Letter to Hidden Lake and Westminster High School Class of 2020I so wish I could be with you in person as you celebrate this milestone in your life. You have all worked so hard to get to this point in your life and you deserve a joyous, loud, “dance across the stage.” I hope to see that in person, later this summer. I promise you, that if there is any way we can pull it off, we will. As I was thinking about what to say to you, an ironic thought crossed my mind. For years, we have been telling you to take your eyes off of that DARN screen… and now, here we are. Another irony… your parents couldn’t wait for you to get out of the house and out on your own. And now, here we are. If you had older siblings who graduated from our district, and you went to their ceremony, you know that I always ask students to look around the arena, find their loved ones and give them a huge round of applause. Right now, I ask you to look around the room, the back yard, wherever you are and say “thank you.” These are hard times, economically, emotionally and socially, for you to be taking that next step into the world. There is no doubt about it. However, in a strange way, your young lives have come full circle. Most of you were born in the shadow of 9-11 which forever changed everyone’s lives, just as this pandemic has. I can assure you that now, as then, the good overcomes the bad, the future is brighter than the past, and we, as a community, will get through this. We always have and we always will. Congratulations to each and every one of you, and I hope to see you later this summer.
LETTER FROM PRINCIPAL Kiffany Kiewiet
I am so happy to be able to celebrate you all. Now just like you, it has been hard to accept that we are not all together at the 1st Bank Center watching you walk in while you wave at your families, your faces beaming with pride. We do not get to see the giant picture faces in the crowd or that crazy uncle that is yelling just a little too loud that you are embarrassed by, but also really grateful for. This situation has taken away the opportunity for us to celebrate together, but it can’t take away all that you have done to get here! I would be lying if I said that I haven’t shed a tear or two about it because this is not only the best moment of your high school careers, but as educators, it is the best moment of ours as well. This isn’t the way that we wanted your year to end or the way that you deserve, but please know that even though we are not able to be together we are sending all of our love your way. With a giant virtual hug! As we end our time together at Westy I want you to remember how special you are. You are special because you made it! You made it to the finish line under these unbelievable circumstances. You are special because you didn’t give up, because you persevered through the last two months of your high school career working from your living room, bedroom, or maybe your garage. I know that this was difficult; I know that you had to dig down deep and discover how strong you really are. But you haven’t just discovered out how strong you are in the last two months, you have been strong since the moment that you walked in the door as freshmen, not knowing what to expect. Experiencing and accomplishing the things you have during your time at Westy has taken strength, sometimes using strength you didn’t know you had until you got through it. Whether it was performing in front of a crowd, on a stage, or on a field, it took guts to get out there! What about the first time you dunked a basketball or you received your first 4 in a class? These are experiences that wouldn’t have been possible had you not been strong enough to persevere to accomplish these goals. These are all memories that you will treasure but you are about to discover a whole new world. Where your strength will be so important. Your first college class, earning your first paycheck, or buying your first home. These will be scary too, but they will be exciting just the same and you will get through them because you are #WESTYSTRONG! As we have learned in the last few weeks, life isn’t always fair, it isn’t always what we want and it isn’t always what we dream of but I fully believe that everything happens for a reason. I cannot tell you I know the reason that this happened to your class, but I can tell you that it makes you even more special and stronger than you already are. I can tell you that I am so proud of you, I am so sad for you and what you did not get to experience as Seniors. I am so hopeful that we will get to celebrate you again, each one of you, in person! You are a special class, comprised of amazing young adults that I know will rule the world! You have endured a situation that none of us have ever experienced and hopefully will not again in our lifetime, but you all can let it control you or you can control it! That is your choice! So use your strength, your courage and your perseverance as you go on to your day after graduation and know that we are all here with you. So to the strong, special and courageous class of 2020, we love you all. Now get out there and make us proud!
VALEDICTORIAN Marissa Martinez Suarez
This is not exactly what I pictured when they said 2020 vision…but that still does not take away from this moment. Getting here wasn’t easy, so let’s take time to cheer and to celebrate to all those late nights of friendship and the hours we spent contemplating if we were working hard or hardly working. I know all of us are disappointed that we are not celebrating in person. However, I want to remind you of something that a wise person once said, “The journey is always better than the destination.” Graduation cannot and will not ever compare to all the incredibly impactful relationships we’ve fostered, the challenging, and sometimes overwhelming experiences we’ve collectively overcome. We are the next generation of engineers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, social workers, and all great things in between. We will be the class that finds a cure for cancer, we will solve world hunger, we will end pollution, and we will be the solution. I was the girl for whom English was not her first language. I was the girl who grew up undocumented. I was the girl who failed English in elementary school. I am the last person that you would picture standing here today in front of your screens giving this speech. Nevertheless, I stand before you because of years of self-investment and hard work. I remember year after year asking teachers for extra credit assignments, tutoring myself through online resources, and spending hours on my homework, despite being confused with the content. Although there are smarter students, the thing that makes me stand out and what has brought me here today is my persistence as I always aim for more. I share this part of my story with you in hopes that if there is anyone out there who does not think they can accomplish their goals and dreams, know that I’m an example of what is possible. I was constantly told about the things I could not do and it would have been nice to hear more often “You can and you will!” Do not accept no for an answer. Do not let the words of others bring you down. In a few months, I will finally become a U.S. citizen, I will attend my dream school, and will start my journey. Part of why I am here today is through the sacrifices made by those who came before me. Thank you to all my teachers who have helped me along the way and guided me when I was lost. Thank you to Ms. Crabtree who showed me that it is never too late to change your career and do the things you love, to Mr. Linenberger who helped me reach my dreams of post-secondary education, to Ms. Sam Casanova who taught so much through her beautiful use of words, and I want to especially thank the woman who I am convinced is my guardian angel, Ms. Olivia Hunte. She is one of the hardest workers I know and she is a true inspiration. She believed in me when I did not believe in myself, and she opened my eyes to the true potential I hold. She is truly a rare gem and I could not have asked for a better mentor. The best advice I can give you is to find a mentor, because the best way to learn is from each other. My family has been my biggest support system throughout the years and has always pushed me to aim for the best. Lorena, Vane, Alejandro, I feel so blessed to call you guys my siblings, and thank you for being my best friends. I want to give a special thank you to my mom and dad for being the smartest investors I know, and investing in the future of their kids by bringing them to the land of opportunity. There are not enough words to thank you for your sacrifices and unconditional love. I leave you with a quote, “Some die for sharing the dream. Some die for you to live it. You are your ancestors’ wildest dreams! It is your job to pick it up and run with it.”

