Happy swimming!

ASK the expert

Q: Our new home came with a fibreglass pool which we are told is probably 15 or 20 years old. The interior looks like it’s seen better days and has a faded, chalky appearance. In some areas, the pool surface is flaking. How serious are these problems and how do we address them?

A:Without photos, it’s hard to accurately diagnose but it’s not surprising to see some degradation at that age. Fibreglass pools incorporate a gelcoat interior that is designed to resist scratches and UV but will generally fade over time. The chalkiness you are describing is possibly due to oxidisation of the gelcoat, which can happen with age but may also be a sign of overchlorination or calcium build-up. Gelcoat oxidation can be the result of a water imbalance — like high pH or high total alkalinity — something you are about to become very familiar with as a new pool owner. Welcome to the club!

The sensible thing to do in this situation is call in the experts. A qualified fibreglass pool builder will assess the damage and advise the best course of action, which could be to resurface the pool interior. This involves taking off the gelcoat, making any repairs required — like fixing the flaking — and then applying a new layer of fibreglass. The upshot will be a pool that looks like new and gives you plenty of trouble-free swimming for years to come.

LOOKING FOR

WAYS

TO TURN A DULL OUTDOOR SPACE INTO A FLOURISHING GARDEN OASIS? RELATIVELY SIMPLE TO INSTALL AND MAINTAIN, VERTICAL GARDENS AND LIVING WALLS REALLY DELIVER THE WOW.

Nothing transforms a bare area like the addition of greenery — lush plants, cascading foliage and vibrant blooms can help bring a space to life. Vertical gardens have boomed in recent years, especially in urban environments, where they help soften hard surfaces and add a touch of drama without sacrificing space.

GREENERY GAINS

There are plenty of reasons to install green walls or other vertically planted options — from appearance to privacy and even environmental considerations.

APPEALING AESTHETICS

Transform your poolside paradise into a stunning green haven, amping up the atmosphere and creating a sense of resort-style living at home.

With so many varieties of plants available, the world is your oyster — throw as much, or as little, into the design as you like. Colours, shapes and sizes can all be used to dramatic effect to create an area and ambiance that reflects your style.

SAVE ON SPACE

Growing up means you can enjoy a thriving garden without losing floor space, saving room for furniture, shading and other outdoor elements like fountains or firepits.

PROTECTED PRIVACY

A freestanding vertical garden can be used to divide areas, creating a natural screen that offers a sense of seclusion. Block out the neighbours and enjoy your pool in privacy with family and friends.

Spring 2023 POOL&SPA | 11 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

PURIFYING PLANTS

There are even health benefits to installing green walls and pots, as some plant varieties filter pollutants and provide fresher air — a bonus if your garden is in an outdoor room or other smaller or semi-enclosed space.

CLIMATE CONTROL

Thanks to the insulating properties of plants, a living wall cools hot outdoor spaces on long summer days and can help trap heat through the cooler months.

SOUND INVESTMENT

Replacing hard flat surfaces with plants will cut out reverberation and help reduce noise levels, bringing an air of tranquillity into your outdoor spaces.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

Flowers, plants and grasses will attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, as well as other insects and birds that can help with pest management, creating a localised ecosystem and increasing your backyard biodiversity.

GETTING STARTED: HOW TO BUILD A VERTICAL GARDEN

Before you rush out to the garden centre, you’ll need to do some planning. Here are a few things to consider when designing for your space. LOCATION

You may have limited choices when it comes to location or have specific plants that you want to grow, but the site of your vertical garden or living wall will impact almost all other decisions… so choose wisely.

Unless you’re creating a selfstanding wall, you will need to find a vertical surface — a wall or a fence — that receives enough sunlight to sustain the plants you want to feature. Be mindful of the changing conditions throughout the day and at various times of the year. A northfacing area that receives full sun in winter might struggle to support the same plants with less direct light in summer. Delicate plants may cope

with a westerly aspect in winter but not survive a summer scorching.

STRUCTURE SUITABILITY

If using a wall or fence to support your vertical garden structure, make sure it can handle the load. The combined weight of the frame, pots, plants and wet soil can be substantial, so you’ll need to be sure that any fixings you use are up to the job and that the structure itself is sound. Seek some professional advice if you are unsure.

