The dedication and tireless efforts of these individuals have played a pivotal role in steering our chamber through a year of challenges and successes. Executive Board of Directors 2024 New Leadership The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to usher in a new era of leadership as we proudly announce key appointments to our esteemed Executive Committee for the upcoming year, beginning in 2024. These dedicated individuals bring a wealth of experience and passion to their roles, embodying the spirit of collaboration, growth, and community engagement that defines our chamber.
2024 Chair - Maria LaVelle Maria A. LaVelle is the chief executive officer of PHEPLE Federal Credit Union in Greensburg, a role she has maintained for the past 21 years. The credit union currently serves over 16,000 members with $120 million in assets. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business and her MBA from Point Park University. Maria serves on the Board of Directors for the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County and the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce. She has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Credit Union National Association and the National Credit Union Foundation. In addition, she has served on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Credit Union Advisory Council, Chair of the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association, and Chair of the Pennsylvania Credit Union Foundation. Maria resides in Murrysville with her partner, Keith. She has two beautiful daughters, Ciara and Selena, and a five-year-old grandson, R.J.
2024 Vice Chair—Chris Mohler –King Chris King is the Vice President of Sendell Motors, a prominent family-owned business located in Westmoreland County. As a Subaru Dealer, she plays a pivotal role in overseeing the sales and operations of the company's three franchises. Chris is not only a dedicated business owner but also a passionate and active individual in her community. In addition to her responsibilities at Sendell Motors, Chris is deeply involved in various community initiatives and organizations. She represents the region on several automotive dealership advisory boards, contributing her expertise to the industry. Beyond her professional commitments, Chris is a devoted mother and volunteer, channeling her efforts to support local schools and youth sports teams. Six years ago, Chris joined the United Way's Women's Leadership Council (WLC), where she actively participates and engages with other working women and female leaders in the community. She values the networking opportunities and connections she has made over the years through her involvement in WLC. Chris extends her philanthropic efforts by serving on a steering committee dedicated to supporting the United Way's Open Your Heart to a Senior program. Additionally, she holds key positions as a board member in influential organizations such as the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce, CASA of Westmoreland, and Adelphoi—an organization focused on assisting at-risk children.
2024 Treasurer - Janeen Moffa Janeen Moffa is the Vice President & Senior Regional Business Relationship Manager of 1st Summit Bank serving the vibrant community of Westmoreland County. With a distinguished career spanning over 22 years in commercial lending and branch management, Janeen is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Bankers School of Commercial Lending, showcasing her commitment to continuous professional development. In addition to her impressive professional background, Janeen is deeply committed to community service and engagement. She currently serves as the Board President at CASA of Westmoreland, demonstrating her dedication to advocating for the welfare of the local community. Her involvement extends to the Murrysville Economic and Community Development Board, contributing to the growth and prosperity of the region. Notably, she holds the position of President at the Greater Latrobe Girls Basketball Boosters, showcasing her commitment to supporting youth development and sports in the community. Outside of her professional and community commitments, Janeen finds joy and fulfillment in her role as a mother to two daughters, Addison and Ava. Residing in the heart of Latrobe.

Tax Expansion of the Pennsylvania Child and Dependent Care Credit! A great initiative! The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce is overjoyed to share the fantastic news of a significant triumph for working families statewide – the tax expansion of the Pennsylvania Child and Dependent Care Enhancement Tax Credit. This monumental legislation is a true game-changer for parents and caregivers, made possible by the unwavering support of the Pennsylvania State Legislature. First and foremost, we express our profound gratitude to the state legislature, particularly acknowledging the unwavering commitment of the Westmoreland County delegation. Special thanks are extended to Senator Kim Ward, Senator Pittman, Representative Jill Cooper, Eric Nelson, Eric Davanzo and George Dunbar who consistently demonstrate accessibility and a genuine willingness to address our concerns from the Chamber. Their relentless and devoted efforts have played a pivotal role in championing essential causes that deeply resonate within our community. Additionally, sincere appreciation goes to Chamber member Emily Neff and Cara Ciminillo of Trying Together, along with the various Chamber of Commerce entities across Pennsylvania, for their collaborative endeavors in establishing a highly effective statewide advocacy group.
