Post Secondary Students

We are pleased to offer our youth rate to post secondary students 19 Years and up. To enjoy this rate, please ensure you have your enrolment verification as proof of current attendance or a valid student card. If neither are provided, regular admission will apply.

Replacement cards may be purchased for $5 (+Tax). We are unable to call other Recreation Centres to verify LIFE and Regional Passes.

Payment Plans

The Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) Plans provide an opportunity to make equal monthly payments for WSPR Annual Passes, L.I.F.E. Annual Passes, Family 6 Month, and Regional Annual Passes. Payment plans require a non-refundable $25 administration fee. Payments are made by authorizing automatic transfer of payments from a chequing account at a Canadian bank or charged to a valid credit card. All dishonoured payments (bank or credit card) are subject to a $25 service charge.

To book a WSPR room, arenas, fields, facilities and evening/weekend use of School District #62 (Sooke) gyms, classrooms and fields follow these steps.

Pool Bookings

Completing a Booking Upon receipt of the completed ‘request for use form,’ our Bookings Department will process the request, and contact you when a Rental Contract has been prepared. It is not a confirmed booking until a contract is signed and payment is made.

Cancellation Policy To be eligible for a full refund, the cancellation of a facility booking must be received, in writing, 30 days in advance of the booked time.

Located in the lower park at West Shore Parks & Recreation, the JDF Par 3 golf course consists of nine beautifully manicured holes.

With yardage ranging from 79 to 170 and seven water hazards, this course is ideal for both the beginner and the experienced player. This course will only take a short commitment of time and is conveniently located only 20 minutes from downtown.

Our preschool levels will enable your children to have successful experiences at the pool. Our instructors offer a balanced swim program that allows children to learn alongside their peers in a fun and encouraging environment. Occasionally, classes may be overbooked due to special circumstances or if a child requires a support worker. Whenever possible we will have a volunteer assistant with these classes.

Looking for pool, fitness, skating and indoor sport complex schedules and drop-in classes.

Diaper Dive

To complete this program parent and tots will be comfortable entering and exiting the pool safely. Bubble blowing, front and back floats and submersions will be taught through creative games and songs. Parent participation is required.

Little Learners

To complete, swimmers will be comfortable floating on their fronts and backs independently. Swimmers must comfortably perform jumps, bobs and rollover floats.

Parent participation is required.

Twos in Training

This level is designed to get children introduced to structured swimming lessons. To complete, children must be confident blowing bubbles, submerging and doing assisted front floats and kicks. Full parent participation is required.

Terrific Twos

This level is designed for swimmers to start participating independently. To complete, children must eventually be comfortable without in-water parent support and must be comfortable trying assisted floats, glides, kicks and games using a variety of equipment with the instructor. Partial parent participation is required.

This level is designed for swimmers who are comfortable submerging and blowing bubbles without parents. To complete, children must be confident using equipment to do floats and glides in shallow water and be comfortable performing skills off the tot docks in deeper water.

For 3 to 5 year old beginners! To move on to Orange Jellyfish, children will be comfortable submerging. They will perform assisted front and back floats and glides.

Independent front and back glides are the focus here! Children will be confident gliding and kicking independently on their fronts and backs before moving on to Red Snapper.

Front and back swims are developed and children are introduced to deep-water. Children will be skilled doing front swims with big arms and back swims. Recovery to the pool edge and comfort swimming in the big pool is required to advance to Maroon Starfish.

Students will refine their front and back swims and continue to work on confidence building in the big pool. To complete, Maroon Starfish swimmers must to be competent performing side glides, change of direction and deep water skills. Blue Dolphin swimmers will demonstrate basic front crawl and back swims with shoulder rolls.

School Age Swimming Lessons Red Cross SwimKids Program

Designed for children 5-13 years. We teach more than swimming skills and encourage kids to strive for and reach their personal bests. Our instructors offer a balanced program of swimming and water safety skills that allow youth to learn alongside peers in a fun, encouraging environment. Occasionally, classes may be overbooked due to special circumstances or if a child requires a support worker. Whenever possible we will have a volunteer assistant with these classes.

