Media converter Yamasaki media converters receive data signals from one media (cable type) and convert these signals to another (cable type) while remaining invisible to traffic and other networking devices.

They are available in managed and unmanaged varieties and can be mains powered, PoE, or USB powered on request.

The converters can be used for: installing new cable segments without replacing entire cable structure; installing new devices without replacing and installing new components; installing new cable types as and when demand requires; extend the distances of networks by adding fibre types; upgrade part of a network as budget allows; and, improve network speed and bandwidth.

Tiny ethernet module The t(P)ET-P2R2/tET-P2R2 is an IP-based tiny ethernet I/O monitoring and control module that can be remotely controlled through a 10/100M ethernet network by using Modbus TCP/UDP protocol. This makes the device suitable for integrating into the HMI, SCADA, PLC and other software systems.

The module contains two channels of photoisolated digital inputs and two channels of form-A power relay outputs and can be used to create a DI to DO pair-connection through the ethernet.

Once the configuration is completed, it polls the status of the local DI channels and then writes to a remote DO device continuously in the background using the Modbus/TCP protocol.

The device features a 32-bit MCU to enable efficient handling of network traffic. It also has a built-in web server that provides an intuitive web management interface to allow users to modify the settings of the module including DHCP/static IP, gateway/mask.

It is designed for ultra-low power consumption offering IEEE 802.3af-compliant power over ethernet using a standard category 5 ethernet. The modules can also accept power input from a terminal block if no PoE is present. The built-in dual watchdog timer (CPU watchdog and host watchdog) ensures continuous operation even in harsh environments and automatically resets the CPU if the built-in firmware is operating abnormally.

The motor and gear units are designed to optimise cost efficiency and performance and to simplify integration and operation.

The units come in four different sizes, including a new extra-large motor (MU400) suitable for high-power applications such as turntables. Vision sensor Omron’s Type FQ Series vision sensor incorporates full-blown image processing capabilities in a palm-size footprint.

Traditionally, smart cameras or photoelectric sensors have been used where low-cost inspections are required, but functionality and performance with these are limited. Rotating chain The igus continually rotating energy chain is a ready-to-install module that features lightweight and reliable chains, with speeds of up to 8 m/s allowing fast machine cycle times to be realised. Ethernet over copper media Comnet has expanded its ethernet over existing copper media product offering with its CopperLine range.

Multiple-channel ethernet extenders, unmanaged ethernet switches and PoE mid-span power injectors are now available to provide a wide variety of solutions for virtually any network application. These products are designed for applications where existing copper media, such as coaxial cable or twisted pair (UTP) are currently installed and provide a cost-effective alternative to installing new media.

CopperLine consists of 1-, 4-, 8- and 16-channel models that utilise coaxial cable or twisted pair. The higher port count models solve density challenges, allowing up to 16 channels to be supported in a one RU high rackmount chassis.

Fire-resistant, fibreoptic breakout cable The Huber+Suhner fire-resistant, fibre-optic cable maintains circuit integrity for up to 180 min in the event of a fire. Tektronix oscilloscope ASICs in the digitisers provide the foundation for high-speed signal acquisition with low noise and high linearity and are based on the IBM 7HP SiGe process.

The low 500 fs RMS integrated jitter of the digitisers results in a 5.5 effective number of bits at 5 GHz. NI technology delivers high-data throughput for faster test execution and precision multimodule timing and synchronisation for building high-channel-count, integrated test systems.

Designed for the 3U PXI Express platform, the digitisers can stream at rates to 700 MBps and synchronise channels on multiple modules to within 160 ps resolution. These capabilities make the digitisers suitable for applications such as automated production test, semiconductor ATE and high-energy physics measurement systems.

The devices work with LabVIEW graphical design software for instrument control and automation, the LabWindows/CVI ANSI C software development environment and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET development tools.

Engineers can program the digitisers using the SCOPE instrument driver or the LabVIEW jitter analysis toolkit, which offers a library of functions optimised for high-throughput, jitter, eye diagram and phase noise measurements.

Cold aisle containment B&R Data Systems’ cold aisle containment can be used to improve cooling efficiency in data centres.

Cold aisle containment is a method of increasing cooling efficiency and reducing power consumption in data centres. Efficiency is increased by keeping the cold and hot air separated. Cold air is fed through a false floor into a contained cold aisle. This air flows through the front of the server racks, removes the heat from installed equipment and is expelled as hot air through the rear of the cabinet. The hot air is then removed by the data centre air-conditioning system.

Using the company’s cold aisle containment method, the area requiring cooling is much smaller and therefore less power is required to keep it at the recommended temperature. This allows the use of existing cooling capacity within the data centre and, at the same time, improves cooling efficiency.

The method’s benefits include: avoids hot air short-circuits; reduces the volume of air needing to be cooled; improves efficiency of the cooling system; and lower energy costs.

Airflow containment system The Hoffman Proline containment system is designed to segregate cold (intake) and hot (exhaust) air to improve data centre cooling efficiency.

The TopTherm fan-and-filter units use diagonal fan technology for better air throughput resulting in improved ventilation in enclosures and housings. This technology creates radial and axial ventilation, which means that the air outlet direction is not in the fan’s axial direction but diagonally to the outside.

This favours an even distribution of air in the enclosure and avoids the formation of hot spots, claimed to result in 43% less energy consumption.

In addition to the flat design, the key benefits are the steeper curve and the higher pressure saddle. The higher pressure stability, when installed and under operating conditions, provides a higher and more constant airflow over a wide area. This increases the operating life for the filter mats without any loss of power.

