At Westminster Nursery School the child is at the center of all we do. Our curriculum and activities are play based, process driven and child directed. Through open ended play, the children find purpose in their day, while developing the skills they need at a pace they delight in.

Additionally, we are a cooperative preschool, which presents parents with the opportunity for wide-ranging participation in the child’s preschool experience and development. Parents typically help in the classroom 1-2 times each month, can participate in various aspects of the school planning and even serve on the board.

The West Orange County Community Emergency Response Team or CERT Program is comprised of those who live or work in Buena Park, Cypress, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, Westminster and their attached communities. The CERT Academy is a 20 hour course and fills up quickly so reserve your seat early by pre-registering at www.westcountycert.com.

The West County CERT Program’s primary purpose is to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact them at home, at work, or at play. The CERT Basic Training covers basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members are better able to assist their family, neighborhood or workplace following an event when first responders (paramedics, fire, and police) are not immediately available to help. In an emergency, CERT teaches you to take care of your personal safety first, then your family, and then those around you. It is important to know what to do to protect ourselves and our family members before, during, and after an emergency event.

Once the basic CERT training has been completed CERT members are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects, bi-monthly Team pot-luck dinners and other events like the Westminster Tet Parade. These events help to build Team comradery, keep members up to date, and refine the skills taught in the basic training.

Working smoke alarms reduce your risk of dying in a

Children and adults drown without a sound. No one should ever swim alone.

Install

• Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways outside bedrooms or sleeping areas, and on every level of the home.

A is for ACTIVE ADULT SUPERVISION

• Keep infants and toddlers within an arm’s reach.

• No one should ever swim alone, including adults.

• Install smoke alarms on the ceiling or high on a wall. Make sure they are at least 10 feet from the stove and 3 feet from doors leading to the kitchen to reduce false alarms.

• Never rely on water wings, rafts, or other swimming aids in place of U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets.

• Keep smoke alarms away from bathrooms with tubs or showers, heating or cooling ducts or vents, and ceiling or whole-house fans.

• Assign an adult to be a Water Watcher, actively keeping their eyes on the water without ANY distractions.

• Check the back for the manufacture date and replace all alarms when they are 10 years old.

• If a child or adult is missing, every second counts! Check the water FIRST!

• Use interconnected smoke alarms so when one sounds, they all sound.

• It’s safest to use both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms.

B is for BARRIERS

• Install and maintain proper fencing around the pool and spa to isolate swimming areas.

• Use multiple layers of protection, such as fences, gates, doors, alarms, and safety covers.

Inspect

• Special alarms with strobe lights and bed shakers are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

• Use self-closing, self-latching gates that open outward and away from the pool.

• Test all smoke alarms once a month.

• Remove items such as chairs or tables that a child could use to climb over a fence.

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning to keep smoke alarms working well.

Protect

• Learn to swim by taking lessons.

• Draw a home escape plan that shows two ways out of every room and an outside meeting place.

9-1-1.

• Teach children what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear it.

Disposal

• Teach children that running, jumping, and pushing others on pool decks is dangerous and can cause injuries. Always enter area.

• Check the label on the device or research the type of alarm you have. Not all smoke alarms have radioactive materials.

Drain Safety

• Keep children away from pool and spa drains to avoid entrapment and entanglement.

• If your device does not contain radioactive materials per the product description, you can remove the battery and dispose of the alarm in the trash.

• Keep long hair tied back and remove dangling items like jewelry or bathing suit ties.

• Install compliant safety drain covers and automatic shut-off pump systems.

• If your product does contain radioactive materials, Orange County residents can bring it to any of OC Waste and Recycling’s four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers for free recycling. Visit for more information on disposal locations.
