DECA Store Expansion It has been over a year in the making, and has taken the time and talents of students, teachers and community members to make it a reality. “The Colosseum,” the newly renovated and expanded DECA store located in the Main Lobby at Westside is now open for business. The new store has a storage room, conference room, checkout counter and plenty of space to display merchandise. These improvements were generously funded by Helen & Dick Kelley and the Volberding Family; while furnishings were donated by All Makes Office Equipment Co.

Early Childhood Education

The Westside Foundation supports the Westside Early Childhood Program that provides a safe, engaging educational environment for children ages 18 months through sixth grade. The program offers developmentally appropriate opportunities for children to grow and develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically with the support and guidance of competent and compassionate adults.

Enrollment

When a model was needed for a new book about early childhood education, UNO Assistant Professor Susan McWilliams went to Oakdale. Here, she found everything she needed and more. In fact, she stopped the presses and re-wrote parts of her soon-to-be-published text, based on what she saw and learned from watching our program in action. Dr. McWilliams specializes in effective teaching and learning involving literature-based stories in preschool settings. Her book will be titled: “Story Retelling for Early Language and Literacy Learning.”

The teaching model used at Oakdale is used at every one of our preschool programs. All of our programs seek to meet the highest quality standards in the state. The Westside Foundation oversees toddler, preschool and four-year-old classes throughout district 66. We also support before and after care for all of our elementary students in all 10 of our elementary schools.

In addition, we are proud to partner with the Buffett Early Childhood Institute in the search for strategies to support our youngest learners. Through programming like Family Focus Groups, Book Bag Exchange and Home Visits, together the goal is to get children and families engaged in “school” activities and provide support and practical strategies for parents to use outside of school.

Omaha Gives!

Thank you for “Giving A Little Bit� and supporting the Westside Foundation through Omaha Gives! on May 20th, 2015. With the support of 202 online donors we raised $31,112 for the students in Westside Community Schools. In conjunction with Omaha Gives! the Westside Foundation held our first annual Staff Campaign, Together Employees Add More.

Each staff member was asked to donate through Omaha Gives!, cash or payroll deduction. We were thrilled to raise over $5000 with 250 new Staff donors! Together the campaigns raised over $36,000 through donations from more than 450 supporters of The Westside Foundation. We look forward to Omaha Gives! 2016 on May 25th.

Grants During 2015 the Foundation gave $25,000 in grants to support educational programs in the District. These grants include reading intervention, MakerSpace & Tinker Lab development and a pedometer project to encourage a healthier and more active lifestyle.

The Foundation supports these, and other projects throughout the District that would otherwise not be funded by the General Fund Budget.

Ozobots in Digital Media & Literacy Eighth grade students are introduced to computer programming through Ozobots. These powerful tiny robots expand STEM and computer science learning through game-based learning and digital apps. An Ozobot understands a color-coded language that is designed by the student using colored markers provided with the robot.

Light Up Greeting Cards and Sewable Circuits Students at Loveland and Westgate used copper tape, LEDs and batteries to make light-up greeting cards. While older students used sewable micro-controllers with conductive thread and LEDs to create “smart” textiles in the form of bags and masks. These activities introduced students to the engineering design process, while also exposing them to circuitry, innovative problem solving and artistry.

Gamification in AP Chemistry and Honors Chemistry Gamification in education is the concept of using the competition of games to motivate and engage students to accomplish learning objectives. Students use online games and apps that supplement the chemistry curriculum. Instead of homework, these activities become “quests” that need to be completed to win the “game.”

Students choose the activities and complete work to earn points and rewards, all in an effort to implement innovative learning opportunities and a personalized learning experience.

SkillsUSA Students from WHS represented the State of Nebraska at the 50th SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference as competitors in Actions Skills & Welding Arts. This program helps students discover their career goals through technical, skilled and service occupation instructional programs in public high schools.

VI VI 2015 VI VI 2015 raised $175,000 for Westside Community Schools, exceeding our goal to raise $25 per student for the 6,000 students in District 66. These funds will go directly toward innovative educational opportunities in every school—building on the strong fundamental foundation by integrating new methods or technologies to further enhance the educational experience for every student.

The Westside Foundation provides student scholarships, teacher recognition, classroom grants, facilities improvement, and support for Westside Community Schools when tax dollars are not available. Supporters and donors include alumni, district residents, businesses, teachers, staff, parents and friends—most from within district boundaries and the metropolitan area but many from across the state, and around the nation too.
