It gives me great pleasure to revisit the Golden Age of Musicals and to present the classic musical Once Upon a Mattress to you. Once Upon a Mattress is based on the adaptation Hans Christian Andersen's "The Princess and the Pea” and was written by composer Mary Rodgers and lyricists Marshall Barer and Jay Thompson. Mattress was first performed as a one-act at a summer camp in the Poconos in 1958 before it was later developed into a full-length Broadway musical. During the 1960’s Tony Awards it competed for best musical. Mary Rodgers, the daughter of famous American composer Richard Rodgers, competed against her father’s Sound of Music for best musical. Sound of Music tied with Fiorello for the win. One of my all-time favorite performers, Carol Burnett starred in the lead role as Princess Winnifred in 1959, marking her first Broadway appearance and skyrocketing her career in show business. It was revived several times on Broadway and boasted big stars. Winnifred was played by Sarah Jessica Parker in 1996 and the most recent revival 2024, starred Sutton Foster.
Moliere once said, “The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it”. Well, the cast, crew, pit orchestra, and professional staff have bounced back from losing the use of the auditorium this year due to a fire. I commend you for never losing hope and pulling through to put up such a brilliant show. A special thank you to Dr. Minford, Mr. Campana, Middle School Staff and Custodians for being so welcoming over the past several months. A big thank you to Mrs. Ruffing and Mrs. Sanders for sharing the auditorium with us as they are busy preparing for their upcoming musical Seussical. To my senior cast members, I will miss you dearly. You have stuck by my side through thick and thin the past four years helping to build back the musical production after the pandemic. Your contribution to this program will never be forgotten.
Thank you for supporting the students of the music department for attending our performance. I hope that you enjoy our rendition of Once Upon a Mattress!
