Q A

: Why is my pool water cloudy?

: Several things could be contributing, so it’s important to find the right cause before treating the water to ensure you don’t waste your time. First up, check the filtration and circulation system. If the flow isn’t strong enough to push your hand away, you may have filter problems and need a service. There are other filter-related checks to perform: do you need to carry out a backwash? Is there a buildup of debris? Are filter media levels correct? Has the filter been chemically cleaned recently? As a rule, make sure the filter is running for up to 12 hours a day, depending on the location, season, pool type and equipment size. If it’s not the filter, check the chlorine levels (maintain between 1.0 and 3.0 ppm). If you can smell chlorine, your chloramines may be high. Check the pH (it should be between 7.2 and 7.6) and total alkalinity (which should be between 80 and 120 ppm). Being outside of this scale can cause cloudiness. Get your water tested at your local pool shop and ask for recommendations. The early stages of algae infestation can cause cloudy water. Ensure you add a preventative dose of algaecide every week. All cloudy water is not the same, and the required treatment varies based on the exact circumstances. Consult your local pool shop and bring along a water sample for testing. Check out the Caring for Your Pool & Spa section of our website for more details on treatments and instructions. www.poolspalife.com.au or email askus@spasa.com.au. WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

A POOL INSTALLATION IS A SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT, AND IT’S ONE THAT COMES WITH MANY CHOICES... SO HOW DO YOU DETERMINE WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?

I

nstalling a swimming pool for your backyard will provide years of enjoyment, fun and fitness for you, your family and your friends. But there are so many things to consider, from fundamental aspects like size, shape and construction material, right through to smaller aesthetic choices and finishing touches. Every decision you make can have a flow-on effect when it comes to other options and will almost definitely have an impact on price, so you want be sure to get it right from the beginning. To help get things started, here are some pros and cons on some of the most fundamental aspects of building a new pool.

IN-GROUND VS ABOVEGROUND

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to opt for an inground or above-ground pool. This was once a decision driven chiefly by price, when traditional vinyllined options were pretty much the only above-ground choice. That has all changed with the introduction of newer alternatives including shipping container pools, plunge pools and precast choices, which can all introduce considerations that will influence the ultimate choice and the price, as can other factors. For example, if you decide to build a deck around the pool to mimic an in-ground pool environment, you could easily see the costs shoot up. Make sure you are factoring in the total costs and comparing apples with apples. WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

Above-ground pools are also a great alternative when it simply isn’t possible to install a completely in-ground pool because of location limitations like a sloping site, access restrictions, excavation constraints or the need to level with an existing deck or other structure. For many potential pool owners, the biggest disadvantage of traditional vinyl-lined above-ground pools is simply the way they look. It can be difficult to install this type of pool in a way that improves the appearance of a home and backyard and convincingly creates the ‘resort living’ atmosphere that most homeowners are seeking. There are also more limitations in terms of available depths and design, as most above-ground pools are circular, oval or rectangular in shape and set to a specific depth with no potential for customisation. They also have a shorter life than in-ground pools and, as a result, are often not considered as a value-add to a property.

FIBREGLASS VS CONCRETE

If you’ve decided to go for an inground pool, some builders will offer the choice of either concrete or fibreglass as a construction material. One of the primary advantages of fibreglass pools is that they arrive onsite ready to go, which makes installation relatively quick. There are different fibreglass manufacturers out there, so make sure you choose one that is reputable. Summer Summer2022 2022

POOL&SPA | 9

Maree Voss, Marketing Manager from Aqua Technics Pools, says you should do your research to save heartache down the track. “Always make sure the manufacturer of your pool is certified to build to Australian Standards. Obtaining accreditation means being measured and tested by an authorised, independent auditor. “Anyone can say they build to the standard, but for your peace of mind always ask for a licence number,” Maree said. Fibreglass pools are durable, strong and flexible, and unlike others, should not need resurfacing during their lifetime. They come in a huge array of pre-moulded shapes and sizes to meet almost every requirement. However, some backyards (and clients) require a completely custom design, which means opting for a concrete pool that can be built to meet any shape or design specification. Concrete pools have been around a long time and they are reliable and strong. Newer pool designs are especially aesthetically pleasing and offer an almost infinite number of surface finishes to suit your taste and budget. That flexibility and customisation comes at a price, with the average concrete pool installation taking longer — sometimes several months versus a few weeks — and can also be more expensive given the bespoke nature and the materials used. Chelsea Watters, Designer & Project Administrator at Outside Signatures, believes concrete wins out for a variety of reasons. “We always recommend installing concrete pools for a variety of reasons. You can customise the pool into any shape or size, add any bench, stairs or beach area, you can even choose from a huge variety of finishes to line the pool. “This means the pool can be designed to fit each and every project while meeting council compliance. Every job is different, so every pool needs to be designed differently to get the best out of the backyard. 10 | POOL&SPA

