Tamara Steil - Swimming
Adult Female Athlete of the Year

Tamara Steil has an impressive resume in swimming and continues to swim simply because it is fun. She routinely has won gold at the Meijer States Games, competes at every National Senior Games – including breaking the record for the 100 and 200 breaststroke, has medaled at the USMS Swim Nationals, competed in the FINA World Swimming Championships in Budapest and the Michigan Senior Olympics. Winning medals and breaking records are not what drives Steil though; being active and competing with friends brings her so much joy and allows her to appreciate every competition, whether she wins or not.
Matthew Tesch - Track & Field
Adult Male Athlete of the Year

Matthew Tesch has always had a love for track and field, but since high school mainly stuck to sprinting events. After Tesch had triple fusion surgery at age 39 and could no longer compete in the events he used to, it was his son’s love of throwing discus that got him back into track and field. With his son as his coach, Tesch developed a passion for throwing discus, shot put and javelin. In the 2022 Summer Games, he had a PR in all three events, earning a gold medal in javelin and silver medals in discus and shot put. Tesch is grateful to be back on the track while being able to do this with his son, and looks forward to the 2023 Games.
Chloe Barnes - Field Hockey
Youth Female Athlete of the Year
Chloe Barnes learned at a young age that winning and being the best doesn’t always mean medals and trophies. Sometimes it just means stepping onto the field and getting to play. Barnes has chronic bone issues in her legs that cause her a lot of physical pain. In the days leading up to the 2022 Summer Games, Barnes was not sure she’d even be able to play in the Games. Despite the pain, Barnes played in the tournament and her positive energy was felt by her team. She’s grateful for every day she gets to play field hockey.

Andrew von Matt - Ice Hockey Youth Male Athlete of the Year
Andrew van Matt was nominated by his District 5 hockey coaches for going above and beyond for his teammates and displaying a tremendous amount of respect for everyone around him during the 2022 Summer Games. It is the little things von Matt does that separate him like picking up the pucks at the end of practice and shaking the referees’ hands. His team made it to the gold medal game on a goal he assisted on after making the switch to forward from defense after a teammate was injured. Von Matt’s mentality, sportsmanship and dedication to the game were key as he helped his team win gold at the 2022 Summer Games.

Don Passenger Volunteer of the Year

Don Passenger is currently a co-director of both the Summer Games track & field and 5K events. Passenger was nominated for this award by a participant at the 5K race event. According to the nomination, a young runner was hesitant to run the course by himself. Passenger - going above and beyond his duties as race director – decided to physically run the race with the young athlete. He was by his side the entire time and made sure he finished. Passenger’s passion, enthusiasm, and humor made the race enjoyable for all. Passenger has always rallied around the State Games events wanting them to be a welcoming place for all athletes of all ages and abilities to compete.

Deserving athletes and volunteers can be nominated for the 2024 Awards on the Meijer State Games of Michigan website

Building Healthy Habits THAT LAST A LIFETIME
At Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network, we believe that when kids are healthy, the future is bright. Through initiatives like #MIKidsCan, we’re providing education that helps kids live healthier lives. By teaching important ways to eat right and stay active, like getting 60 minutes of play every day, we’re ready to help kids build healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Blue

Opening Ceremony
February 10, 2023
Marquette Mountain Resort
Sponsored by Northern Michigan University
Opening Ceremony, sponsored by Northern Michigan University, highlighted the amazing athletes competing that weekend while honoring some Upper Peninsula figures. TV-19 was live and broadcasted the event, which started with the parade of athletes donning American flags and marching through the large NMU Wildcat head.

Michigan Paralympian, John Kusku, lead the crowd in the oath of athletes. Following the oath of athletes, Nick Baumgartner, a 2022 Olympic gold medalist, spoke to the attendees and got them ready for the weekend of sports. In partnership with Krist Oil, Baumgartner led the crowd in honoring veterans and awarded a challenge coin to Jim Provost on stage. Provost served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1965 to 1969 and has dedicated his time to helping veterans and the youth sports community in the Upper Peninsula since leaving the Marine Corps.
The Marquette Mountain ski patrol carried the torch from the top of the mountain to the hands of Nick Baumgartner, where he lit the cauldron, signaling the start of the Games. A stunning fireworks show capped off a great night and started a fantastic weekend.

Thank you.
Thank you to Eric Engelbarts for carrying the torch for the Meijer State Games of Michigan over the past 15 years. We’re grateful for the time, dedication, laughs, and leadership he’s given to the State Games and all of us. We wish him and his family all the best on their new adventure.
