Mid-Year Report 2023

1

November 3, 2023 Dear Residents, One of the things I like most about my job is the opportunity it gives me to see and speak with so many of you on a daily basis. Visiting with residents enriches my personal relationships, keeps me in touch with our community, and provides the feedback and input we need to serve you better. This letter continues that ongoing dialogue. Consider it a brief mid-year report to highlight some community accomplishments, note a few projects underway, acknowledge the contributions of our residents and team members, and update you on the progress we’re making within the five pillars of our strategic plan: Culture, Technology, Programs, Campus, and Finances. We will prepare a more complete and comprehensive report at the end of the year, but for now, I wanted to keep you posted on the good things happening at Westminster Village.

Culture: A Community of Caring We are proud of the residents who have made significant contributions to Westminster Village through volunteer programs that enrich our culture and reflect our deep feeling of camaraderie and community. Singing the Praises of Residents The WV Board of Directors recently honored the Jazz at Westminster Concert Series, which has enjoyed high popularity among our residents through joyful music and one-of-a-kind entertainment. These concerts have consistently been the most well-attended events in recent memory, and have hosted more than 50 musicians, some of whom enjoy international repute, performing at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. The resident-led committee behind the series has played a significant role in making these concerts special in many ways. Caring Is in the Cards Another all-volunteer program that has supported our mission is “The Card Ladies,” led by Bev Wiggins and her team of volunteers. Together, they’ve been making, repurposing, and selling greeting cards to benefit Westminster Village for the past eight years, raising more than $46,000 to date. It’s a community-wide effort, with various resident crafters and artists contributing their time and talents to make unique cards beloved by residents. Their tireless dedication and unwavering commitment to making a difference have earned them the honor of being named LeadingAge Arizona’s “Volunteer of the Year” in May 2023.

Giving Back to the Community We’ve extended our outreach to the wider community through donations to organizations such as St. Mary’s Food Bank, Lowell Observatory, Scottsdale Rotary Club initiatives, and Maricopa County Fraternal Order of Police Cops for Kids campaign. These contributions highlight our commitment to social responsibility and our dedication to supporting causes that align with our values. You’re the TOPS! Our resident-led program to recognize extraordinary employees is literally TOPS: The Totally Outstanding Professional Service Program. It goes beyond recognizing excellence to underscore our organization’s core values. Through categories such as Integrity, Above and Beyond, Team Member, and Customer Service, we celebrate team members who consistently demonstrate our best qualities, fostering a culture of strong ethics, teamwork, and exceptional service. In the News Our monthly newsletters and informative blogs have emerged as vital tools for enhancing interaction among residents, team members, and prospective residents. These platforms serve as informative and engaging channels to keep everyone informed, included, and connected.

Technology: Better Living through Science We continue updating, improving, and implementing new systems to enhance the quality, safety, convenience, and most importantly, enjoyment of our community. A New Lifeline Our newly installed nurse call system has upgraded our ability to provide exceptional, rapid-response, at-the-ready care. It enables residents to communicate their needs directly with the nursing staff and offers monitoring capabilities that can automatically alert nurses should a health or safety concern arise. Keeping an Eye on Safety We’ve bolstered our security infrastructure with the installation of 19 new security cameras. This addition brings our total number of security cameras to 42, significantly improving our ability to monitor and secure our campus effectively. Making Life Easier and More Fun Our commitment to upgraded technology extends to all new apartments. We’ve introduced cutting-edge technology solutions to improve connectivity, ensuring that residents have seamless access to digital resources and communication tools, enhancing their overall living experience.

Programs: Building Our Culture of Care Continuing with our quality of life focus, we are supporting a number of programs that nurture our community and make Westminster Village a premier place to live, including ongoing hospitality training for team members, enhanced individualized care, and facility construction that ensures the highest levels of service for years to come. Building Our Culture of Care We are very pleased with the progress we’re making on the Weyrich Health Care Center renovation. Phase 1 continues on schedule for completion by the end of this year, while our license change from skilled nursing to enhanced Assisted Living takes place in early 2024. Once that happens, construction begins on Phase 2, which should last about six months. This ongoing remodeling project at WHCC reflects our dedication to providing state-of-the-art facilities for residents. The transition to Assisted Living (A.L.) is a strategic step to meet the evolving needs of our senior population and create a culture of care in an environment that feels more like home, while encouraging improved engagement among team members, administration, and residents.

6

Campus: Surrounded by Beauty We take pride in the appearance of our campus, knowing that the attractiveness of our grounds and facilities is an important part of what makes Westminster Village special. Lightening & Brightening The ongoing painting and redecorating project on our first floor, including new LED lighting and furniture in the hallways, lobby, and library, improves the aesthetics of our campus and creates a fresh and welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors, enhancing their overall experience. Likewise, improvements to our front entrance have not only added visual appeal, but by replacing traditional landscaping with xeriscaping, we’ve significantly reduced our water usage, contributing to sustainability efforts and showcasing our commitment to environmentally responsible practices. It’s in Our Nature Contracting with a master gardener and landscape consultant reflects our dedication to creating a visually appealing and well-maintained campus environment, ensuring that our residents can enjoy the beauty of nature within our community.

7

Finance: Maintaining Long-Term Stability Our focus on cost containment measures underscores our commitment to fiscal responsibility and ensures that we manage our financial resources judiciously. Information & Performance We continue to focus on providing additional information and resources to foster financial accountability, such as budget variance reports for all department heads that empower them to manage expenses effectively and contribute to our financial stability.

As of June 30, financial goals as set forth by the Board of Directors have either been met or exceeded.

8

Looking Up So far, 2023 has been a year of renewal and recovery. We have emerged from turbulent times, shored up our financial foundations, and begun anew the important task of planning and building for our future. I am continually struck by the trust and optimism of our valued residents, the skill and devotion of our caring team members, and the unflagging service and leadership of our Resident Council, administration, and Board of Directors. Thank you for taking the time to keep up to date with this cherished community we call home. As always, please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns.

Sincerely, Tom Winkelman Chief Executive Officer
