Barcelona Airport Terminal 1 Satellite As a gateway to Spain and the city of Barcelona, Terminal 1 required an iconic building creating a memorable and uplifting experience for passengers. At the centre of terminal is a vibrant public plaza with a mix of shops, food and beverage outlets and a VIP lounge. Elegant long span roof beams inspired by Gaudi, create uninterrupted areas of floor space and a fully glazed façade provides views over the airfield. We focused on one shared departure level instead of two allowing us to reduce the built floor area and vertical circulation, delivering a cost-effective solutions and providing full retail exposure to optimise commercial revenue potential. This layout optimised the Airport’s efficiency in terms of aircraft, passenger and baggage movements. The building is designed to avoid the need for artificial lighting of public areas in daylight hours, supported by passive measures to reduce solar heat gain and the use of renewable energy sources, and is designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Stansted Airport Satellite 2 Modernisation Our design transformed the existing Satellite 2 delivering a muchimproved passenger experience, responding to the client’s strategic objectives to become a Net Zero Carbon business by 2038. Focused on restoring the original design intent and creating a simpler, more efficient plan we consolidated gate seating areas into a single departures level with arrivals facilities below, using daylight and a airfield views to aide passenger orientation. Finally flexible boarding gates allow the airport operators to utilise spare gate capacity and serve larger aircraft. Retail and food/beverage are relocated to the centre of the departure floor plan, creating an additional 450sqm of lettable floor space that is clearly visible from all boarding gate areas, maximising commercial return. Commercial areas are flexible so they can adapt to future demands and requirements.

Sofia Airport Expansion Sofia Airport’s expansion is a project of national importance, and will deliver an iconic new terminal building and a gateway to Bulgaria. Designed for 2.6mppa and handling 4mppa in 2018 a clear expansion plan was required along with modernisation of both Terminal 1 and 2. Our strategy for the Airport’s growth is adaptable, it addresses the immediate operational and retail /commercial issues while providing a highly flexible space to accommodate future changes of requirements, demand and new technologies. We incorporated a short-term asset improvement programme for Terminal 1 to extend its design life at minimal cost until replacement facilities are constructed in Terminal 2. Terminal 2 will expand to the east and west in incremental phases and with a new façade and roof will create an iconic terminal appearance. Initial masterplan proposals were developed including a cargo/logistics terminal, airport city and wider aerotropolis commercial development on airport land, creating new non-aeronautical revenue streams, alongside a metro station and bus interchange.

Toronto Pearson Airport Regional Transit Centre The vision for the Airport’s future expansion transforms Canada’s largest and busiest airport into a global mega hub, making connections from North America to the rest of the world. Careful restructuring of the existing terminal facilities and the creation of a convenient connected hub at the Airport’s core delivers an integrated aviation transport hub and improved passenger experience. A growth plan of this size required major capital investment. We demonstrated how the extremities of the site could support integrated commercial development, bringing new revenue streams and creating meaningful places in what is currently underutilised land. The Regional Transit Centre is a key part of the Airport’s vision to decrease the dominance of car travel to the airport. Combining rail, light rail, bus, cycle and pedestrian access alongside cars, the Regional Transit Centre will reduce congestion and car travel and the associated carbon emissions, promoting sustainable travel.

Forrestfield Airport Link

Forrestfield-Airport Link connects the Eastern suburbs of Perth and the Airport, with three new stations at Redcliffe, High Wycombe, and Airport Central, all designed to reflect their local environment, and provide a modern, effective transportation system. Airport Central station will be a new gateway to Western Australia, and the design celebrates the experience of departures and arrivals. We integrated Indigenous Noongar artist work into the station to welcome passengers and create a unique sense of place. The station features large volume spaces to create an uplifting and memorable passenger experience. Voids between the levels provide clear sight lines from the station concourse to the platform, enhancing intuitive wayfinding. The design was conceived to minimise energy use through passive measures: the roof incorporates natural light reducing the need for artificial lighting, roof insulation, large overhanging eaves, and frosted glass rooflights minimise direct solar heat gain. LED lighting is powered by photovoltaic panels providing a renewable energy source. Locally manufactured steel and Kimberley Stone were used to reduce transportation costs and embodied energy. The design achieved an Excellent rating under the Infrastructure Council of Australia. Infrastructure Sustainability scheme.

London City Airport DLR Station & Terminal Link The extension of the DLR line from Canning Town to London City Airport creates direct links to the City and opens up the airport to new users. The London City Airport DLR station allows a seamless connection to the airport terminal. The station at London City Airport has a direct covered connection with the adjacent airport terminal building via a fully encompassing glazed roof, providing natural lighting of the central platform. The station has a heated waiting room and incorporates escalators and lifts down to the concourse, which leads directly to the terminal’s check-in and “meeters and greeters” areas. Following the completion of the station and growth in passenger numbers predicted at the airport we explored the viability of creating a new northern platform and link bridge between the DLR station and the terminal building. The new route will create a direct link for passengers travelling to the airport from Central London, who have already checked in and have carry-on luggage only, to offer the most direct rail-air connection in the world.

Project HEART (Hydrogen-Electric Automated Regional Transport) represents the first real steps in de-carbonising domestic aviation. Working with a consortium of industry experts we are looking to construct and operate what would be the worlds first zero emission 19 seater commercial air service, including dedicated green hydrogen infrastructure by 2028. Our concept design for the HEART Terminal is driven by 3 pillars: Environmentally sustainable, Economic and Inclusive. Our proposal for the terminal and infrastructure requirements is a modular, scalable, and deployable timber structure, which uses a form-active folded roof geometry to minimise the number of columns. The form enables natural ventilation, improved acoustics, and open views towards the airfield and provides a step-change in low-carbon design as well as a high quality passenger experience.

Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft represent an exciting new form of zero-emission mobility that will help better connect people in cities and regions. We developed a site-agnostic vertiport that supports the unique requirements of the aircraft. The design prioritises users, providing a high-quality passenger experience thsat is compact and efficient to both build and operate. The vertiport form is generated from the geometry of the ‘Final Approach and Take Off’ area. The sweeping inner curve forms a building that provides exceptional views of the airfield and directs passenger flows seamlessly. The building is designed to be deployed across different sites at different scales and configurations, whilst retaining the same architectural identity, important in establishing a recognisable brand for an entirely new mobility network. As a new form of sustainable transport, it is important that vertiports are adaptable and employ circularity principles. Our lightweight and configurable modular approach maximises standardisation whilst allowing vertiports to be easily expanded or relocated as the market matures. The compact footprint of our design not only reduces costs but also the use of materials and associated embodied carbon.