With tool-free assembly, the units can be simply mounted and the airflow direction can be quickly changed. Electrical connections and maintenance, including filter mat replacement, can be conducted easily. During installation, the snap-on mounting system allows the easy insertion of the fan-and-filter units into the prepared mounting cut-outs.

The dimensions of the mounting cut-outs are identical with those of previous models. Springtype terminals, into which the wires or conductor sleeves are inserted, replace conventional screw terminals when making electrical connections.

Fluke has launched TL175 TwistGuard test leads with a manually adjustable test tip guard for use in changing measurement situations.

The user can change the exposed probe tip length from 4/25 inch (4 mm) to ¾ inch (19 mm) by twisting the test lead. When the tip guard is fully extended, the TL175 test leads are safety rated for CAT III 1000 V and CAT IV 600 V use. When the tip guard is retracted, the test leads are safety rated for CAT II 1000 V use.

Each test lead is covered by two layers of silicone insulation, red or black on the outside and white on the inside. If the TL175 test leads become nicked or scuffed and white insulation is visible, the user has a visual warning that the test leads should be replaced.

The dual-layer silicone insulation resists melting if it comes in contact with hot surfaces and remains flexible in cold situations.

GR14q is the result of cooperation between BJB and Philips with the aim of developing a base lamp holder for compact fluorescent lamps, with increased energy efficiency, which will improve the design and make lamps easier to handle.

Lightning current and surge arresters Dehn + Sohne’s Blitzductor XTU arresters are combined lightning current and surge arresters for protecting information and automation systems. The nominal voltage is not specified, but the arrester can be used for all voltages in the range of 0-180 VDC. Blitzductor XTU’s actiVsense technology allows the arrester to automatically detect the signal voltage of the information signal and adapt its protection behaviour to this voltage. PAC power supply modules Advantech has released two PAC power supply modules with 72 W output power for their APAX series. The APAX-5343 and -5343E have passed Energy Star compliance and provide a power transmission efficiency of over 88% from AC input to DC output, providing power for more APAX modules.

The APAX-5343 and -5343E have also passed UL 508 certification showing that they are suitable for safe operation in industrial environments. In order to protect the devices from overloading, voltage spikes and short-circuits, they include an auto-recovery mode which ensures that the APAX power supply will continue to work normally.

The APAX-5343 is designed for APAX-5570 controller series, and the APAX5343E is for APAX expansion modules, such as APAX-5520 compact controllers, APAX-5070 coupler series and relative APAX I/O series.

I/O module for safety applications The I/O module in the Lumberg automation range is designed specifically for the decentralised Fieldbus system LioN-Link.

The module is IP67 compliant and has four digital M12 slots with a higher limit on the output voltage, permitting 2 A per line and 6 A in total. Power quality analyser The 434/PWR power quality analyser can be used to conduct energy consumption studies and electrical load analysis, and to perform power quality logging and analysis surveys. The instrument helps electricians, field service engineers and maintenance technicians uncover energy waste in commercial and factory buildings as well as in equipment and machines.

It can also help technicians demonstrate the benefits of efficiency improvements by testing energy consumption.

The analyser measures harmonic distortion caused by electronic loads and analyses reliability problems by capturing voltage dips and swells from load switching. The input power line conditioner 44LS1 from North Atlantic Industries is suitable for rugged land, sea and air applications. The conditioner protects downstream DC-DC converters from MIL-STD-704A-F and MIL-STD-1275 transients, including high- and low-voltage transients as well as power interruptions lasting up to 50 ms. In addition, the 44LS1 provides reverse polarity protection for downstream electronics.

The conditioner is designed to meet standard 3U cPCI mechanical requirements, while also providing the added capability of meeting strict input power requirements. Open Collector Signals monitor the holdup capacitor’s internal storage energy, input voltage and output status. The internal storage can support 100 W load for 50 ms. Precision power analyser The Yokogawa WT1800 precision power analyser is the latest addition to the company’s range of digital power measuring instruments.

Replacing the WT1600, an industry standard for many years, the WT1800 offers innovative measurement functions which benefit engineers with electrical power and efficiency measurements in a range of industries from inverter and drive design to alternative energy systems.

Microhmmeter The MOM2 handheld microhmmeter can be used to measure the resistance of circuit breaker contacts, bus bars, connections and other links conducting high currents.

The instrument weighs approx 1 kg and, despite its small size and light weight, can deliver a maximum current of about 220 A short duration and up to 100 A for 3 s.

With the instrument, it is possible to make the test according to the DualGround method. This means that the test object remains grounded on both sides throughout the entire measurement procedure. The rugged instrument is suitable for field work, such as in substations, and is supplied with a strong rubber holster accessory.

ATEX-approved mass flow meters/ controllers Alicat Scientific’s ATEX-approved mass flow meters and mass flow controllers are approved for hazardous environment (-X) option and are designed to be used in environments where ignitable gases are present.

The -X option can be added to any of the company’s family of flow and pressure products. The ATEX-approved device shares almost all of the standard features of the company’s flow and pressure product, omitting only the power jack and 8-pin mini din. They are replaced by the locking 6-pin industrial connector.

Its digital display allows users to monitor flow, temperature and pressure data in real time. The display also allows the user to make functional changes to the unit like changing the measured gas, setpoint control and taring without the need for digital communication or special software.

As the device consumes very little power, it passed the ATEX approval process with the display intact. This allows users of this device in hazardous environments the flexibility of having an onboard display for quick visual verification of mass flow meter or mass flow controller operation.
