These are some of the sounds, sights, events and emotions that distinguish Westminster as Mother Fair—a college where students are challenged and supported to develop the competencies, commitments and characteristics of humans at their best, a college whose alumni and friends have made the deeply experiential and collaborative education possible for hundreds of students each year.

I am grateful for your participation in this education. The Honor Roll of Giving recognizes and salutes each of you who donated this year—and we do so with deep gratitude.

This year, more than $5 million was given to Westminster, funding that helped advance the College’s strategic progress. More than $1.6 million of those gifts was designated to the College’s endowment and included the funding of 20 new scholarships. Your gifts of money or stock helped the College achieve national recognition as an institution where students graduate ready for lives of success and leadership. Your gifts this year helped us award more than $27 million in financial aid for entering and continuing students and to provide emergency funds when students needed them. Your generosity enabled us to continue the Hoyt Science Center renovation and expansion, to refresh learning spaces in Thompson-Clark, and to begin the replacement of the bridge on the pathway to the Field Station. Generous donors like you helped provide outstanding digital resources for research and teaching and fund student learning and service trips to Alaska, Arizona, South Carolina and the Dominican Republic.

The commitment of Titan alumni and friends has sustained Westminster College since its historic founding in 1852 and has helped maintain its stability even today, 171 years later. It’s the Titan tradition of giving back and paying it forward that keeps the Westminster story alive for new generations of students. » ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Endowed scholarships are an integral part of the educational landscape, embodying the values of philanthropy, community support and the belief in the transformative power of education. These scholarships provide financial support to deserving students who may not have the means to pursue a college education.

During the 2022-2023 academic year, Westminster was pleased to add 20 endowed funds, totaling $950,000, in new gifts to the endowment for scholarship and program support (see page 20 to learn more about the individual scholarships). Endowed scholarships bolster the endowment, which currently sits at $132.7 million. The generous gifts signal a solid investment in Westminster’s students, its mission and its future.

WESTMINSTER RECEIVED AN “IT’S ON US PA” GRANT to combat campus sexual assault.

The $37,674 grant will be used to increase awareness and educational efforts for sexual assault prevention.

THE THREE-STORY LABORATORY ADDITION to Westminster’s Hoyt Science Center was awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v4 certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, marking the College’s commitment to environmental sustainability. This is Westminster’s first LEED-certified building. The LEED rating system was developed by the USGBC to assess and recognize buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and humanhealth performance.

WESTMINSTER’S ONLINE RN TO BSN COMPLETION PROGRAM went live in 2023, providing a pathway for registered nurses to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees. In as few as five semesters, students can complete an online curriculum that focuses on such topics as leadership, pathophysiology, advanced assessment and community nursing.

THE BUHL REGIONAL HEALTH FOUNDATION awarded Westminster with a $93,000 grant to strengthen the nursing education program.

THE LAWRENCE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS approved $250,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to expand and enhance Westminster College’s nursing program. Funds were used to establish the RN-BSN Completion Program and will also support the development of a nursing simulation lab.

WESTMINSTER RECEIVED A $20,000 GRANT through Pennsylvania’s Hunger-Free Campus Initiative to help address food insecurity issues on campus. Westminster is one of the 28 institutions from across the state representing the first cohort of awardees.

WESTMINSTER’S CULTURAL CENTER OFFICIALLY OPENED during fall 2022, providing a dedicated space where all students can gather to find support, encouragement and learn about the College’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. The center provides a venue for speakers, forums and other cultural programs, and also functions as a study and lounge space.

FORBES AWARDED WESTMINSTER a distinctive A- grade in its 2023 College Financial Grades report, signaling the institution’s solid financial footing. More than 900 non-profit schools were assessed. Westminster was one of only 23 schools from Pennsylvania—and one of six from Western Pennsylvania—that achieved an A-range grade.

The 1852 Society recognizes the individuals who contributed $1,000 or more during the 2022-2023 fiscal year. The 1852 Society includes members of the 1852 Founders Club, the 1852 Leadership Club, the 1852 Tower Club, the 1852 Westminster Club and the 1852 President’s Club.