For school age beginners! To complete this level, children will be comfortable floating on their front and back. Glides with kicks will also be mastered.

Confidence performing front and back swims will determine advancement to Level 3. Children will be comfortable performing deep water activities.

Front crawl is the focus of this level. Diving, change of direction and treading water are also introduced in this level.

Front crawl, back glides and shoulder rolls are developed. Students must complete a 25 metre endurance swim to move on to Level 5.

Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling and whip kick on the back. Stride dives are taught and endurance is increased to 50 metres.

Work continues on front and back crawl. Elementary backstroke is introduced, endurance increases to 150 metres and basic rescue skills are taught.

Eggbeater, Breast Stroke and Side Stroke are introduced and all strokes are refined. The dangers of water and making wise choices are discussed. Distance swims gradually increase from 300 to 500 metres.

The path to working at the Juan de Fuca Pool has two streams – Swim Instructor and Lifeguard. We may hire swim instructors with only the WSI certification but to lifeguard you must have completed both WSI and NL. Each have prerequisites; more information can be found at their respective pages (page 13 and 35). Lifeguarding courses that start in January lead into our summer hiring in May. See next page for timeline.

One of our experienced instructors will be happy to help. Our private lessons will improve confidence, swimming skills and stroke techniques.

• All private lesson options can be booked as a semi-private lesson.

Semi-private lessons cost an additional $15 per class, and have a maximum of 2 people.

You can register in person, by phone, or online. Please be sure to select the correct fee (private or semi-private) when registering online.

• Progress cards are issued at the end of all Private Lesson Sets and MiniSets, and may be issued for Single Private Lessons if the required skills are demonstrated within the lesson.

• We are unable to re-book or refund missed lessons; however please feel free to send a sibling, cousin or friend in place of the registered participant.

Skating Programs 2 Years & Up SKATING LESSONS Described as an early specialization sport, learning to skate is the first step in developing the next hockey player or figure skater. Our experienced instructors develop engaging lesson plans that help your child develop the necessary skills of skating.

These skills will improve your child’s physical literacy and help to develop other sport specific and fundamental movement skills.

The Greater Victoria Active Communities Learn to Skate Program is a regional initiative of seven municipalities of Greater Victoria. This program is streamlined and designed so that any pre-school or school age child can have their accomplishments transferred from one center to another.

This is a badge incentive program that emphasizes the importance of comprehensive feedback through a report card. Our Skate Team Leader is on the ice during all lesson times and can answer questions regarding lessons and your child’s skating progress.

Children learn v-pushes, one foot gliding, two foot jump while gliding, walking backwards with some glide, two foot quarter-turns and stopping.

Skating Lessons HOCKEY School Age – Learn to Skate

A class for children with very little or no skating experience. Learn the basics of ice safety and to stand and walk by themselves in an encouraging environment.

This class is for children who can skate independently on the ice. Skills include: forward sculling, one foot forward glides, stopping, walking backwards with some glide, and two foot half turns on the spot.

Skills children will learn include: one foot glides on a curve, forwards walking cross cuts, backwards skating and sculling, two foot backwards glide to one foot, and snow plow stop.

Children will learn: two foot stop, forwards crosscuts, turning forwards to backwards, backwards to forwards, and two foot jump in a glide backwards.

Children learn backwards mohawk turn, two foot stop in both directions, one foot jump gliding forward, fast backwards start and fast forward start from back stop.

This introductory hockey program is designed for participants with some skating experience and little or no hockey experience. Our NCCP trained instructors will develop fun focused lesson plans that will develop skating skills and educated participants about hockey. Full gear is mandatory.

Learn to Play Sledge Hockey

For those with pottery experience who are comfortable working independently in the studio. An attendant will be on duty but instruction is not provided. Only clay purchased at, and items created in our studio can be fired in our kiln. Orientation is required for new studio users.

