From the Producer:
I would like to welcome you to “Mean Girls” and I really hope you enjoy the show!
The premise and storyline of “Mean Girls” was virtually unknown to me before this year. I must admit that, from what I did know, I thought it was probably just silly and crude. However, after reading the script and watching the show in preparation for conducting the orchestra, I found that the dialogue and songs speak a message to us about what too many people need to hear – being nice is cool. The show tells us that it’s “easy to be mean” and too often that is the case, especially in schools. While I certainly don’t want any bullies to be hit by a bus to learn that lesson, I have found this modern musical to be worth performing and hope you enjoy the music, the acting, the occasional “shock factor” jokes, and yes, the message that comes with it all.
As always, thank you all for your support and assistance in producing a great show!
Mr. Devon Smeal Producer“Calling somebody else fat won’t make you any skinner. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter.” Judging others won’t make you better than them. This is just one message that Mean GirlsHigh School Edition presents to the audience. Mean Girls tackles the complex and realistic life of the typical high school student and is based on Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabees; which exemplifies the damaging effects bullying, social cliques, and peer pressure can have on teenagers. Tina Fey is the creative force behind the 2004 original screenplay and Broadway show, which was premiered in 2018.
I always tell my students that the purpose of theatre is to get the audience to think about an intended message. During the rehearsal process, I had the opportunity to have many discussions with the cast about how they feel when they are put in similar situations as the characters in the show. Some of the messages they have learned are: staying true to themselves, embracing girl power, building friendships, accepting others for who they are, being honest and loyal, and not letting social media control their lives.
Mean Girls High School Edition was not my original choice for the Spring Musical Production. When we did not get the rights to my original idea, I had to go back to the drawing board. I decided to give Mean Girls another look after reflecting about how much the students pestered me since last year about doing this show. I still was not convinced this was the right show for us; I did not feel it. But I decided to challenge myself to bring this show to fruition for the students. Through this process, I have learned to love this show and the songs, even if there is not one that you will find familiar. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching my students bring this story to life. On another note, this is honestly one of the most difficult shows that I have ever directed, and it would not be on this stage without the most amazing, talented, and dedicated production team and students.
To everyone: I have to say that I am very fortunate to work with you! We have persevered and overcame quite a few challenges to get this show ready. Congratulations to each and every one of you! Enjoy every moment as you perform. We are so very excited to bring this show to you and hope that you find our performance fetch. Yes, I am trying to make fetch happen.
