Parks Make Life Better month recognizes the importance of access to local parks, recreation opportunities, free community events, and beyond to promote physical, emotional, and mental health/wellness. The City of Westminster works collectively to promote these services daily through: Public Parks, Recreation Programing, Special Events, and Community Services. Learn more about each of these resources and the team that makes it all happen below.

Westminster’s Parks are a place for family, friends and fun! Ever wonder how the beautiful trees, fun playgrounds, and picnic areas got there? It’s all made possible by a group effort from all our City departments. However, we can give a special thanks to our Public Works department who put extra work into planning and maintaining park amenities, such as our new Sigler Park Playground and Pickleball Courts.

Quality recreation contributes to our health, fitness, and social wellbeing. We recognize the value of recreation and want to give everyone something new to explore! Whether you’re taking a dance class with one of our many talented contract instructors, learning a new sport from our youth sports recreational team or playing a game of chess with some friends at the senior center, we guarantee we have something that will peak your interest.

Fall Festival, Movies & Music Nights, Tet Parade and our annual Tree Lighting are just some of the fun and meaningful events that we provide to our community. The city-wide staff team puts great effort into planning and executing these special events to ensure opportunities for our community to be active, have fun and stay connected.

Our city is constantly working towards planning, implementing, and improving the various services that we provide to our residents. Our Community Services & Recreation Department is made up of 3 divisions that offer helpful services. The Family Recource Center supports families in need by offering resources such as counseling and basic needs assistance. Our Senior Center provides valuable amenities to our aging community such as free lunch and transportation programs. The Community Services & Recreation division offers a free afterschool parks program and low cost sports for local youth.

The West Orange County Community Emergency Response Team or CERT Program is comprised of those who live or work in Buena Park, Cypress, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, Westminster and their attached communities. The CERT Academy is a 20 hour course and fills up quickly so reserve your seat early by pre-registering at www.westcountycert.com.

The West County CERT Program’s primary purpose is to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact them at home, at work, or at play. The CERT Basic Training covers basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members are better able to assist their family, neighborhood or workplace following an event when first responders (paramedics, fire, and police) are not immediately available to help. In an emergency, CERT teaches you to take care of your personal safety first, then your family, and then those around you. It is important to know what to do to protect ourselves and our family members before, during, and after an emergency event.

Once the basic CERT training has been completed CERT members are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects, bi-monthly Team pot-luck dinners and other events like the Westminster Tet Parade. These events help to build Team comradery, keep members up to date, and refine the skills taught in the basic training.