PLANNING

Determining the layout and design using plants is one of the most exciting parts of planning your vertical garden. Think about colours, textures and sizes — visualise how your plants will work with each other, as well as the other landscaping and design elements of your pool and outdoor area. It may help to sketch your ideas using online drawing tools or good old pencil and paper.

Plants need to be practical as well as being beautiful — don’t opt for

12 | POOL&SPA Spring 2023 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Kien

anything with long spiky leaves if they are likely to stab passers-by and avoid plants that drop flowers, leaves, nuts or seeds if the wall is close to the pool.

Geographic location plays a part too, so look for native and climateadapted plants that will thrive in your local conditions.

PREPARING THE FRAME

Garden centres and hardware stores have tonnes of ideas for vertical gardens and sell modular starter kits that make the whole job easy, with every aspect covered. Clip-together options let you mix and match individual pots, making it simple to rearrange the layout if needed. If you’re going the DIY route, trellises are a great starting point for a frame. Just make sure there is enough space between your frame and wall or fence to allow for air circulation.

IRRIGATION

This is where the wheels fall off for many vertical garden projects. Your vertical garden plants will need attention, including efficient watering. When you’re on the go juggling work, family and everything else, the last thing you’ll think about when you come home at night is tending to the garden. Setting up a drip irrigation or soaker hose means you can set and forget, knowing that your plants are getting the water they need with minimum waste and no fuss.

PLANTING

After planning and prepping, it’s time to purchase the plants and get them into the pots or frame pockets. Use the best quality potting mix you can find for the types of plants you’ve chosen. Garden centre staff can help with the right choice. Always follow the planting guidelines included and be sure you are leaving enough space for plants to fill out.

ONGOING CARE

All plants need regular ongoing care to live their best lives. Be sure to keep an eye on the following: Water — when it comes to water, most plants are like Goldilocks: they don’t like too little or too much. Even

if you’ve set up an irrigation system, check the soil regularly and adjust water as needed. Some plants like to dry out between waterings, while others prefer constant conditions. They’ll behave differently throughout the year as well. Fertiliser — plants need more than water and light to keep growing, especially in containers. They take the nutrients they need from soil, so you’ll need to keep it fed. If there’s a specialist fertiliser option available for your specific plants, use it. Otherwise, go for a general slow-release product and use as directed.

Pruning and trimming — remove leaves and flowers (also known as deadheading) and give plants a prune every now and then to encourage growth and improve air circulation,

which helps reduce the risk of disease. Pests — monitor regularly for any signs of pests like aphids or mealy bugs, as well as diseases like rusts and funguses. The sooner you spot any problems, the quicker you can act, minimising infestation to other plants. Rearranging — you might notice some spots in your vertical garden promote growth more than others. Give all your plants a chance by rotating positions and seeing which location works best for each.

Gardening gives you a great reason to spend more time outdoors and there’s nothing more satisfying than watching your plants thrive. While these tips should help maintain your vertical garden year-round, don’t be afraid to experiment and make adjustments to see what works best.

Creating a more sustainable pool

Human-induced warming has reached approximately 1°C above pre-industrial levels in 2017, increasing at 0.2°C per decade. It is estimated that the global temperature is projected to warm by about 1.5°C by 2050. We should all do our part to make small but effective changes to promote

more sustainable pool management. The two easiest changes that we can do are switching to a variable speed pump to reduce energy usage and a single cartridge filter to conserve as much water as possible.

VARIABLE SPEED PUMPS

Variable speed pumps offer significant benefits

for swimming pools in terms of enhanced water quality and flexibility through customisable operation. But above all, the eco-friendly benefits of energy efficiency, cost savings, and extended equipment lifespan are priceless for environmental sustainability. Unlike traditional single-speed pumps that operate at a

fixed speed, variable speed pumps will allow you to adjust the pump’s speed and flow rate according to the specific needs of the pool. This flexibility brings several advantages.

Energy efficiency: When required, variable speed pumps can operate at lower speeds, consuming significantly less energy than traditional pumps

14 | POOL&SPA Spring 2023 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Zenturio Designs

that run at a constant high speed. Since these pumps consume less energy while maintaining proper circulation and filtration, the overall operating costs of the pool are significantly lowered. We estimate the energy savings to be up to 70% when compared to a single speed pump. The initial investment in a variable speed pump can be recouped relatively quickly through ongoing energy savings.