Summer 2022

Other elements to consider: • Interior finish • Coping, tiling and decking, and paving • Fencing • Lighting • Heating • Filtration • Cleaning • Furniture and surrounds • Planting “Concrete pools are also great for sites with limited access — all you need is a small access path so you don’t have to watch a crane carry the pool over your house,” Chelsea said.

CHLORINE VS SALTWATER VS MINERALS One of the biggest decisions you’ll need to make is the type of water you’d like to swim in. This choice has ongoing effects when it comes to cleaning, maintenance and water chemistry considerations, so be sure to do your homework. Chlorinated pools use chlorine and other balancing chemicals to sanitise the pool water. These chemicals are generally added by hand or through an automatic feeder. Chlorine oxidises bacteria, algae, perspiration, skin oils and other contaminants and is an effective way to keep swimmers safe. For those with sensitive skin or dermal conditions like eczema or dermatitis, swimming in highly chlorinated and chemicalised pools can be problematic, irritating skin and causing dryness, itching and other discomfort.

While salt pools still produce chlorine, it is gentler than a traditional chlorine pool. Around 80–90% of Australian pools utilise salt water, though this number is dropping due to the rise in popularity of mineral pools. Mineral pools still use a chlorination process for sanitation and then, often in combination with salt, also utilise a magnesium-rich blend of minerals. Mineral pools provide health and wellbeing benefits, allowing the skin to absorb minerals and offering ultra-soft and comfortable water for swimmers. Magnesium is known to provide natural relief for muscular aches and pains while also soothing the nervous system. As the pool water is filled with natural emollients, it softens and hydrates the skin, which can be a useful property for those with eczema. New technologies — like advanced oxidation process (AOP) water sanitation — mean mineral pool owners get even closer to natural water, with some offering an 80% reduction in chlorine levels WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

when compared with traditional options. Mineral pools have a marginally higher upfront cost when compared with chlorine and salt water options. However, they require less ongoing chemical usage, meaning you save money on a monthly basis. They have the added advantage of enhancing water clarity and providing a natural de-scaling function that prevents calcium build-up on equipment.

THE OTHER INGREDIENTS

These are just three of the key considerations when deciding to install a swimming pool, but the choices you make now will influence others later on, so you need to think carefully before you start. Of course, some of these options will be ruled in or out simply by budget, site location and space availability, but the best thing you can do is engage an expert who can answer all of your questions and help guide you through the process. There are plenty of options on the table with an endless number of ways to create the perfect backyard sanctuary that’s guaranteed to deliver enjoyment for decades to come. Think lighting, planting, furniture and fencing... to name just a few. For the best advice and information on the most up-to-date technologies, speak with a SPASA member. E

veryone loves a swim on a hot day, right? For many pool owners, that assumption includes man’s best friend. But should pools be restricted to human guests only, or is a paddle okay for your pooch as well? In truth, there’s a range of health and safety issues to think about — from both sides. We all know the health benefits of swimming when it comes to humans — it’s well established that swimming is a great low-impact, whole-body exercise that can greatly improve cardiovascular health. EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT… BUT SOME BREEDS JUST CAN’T SWIM

© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Javier brosch

Whether or not your dog is suited to water will depend largely on the breed, but you can’t discount their individual personality. If your pooch hates baths, he probably won’t willingly leap into the pool for a few laps of dog paddle either. Don’t force your dog to swim and never throw him in without warning. If you do want to introduce him to the pool, do it calmly and gradually, ensuring that he is handled in a safe manner and feels supported. Personal preference aside, some dog breeds have features that just don’t lend themselves to swimming. Short-legged pups can find it difficult to manoeuvre through water and have trouble entering and exiting the pool using steps designed for human legs. ‘Squishy’ faced breeds like French bulldogs and pugs may struggle to keep their snouts above the water line, which means it’s easy for them to feel unsafe and quickly get into trouble. You’ll have to be the judge when it comes to your dog’s capability in the water, but don’t leave them

unattended just to be on the safe side. Even competent swimmers can tire quickly or lose confidence if something spooks them, so ensure you are always close by and can step in if needed.

