Mascot The Martlet The Westminster mascot is a mythical bird called a Martlet.

Since the Martlet has no feet, its only choice is to demonstrate its “grit and grace” by continuing to fly–despite obstacles, exhaustion or even a fierce headwind. The only space where the Martlet is represented with feet is in Andrews Memorial Chapel, the one place a Martlet can rest.

School Traditions Sign-In Ceremony The Sign-In Ceremony welcomes new students into the Westminster community. During the first week of school, new students line up and enter the Chapel where they sign their name in a large book holding the names of countless Westminster students. After they symbolically enter the history of Westminster, they shake hands with the Head of School, the final moment that signifies their status as a fullfledged Westminster student.

Pin Ceremony Occurring on the Sixth Form Lawn, the Pin Ceremony makes tangible the excitement and nostalgia that permeates a student’s Sixth Form year. The Sixth Form Dean, as well as faculty members who are alumni of the school, distribute pins to the boys and necklaces to the girls that showcase a one-of-a-kind image, specially designed by members of the form.

This same image appears on the Sixth Form flag, used to announce Hill Holidays during the course of the year.

Hill Holidays Perhaps Westminster’s most beloved tradition, Hill Holidays mean cheering, extra sleep, fun activities, and, most notably, no school for one day. Occurring four times per year, Hill Holidays are usually revealed at Assembly when the whole school gathers to hear announcements. The announcement, however, is anything but ordinary. In the past Head Prefects have announced Hill Holidays by running through the halls with the Sixth Form flag or making a short video and distributing it to the student body.

Family-Style Lunch One of the core elements of community at Westminster are family-style lunches in Armstrong Dining Hall. Family-style lunch provides an opportunity for students and faculty to get to know one another better and to engage in meaningful conversations with people they may not already know. They are held three days a week. On Mondays and Tuesdays, students are assigned to a table hosted by a faculty member. On Thursdays, students sit in advisory groups with their Advisor, giving them an opportunity to catch up and share important news.

Chapel The Chapel Program is one of the oldest traditions at Westminster School.

Organized by the student-run John Hay Society with the assistance of a faculty advisor, Chapel encompasses the Judeo-Christian tradition while embracing the world’s religions and philosophies. Chapel services are held during the school day on Tuesdays and Fridays and feature student chapel talks, musical performances and time for reflection. The program encourages members of the school community to think beyond themselves, and to be compassionate, sensitive and inclusive.

Candlelight Services Candlelight takes place on the Wednesday evening before students depart campus for winter break. The Chapel gathering features student readers and musical performances honoring the world’s religions and holiday celebrations.

All parents are invited to attend, so Candlelight services are a special moment for students and their families to come together in reflection and community.

Stickball This fiercely competitive spring evening sport pits corridors and day students against each other as they strive to hold the Stickball Trophy—and bragging rights—at the end of May. Characterized by witty game reports, team t-shirts and many funny moments when even Westminster’s most talented athletes strike out, Stickball is a throwback to the games of childhood where the players decide who’s safe and who’s out and everyone finds camaraderie as part of a team.

Lawn Ceremony The Lawn Ceremony symbolically represents the rising of the Fifth Form into the Sixth Form. Taking place adjacent to the Sixth Form Lawn, the Lawn Ceremony involves Sixth Form students on the eve of their Commencement pulling, carrying, even spinning their Fifth Form friends onto the lawn and into big bear hugs of congratulations. As the Sixth Form commemorates the end of their time as current Westminster students, the Fifth Form symbolically steps into the role of leaders on campus. Additionally, the Lawn Ceremony marks a significant moment for the entire school community because the last Fifth Formers standing on the outside of the Sixth Form Lawn will be the School Prefects for the following school year.

Diploma Passing During the Commencement ceremony, graduates receive a random diploma from the Head of School as they walk across the stage. Once the ceremony is complete, graduates form a large circle on the Sixth Form Lawn and pass the diplomas around the circle. When a student receives the diploma with their name on it, they step out of the circle signifying their graduation.

Welcome from the Parents Committee Co-Chairs Welcome Martlet Parents!

Over the years, one of the things we have come to appreciate most about Westminster is its strong sense of community. While our students are at the heart of the Westminster experience, parents and families play an important role in fostering the connections and sense of belonging that make it so special. Whether cheering from the sidelines, attending contests, performances, and school events, connecting with fellow parents on campus or at regional gatherings, volunteering, or serving as ambassadors for Westminster in your own communities, there are countless ways to be involved.

Some of our favorite Westminster memories have come through the friendships we have built with other families, and we hope you will take advantage of the many opportunities to connect and engage with the school and each other.

Westminster is a stronger and more vibrant community because of the support and engagement of parents and families, and we hope you will find meaningful ways to become part of that tradition. Parents Committee Membership All parents are invited and encouraged to join the Parents Committee. Each year, approximately 150 families participate as members. The Parents Committee provides an opportunity to stay connected to the school through volunteerism, learn about current priorities and initiatives, and hear directly from faculty and staff through special presentations and updates. The Parents Committee meets three times each year: once on campus during the fall term and twice over Zoom during the winter and spring terms.

