Opening Bascule Bridge The iconic opening pedestrian and cycle bridge forms a recognisable gateway for the region. The elegant design is the result of performance, the masts and booms of the mobile span are sculpted to reflect their function as a pivoting element, with functional elements such as counterweights fully expressed as part of the form.

Cowley Pedestrian & Cycle Bridge Oxford City Council is developing plans to reopen passenger services to the Cowley Branch Line in Oxford. This would be a catalyst for creating wider connectivity in the local area, with the bridge being an important addition. The proposed new pedestrian and cycle bridge provides connectivity between services, communities and facilities to the south and north of the line, as well as the station platform of the proposed new Oxford Cowley Station. Our design employs an innovative low-carbon solution by using a laminated timber deck; if constructed, it would be the first to ever be in place over a UK railway. With complex land ownership issues, site constraints and inclusivity aspirations at the forefront, the design results in an elegant curving shape, supported on V shaped piers. Gentle approach ramps would make it easy for cyclists and wheelchair users to access the bridge. Pedestrians would have access via separate stairs on both sides of the bridge. Sustainability is at the heart of the design, with active travel encouraged alongside the use of sustainable materials. This is combined with carefully placed piers which touch the ground lightly to minimise the ecological impact of the bridge.

Curzon Approach Bridges & Viaducts The Curzon Street No.3 Viaduct is a multi-span structure through Birmingham’s East side development area on immediate approach to Curzon Street station. The proposed structure is approximately 300m long, with a width varying from 21-65m and a height from ground level to soffit varying from 5-6m. The driving ambition has been maximising the usable and flexible public spaces under the structure. V-piers were developed to reduce the footprint at ground level with their form articulated to reduce their perceived visual mass. As the viaduct crosses over Lawley Middleway, the V-piers are rotated to reduce the span of the three variable height girders whilst maintaining the V form ethos. The special moments along the viaduct change only one element at a time to avoid the structure seeming overly fragmented or disjointed. At Digbeth Canal the design celebrates the moment of intersection between this new 21st Century piece of infrastructure and its 19th Century counterpart. The V-piers are replaced by inverted steel tripod piers referencing the heritage of canal-side cranes, whilst the underdeck structure and parapet remain consistent.

Sázavou and Sázavka HSR Bridges The two new railway bridges over the Sázava and Sázavka waterways form part of the new high-speed line through the Czech Republic.
Both bridges use the principle of a pair of arches at different levels, where the primary arches span the crossed obstacles and the secondary arches fill the space between the primary arches. This system creates the visual impression of elegant, tree-like structures arranged across the valley, fitting the structures sensitively fit into the existing landscape. The curved centerline of the arches is designed to efficiently transfer both the vertical loads (from permanent and variable loads caused by railway operation) and the significant horizontal forces (braking and acceleration forces). The functionality of the system during temperature changes is ensured by the flexibility of the supports of the outer arches. The proposed bridge structures represent an efficient structural solution tailored to the specific context.

Velké Mezirící Bridge
Most VRT ve Velké Mezirící is a proposed high-speed rail bridge over the Oslavu watercourse and road network with a length of 350m and height of 42m. The design was developed using an ‘engineering-first‘ approach to discover an economical, environmentally sensitive, easy to maintain, and simple to construct bridge structure suited to the specifics of the site. The resulting configuration, comprising of a series of ‘V‘ shaped piers supporting a simple deck, not only forms a highly efficient structure but creates an elegant and memorable silhouette within the valley context. The bridge has carefully been designed to respect the constraints on site, which include the industrial area, River and road networks. Piers have been spaced to create sufficient offsets to these elements, allowing the bridge to be constructed without disrupting access or impacting established elements of the landscape.

River Cole Viaducts
The River Cole Viaducts are a pair of low-level viaducts which carry HS2 track over a sensitive rural flood plain. The poor ground conditions limit the plant and equipment used in construction, we developed a steel box girder solution that allowed for 35m spans, much larger than can typically be achieved by prestressed precast RC beams while significantly reducing the weight of the elements. Our design vision integrates HS2 into the landscape by creating a harmonic relationship between the new railway, the site and wider landscape through local connectivity, habitat creation and biodiversity, landscape integration and flood risk mitigation. In the past the River Cole was used for pleasure boating by the Edwardians and though the arrival of HS2 the area will once again promote travel across this landscape including the installation of new footpaths and cycle ways for local people to use.

The Water Orton Viaducts are a pair of single track viaducts carrying the HS2 track over existing road and rail infrastructure. We designed a series of bespoke straddle bents to traverse this incorporating weathering steel beams which act as portals allowing the infrastructure to pass directly under. The viaducts are over 20m tall at their high point and were designed as the most narrow and slender structures possible, with large 45m spans to reduce the number of piers. This minimises the locations where the structure touches the ground, improves sustainability performance and creates opportunities for new green spaces and community amenities.

Spanning the banks of the River Irwell, the design creates a new pedestrian connection between Salford Meadows and the historic Crescent Conservation Area. With a highly urban context on one approach, and a natural context on the other, the bridge acts as a mediator between the two conditions, responding to its setting to create an iconic visible landmark which belongs inherently to its setting.

Low Carbon Footbridge Our bridge design delivers an inclusive, open and secure route for pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrian users – featuring a gently sloping ramp, generous 4.5m width, and clear sightlines to inspire confidence for all. By ‘shrink-wrapping’ the brief into a lightweight, highly efficient structural form with minimal foundations and low-carbon materials, we’ve created a sustainable crossing that balances environmental responsibility with user-friendly design.

Kiln Lane Pedestrian & Cycle Bridge The Ely Area Capacity Enhancement programme delivers safer, more reliable rail travel by replacing level crossings with thoughtfully designed pedestrian bridges that enhance community access and respect the sensitive local landscape. Our context-driven bridges not only improve connectivity and support economic growth but also create new opportunities for residents to engage with the scenic environment, leaving a lasting positive legacy. The Kiln Lane bridge, is a 300m long footbridge through a Site of Specific Scientific. We worked closely with the local residents to develop three options for the bridge that celebrates the local landscape. Each option has a distinctive alignment that takes the user over the electrified railway track, highlighting views of the local Ely Cathedral and the surrounding landscape, as well as tying into existing footpaths, and right’s of way.

Irish War Memorial Gardens Bridge The new commemorative bridge at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens in Dublin is the first step in realising an important new crossing point, linking sections of Dublin’s walking, cycling and military trails across the river Liffey. The new bridge will link the north and south banks of the river at the location first proposed by sir Edwin Lutyens who designed the garden in memory of the 49,400 Irish soldiers who gave their lives in the Great War. Our design is a clever three girder cantilever design giving a view through the bridge structure to the river below while also providing a place for pause and reflection before entering the Memorial garden.