WEAR, TEAR... AND HAIR Making sure your dog is well groomed will go a long way to reducing wear and tear on some pool elements, including the interior surface and the filtration system. Sharp nails can be a problem for the pool interior — especially in the case of vinyl-lined pools — but they’re also a safety hazard for other swimmers. You’ll want to make sure your pup’s nails are sufficiently clipped to prevent unwanted scratches and damage. Of course, you’ll also need to factor in dog hair — the amount will depend on the breed and the season. While it shouldn’t strain the filter system too much, you’ll definitely have to keep an eye on things and probably do some extra skimming to capture the additional load.

EXTRA BATHER LOAD Dogs bring more than hair into the pool — they bring dirt and skin oil, just like humans, and probably a bit of faecal matter as well. All of these can add organics and phosphates, Summer 2022

Tips for swimming with dogs

which algae love to feed on, so you may need to use a phosphate remover. You’ll definitely need to regularly check chlorine levels, ensure a healthy water balance to minimise health risks and may additionally require clarifiers or a shock dose if pool use has been particularly heavy.

ARE CHEMICALS SAFE FOR DOGS?

As with humans, chlorine and other pool chemicals may cause slight skin or eye irritations in dogs, but it shouldn’t be a significant problem. As much as practical, don’t let your dog lap up the pool water and make sure to have a bowl of cool clear tap water nearby to provide a preferable drinking alternative. Drinking pool water can cause gastrointestinal issues, particularly in saltwater pools. If your pup simply can’t stop, then remove them from the pool, pop them in the shade and ensure they have access to clear water. It’s good practice to hose off your dog both before and after a swim, lessening the dirt, hair and other contaminants entering the pool and minimising the risk of any 16 | POOL&SPA

Summer 2022

• Don’t assume your dog is a natural swimmer • Introduce your pup to the water slowly and calmly • Consider a doggy life jacket • Don’t let your dog drink the pool water and always supply a freshwater alternative • Stay nearby and keep an eye on your pooch — dogs can tire quickly • Rinse your pooch before and after swimming • Keep your pup groomed to lessen the likelihood of contaminants in the pool skin irritation post-swim. If your pooch has sensitive ears, watch out for ear infections, and make sure to clean and dry ears thoroughly after swimming.

SAFETY FIRST Dogs are no different to people when it comes to pool safety, so make sure you’ve considered everything you need to ensure an incident-free swim. There are plenty of available safety aids designed for pups, from doggy life jackets to flotation toys and a range of steps, ladders and ramps to make pool entry and exit easier. Life jackets are a great way to build confidence for dogs that are new to the pool. They are also

especially helpful for pups that tire easily or for more muscular (and therefore less buoyant) breeds. Take particular care around nonsolid pool covers, ensuring your pup can’t access the pool area when covers are fitted. Unattended dogs — even confident swimmers — can easily fall into the pool, slip under the cover and become trapped. If your dog enjoys the water, there is absolutely no reason why he or she can’t join you for a dip on a hot summer’s day. Just be sure to consider all of the safety factors outlined and be sure to monitor and maintain your swimming pool water to ensure that no-one’s health is at risk… including Fido’s. Converting your pool to a MagnaPool

D

o you own a saltwater or chlorine pool and want to convert to a MagnaPool? It is possible to experience the difference with just a few items. As MagnaPool is not compatible with cartridge filters, ensure you have a media filter fitted. It’s also recommended that you carry out a full water analysis prior to converting your pool to ensure everything goes smoothly. These components make up the MagnaPool system. Each element offers its own benefits. But, when all three are combined, the result is truly amazing. • The Hydroxinator & Reverse Polarity Electrolytic Cell • Glass Filtration Media WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

