est Vancouver is blessed with many green spaces containing streams, creeks and rivers which form natural wildlife corridors that extend into residential areas; hence, we live in black bear country, and we all need to know how to react if we encounter these beautiful and fascinating creatures.

Remember, black bears are wild. So use the four S’s: • Stay calm • Stand still - Do Not Run! • Speak calmly • Slowly back away Elspeth Bradbury, in her Mountains to Sea article on page 15, writes about the progress that the North Shore Black Bear Society has made in educating us on living beside our wild neighbours.