Extending equipment lifespan: The ability to adjust pump speed means that pool equipment like filters, heaters, and chlorinators can operate more efficiently. This reduced strain on the equipment leads to less wear and tear, extending the overall lifespan of the pool components. This minimises the need for frequent replacements and repairs, further reducing maintenance costs and extending the equipment lifespan.

The AstralPool Viron XT range of variable speed pumps are the best in class, designed and built in Australia, specific for the tough Australian conditions. Alongside, the Zodiac FloPro range of valuable speed pumps are durable and built with high quality materials, and are available in 1HP, 1.5HP and 2HP capacities. With a low decibel noise rating, the Viron XT and FloPro VS pumps are suitable for a variety of different

pool activities, such as filtration, in-floor cleaning, or running water features, requiring varying flow rates. The suite of available customisations not only enhances the swimming experience but also maximizes energy efficiency by avoiding unnecessary high-speed operation.

SINGLE CARTRIDGE FILTERS

A single cartridge filter is the perfect eco-friendly option to minimise water wastage and reduce the need for chemical treatments.

Water conservation: Unlike media filters, there is no backwashing required for a single cartridge filter. During the maintenance and cleaning of the filter cartridge, there is minimal water loss, saving thousands of litres of water every year. It is estimated that a single cartridge filter would reduce up to 90% of water loss during cleaning, when compared to backwashing of a traditional sand media filter.

Efficient filtration reduces chemical usage: Single cartridge filters efficiently capture particles, debris, and contaminants from the pool water up to 10 microns. As a result, the water remains clearer and cleaner, reducing the need for excessive chemical treatments to maintain water quality. This not only promotes a healthier swimming environment

through reduced chemicals, but also conserves water, as you won’t need to frequently dilute and replace the water due to chemical imbalances.

To complement the energy efficient variable speed pumps, are the recently released AstralPool XC range and the Zodiac ZXC range of single cartridge filters. Made from single injection moulded Polypropylene material, which is 100% recyclable, the XC and ZXC range

of filters come with a patented cyclonic filtration technology for a more efficient filtration cycle. Together the variable speed pump and the single cartridge filter are the best equipment for an environmentally responsible pool filtration system, saving more than 2500 kgs of CO2 annually. Embracing the future: Heat pumps pave the way for efficient pool heating

As the world takes bold steps towards a sustainable future, the pool and spa industry is no exception. The recent announcement by the Victorian government, which bans gas connections in new homes and new public buildings, such as schools, hospitals, police stations and governmentowned buildings, from January 2024, has spurred

a remarkable shift in the way we think about heating our pools and spas.

A GLIMPSE INTO A GASFREE TOMORROW

As the gas ban takes effect, pool and spa owners and builders are presented with the opportunity to explore alternative heating methods. With this recently announced decision aligning with

environmental goals, there’s no doubt that heat pumps are the premier choice for energy efficient and reliable pool and spa heating.

HEAT PUMPS: A LEAP FORWARD IN EFFICIENCY

A heat pump is an energy efficient heating solution that offers exceptional efficiency, reduced carbon footprint, and costeffectiveness. They are a

reliable heating option that can operate efficiently in temperatures as low as -7°C.

The upfront investment in heat pump technology can lead to significant long-term savings as energy-efficient systems quickly offset the initial costs.

Heat pumps work by extracting heat from the surrounding air and

22 | POOL&SPA Spring 2023 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Yulia

transferring it to heat your pool. Unlike traditional gas heaters, heat pumps do not rely on fossil fuels, making them an ideal solution for a future without gas connections.

One of the most significant advantages of heat pumps is their energy efficiency. For every unit of electricity they consume, an EvoHeat pump can generate up to 16kW of heat, making them highly energy efficient. This efficiency not only

translates to lower energy bills but also contributes to the overarching goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

ENVIRONMENTAL BACKING

The endorsement of the gas ban by environmental groups and key players in the property and construction sectors speaks volumes about the viability and importance of embracing heat pump technology.

TECH TROUBLESHOOTING

Chemical dosers

Like everything else, pool ownership involves a fair bit of tech these days, and it might not always run smoothly. There’s often a simple solution to what looks like a complex problem and that’s where we can help. Before you tear your hair out, we’ll run through some common issues, possible causes and potential fixes for pool equipment problems. This issue’s tech troubleshooting topic is… Chemical Dosers.