• MagnaPool Minerals Here’s the step-by-step conversion process: 1. Fit the Hydroxinator in a suitable spot and connect the electrolytic cell on the plumbing line. Any reputable pool care professional can do this for you and it should be relatively inexpensive. 2. Ensure you have a media filter, they generally come in thermoplastic or fibreglass and most media filters use sand. 3. Change the sand over to glass media. Removing

the sand from a filter will require a specialist and any reputable pool care professional can assist you. Once the filter is empty of sand, the glass media can be loaded. Use coarse glass on the bottom of the filter (just enough to cover the laterals is sufficient) and then the rest is filled with fine glass. This combination of coarse and fine allows for the best filtration and backwashing capabilities. 4. Get a salinity and/ or TDS test done to

Based upon the above measurements, you simply need to add in the appropriate amount of minerals and switch on your filtration equipment. 6. Once you’ve added the right amount of MagnaPool minerals, let the system run for at least 24 hours non-stop to get proper circulation and dilution. You may notice some foaming appear during this startup phase, this is part of the process. 7. Enjoy your new MagnaPool.

Everything you need to know about pool cleaners

A

s technology continues to advance, it makes pool ownership and maintenance cheaper, easier and less time-consuming. When it comes to cleaning, it’s all about set and forget with today’s automatic pool cleaners — a musthave for every pool owner. There are three basic types of automatic cleaners: robotic,

suction and pressure. Each type of cleaner offers a range of functions and features. Understanding the differences will help guide your decision when choosing the right cleaner for you and your pool.

ROBOTIC CLEANERS Robotic cleaners are designed to take the work out of pool cleaning. Plug the cleaner in, drop it in the water

and leave it to do its thing. These little beauties manoeuvre around the pool, picking up dirt, leaves and other items, giving the pool floor and walls a quick scrub as they go. They collect debris into a dedicated container, which means you’ll need to empty it after each use. They may not be the cheapest option when it comes to initial outlay, but robotic cleaners are very

energy efficient and include their own power supply, so you’ll find they’re more economical to run than other types. If you really care about saving energy and water, look for a cleaner that has been Climate Care Certified — it’s your guarantee that manufacturer claims about efficiency and sustainability have been verified by an independent third party.

Robots are available in a range of makes and models to suit pools of all types, shapes and sizes. They generally come with different cleaning options that can be programmed. They’re getting smarter by the day, with models now available that incorporate Wi-Fi connectivity and can be controlled from anywhere via an app. Many manufacturers offer an online selection tool to help you

determine which type of robotic cleaner is the best choice for your pool and lifestyle.

SUCTION CLEANERS Suction cleaners have been around for decades and remain a popular choice. They work by attaching a hose to the skimmer outlet and using the suction from your pool’s filtration system. The hose stays on

The pros and cons of automatic pool cleaners Robotic

Pros: Set and forget, smart, programmable and energy efficient, good for large pools Cons: Higher initial cost than other options, though running costs are lower.

Pros: Cheaper than other types, easy to install. Cons: Higher running costs, reduces skimmer functionality when plugged in, can cause extra load on the pump if skimmer box not emptied regularly.

Pros: Powerful, quick, can reach tight corners and collect items. Cons: Higher running costs, hard to retrofit, will not scrub surfaces.

pool store, as some models are more suited than others to sharp corners, curved walls, certain surfaces and obstacles like steps, drains or ladders. You will also need to ensure the hose length is adequate to allow access to the entire pool.

PRESSURE CLEANERS

A great option for pools with lots of debris including larger items like twigs, gumnuts, insects and high levels of leaf litter, pressure cleaners use a dedicated pool line and run off the water pressure from the pump. Some types may also require a separate booster pump, which means using more energy. Pressure cleaners have a compartment to collect debris, much the same as robotic cleaners, which need to be emptied regularly to ensure smooth operation. Most models lack a brush on the base, so they act more like a vacuum without the additional scrubbing functionality that other types of cleaners can provide. There are plenty of pressure cleaner choices on the market, though all are not created equal. Some are better climbers than others and many incorporate parts that will require ongoing maintenance and replacement. It is not an easy exercise to retrofit if your pool lacks a dedicated pool line, so other options may be a better bet.

