On behalf of the Meijer State Games of Michigan team, we could not be more excited to welcome you and the over 6,000 atheltes competing this year to our 15th annual Summer Games! The Meijer State Games aims to promote inclusivity and sportsmanship through a multi-sport, Olympic style games competition. Through this, athletes are expected to practice fair play, respect, and perseverance when fighting for the gold!
We are overjoyed with the amount of success we have already seen with this year’s competition. Examples of this success include 580 participants signed up for our pickleball event, and over 100 participants wrestling in our revived beach wrestling event.
The Summer Games spans across the month of June with events happening between four different weekends. In addition to the many sporting events, we will also host an Olympic Day with the SpartanNash YMCA and our Opening Ceremony at the Meijer Sports Complex, both on June 21. All are invited to the kickoff party with entertainment, vendor tents, bracelet making, and a live raffle. After the kickoff party, the athletes will be called to the bases to represent their sport in the parade of the athletes followed by the lighting of the cauldron. This represents the official start of the Summer Games!
Besides participating in the events, the greater Grand Rapids area has many activities to enjoy. From the downtown area, which includes restaurants, museums, zoos, and more, to the beautiful lakes and beach towns, there is something for the whole family to enjoy. We hope you take advantage of the many opportunities West Michigan has to offer!
Lastly, we want to extend a huge thank you to all our sponsors and volunteers. Without the overwhelming amount of support, the Games’ philosophy of promoting happy and healthy living would not be possible. Through your generosity, we are able to give Michiganders the opportunity to participate in the sports and activities they love.
This is a time for you to showcase your skills and embrace your athleticism. Take in these special moments and enjoy every minute of it. Thank you for your participation and best of luck to you all!
Sincerely,
The Meijer State Games of Michigan Team
The Meijer State Games of Michigan is a multi-sport, Olympic-style event that welcomes athletes regardless of age or ability.
The Games embody the values of participation, sportsmanship and healthy living among residents of the state of Michigan. The philosophy of the Meijer State Games of Michigan is that everyone participates regardless of age or ability; everyone is welcome and everyone plays. The Meijer State Games of Michigan is truly a grassroots organization that relies on the dedication of thousands of volunteers and the support of corporate partners.

Adult Female Athlete of the Year
Hampton thought her playing days were over when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 26 years old. Although this news was abrupt and lifechanging, Hampton found news ways to compete and learned about the sports available through the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. She got into multiple sports, including fencing at the Meijer State Games of Michigan, and softball. She received first place in 2020 and 2022 in the adaptive foil division in the Winter Games fencing competition. In 2023, she competed with all able-body fencers and came in sixth place for women’s foil and ninth place for women’s epee. In addition to fencing, Hampton received the Sportsmanship Award at the 2022 National Wheelchair Softball World Series in Chicago. Her continued vivacity for life and love of sports have allowed Hampton to adapt and find new avenues, have fun, and stay active.
Adult Male Athlete of the Year
He credits his pole vault coach and Meijer State Games of Michigan track and field director, Dave Emeott, his mother and head coach of the girls track team at East Kentwood, Stephanie Stephenson, and his father, Tom Stephenson, for the huge impacts they made on his development as a pole vaulter and athlete. He broke the state record at the Michigan High School State Meet in 2018 with a jump of 16’9.5”. Since then, Stephenson competed at Michigan State University under coach Ceith Creekmur. He broke the indoor and outdoor school records at MSU with jumps of 5.66m (18’6.75”) and 5.72m (18’9.25) respectively. Stephenson also won the Big Ten Championship in 2023 with 5.49m (18’), placed eighth at the 2023 USATF Outdoor Championships with 5.61m (18’4.75”), placed fourth at the 2023 Indoor NCAA Finals with 5.66m (18’6.75”), and is a 5x NCAA All-American. Currently, he is training and coaching/working at RISE Pole Vault in Joliet, IL under Jake Winder.
Youth Female Athlete of the Year
he Meijer State Games of Michigan 2023 figure skating competition was only her second competition. She was extremely nervous, but always remained positive and kept a smile on her face. During her competition day, she received first place in both of her events and earned two gold medals. She was thrilled but without missing a beat, she took the time to go up to each competitor individually and tell them they each did an excellent job, displaying wonderful sportsmanship. Opening Ceremony was also another event she took advantage of, where she was the sole athlete who represented figure skating in the parade and proudly held the figure skating sign. She has excelled in this sport in a short period of time and shares her passion with others. Since the State Games competition, she has moved up four levels and practices several hours a week.
Harris started playing hockey when he was six years old but when he was eight, he was diagnosed with both Type 1 diabetes and Graves’ disease, which resulted in surgery to remove his thyroid. This caused him to miss a whole season of hockey, yet this did not deter him. When he got back on the ice, he had to work twice as hard as everyone else to catch up, which taught Harris the value of hard work and discipline. The values of determination and camaraderie are instilled in Harris by his coaches and parents, which have proven to help him succeed on the ice. In the Meijer State Games of Michigan 2023 hockey tournament, Harris had the most points on the D4 15U team even though he was the youngest player. Additionally, he scored a hat trick in one of the Games and helped his team earn a bronze medal.
The Volunteer of the Year Award is sponsored by LMCU, a proud sponsor of the Meijer State Games of Michigan since 2016.
Shari Hoke, from Greenville, MI, has been a student of Tae Park Tae Kwon Do for 10 years. She often acts as the “mom” in her class and provides support, encouragement, and the occasional treat to make sure everyone hits their goals and does their best. She also loves to volunteer, including at the Tae Kwon Do event in the Meijer State Games of Michigan Summer Games. At the 2023 event, Hoke was the Director of Volunteers and coordinated everyone’s role from start to finish, beginning in March with months of planning meetings. She ensured everything was set up and worked tirelessly to make sure the event was a success. Hoke originally joined Tae Park to spend time with her son and is a proud mom of three and a grandmother of two.

Opening Ceremony, sponsored by Northern Michigan University, celebrated the athletes competing that weekend while recognizing community members and organizations. TV-19 had a live broadcast during athlete check-in and was able to talk with Olympians, sponsors, and participants. Opening Ceremony officially started with the parade of athletes donning American flags and marching through the large NMU Wildcat head.
There were multiple Michigan Olympians in attendance to kick off the Marquette Winter Games. Those included Gary Morgan, a 1988 race walking Olympian, Nick Baumgartner, a 2022 gold medalist in snowboard cross, Shane Heams, a 2000 gold medalist in baseball, and Andy Bisek, a 2016 Greco-Roman wrestling Olympian and the current head coach of the NMU Greco-Roman wrestling team. Shane Heams then led the crowd in the oath of athletes.
Following the oath, Andy Bisek spoke about his experiences as an elite athlete and Olympian. He highlighted the importance of perseverance in achieving your goals as well as being thankful for friends and family as you navigate all of life’s challenges. Afterwards, to commemorate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the women who helped make the Marquette Winter Games possible were honored, including sponsors, tournament directors, participants, and operators.
The Marquette Mountain ski patrol carried the torch from the top of the mountain to the hands of Andy Bisek, where he lit the cauldron, signaling the start of the Games. A stunning fireworks show capped off a great night and started a fantastic weekend