Automatic chemical dosers are fantastic for maintaining the proper water chemistry in swimming pools, helping keep the pool water balanced and sanitised without the need for continual manual intervention. Like any mechanical device, however, they may encounter problems from time to time. Here are some common issues, potential causes and steps to help get things running again. Remember to always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions and seek professional assistance if problems persist.

Pool owner-friendly in-floor cleaning system saves you time, lowers energy and maintenance costs

Waterco’s Blue Square in-floor system cleans the entire pool, even while you swim

Don’t waste hours cleaning your new pool when Waterco’s Blue Square Q360 in-floor pool cleaning system can do it for you. Virtually invisible, the Q360 system is fully automatic and can handle high debris levels so there is no need for an

additional cleaner with hoses and cords to become tangled in. The Q360 system also circulates water through the pool resulting in less algae growth, better heat and chemical dissipation with increased operating efficiencies and reduced chemical and heating costs.

Though in-floor pool cleaning systems have been around for years, nothing currently on the market comes close to the efficiency of Waterco’s Blue Square Q360 in-floor pool cleaning system. With less moving parts and a revolutionary valve design

propelling water more effectively through the system, the Blue Square Q360 automatically cleans most of the pool even while you swim.

“This is an in-floor cleaning system which has been aerospace engineered to provide an effective

30 | POOL&SPA Spring 2023 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

and efficient clean of the whole pool,” says Adam Shelley from Waterco. “It’s designed for maximum flow rate and to enhance circulation and evenly distribute water, which is great for heated pools in cool climates. Not only that, overall energy savings are enhanced.”

HOW IT WORKS

An in-floor cleaning system is designed prior

to the swimming pool being constructed or manufactured, depending on the pool interior. In consists of a series of heads which pop up in the floor and steps of the pool. Their purpose is to drive the dirt and debris towards an in-floor drain point, usually located in the deep end of the pool. Once the dirt is removed from the drain point by the pump, it usually passes

into the filtration system where it will get trapped.

In leafy pools, there is an additional primary straining point, which catches the heavy leaf matter before the filtration system which will free up the skimmer box and enable leaves to be skimmed from the surface of the pool. Every system must be designed individually as every pool is usually a different shape and size. This system also aids in chemical distribution and heat circulation throughout the entire pool. Some systems rely solely on the filtration pump to drive them and others require a separate pump to operate the cleaning system.

Q360 CLEANING JETS

Similar to a pop up garden sprinkler, the Blue Square Q360 system includes 360° 14-point rotation in-floor mounted cleaning jets, which rise successively to sweep debris from the pool floor and steps, becoming virtually invisible when it lowers to flush when finished. The 360° rotating jets evenly distribute cleaning power and increase the circulation of your pool water. Cleaning jets are available in five colours to allow pool owners the flexibility to coordinate with their pool’s finish. Replacement heads are easy to remove and install.

AROUND Lazing

Sun loungers, recliners, hammocks and swings

A LUXURIOUS POOLSIDE OR GARDEN RETREAT NEEDS A COMFORTABLE PLACE TO KICK BACK AND CHILL. TRY THESE SEATING OPTIONS ON FOR SIZE.

Spring is a great time to spruce up your outdoor area in preparation for summer entertaining. Whether lounging poolside, swinging in a hammock or just enjoying a little time al fresco, comfort is the name of the game. But not all outdoor options are created equal — here’s our guide to finding the perfect lazing choice.

SUN LOUNGERS, RECLINERS AND DAYBEDS

The epitome of relaxation, sun loungers and recliners offer the perfect location for poolside leisure — whether reading a book, catching a few rays or kicking back in the shade with a cocktail. There are plenty of material choices and designs for every budget, but there are a few practical considerations as well.

PLASTIC OR POLYCARBONATE

Plastic and polycarbonate sun loungers are lightweight and affordable. They are often stackable, which will help with storage if you aren’t likely to use them year-round.

Look for UV-resistant or UVstabilised options, as some plastics can break down pretty quickly when exposed to the elements. While lightweight furniture is easy to move, it might also need to be tied down or otherwise secured in rough weather like storms or high winds.

