To all of our Titan Patrons!!!
I would like to welcome you to “Shrek, The Musical,” I really hope you enjoy the show! Although we have produced this show in the past, the production staff thought this was the perfect way to return from a 2-year absence from musical theatre at West Mifflin. We started the process of auditions in September and since January, the staff and students have been building sets, preparing the orchestra, and rehearsing the songs and scenes – thank you students of the cast, crew, and orchestra for your hard work. I want to also thank all the staff, parents, and students for making all of this happen through volunteer time and fundraising. Thanks also to the businesses and families that continue to assist us (through ads and donations) in our efforts to expose students to the arts so they may gain an understanding of humanity as they can only through the unique opportunity that is the theater. No matter the show or the content, the stage is a place to learn about people. How to interact, support, empathize, cheer for, ignore, or when all else fails – coexist. After so many months of social distancing, it is sometimes difficult to remember how to interact with real people and can be scary at times to be ourselves. Sometimes it is easier to be an Ogre, build a wall, and do a ‘one man conga line,’ but does that really give us a chance at that ‘big, bright, beautiful world’ that we all long for? The fairy tale creatures of Dulac sum it up best when they tell us to “let your freak flags fly!”
Again, thank you all for your support and assistance in producing a great show! From the moment you walk in the doors to the final bows and the finale, I hope you are entertained!
Mr. Devon Smeal ProducerIn theatre, the definition of an obstacle is a problem or challenge that gets in the way of a character trying to achieve his or her goal. After watching the news for several weeks back at the beginning of 2020 and hearing about Covid 19, I wondered if it would impact our production of “The Addams Family”. Little did I know that on March 13, 2020, it would drastically change our lives. When Mr. Licht made the announcement that school would be closed for two weeks, I frantically began planning a new schedule and dates for the musical. Unfortunately, “The Addams Family” never was performed in front of an audience and I was devastated for myself, the students, and staff who worked tirelessly to put up the show. This year I battled with whether to attempt to put on a musical production in all this uncertainty. However, after months of research, discussions with the staff, we agreed upon “Shrek the Musical”. Now what? How do we pull this off when our students have not had a proper vocal, acting, instrumental, and technical theatre education in almost two years? This production has had its share of challenges, nevertheless, we have done it! We have overcome our obstacles and accomplished our goal! We were able to give the students on stage, behind the scenes, and in the pit the experience that they have missed for two years!
The cast has been such a joy to work with throughout the production and I praise them for accepting the challenge of putting on a show in this time of uncertainty. It is so inspiring to see our students grow into responsible, respectful young adults, learn about music theatre, and watch them become a family. I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating and working with our outstanding musical production staff. Thank you to all the students in the cast, pit, and crew, for they have awakened musical theatre in the West Mifflin Area High School auditorium again! So tonight, know that everyone involved has given so much to bring “Shrek the Musical” to life for all of you in the audience. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting us and giving us this opportunity to shine tonight.

Welcome back to live theatre! Audiences are set to enjoy the entertainment from performing ensembles of all kinds for the first time since before the beginning of the pandemic. Please remember the following guidlines for live performance so that all in attendance can enjoy our show.
1. Be on time. It shows respect for the actors on the stage and for your fellow theatergoers.
2. Go to the restroom before you sit down or during intermission, not during the performance. It will not only be disruptive to persons seated in your row and the rows around you, but also to the actors and musicians performing.
3. Unwrap any cough drops or candy before the show begins. The only sounds one should hear at a performance should be coming from the stage.
4. Do not fidget. It can be very distracting to persons sitting around you.
5. Keep your shoes on. Really wherever you are in public, unless you are in the park perhaps, your shoes should be kept on.
6. Do not eat potato chips, pretzels, or any other crunchy snack during a live performance.
7. Do not talk during a live performance once it has begun.
8. Take your hat off if you are wearing one that might block another person’s view.
9. Avoid wearing too much perfume or aftershave and scented lotions. Although breath mints help when sitting close to others!
10. Respect the space of the persons on either side of you. Try to stay within the boundaries of your own chair; do not take both arm rests.
11. Stay awake. Snoring, or leaning your head on a neighbor’s shoulder when you fall asleep is absolutely unacceptable.
12. Turn off your cell phone. As soon as you sit down, turn of your cell phone and put it away. Enjoy the experience of a live performance!
13. Do not sing along. Unless asked to sing along by the actors on the stage, refrain from singing, humming, or whistling the tunes you hear.
14. Be receptive to the performers! Do show your appreciation by laughing and clapping at the appropriate times! They are so happy to see you have fun!
By Patricia Napier-Fitzpatrick, www.etiquette-ny.comThank you for your attendance tonight and for showing your respect for our hard working students by following these guidlines for audience etiquette. We hope that you thoroughly enjoy our production of "Shrek the Musical."