TALK TO AN EXPERT

the water surface while the cleaner goes about its business on the pool floor. The upfront cost is cheaper than a robotic cleaner but, as they only work when the pool pump is in operation, running costs can escalate. They also rely on strong suction to push the cleaner around, so you may have to adjust the water flow or pressure to ensure smooth operation. Be warned, if you have installed a variable speed pool pump to save energy, a suction cleaner may struggle to perform effectively. 20 | POOL&SPA

Summer 2022

Leaves, dirt and debris are collected and sent to the skimmer basket, so you’ll need to monitor and empty after every clean. In addition, when the hose is attached to the outlet, the skimmer won’t draw in debris from the water surface, which means everything sinks to the floor for the cleaner to pick up. Again, many different makes and models are available, but you will really need to do your research, as they are not all suited to every shape and style of pool. Check out your options online or ask at your local

Take your time to do some research and speak to an expert who can help guide you. The specifics of your pool are the single biggest influence when it comes to the most appropriate choice. While it can be helpful to ask other pool owners what they think, just because a particular type of cleaner works well for someone else doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for you and your pool. A SPASAaccredited professional knows the questions to ask and can offer the right advice, ensuring you get the most from your investment. WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

Some of the changes arising from two years of social distancing and retail limits will probably continue long beyond the pandemic — for both retailers and pool owners. For instance, the days of standing in a long queue on a Saturday morning waiting for water testing will probably become a thing of the past, with most retailers now offering ‘click and collect’ services.

Some pool stores have taken this one step further, with on-road service technicians covering local areas and offering ‘letterbox testing’. Simply leave a water sample in your letterbox and it will be collected and tested. When the results are available, you’ll be contacted with advice on exactly what your pool needs... too easy! According to Serana McNicol of Victoria’s Poolside Melton, the contactless model offers clients everything they need while ensuring everyone remains safe. “Our role is to keep water sanitised, balanced and healthy, and this has been just as important during lockdown. We have been busier than ever, packing orders, taking water samples and delivering analysis outcomes and guidance through contactless ways,” she said.

POOL STORES INVEST... AND YOU REAP THE BENEFIT Savvy retailers have taken the time to invest and improve their online capability, upgrading e-commerce platforms to facilitate easy ordering and delivery for customers. It’s also been a time to focus on what’s new and exciting, so your local pool store team has been busy keeping up to date on product developments that will not only deliver a healthy swimming experience, but will save you time and money as well.

What’s on offer? Your local pool store can offer expert advice on all things pool and spa, along with servicing, spare parts and all of the latest technologies designed to make pool ownership easy: • Chemicals • Chlorinators • Cleaners and accessories • Filters • Pumps • Pool safety • Pool toys enjoyment and create a true backyard sanctuary. For some, this means focusing on health and wellness, for others it’s all about poolscaping, furniture or garden design. And for another group, it’s as simple as taking the work out of pool ownership. Mineral pools use magnesium salt to soften the water and provide additional health and wellness benefits, making them an increasingly popular choice for families looking for alternatives to traditional sanitation methods… particularly during a time when health and wellness has been the order of the day. with continuing advances delivering self-dosing and remote monitoring options designed to make pool ownership easier and give you more time to enjoy your pool. For those with environmental concerns, look out for products that are Climate Care Certified. These are the industry gold standard, delivering efficiencies in water and energy use, noise reduction and sustainable designs that will minimise your environmental footprint and save you money. If you need expert advice and access to the latest premium technologies on offer, look no further than your local pool store.

RETAIL IN A NEW WORLD

The ‘new normal’ puts increased responsibility on businesses, requiring adherence to governmentmandated procedures and protocols to ensure that retail stores are safe for both workers and customers. These protocols include QR code check-ins, in-store social distancing, maintaining a high level of hygiene and checking the vaccination status of both staff and customers. While the extra requirements can be a little frustrating for retail customers, we all need to play our part in order to minimise further disruption. Supporting your local pool store is a positive step that will help in the recovery of retail and ensure you have access to the expert advice and equipment needed to keep your pool in tip top condition. It’s been a difficult time for everyone, with customers keen to get back into the world and pool store staff more than happy to see them. “The support from our customers has been overwhelming, with positive feedback being a main driver keeping our team’s spirits high during this incredibly difficult time. We can’t wait to welcome our customers back into our store,” Serana said. All about algae

A

lgae can be a big problem in pools — so what is it and how do you get rid of it and stop the problem from recurring?