TO GIVE

THE EDUCATION SPACE IS THE BIGGEST RECIPIENT of our charitable giving. I donated a large sum to my late husband’s school in order to establish a scholarship in his name. In doing so, I was asked to join their board of trustees and I was able to see first hand how important it is to create the ability to achieve an education when otherwise it could not have happened. I learned so much about institutional advancement, managing the endowment and participating in a positive way and decided I wanted to do the same with my own school. Today I am a trustee for Westminster, as well as the new chair of the Institutional Advancement Committee. Of course, we’ve endowed a scholarship, which I know will be of great import to the lives of the recipients.

It’s inspiring how effectively we graduate first-generation students and how well they get on post-graduation.

Westminster is also one of the first colleges in the U.S. to be completely co-ed and, as a woman, I find this incredibly inspirational.

deep. It’s a long story, beginning in the early 1920s, when Dave’s grandparents met and fell in love at the College. New Wilmington is Mary Lynn’s hometown, and her father served as Westminster’s director of admissions. Westminster is where Mary Lynn’s mother and both brothers earned degrees, and it’s where she and Dave served on the dean of the chapel’s staff under Judd McConnell. It’s where we both developed friendships with peers that we still cherish.

Westminster’s education was, for each of us, both formative and nourishing in academics, in athletics and in the musical arts. Finally, it’s where we met and fell in love 50 years after Dave’s grandparents matriculated.

The excellent liberal arts education we received at Westminster is the foundation of all we have done since graduating. It encouraged our curiosity, cultivated our spiritual values, nourished an ability to see the world from multiple perspectives, expanded our capacity to navigate conflicts productively, and strengthened a deep desire to serve others. The world desperately needs institutions that nurture these attributes and values—and we are proud that our alma mater is among them.

gratitude. I am grateful to Westminster, specifically to the faculty of Westminster, for preparing me for life after college.

The education I received and lessons I learned—both inside and outside of the classroom—prepared me to succeed in law school and in my career. I recognize the role Westminster played in my life and I wanted to give back.

Westminster has an extraordinary faculty who embody Westminster College. HAVING ATTENDED WESTMINSTER, and being part of a long line of family members who have been positively impacted by the College, I realize the importance of a liberal arts program which provides opportunities for students to deepen their faith and be challenged to greater understand, experience and respond to the needs of the world in which they live.

During his years teaching at Westminster, my father felt strongly that field experiences were invaluable for bringing academic learning to life.

Therefore we established The Rev. Dr. Joseph M. Hopkins ‘40 Mission and Ministry Endowed Fund in his memory to help do just that. Our hope is to continue inspiring the next generation of Westminster students, of various disciplines, by helping to provide them with real-life opportunities to learn outside the classroom and grow in their faith, thereby broadening their education and impact on the world around them. We give in order to create the opportunity to provide a legacy for other Westminster students, a legacy which has impacted our family in such a viable way.

Endowed Scholarships Awards, Prizes & Programs

T

he following endowed funds were established during the 2022-2023 fiscal year through contributions from alumni and friends of Westminster College for the purpose of providing supplemental sources of financial assistance to students who

meet the criteria set by the donors.

Becker/Adams Family Scholarship

Environment/Community Impact Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this scholarship was established in 2023 by Edmund Rose Becker and Kathleen Adams Becker in memory of Edmund’s parents, Randy and Marjorie Becker. The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial assistance for a promising student with financial need who is majoring in mathematics or sociology.

The Environment/Community Impact Scholarship Fund will be established at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., with an initial gift established through the equal generosity of Craig and Sharon Dimon and David and Kathleen Sarver. This fund, established in honor of Dr. Helen Boylan-Funari, will be in support of Westminster and the ongoing need to minimize students’ college debt upon graduation. Dr. Boylan-Funari, a first-generation college student, grew up in rural McKean County, Pa., where the Allegheny National Forest was her playground and laboratory.

She completed a B.S. in environmental science from Westminster College and a Ph.D. in environmental/ analytical chemistry from Duquesne University. She returned to Westminster College as a faculty member in 2001 where she collaborates with students on hands-on learning related to the environment and the community.

Domeracki Family Scholarship With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this scholarship was established in 2022 by Craig and Susan Domeracki, to provide financial assistance for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college. The primary objective of this endowment is to support a first generation Westminster student(s) with financial need from the Erie, Pa., area who is concentrating in the fields of economics, political science or nursing.

Dorothy M. Durek ’69 Endowed Scholarship With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this scholarship was established in 2023 in memory of Dorothy M. Durek to provide financial assistance for a promising undergraduate student seeking higher education at Westminster College. Ms. Durek graduated from Westminster College in 1969 and was a teacher in the Sharon School District for many years.