When it comes to looks, plastic and polycarbonate tend to lack the

aesthetic appeal of some other options. A lower price point makes them seem like an economical option but there are more durable material choices available. Think about lifespan when working out your budget, to avoid forking out more in the long run.

WOOD

Wooden sun loungers are always popular. Made from a natural material, they look right at home in garden and poolside settings.

You’ll probably find both soft and hardwood options in your search. Softwood trees are evergreens. These

trees grow quickly, which causes air pockets to form in the wood fibres, giving the wood its ‘soft’ quality. Hardwoods are slow growth trees, a process that delivers a denser (or harder) wood fibre. Both soft and hard wood can be suitable for loungers and other seating, provided they have water-resistant (antiwicking) properties.

Cedar, cypress and redwood are good softwoods for outdoor furniture, while pine (even when treated) lacks the durability to reliably withstand the elements, so isn’t really a great long-term alternative. When it comes to hardwoods, look for local options like jarrah or red gum, or established imports including teak and mahogany.

Most wood choices will require regular maintenance like sanding, priming, oiling or varnishing, but they tend to age well and are definitely a robust option when properly maintained. The weight means you probably won’t want to move these loungers around too often so, if portability is a consideration, look for a lighter material. On the flip side, they’re unlikely to need tying down, provided you aren’t in cyclone territory.

SYNTHETIC WICKER AND RATTAN

There’s a good reason why woven synthetic outdoor furniture is everywhere you look. These sun loungers work on many levels — they offer the visual appeal of natural materials without the fragility and short life span. They are lighter than wood, require little to no maintenance and can handle being out in the elements.

They offer a bit more design freedom than some of the other material options, so you’ll probably find a range of sofa and daybed styles on offer, in addition to single recliner loungers.

ALUMINIUM

Lightweight, rust-resistant and lowmaintenance, aluminium ticks a lot of boxes, especially if you’re looking for a sleek modern look to fit in with a contemporary outdoor space. Powder coating provides an extra layer of protection and gives you more variation, so you can tie in colour choices to match with other decorative outdoor elements.

For all its benefits, aluminium can get pretty hot when exposed to sunlight, but it does cool quickly when moved into the shade. It’s not the most comfortable of options, but that’s where cushions and padding will save you.

FABRICS, FOAMS, CUSHIONS AND COVERS

If you’re really serious about relaxing, you might want to invest in some soft furnishings. While the construction of some sun loungers may deliver a perfectly comfortable experience as is, some of the harder choices will benefit from padding and cushions.

Look for fabrics and foams designed specifically for outdoor use — for foams, that means quick-dry, while fabrics should be fade- and UV-resistant, mould- and mildew-resistant, as well as being water-resistant (or waterproof) and breathable. It’s a lot to ask from fabric, so be prepared to pay a little extra for choices that fit the bill. Even with all those protective features, you should store cushions and padding out of the elements when they’re not in use.

Check your local pool or outdoor store for furniture covers designed specifically for sun loungers. Covering furniture when not in use helps protect it from the elements and prolongs the lifespan.

HAMMOCKS AND SWINGS

Nothing says “do not disturb” quite like a hammock. The ultimate symbol of leisure, hammocks offer the perfect spot to unwind and beat the heat. Widely available in single and double sizes, they are a cost-effective way to enjoy a little time outdoors, but they’re not for everyone. They aren’t a great choice for little ones, who can find it hard master the art of getting in and out, leaving them open to injury if you aren’t around to help. The same goes for anyone with limited mobility or balance issues, so it’s probably not the seat of choice for the oldies either.

You need to consider a few things before set-up. Hammocks require two sturdy anchor points — trees, poles, fences or walls are all viable options, provided they are secure and can support the weight required. While this limits placement options, a dedicated hammock stand immediately solves that problem. Made of metal or wood, hammock stands provide a stable and secure base and are available in various sizes and designs. They offer the advantage of portability and versatility, letting you set up anywhere — poolside, in the garden, on the patio or even indoors.

FABRIC HAMMOCKS

Fabric hammocks are generally made of cotton, polyester or a blend, and provide a comfy and cosy retreat from the world. The limitless range of available colours and patterns means you can add a vibrant touch to any outdoor space. They should be stored away when not in use or during inclement weather to prolong their lifespan.