In addition to our specific volunteer opportunities, all Parents Committee members contribute to the life of the school in the following ways: • Attending campus games, performances, and events to support their children’s activities (co-curricular volunteer opportunities are shared directly by coaches and advisors).

• Attending off campus receptions and gatherings whenever possible.

• Staying informed by reading parent email newsletters and following Westminster on social media (Instagram, Facebook, X, and LinkedIn).

• Being a positive advocate for the school and encouraging appropriate admissions candidates to consider Westminster.

• Supporting The Westminster Fund by making a gift that is meaningful to their family.

Parent Volunteer Opportunities In addition to joining any of the following volunteer opportunities by interest, parents can also engage in special projects/brainstorming sessions that come up over the course of the year.

Martlet Family Network Volunteer Volunteers welcome parents of newly enrolled students to Westminster and answer their questions as they prepare for the start of school.

Admissions Volunteer Admissions volunteers can be asked to take on various roles such as hosting or attending an admissions event for prospective students and parents, welcoming and answering questions for newly admitted families, or helping with Revisit Days.

Young Alumni Career Network Volunteer Volunteers can serve as a panelist on virtual career/industry panels or micromentoring sessions, or as a guest speaker for on-campus initiatives that help prepare Martlets for career networking as young alumni.

Faculty & Staff Appreciation Volunteer Volunteers help coordinate and distribute a small token of appreciation—often sourced in partnership with a local business—to faculty and staff on behalf of the Parents Committee.

Community Events Volunteer Interested parents can volunteer to host a Westminster gathering in their local area. Events can be hosted in a parent’s home or at a local restaurant or venue and can include: parent gatherings; parent, parent of alumni, and alumni receptions; and casual events such as paddle nights.

Parent Fundraising Volunteer Parent Fundraising Volunteers reach out to other families (typically in their child’s form), encouraging participation in giving to The Westminster Fund, particularly during 1888 Minutes of Giving, Westminster’s annual giving event in the spring.

Parent Stewardship Volunteer Volunteers help write thank you notes to other parents, parents of alumni, and grandparents for supporting The Westminster Fund.

Grandparents Day: Wed., October 7, 2026 A fun family tradition, Grandparents Day is an opportunity for current grandparents to visit campus, attend Chapel and class with their grandchildren, and cheer on athletic teams in the afternoon.

Fall Parents and Family Weekend: Thur.-Sat., October 22-24, 2026 Fall Parents and Family Weekend is a special opportunity to celebrate your student’s journey and help you connect more deeply with the people and programs shaping their Westminster experience. Over the course of the weekend, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in teacher conferences, learn more deeply about campus opportunities and initiatives for students, take in the performing arts show, watch Westminster teams compete, and enjoy time with fellow families. (The in-person Parents Committee meeting will take place on Friday, October 23. All parents are invited to attend.)

Candlelight Services: Wed., December 16, 2026 Candlelight Service is a required school appointment for all students, and all parents are invited and encouraged to join their students for this annual tradition. The community gathers in the Chapel to enjoy student readings and musical performances honoring the world’s religions and holiday celebrations.

Families are also invited to gather for dinner in Armstrong Dining Hall.

Winter Parents and Family Weekend: Fri.-Sat., February 19-20, 2027 Classroom visits with your students are the hallmark of Winter Parents and Family Weekend. This must-do weekend is an opportunity to attend classes, Chapel, special programming for parents, athletic contests, and “Dinner and a Show” featuring the Winter Musical.

1888 Minutes of Giving: Tues.-Wed., April 27-28, 2027 1888 Minutes of Giving is Westminster’s annual spring giving event. Spanning two days (April 27-28, 2027), we ask the entire Westminster community — alumni, parents, grandparents, students, faculty, staff and friends — to come together to support The Westminster Fund. It is an event full of exciting giving challenges and often features fun student competitions as well (for the last few years, students participated for the chance to win a Duds Day!).

Lawn Ceremony: Fri., May 28, 2027 The Lawn Ceremony symbolically marks the Fifth Form’s transition into campus leadership on the eve of Commencement. During the event, graduating Sixth Formers pull, carry, and celebrate their Fifth Form peers onto the Sixth Form Lawn with congratulatory bear hugs. Beyond honoring this rise in seniority, the ceremony carries a major reveal for the entire Westminster community: the last Fifth Formers remaining outside the lawn are named the School Prefects for the upcoming year.

Commencement: Sat., May 29, 2027 Sixth Form families are invited to celebrate the Class of 2027 as they graduate and become part of the Westminster alumni network, where they will forever have Martlet connections and friends. One of the highlights of the day is Diploma Passing on the Sixth Form Lawn, when students find the diploma with their name on it and step out of the circle, signifying their graduation!

The Westminster Fund Parent and family support plays a vital role in sustaining and enhancing the Westminster experience. The Westminster Fund is the school’s top annual fundraising priority and accounts for approximately 8–10% of Westminster’s operating budget each year. It helps support the people and programs that benefit every student on Williams Hill.

Our goal is for 100% of parents to participate in giving to The Westminster Fund at a level that is meaningful to their family every year. Families may choose to direct their support to the area of greatest need or to programs that inspire them most: athletics, the arts, financial aid, or faculty support. Every gift, regardless of size, helps strengthen the Westminster community and reflects a shared commitment to the school’s mission.