Entrepreneurial Values Scholarship This scholarship was established in 2022 by John G. Hepler to provide financial assistance for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college. The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster students with financial need who are participants in the Westminster Entrepreneurial Center, and to encourage the traits and behaviors that lead to success as an entrepreneur.

Verna L. (Scarazzo) Fabian ’52 Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was established in 2022 by Verna L. (Scarazzo) Fabian ’52, Albert Fabian and Nicholas and Evelyn Scarazzo to provide financial assistance for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college. The mission of Westminster College is to help men and women develop competencies, commitments and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best, and the liberal arts tradition is the foundation of the curriculum continually designed to serve this mission in a rapidly changing world. The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster students with financial need who are concentrating in the field of business.

Elizabeth Isabel Fey Memorial Scholarship This fund was established in 2023 by Dr. Gail Fey, who considers her undergraduate years at Westminster to be some of the most blessed and enjoyable of her life and career. She achieved a B.A. in English while designing a senior honors project

With my established scholarship, I hope that I can make the cost of college easier for future students. I want to ensure that more people have access to the same quality education that I had. I recently attended a gala with the great leadership and alumni network of Westminster, and I am confident, more than ever, that the future and leadership vision are strong. It is hard to drive through New Wilmington or visit the campus without all of the memories flooding back. I am filled with pride to be a Titan. I am thankful to be able to have the opportunity to assist in the future, growth and welfare of future Titans for years to come!

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS to accomplish under the guidance of Dr. James Perkins. Subsequently, she went on to work with the federal government, earn an M.S. and Ph.D. at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and enjoy a career with IBM. Eventually, she retired from corporate life to teach college. Gail and her mother, Elizabeth, whom this scholarship honors, had an extremely close relationship full of mutual love and admiration. Elizabeth longed to go fulltime to college, but was not able to do so although she was a lifelong seeker of knowledge. It is with deepest gratitude for the blessing and guidance of her mother that Gail has established this fund.

Lois (Rennie) Guehring ’64 Endowed Scholarship The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial assistance for a promising undergraduate student seeking higher education. This scholarship was established in 2022 by James T. and Lois (Rennie) Guehring ’64 to provide financial assistance for a promising undergraduate student seeking higher education at Westminster College. This fund was formalized in support of Westminster and the ongoing need to minimize students’ college debt upon graduation.

Dr. Bryan Hooks and Family Scholastic Achievement Scholarship With his dream to always “give back,” Dr. Bryan Hooks ’01 is an orthopedic surgeon and Air Force Officer veteran. He is forever grateful for the foundation, education and opportunities his Westminster Bachelor of Science degree afforded him. He excelled in academics, leadership and philanthropy. Following his education at Westminster, he also did a total joint replacement fellowship at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic.

He married Angela (Efler) Hooks who earned her BSN from Kent State University in 2006. They are the proud parents of four beautiful children.

The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial assistance to a promising Westminster College junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.00 who is pursuing a pre-medical, health sciences, nursing or education degree.

Janice G. Jeletic ’80 Scholarship This award is given to a rising Westminster College sophomore with financial need and may be renewable up to an additional two years, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA at Westminster College. This Fund was established in 2021 by Janice G. Jeletic, a 1980 graduate with a B.A. in English. She confirmed her calling to a career in communications and marketing as editor-in-chief of the Westminster Argo (student yearbook) for three years. She also was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She dedicates this scholarship to her parents, Frank and Phyllis Jeletic, who loved the College and all that it offers to students and their families.

Laura Russell Loomis ’53 and Jane Loomis Smith ’80 Endowed Scholarship The primary objective of this endowed scholarship is to provide financial support to a first-year student with financial need who is considering or pursuing a degree in education, the sciences or history at Westminster College. Established in 2022, this fund gratefully acknowledges the friendships, education and spiritual development Westminster College offered Laura Russell Loomis ’53 and Jane Loomis Smith ’80. This fund also honors the spirit and perseverance of the students, faculty and staff during the pandemic of 2020-2022.

Roger and Helen Metzler Scholarship The primary objective of this endowment is to provide merit-based support to a Westminster student(s) who is concentrating in the fields of physics, engineering physics or chemistry. This fund was formalized in 2022

by Roger and Helen Metzler in support of Westminster students and in recognition of academic achievement and the ongoing need to minimize students’ college debt upon graduation.

