the National Symphony Orchestra: Goldman discusses the history of the flute and demonstrates various flutes you may have never heard before. He Tenor Lawrence Brownlee also shares his journey in music. • Summer listening: expand your musical palate with music found in an attic in 2009, new interpretations of Beethoven and Franck, and an instrument you’ve probably not heard before. Twenty-four episodes of Classical Breakdown, exploring classical music and how it is created, performed and recorded, are posted at website classicalbreakdown.org; stay tuned for new content coming in September.