Throughout the past several months, The Chamber has worked diligently in close collaboration, united in our efforts to promote affordable and efficient childcare. Their steadfast support has proven crucial to our collective success, significantly advancing the interests of our community.
Kudos to the State legislature and Continued Efforts from the Westmoreland County Delegation Act 33 expands the existing childcare tax credit program, alleviating the financial burden of child and dependent care for working families in Pennsylvania. This vital initiative aims to reduce tax liability and positively impact our workforce. Employers consistently voiced challenges in hiring due to the lack of accessible and affordable childcare, and the Childcare Tax Credit addresses this issue, providing significant relief to both businesses and families. The new rules now allow individuals to claim 100% of the federal credit, including $3,000 for a single dependent and $6,000 for two or more. Families can now receive credits of up to $1,200 for one-child households and up to $2,100 for those with multiple children. Over 200,000 families statewide will benefit from this expansion, helping them overcome barriers to access and cope with skyrocketing childcare costs. In 2022, the Department of Labor reported median expected childcare costs ranging from $8,310 to $17,171 for younger children. Beyond the financial relief, the impact of this legislation empowers parents to enter or reenter the workforce. The childcare crisis has been a significant hindrance to our economy, costing employers over $3 billion and the state of Pennsylvania $6.65 billion annually. While we celebrate this win in making childcare more affordable for working families, we look forward to finding ways to address the staffing crisis so that we can ensure more children have access to high-quality childcare. Thank again to our state legislatures and our Westmoreland County Delegation for supporting Pennsylvania families and fostering a more robust and inclusive workforce. Let's continue to work towards a brighter future for all!
Chamber Champion on the Month The Westmoreland County Commissioners As we step into a promising and industrious year for our business community, the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce our esteemed Commissioners as the Chamber Champions for the month of January. This recognition comes as we gear up for a year filled with expanded events, enhanced educational opportunities, increased legislative advocacy, and much more. The Chamber's Ambassador Committee, comprised of dedicated members, has unanimously chosen our Commissioners to kick off the new year as Champions. Their responsibilities encompass overseeing crucial entities such as Westmoreland Manor, County Prison, Juvenile Detention, all County Parks, and managing a workforce of over 2000 individuals. Furthermore, the Commissioners play a pivotal role in handling the fiscal affairs of the County, supervising the Area Agency on Aging, and overseeing all departments falling under Human Services. This significant portfolio reflects their commitment to navigating the challenges faced by our community, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic. In a time when many communities are still working towards recovery, grappling with workforce challenges, and seeking strategies to counter declining populations, our Commissioners have shown exceptional dedication to steering Westmoreland County towards prosperity. We are thrilled to have the newly elected Ted Kopas, along with the re-elected Dough Chew and Sean Kertes, as our Commissioners for the year 2024. Their open and effective communication with the Chamber has been nothing short of exemplary. The Chamber eagerly anticipates collaborating with them on a wide array of issues that will further enhance and uplift our business community throughout 2024. The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce extends its heartfelt congratulations to Commissioners Ted Kopas, Dough Chew, and Sean Kertes for being named our Chamber Champions for 2024. We look forward to a year of shared accomplishments and continued progress for the Westmoreland business community under their leadership.