WHAT IS IT?

Algae are aquatic plant organisms that tend to thrive in swimming pool environments. Like any living thing, they require air, sunlight, water and nutrients to survive. Algae spores are introduced to the pool via the elements, like wind and rain, or can hitch a ride on contaminated cleaning tools or general debris. When conditions are right, algae will thrive. They eat nutrients in the water — mainly phosphates and nitrates — and rapidly multiply on warm sunny days when they can photosynthesise, taking in carbon dioxide and expelling oxygen. That desire to be in sunlight means you’ll generally find algae in

the shallowest water of the pool, particularly on steps and swim-outs.

HOW DO YOU GET RID OF ALGAE?

Algae love out-of-balance water, sunlight, warmth and a steady stream of nitrates and phosphates. If your pool contains debris or lacks adequate circulation, filtration or sanitisation, it’s a recipe for algal bloom, which can occur within hours. Every pool contains algae — even those with clean and clear water. It doesn’t take much for algae to take hold, so you need to deprive them of one of the elements that is essential to their survival. In swimming pools, it’s easiest to remove their required nutrients — specifically phosphates — by using a phosphate remover. Unfortunately, algae are superhardy and they often become resistant to normal sanitiser

treatments. Specialist algaecides may be required to combat the problem. There are many available options, so speak with your local pool shop or accredited pool tech to determine which will work for you. Once you’ve managed to kill the algae off, ensure you remove it from the pool surface, as the dead remains will become a source of food for the next generation. Brush it from the surface so it can be removed via filtration or vacuumed out.

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR POOL ALGAE-FREE?

Keeping water balance in check and monitoring sanitiser levels will help, but you may also need to give the pool the occasional shock dosing to keep algae under control. If necessary, regular use of algaecide and a phosphate removal program will ensure your pool remains clean and free from algae.

your pool up and running before you arrive home from work, allowing you to get straight in and make the most of your evening.

Creating a lowmaintenance pool

L

ow maintenance is a term that is rarely associated with pool ownership. In years gone by, the work required to keep a pool in tiptop condition and looking the right colour whilst being safe to swim in was enough to turn some people off the idea of pool ownership. However, with pool equipment manufacturers racing to incorporate timesaving technology into their products along with internet integration and apps, we asked Hayward Pool Products whether it really is now truly possible to spend longer in your pool than working on it. FOR BUSY HOMEOWNERS, WHAT ARE THE BEST CURRENT TECHNOLOGIES AVAILABLE FOR REDUCING THE WORK REQUIRED TO RUN A POOL? Probably the quickest and easiest thing that you can do to make maintenance easy is to cut down on the time and effort it takes to clean your pool. You can do this by investing in an automatic pool cleaner. It will remove WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

debris and scrub the pool for you — all you have to do is remember to empty it. The new AquaVac 650 Robotic Cleaner from Hayward has even done away with filters, meaning you can stay away from the mess and empty it with the touch of a button. A more long-term solution to improve the ownership experience would be to invest in an automation system to run your pool. Many owners install a pool to improve the lifestyle of themselves or their families. In the past they have been unable to fully enjoy this change due to the work required to maintain and run a pool. Automation removes many of these time-consuming and labour-intensive tasks so the owner can enjoy the lifestyle improvements that a pool can bring. ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC HAYWARD POOL PRODUCTS THAT YOU’D RECOMMEND FOR A BUSY HOMEOWNER? WHY? Hayward OmniLogic pool and backyard automation is

the perfect system for a busy homeowner. It provides an easy way to control the chemistry of your pool and spa, as well as the heating, lighting, water features and any other pool or backyard equipment required by the user. The system takes the hassle out of pool ownership by bringing together all the elements of a modern energy-efficient pool and allowing the user to control it with an app. With an OmniLogic installed you can quickly and simply get your pool running exactly how you like it, at the touch of a button. Owners can access their pool from anywhere as long as they’re connected to the internet. So rather than having to manually switch valves or press buttons around the pool, the owner can do this from the comfort of their sun lounger. You can even get