ROPE HAMMOCKS

Rope hammocks offer a classic take and traditional appearance but are often made from durable materials like recycled polyester. They should be treated to be fast drying and resistant to UV, mould and mildew. The woven design of rope hammocks allows for better air circulation, making them ideal in hot climates. On the downside, they are prone to branding users with ‘waffle’ imprints, but that’s the price you pay for a little bit of paradise.

GARDEN AND PORCH SWINGS

Garden and porch swings hark back to another era, delivering all the pleasure of swaying in the breeze, minus the awkward process of getting in and out of a hammock. Many styles come with a roof canopy, letting you enjoy the outdoors while protected from the harsh sun — it’s a win-win.

Swings are available in a range of construction materials. Look for solid, well-constructed designs made from wood or stainless steel, as cheaper alternatives and lightweight materials may not offer the strength needed to accommodate two or three people safely and securely.

PLACEMENT AND PRACTICALITIES

There’s no doubt that choosing the right outdoor seating will elevate your al fresco experience. Before making a decision, think about your overall aesthetics and how best to blend in — or stand out, if that’s your aim. If it’s all about entertaining, think about guest numbers and the areas they are most likely to circulate.

Don’t forget to factor in maintenance — it can be a harsh environment out there and some choices may last longer than others but will also tie you to a routine of repairs and upkeep. Make sure you’re up to the task before you commit.

Whatever your requirements, there are choices out there that are perfect for you, designed to fit with your lifestyle and show you home in its best light. Get going now and you’ll be ready to entertain all summer long.

QUICK TIPS

Pool toy safety

Pool toys can provide plenty of fun around the pool, but they also present risk of injury or other harm if they aren’t used and stored properly.

Royal Life Saving Australia recommends parents and other supervising adults follow a few simple steps to ensure that everyone stays safe and that every day of swimming is a fun one.

1 DON’T LEAVE TOYS IN OR AROUND THE POOL

Pool toys like noodles, floaties, dive rings, inflatable rafts, beachballs and kickboards are appealing to kids by design. Brightly coloured and patterned, they will attract the attention of little ones both inside and outside the pool area if left lying or floating around. Removing toys and inflatables from the water and securely storing them out of sight and reach removes the temptation.

2 DON’T BE FOOLED

When kids use inflatable toys, noodles and swimming aids like floaties, it’s easy to think they are more capable swimmers than they really are. Don’t wander off when supervising, stay close and keep an eye on everyone, as even strong swimmers can run into trouble.

3 POOL TOYS AREN’T LIFESAVING DEVICES

Except as a last resort, pool toys shouldn’t be used to reach someone in trouble. Royal Life Saving suggests that pool owners invest in a reach pole or personal flotation device and store it securely near the pool for use in emergency situations.

4 CHECK AGE AND WEIGHT RANGES

Pool toys are sold with recommended age and weight ranges marked on the packaging. Make sure your choices are suitable for your kids, to ensure

they’ll behave as expected — the toys that is, not the kids. But that does bring us to another point — pool toys should only be used as recommended by the manufacturer, to avoid any damage or malfunction that could present a drowning risk.

5 FLOATIES SHOULD FIT

Swim floaties are a great way to build confidence in young swimmers, but they are not safety devices. Royal Life Saving says floaties should have three inflatable chambers and must fit snugly around the child’s arms.

6 DEFLATE WHEN NOT IN USE

Inflatables, including swim floaties, should be deflated when not in use. Rafts, rings, floaties and other inflatables should always be inspected for leaks or damaged valves before use.

Pool toys are fun, but they’re no replacement for active adult supervision. Always keep an eye on the kids in, on and around water.

FRESH FLAVOURS

Celebrate spring with seasonal salad ideas

1 MANGO AND AVOCADO

There’s no better combination than juicy mango and creamy avocado — a true celebration of the Australian tropics. Simply dice up some mango and avocado, then toss in some baby spinach leaves or rocket to add a peppery bite. Drizzle with a zesty lime dressing (2 tablespoons each of lime juice, caster sugar and olive oil, and 1 crushed garlic clove, salt and pepper. Combine in a jar and shake till sugar dissolves). Top with a handful of shredded mint leaves. Serve with grilled prawns, fish or chicken.

As the weather warms up, dining moves outside. Throw some colour on the table with these fresh salad ideas, featuring lively new season fruits and vegetables, that will have your taste buds tingling.