The Scoop On Our Westmoreland County Commissioners Commissioner Sean Kertes was elected to office in November of 2019 and serves as Chairman of the Board. He began his career as the Westmoreland County Deputy Treasurer in 2012. In 2016, he continued his career in public service as Chief of Staff to retired Commissioner Charles Anderson. Commissioner Kertes is a graduate of Hempfield Area High School and California University of Pennsylvania. Sean Kertes is the co-founder of Grow Westmoreland which is a non-profit organization operating in and serving Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The program's focus is to provide training and scholarship opportunities for local individuals ages 18-25 that are interested in careers in agriculture and skilled labor. He resides in the City of Greensburg. Commissioner Ted Kopas, a dedicated public servant and private sector professional, served as Commissioner from 2010 to 2020 in various political roles, both in the majority and minority. With a commitment to fiscal responsibility and providing essential services, Kopas prioritized programs that enhanced communities, economy, public safety, human services, and overall quality of life. His proven track record includes establishing priorities and programs that contributed to the well-being of Westmoreland County residents. In addition to his role as Commissioner, Kopas recently resigned from the Pennsylvania Governor’s Action Team, where he spearheaded comprehensive economic development services, fostering job creation and private investment. A 1995 graduate of Allegheny College, Kopas, 49, was born and raised in Westmoreland City, North Huntingdon Township. A proud Norwin graduate and Distinguished Alumni, he has received accolades such as Government Official of the Year from the Greater Westmoreland Labor Council. Ted resides in Hempfield Township with his wife, April, and their five children—Elle, Alex, Quinn, Jack, and Teddy. As a testament to his commitment to community and family, Kopas continues to make significant contributions, leaving a lasting impact on Westmoreland County and its residents. Commissioner Doug Chew is a dedicated public servant with deep roots in Westmoreland County. A proud graduate of Hempfield High School, he earned his BS in Biochemistry and Biophysics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1992. For nearly three decades, Commissioner Chew served on the faculty at Pitt, collaborating on grant initiatives that not only created jobs but also earned him Pitt's highest award for public service in 1999. A lifelong resident of Westmoreland County, Commissioner Chew's political engagement includes chairing the District 5 Republican Committee and serving a six-year term as an elected member of the Hempfield Board of Auditors starting in 2009. In 2019, he was elected Westmoreland County Commissioner, a role he wholeheartedly enjoys. Family holds a special place in Commissioner Chew's life. Married to Cyndi, a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Assistant Professor at Pitt, they are raising their two young boys, Andy and Luke, in their Hempfield home. With a son who is a decorated Eagle Scout and another who recently returned to the area after graduating from Drexel University, Commissioner Chew's commitment to Westmoreland County is a testament to his love for the community and dedication to public service.

On December 6th, 57 members set up tables at the Holiday Business Expo held at Antonelli’s Event Center. 230+ participants networked with other members, gathered business information. The Benefits of Prioritizing Employee Well-being Prioritizing employee well-being is a strategic move for any business looking to successfully develop their business and enhance their competitive edge among their peers. Dear Board Members, Community Partners, and Supporters:: As we enter another challenging year, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible journey we have shared as The Westmoreland Diversity Coalition. Not without challenges, The year 2023 was a year of growth, empowerment, and collective impact, and we are immensely proud to have had each one of you as an integral part of our existence. We are thrilled to share that this past year marked a significant milestone for us—the establishment of our office. This physical space is not just a location; it is a symbol of our growth and commitment to fostering difference and inclusion within the Westmoreland community. It serves as a hub for collaboration, creativity, and the exchange of ideas—a place where our vision for a more inclusive tomorrow comes to life through programs such as: Hidden Treasures; Turn-the-Tables; The Book Club for at-risk youth; our upcoming Training Institute; the Community Billboard Campaign and the 2024 Make it Matter Regional Conference. One of our most noteworthy accomplishments this year has been the expansion of our programming to include youth initiatives. We passionately believe in the power of nurturing some of the leaders of tomorrow, and it has been heartening to witness the positive impact our programs are making on the younger generation. In the spirit of gratitude, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to those in our community who share our commitment to service. We proudly take a moment to recognize individuals and organizations that have demonstrated unwavering dedication to making a difference. Your efforts, whether big or small, contribute to the tapestry of inclusivity we are working to weave together.