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BUSY HOMEOWNERS LOOKING TO INCORPORATE AUTOMATION INTO THEIR NEW POOL? When choosing your pool equipment make sure that you are comfortable with understanding how it operates — modern systems can appear complicated and this can be off-putting to some people. The last thing you want is to be standing around scratching your head trying to figure out how to get your filtration running when you could be in the pool splashing around. However, if a system is set up in accordance with the needs of the pool owner and a good handover is provided by the installer, pool automation can truly transform your ownership experience and turn it into the dream you always hoped it would be. Caring for natural stone pavers and tiles

N

atural stone pavers and tiles add a beautiful contemporary touch to outdoor designs and are an increasingly popular poolside choice. Of course, you’ll want your investment to look as good as new for as long as possible, so should you seal your natural stone tiles and pavers? Most suppliers and builders will say ‘yes’, because, while sealing natural stone doesn’t make it completely stain-proof, it does slow the rate of penetration beyond the surface giving you a little time to clean up before permanent damage is done. Sealing also helps protect the stone from salt and other chemicals. But — and it’s a big but — sealing natural stone in a poolside environment can sometimes contribute to premature deterioration of the stone itself, presenting quite the conundrum for pool owners. Why does it happen and what can you do about it?

30 | POOL&SPA

Summer 2022

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? Sealant products fall into two camps: surface sealers and penetrating sealers. As a rule, surface sealers should not be used for exterior installations including your pool deck and surround. That’s because they deliver an impermeable barrier which helps prevent liquids and gases getting into the stone — but also stops them from escaping, which can be an issue if there is moisture below the surface. Penetrating sealers can also contribute to the breakdown of stone where pavers have been laid over an impermeable layer (like concrete) and water has no other way of escaping than through the stone surface. Because the paver has been sealed, water passes through as vapour but leaves behind soluble compounds that accumulate under the sealed layer and can cause the stone to flake.

SO… SHOULD YOU SEAL? Unfortunately, this is not a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ question as there is a range of impacting factors. Sealers can definitely improve the appearance of natural stone, make it more resistant to staining and easier to clean. They are not a one-off solution, and you’ll need to reapply every few years to maintain the effectiveness of the seal. To avoid the issues outlined above, you need to go back to the

design stage and ensure you are choosing a suitable stone material for the job — it should be durable, salt resistant where possible and exhibit stain resistant properties. If you’ve decided you’ll probably want to seal, then select a material that will readily take up the product, as some are naturally resistant. Some suppliers also suggest sealing pavers and tiles before installation, as sealing all sides of the paver can

reduce moisture uptake that occurs when only one side is treated. If you aren’t sure which path to travel down, speak with a supplier or installer that works specifically with natural stone products to better understand the benefits and limitations of your chosen pavers. Getting the best advice will help ensure your installation looks as good as new for years to come.

P

ools have come a long way in recent times — where the line between house and backyard was once clear, outdoor spaces are now a valuable living and entertaining area to be enjoyed day and night, all year round. A comprehensive and well-designed whole-garden lighting scheme will completely transform a darkened outdoor space to produce the perfect ambience… but for pure drama, nothing beats a good lighting feature. If you’re looking for ideas to bring your pool to life, the following lighting tips will ensure it shines from dusk till dawn.

WRAP IT UP WITH A WATER FEATURE

Water and lighting make great partners when it comes to creating a scene. If your pool incorporates a feature like a water wall, fountain or water jets, you’ve got a ready-made lighting feature right there. Combining colour, movement and the sound of cascading water immediately takes things to a whole new level. Establish a vibrant wall of colour or a soft splash of light… work with the elements you have to establish a point of visual interest and bring resort-style living home. 36 | POOL&SPA

HIGHLIGHT THE POOL’S ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS

As pool designs continue to break new boundaries and deliver exciting architectural surprises, why not showcase them? A few well-placed light fittings at the base of an exterior wall or pool perimeter strip lighting will deliver a dramatic effect against the inky darkness of night, while showing off your unique pool design.

MAKE USE OF OTHER STRUCTURES

Don’t let gazebos, outdoor rooms or structures like shade cloths fade into the background when they can add a bit of pizazz. Create eye-catching lighting features by following rooflines or highlighting interesting design elements.