2 ASPARAGUS AND PEA

Embrace the essence of spring with this simple green salad alternative. Blanch fresh asparagus, snow peas and sugar snaps in boiling water for around one and a half minutes. Remove promptly from the heat and run under cold water. Add to a serving bowl and top with crumbled feta cheese and toasted almond slivers. Finish with a light drizzle of lemon vinaigrette (1/3 cup olive oil, ¼ cup lemon juice, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, ½ teaspoon honey, 1 crushed garlic clove. Add all ingredients to a bowl and whisk till combined). Serve with roasted or barbequed lamb or beef.

3 WATERMELON AND FETA

As the temperature rises, a cooling watermelon and feta salad is the go-to option for every gathering. Dice or ball the watermelon and cut feta cheese into cubes or rough chunks. Garnish with fresh basil or mint leaves and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. Try it with grilled pork and chicken kebabs or barbequed salmon steaks.

5 QUINOA, HALOUMI AND POMEGRANATE

4 ROASTED BEETROOT AND GOAT CHEESE

Roasting vibrant beetroot until tender and pairing it with creamy goat cheese elevates these humble ingredients to gourmet heights. Add a handful of baby rocket and a scattering of toasted walnuts for a satisfying crunch. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and white balsamic vinegar. Serve with pork, duck or beef.

A powerhouse of nutrients and flavours, this salad is a refreshing welcome to spring. Cook quinoa as per instructions and combine with pomegranate seeds — also called arils. (Note: If it’s too hard to work with a fresh pomegranate, some stores sell the arils separately. They are also available frozen in supermarkets.) Dry fry or grill haloumi and chop into bite-size pieces. Add to salad, along with chopped cucumber and shredded mint leaves. Top with a splash of olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice and season with salt and pepper.

QUICK

TOP10 TIPS

POOL PREP TIPS FOR SPRING

As the winter chill fades away, it’s time to gear up for spring — and that means ensuring your pool is ready and waiting when the hot days hit. Here are some tips to help prepare for the upcoming season.

1 INSPECTION:

Start by thoroughly inspecting your pool for any signs of damage or wear and tear. Check for cracks, leaks or loose tiles. Addressing these issues early on helps keep everyone safe and can prevent further damage.

2 SAFETY CHECK: Conduct a thorough safety check. Ensure that pool gates and fences are in good working condition and that all safety equipment, such as lifebuoys and ropes, are present and accessible.

3

CLEAN AND CLEAR DEBRIS: Remove leaves, branches and other debris that may have accumulated over the winter. A pool cover will reduce this, but some debris may still get in. Skim the surface and clean out the pump and skimmer baskets.

48 | POOL&SPA Spring 2023 WWW.POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Maria Zamchiy
© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Alfonso de Tomas

4 CLEAN POOL WALLS AND FLOOR: Even if you’ve got an automatic cleaner, it doesn’t hurt to give the pool a bit of a manual scrub. Brush the walls and floor to eliminate any algae or build-up.

5 CHECK AND SERVICE EQUIPMENT: Inspect your pool equipment including the pump, filter and heater. Make sure they are in good working condition and, if needed, have them professionally serviced to ensure peak performance throughout the upcoming season.

6 BALANCE POOL CHEMISTRY:

Proper water chemistry is essential for safe and enjoyable swimming. Take a water sample to your local SPASA member pool store for testing and adjust the pH, alkalinity and chlorine levels accordingly. Balanced chemistry prevents algae growth and ensures the water remains clear.

7 SHOCK THE POOL:

Before the swimming season starts, shock your pool by adding a concentrated dose of chlorine or a non-chlorine shock treatment. This helps eliminate any lingering contaminants and ensures a fresh start to the season.

8 INSPECT AND REPAIR THE POOL COVER:

If you use a pool cover during the winter months, inspect it for damage. Repair or replace it as needed.

9 TRIM NEARBY TREES AND PLANTS:

Trim back trees and plants near the pool area to minimise the likelihood of foliage and debris entering the water.

10 CALL IN A PROFESSIONAL: Hiring a professional to inspect and prepare your pool preseason is a great idea. Your local SPASA member has the expertise to identify potential issues before they happen and can save you time and money in the long run.