Gordy Opitz ’79 and Linda Opitz Endowed Scholarship This fund was established in 2022 by Gordy and Linda Opitz. Gordy Opitz ’79 graduated with a degree in education and played basketball and baseball earning seven varsity letters. After teaching and coaching for three years, he started his business career with Comdoc, Inc. (office technology).

Throughout his 38-year career, he held several leadership positions and was the CEO and president from 2007-2021 when he retired. The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial assistance to a promising Westminster College student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college and is actively involved in extracurricular activities.

Anthony “Tony” L. Perrotta Sr. Endowed Scholarship This fund was established in 2022 by Louis M. Perrotta ’94 and Kristi M. Perrotta ’97 in memory of his father, Anthony Tony L. Perrotta. The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial assistance to a promising Westminster College student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college and is actively involved in extracurricular activities. First preference will be given to a student who is majoring in music, pre-law or elementary education and resides in Lawrence County, Pa.

W. Rick Reiber ’74 and Diane J. Reiber Endowed Scholarship The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster student(s), with financial need, who are residents of Lawrence or Mercer counties and have demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities.

This fund was formalized in 2022 by Rick and Diane Reiber in support of Westminster students and in recognition of the ongoing need to minimize students’ college debt upon graduation. The Reiber family are lifelong residents of New Wilmington, Pa., and have demonstrated these characteristics through Rick’s involvement as an active member of the TTO Executive Committee and as strong supporters of Titan athletics as well as building a successful group of restaurants within the community.

Timothy and Anne Filer Schenz Endowed Scholarship The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster student(s) who are interested in the fields of chemistry or nursing. This fund was formalized in 2022 by Timothy and Anne Filer Schenz in support of Westminster students and in recognition of the ongoing need to minimize students’ college debt upon graduation.

Dale E. Swift ’68 Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established in 2023 in memory of Dale E. Swift to provide financial assistance for a promising undergraduate student seeking higher education at Westminster College. Mr. Swift graduated magna cum laude from Westminster in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS He went on to receive an M.S. degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois and worked in private industry doing mathematics and scientific programming for over-the-horizon radar and underwater sonar systems.

Mr. Swift was in the Army and served as a Military Policeman for 11 months in Vietnam. He had an avid lifetime interest in many sports and followed his alma maters’ teams closely. He was also able to attain a Gold Master Level rating in bridge.

Van Gorder Family Memorial Scholarship This fund was established by Charles F. Van Gorder ’78 in memory of Maurine Smith Van Gorder ’40 and James E. Van Gorder. The primary objective of this endowment is to expand the diversity of the Westminster community and to support a student with financial need who is affiliated with a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) church.

Whitehall Presbyterian Church Scholarship This fund was formalized in 2022 by the Session of Whitehall Presbyterian Church and its members in support of Westminster students and in support of academic achievement and the ongoing need to support spiritual growth.

John D. ’74 and Deborah Hall Zupanovich ’76 Scholarship The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster student(s), with financial need, who are concentrating in the fields of chemistry or biology. This fund was formalized in 2022 by John and Deborah Zupanovich in support of Westminster students and in recognition of the ongoing need to minimize students’ college debt upon graduation.

A closing message to the Westminster community Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express our appreciation for your financial support of the College during the past year. Your gifts helped Westminster move forward in fulfillment of our historic mission and in reaching out to students from across this region and beyond.

During the past year, Titan alumni and friends provided more than $5 million in gifts to support student financial aid, academic and student life programming, capital projects, and endowment growth. Members of the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Council continued their tradition of 100% participation in giving to support the mission of the College. These gifts reflect the beliefs of our donors that the educational experiences students have at Westminster prepare them for lives of success and purpose, as has been true for more than 170 years.

The College’s mission “to help students develop competencies, commitments and characteristics that have distinguished human beings at their best” is realized through the dedication of our students, faculty and staff. As students attend class, prepare assignments, conduct research, and complete internships and practicums, they are readying themselves for what will come next.

Some compete on athletic teams, while others share their talents through music, speech, theater and art activities. Leadership is honed through participation in student government, clubs and organizations, and fraternities and sororities. Working with the guidance of a trusted faculty or staff advisor or coach, Titans pursue their dreams and accomplish their goals.

The philanthropy of our alumni and friends make all of these experiences possible. As we look back at 2022-2023 with gratitude, we look forward to the coming academic year with excitement.