Take a moment to consider, what did I really get from Hidden Lake High School? What did I learn? Did I just learn facts or figures that I did not know? Or did I learn how to relate to people who were different and that I would never have met? Did I learn to think about the world, about others and see a broader picture? Ask how have I have changed and become bigger than my story? Lady Gaga said, “Don’t you ever let a soul in the world tell you that you can’t be exactly who you are!” We accept who you are and push you to ask how you have changed. Ask, am I a better person than when I was before Hidden Lake, have I changed in a fundamental way? Take some time to think about those questions and identify the people that supported you along the way, the teachers, administrators and Board members that support Hidden Lake and you. Take the time to thank them for all of the support and especially now in our current global crisis. In the end, this global interdependence will bring us together in ways we have not yet defined or even thought about. Last night, I watched a neighbor perform a short guitar concert from his driveway. He does this each night at 8:00 p.m. to honor our first responders. It was more than that. The neighbors came out, social distanced, cheered, applauded, and enjoyed the music. Until COVID-19 spontaneous gatherings in a show of support like these were rare occurrences. People are adapting and evolving the ways they connect and communicate. I believe that this common global familiarity with loss will turn out to be vital experience to boost humanity past petty differences. I know that all of us have been stressed to be at-home and with our families, more than ever before. As your part in the story of this rapidly changing moment of the human experience, take some time to genuinely, directly say thank you to your family. You may have quarreled, divided, come together, cried, laughed and reflected as part of your story. Today we celebrate! We at Hidden Lake say thank you to your family and parents for helping to get you to graduation. “You are braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think,” stated Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh. Think back and treasure the times you have spent in school treasure the memories you have experienced. Keep a focus on your journey and the narrative of your story, not just the destination. Today you have reached just one milestone in your life. Graduation is not a destination but a jumping-off point to be fearless in what sets your soul on fire. Martin Luther King stated, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy.” Many of your lives are littered with challenge and controversy, by choosing your attitude, and by choosing your own way you have exercised one of the last human freedoms to choose to define who you are. Remember, as you reflect on the questions posed, there are no permanent successes; no permanent losses… but a life of enduring possibilities. The most important thing we can do each and every day is to find a way to be a hero, to expand the definition of “us,” and shrink the definition of “them.” Our commonality makes it possible for our differences to flourish and lift up the future. Heroes do not let their story define them, they become bigger than their story. I am proud and humbled by your strength. I ask you to remember to choose a life that makes you happy; to choose not to give up; to choose to be open, honest, and direct with others; to choose to laugh with abandonment. I ask that you choose to extend grace, mercy, and forgiveness to others. Welcome to the rest of your lives!
HIDDEN LAKE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE Genesis Puga We are here to celebrate the class of 2020 and their achievements throughout these past 12 years. First off, I wanted to acknowledge that we made it through a quarantine. All the going crazy at home, eating, sleeping, praying and “idea making” was a new experience for all of us. I think we can all say that this will be a year to remember, but mainly a year that made everyone stronger. Not many can say that they lived and graduated during a pandemic…we can. 2020 has been a time of loss, from Kobe to COVID. May we use these tragic moments to finally wake up to what’s important. Right now it’s not about losing prom or graduation, it’s about telling someone you care about them, love them, value them because we need to cherish that we are here today, together. I would like to take a moment of silence for those who have lost family members or friends and say, “Thank you” to the ones who were risking their lives to save others. Together is how we will rise above as a nation. COVID-19 did not only teach me to be freaky clean, but it taught me determination. It taught me that if I can get through this year, I can get through any year. To be honest, I was at Hidden Lake High School because I was just like every normal teenager who made mistakes. Junior year I decided to drop out, move out from my parents’ house, and honestly, give up. I disappeared for two months, I was living far, far away from home and ended up homeless and living on the streets. Finally, I went to jail for a week but then I was rescued by my best friend, my dad. I’m not telling you this for you to feel pity or sadness for me. I realized that to grow up and learn, sometimes you have to have t everything taken from you to really see and value your surroundings, to really value yourself. I’m proud to say that the things I went through to made me who I am today. Sometimes we don’t understand why life throws things at you, but we need to remember that if we keep waking up every morning, if we keep our hope, if we learn to understand the meaning of love and respect for one’s self we can accomplish any goal or dream that we put out mindset to. We must be determined people, know that no matter what happens to you, it’s not over. There is no such thing as over as long as you keep going. That’s all we need. All we need is a chance, a mistake, a change, all we need is you. Don’t let anything stop you from believing in your dream or in your goal. Believe in yourself. Whatever you put your mind to, you’ll succeed. You might be sitting next to the new president of the United States, or next to the person who will have the cure for cancer or COVID-19. Some of us might even be the first to graduate in our families and say we did it. Never limit your mind, we must change our cant’s to cans, our impossible to possible.
