CHAMBER LEADERSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor excellence in local business at the 2017 Annual Business Meeting and Chamber Awards Luncheon on October 12.

The signature event is held each fall to recognize the organization’s leadership, highlight past year achievements, and review the goals for the upcoming year. In addition to the brief business meeting, an awards ceremony will be held to recognize and honor the 2017 award recipients.

Nominations, submitted by fellow members, were collected during the months of May, June and July. A 10member panel of judges independently read each nomination summary and rated each candidate.

Scores were calculated to determine the award recipient in each category.

Recipients will be honored in a special awards ceremony during the luncheon event that includes a video presentation; and each recipient will receive a handsome engraved plaque.

DAN FLICKINGER OF WESTMORELAND SPORTS NETWORK Meet our Member Spotlight for September: Dan Flickinger, owner of Westmoreland Sports Network.

This fall, The Westmoreland Sports Network will enter its eighth year of broadcasting Westmoreland County high school sports and Seton Hill University sports. The online network provides unique coverage of the many talented student-athletes in Westmoreland County through live, professionally streamed game broadcasts which fans can watch or listen to on www.westmorelandsports.com. WSN also offers written content, plus team rosters and schedules on their website throughout the school year.

As owner of Westmoreland Sports Network, Dan does anything and everything including announcing, producing and sales. He finds it incredibly rewarding to offer this service to families in Westmoreland County. “We

hear often from parents, grandparents and other family members how much they appreciate us promoting their kids,” he explains. “In particular, there are often times where family members can't make it to games, whether they are working or live out of the area. They tell us by tuning in to our broadcasts it helps keep them connected to their kids. I can't begin to tell you how rewarding it is to hear that we can bring that to people.”

What does Dan enjoy most about his Chamber membership? “Being a lifelong Westmoreland County resident, I take a lot of pride in bringing exposure to the communities in our county through our network. With our membership in the Chamber, I'm able to work together with the many area business owners to help continue promoting our county,” he says.

Dan lives in Greensburg with his girlfriend Kelly. In his free time, he enjoys running, attending as many Pittsburgh sporting events as he possibly can, and hanging out with his dogs, Cooper and Abby.

Chad Amond, Chamber President & CEO, Graduates from Institute for Organization Management A Leadership Training Program Produced by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is pleased to announce that Chad Amond, President & CEO of the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce, has graduated from the program and has received the recognition of IOM. Awarded to all graduates of the Institute program, the IOM Graduate Recognition signifies the individual’s completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management. In addition, participants can earn credit hours toward the Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) or Certified Association Executive (CAE) certifications. Nearly 1,000 individuals attend Institute annually.

“Institute graduates are recognized across the country as leaders in their industries and organizations,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s vice president of Institute for Organization Management. “These individuals have the knowledge, skills, and dedication necessary to achieve professional and organizational success in the dynamic association and chamber industries.”

From the Chairman It’s that time again for “back to school” everything – a great time for the Chamber, our members, and our community partners.

In the classic comedy “Back to School” starring Rodney Dangerfield, the self-made businessman Thornton Melon decides to spend more time with his college-aged son so he enrolls in the college attended by his square son, Jason Melon. Thornton’s adventure takes him through all of the ups and downs of being a student. He navigates the bookstore, professors, parties, and dorm life. All the while, Thornton struggles to reconcile his real world experience with the requirements of academia. So, when tightlipped professor Barbay gives the academic version of the economics of building a factory, Thornton retorts with a litany of the “real world” economics experienced by business people. The scene ends when Dr. Barbay queries the class about a location to build the factory to which Thornton exclaims, “How about Fantasyland?” The film finds rich comedy in these “real world” distinctions.

In Westmoreland County, we recognize the current economic realities and the need to align our educational institutions with our business needs. Many of you know of the Chamber’s leadership role in the Westmoreland County Forum for Workforce Development. Our Board Members Jim Smith, Jason Rigone, and Dr. Tuesday Stanley lend their talents to the Forum’s Board, which is now chaired by another Board Member Dr. Jamie Piraino. The Forum’s mission is “to connect business and education through coordinated opportunities which will improve workforce quality and economic development.”

The Westmoreland County Community College recently completed a rebranding effort – Ambitious. Led by Dr. Tuesday Stanley, the main campus is supported by several key centers. The renaming of the Murrysville Center underscores the college’s commitment to our business community. I ask our members to match the college’s commitment by remaining mindful of this important business partner in your hiring process, internal training, and continuing education. Here too, our Chamber Board remains committed to our cooperative efforts to make Westmoreland County even greater, as we continually work on our mission of “BUILDING BUSINESS. CONNECTING COMMUNITIES. EMPOWERING EVERYONE.” Our Chamber also recognizes the important role of our government partners, as shown at the August ribbon cutting of the college’s Murrysville Center. State Representative Eric Nelson and our County Commissioners each lent praise to the freshly painted and welcoming entrance. Yet, the remarks of Murrysville Mayor Bob Brooks confirmed the important role of our cooperating partners in our mission, and the Chamber thanks Mayor Brooks for his constant leadership to our business community.

All in all, our Board congratulates our Chamber partners that work so hard to align our education, government, and business interests for the betterment of our fabulous County.