Smoke Firing Workshop

Experiment with this unique finishing technique. Construct hand-built and thrown forms during the first class. Then, trim and burnish these pieces during studio dropin. In the second class, bisque-fired pieces will be loaded into cans with combustible materials and smoke fired outdoors.

These weekly dances are geared towards people living with disabilities. Refreshments (soft drinks, juice, cookies and coffee) are on sale each week. If you are a caregiver, we ask that you do not drop off your client at the door and leave them on their own.

Cardiovascular Fitness Evaluation (30 minutes)

Aerobic fitness is evaluated based on your age and gender to measure the combined efficiency of your heart, lungs and bloodstream in getting oxygen to your muscles and putting it to work.

Active Rehabilitation

Active exercise therapy programs are specifically designed to stretch, strengthen and regain functionality of the affected body parts to help you recapture your quality of life.

Water Rehabilitation

Water exercise therapy programs are beneficial in reducing pain & discomfort, promoting earlier recovery, increasing range of motion, improving muscle conditioning & decreasing impact on joints.

Active & Water Rehabilitation

Cost: $52/session PLEASE NOTE: Rehabilitation appointments require payment in full prior to booking. An assessment & written medical referral are required before participation.

Athletic Therapy

Certified Athletic Therapist uses rehabilitation techniques such as therapeutic modalities, soft tissue mobilization and exercise prescription to promote optimal healing to prepare for safe reintegration into an active lifestyle.

Aqua Therapy

This water therapy class is for people graduating from one-on-one rehabilitation sessions or those who require the support and guidance of the Exercise Rehabilitation Specialist. 2020 L.I.F.E Program L.I.F.E. assists individuals and families with low incomes to access recreation services and programs at all municipal recreation centres in Greater Victoria. The L.I.F.E. Program is designed for individuals and families in the Westshore whose combined gross household income must be at or below Statistic Canada’s estimated low income thresholds for 2019. Post-secondary students are not eligible.

• Create your account to view and register for our exciting programs.

• Registration commences at 6:00 am, December 5th online, in person at JDF Recreation Centre (1767 Island Highway), or by phone at 250-478-8384.

• Please have your VISA, MasterCard or American Express credit card ready.

Register in-person or by phone-in registration during JDF Recreation Centre hours • Stop by the reception desk at JDF Recreation Centre OR call 250-478-8384 (press ‘0’ to speak to reception staff ).

Registration and access to drop-in facilities closes 30 minutes prior to facility hours, please see page 1.

PLEASE NOTE : If applicable, taxes will be applied to registered programs and passes.

CREDITS & REFUNDS PROGRAMS

Full credits or refunds will be processed by contacting reception a minimum of 7 DAYS for Pro-D Day, Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer Camps and 3 DAYS for all other courses prior to program start date (less supply costs). Full credits or refunds are issued when West Shore Parks & Recreation cancels a program or when a program is not convenient due to course changes. Every effort is made to cancel in a timely manner (3 to 5 days prior to course start date).

Year Long Preschool and Out of School Care: Please refer to Parent Handbooks for program specific cancellation policies.

PASSES

Passes are non-transferable and a $5 replacement card fee applies if lost or stolen. Credits and refunds are not available for promotional or Regional Passes. A one-time extension is granted for leaves exceeding 30 days. Leaves less than 30 days may be granted for medical reasons (with doctor’s note). Extensions apply only to 6 Month, Annual Family and Annual Passes for WSPR and do not apply to the Regional Annual Pass.

Credits are valid for one (1) year from the date of issue. For refunds, payments made by Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Debit will be credited to your credit/ debit card (some restrictions apply). All other refunds are refunded by cheque and processed within 10 working days. Prorated refunds may be granted at the discretion of the Program Coordinator for medical reasons (with doctor’s note), relocation outside of Victoria, course withdrawals requested after the first lesson and from date of request for passes. A $25 fee may apply to NSF cheques, and credit card or electronic fund transfer rejections.
