Robin Auld at Nevermind

It has been a good couple of years since I last saw Robin Auld play live, but I have been following him ever since I first saw him play at Club

Xenon in Cape Town since the late 80’s. My fondest memory of Robin Auld is meeting him at Kalk Bay Reef car park many, many years ago for an interview for SL Magazine. It just happened to be that there were waves at the reef, and there was no one about. I had a board in my old bakkie, and a wetsuit, and Robin lived around the corner. So we went for a surf.

Kalk Bay is a serious wave. If you make a mistake and wipe out there, it could lead to injury. I broke my elbow out there in my young days, so we had to both be fairly vigilant when the waves came.

I asked him a bunch of questions in between set waves, as we surfed by ourselves and that’s how I conducted my most natural, but most memorable interview ever.

Robin, jamming.

I have done so many interviews with him, watched him perform in London at The Mean Fiddler and we have bumped into each other all over the world, that when I saw he was going to perform at Nevermind, I decided to go along and just enjoy the music.

We booked a large table, and joined the throngs that were already seated on the deck at Nevermind Restaurant.

SHELTERED FROM THE WIND, WAVES AT SEAL POINT WERE FIRING, AND THERE WERE WHALES JUMPING AROUND IN THE BACKGROUND, AS ROBIN JAMMED HIS FAMILIAR TUNES.

Former number one hit single All Of Women was a popular track, with patrons singing along with their afternoon dops and delicious lunch from Nevermind. In Between his songs, Robin chatted to the audience in his engaging way, making him such a well-loved entertainer.

SHELTERED FROM THE WESTERLY BEHIND NEVERMIND RESTAURANT, HE BELTED OUT OTHER FIRM FAVOURITES LIKE SHESHEKE TOWN, ALL THE GIRLS CRIED, PERFECT DAY AND CHARLIE GO CRAZY AS WE CHEERED AND HAD A FEW DRINKS AND DID OUR BEST TO FORGET OUR TROUBLES AND COVID.

Robin is a keen surfer and a former Western Province Surfing Team member, as well as a big wave surfer and a stand-out at his beloved Kalk bay Reef, but while the waves were fun at The Point, he was too busy entertaining the crowds and having fun at the Seal Point lighthouse.

There was chat afterwards that Robin might be returning to perform some time soon, and it will be a good thing. His chilled attitude and rocking surf vibes go down well in our town. Here’s to hoping he returns soon.

All's good.