DON’T FORGET THE GARDEN Utilising trees, shrubs and other plants is a great way to play with shadow and light. Lighting up branches and foliage can deliver interesting shapes and effects that will continue to morph as the garden grows and present you with a living artwork. Of course, lighting features are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to styling your outdoor space and painting with light. There are countless ways to bring life and colour to your garden and poolside area with clever lighting designs, tips and techniques. othing makes for a disappointed pool owner like coming home after a long day at work, dreaming of a refreshing dip, only to find the pool is green — but a new Wi-Fi-enabled product from Davey can solve that problem, according to Davey Pool & Spa Product Manager Tori Caskie. Davey’s new ChloroMatic Lifeguard is a complete pool and chemistry controller that offers simple pool management, right from your phone. “Pool owners want a pool that is easy to maintain and, most important of all, ready for swimming whenever

they are,” Tori says. “With ChloroMatic Lifeguard, acid dosing, chlorination, and even pool temperature can all be automated, and the app will let you know if you are running low on salt or minerals, all you need to check is the acid drum. No more surprises when you go to use your pool!” The user-friendly app offers full control over your pool system - view and modify filtration schedules and modes, and adjust set points as required. It can also be controlled locally, if you’re unable to connect to Wi-Fi. “It’s the easy way to manage pool maintenance,”

Tori says. “It’s very simple to activate winter settings or prep the pool for a summer party, and for day-to-day maintenance, ChloroMatic Lifeguard does all the work.” The controller integrates with Davey’s compact saltwater chlorinator — ChloroMatic Nipper. The products are available as a set or the controller is available as a standalone product for pool owners who already have a Nipper and want to upgrade.

The main controller communicates with other Davey pool equipment, via plugs on the back of the unit or Wi-Fi. If you have a Davey or Davey by Nirvana heat pump, ChloroMatic Lifeguard can also maintain the pool temperature to a set point during the filtration cycle. ChloroMatic Lifeguard is suitable for pools up to 175,000 litres and can be used for salt or mineral pools.

SECURE YOUR SAFETY

THIS SUMMER

A

s the weather warms up and the pool beckons, make safety a top priority for your family, friends and guests by carrying out a few simple checks on your pool fence and gate. The need for safety around the pool can never be overstated — something the latest Royal Life Saving Society of Australia annual report highlights. Over the last 12 months, toddler drowning deaths in Australia increased by 108%, meaning that 25 children aged between zero and four years lost their lives in largely preventable circumstances. Spending a day by the pool is one of life’s great pleasures and something that family and friends across Australia enjoy every year. Make sure this summer is a safe one for you and yours by carrying out these few simple checks.

Check your pool gate and fence • Do a visual check of the fence, gate and surrounding area. Ensure that both the fencing and the gate are free from damage like cracks or holes. • Your gate must open outwards and should be both self-closing and selflatching. The latch release knob should be a minimum of 1500 mm from ground level, so it remains out of reach for kids.

38 | POOL&SPA

Summer 2022

• Ensure that furniture and garden elements like plants, rocks and lighting do not present footholds for climbing gates or fences. • Remove all loose items that could be used to prop open the pool gate.

Summer 2022

© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Jane Kelly

• Check the gate latch and hinges. It is essential that the latch cannot be disconnected or held in the open position using tools or other implements. Hinges should be rustfree and working freely. • Make sure that the gate shuts firmly and securely without assistance from any open position.

This is the most basic of checklists and something you should carry out regularly to ensure you are providing a safe environment. Please remember that standards and regulations vary according to where you live, and you must ensure that your fencing complies with local requirements. All Australian states and territories require that barriers for swimming pools and spas comply with relevant local regulations and the specific applicable version of Australian Standard AS 1926.1 Safety Barriers for Swimming Pools. While regulations may vary slightly by region, they are all designed to keep young children safe in the absence of adult supervision. You should contact your local council for specific details and be aware that compulsory registration of pools and spas applies in some states. Adult supervision is the single most important safety factor when it comes to kids and pools. Never leave children unattended, even if you’ve completed all the checks and are satisfied that your safety barrier complies with all required regulations. Drowning is largely silent and commotion-free, so having eyes on the little ones at all times is essential. For more information on pool fencing regulations, visit the SPASA Australia website.
