Westley Richards Stalking Rifle
This rifle, and all those like it, that we build on an entirely bespoke basis for our clients, will perform flawlessly in the field and wear gracefully with use.
The Westley Richards magazine rifle has been the benchmark for sportsmen stalking deer of every species since before the Great War. The passing of time has only refined and improved this classic of its type, which is traditional in configuration and hand-built with all the care that goes into all our double rifles and shotguns.
This Mauser-action, Westley Richards in .300 Winchester Magnum is as capable of cleanly dispatching a highland red stag at 300 yards as it is of tackling all the plains game animals of Africa, from dik-dik to eland, which explains its popularity among modern sportsmen on every continent.
The double square bridge action facilitates the mounting of a ‘scope for precision long-range shooting and the iron sights offer point-and-shoot convenience out to 400 yards.
The chequered side panels and stock profile used here closely resemble the iconic Westley Richards .425 rifles of the interwar period, though the quality and attention to every detail applied in the construction of our new rifles is far in excess of even those classics.
With deluxe scroll engraving and game scenes throughout, featuring red stag and roe buck, as well as tastefully light use of gold inlay to enhance the glossy black and colour-hardened steel surfaces, the hand-rubbed oil finish adds warmth and depth to the super deluxe-grade walnut stock.

In Collaboration with Ray Mears...
He cheerfully told Stephen that his, now broken in, Bishop Hill Bag is “…the best camera bag I have ever owned.”
The Bishop Bag has been a mainstay of our leather travel goods range for years and recently it has been joined by a now larger capacity version, created in part to match the input of a Westley Richards aficionado with very specific needs.
Bushcraft and survival expert Ray Mears is well-known to audiences all around the world for his popular television programmes but few people realise he started his career as a photo-journalist. While in conversation with Stephen Humphries, our Creative Director, on a visit to the Westley Richards factory, the two hit upon an idea for a collaboration.
Ray still carries photographic kit everywhere he goes and was in need of a camera bag that would be discreet, robust, longlived and suited to his mobile lifestyle. He likes to keep all his expensive camera equipment with him on flights, then lighten his bag by selecting what he needs for each day on-location.
Enamoured with our Bishop Bag, Stephen mentioned to Ray that the company was soon to release a taller, wider and deeper version, the Bishop Hill Bag. Being in its final stages, we adjusted the final iteration to accept a commercially available interior-partition to protect his camera bodies and lenses.
Ray opted for leather, over the lighter canvas alternative, as he values the longevity of the material. Cameras are hard
objects, which sit in the same place every time they are packed. “Leather will adapt to that and wear harder. Other materials will eventually fail”, he said.
Ray fully subscribes to our company ethos of in-house designed, handmade products, created in Birmingham. While other brands increasingly farm out production to Asia, Ray feels strongly about the importance of authenticity. “It wouldn’t be a Westley Richards if it was not made in your Midlands factory”. That is as true of our luggage as it is of our guns and rifles.
Ray’s ‘Bishop’ camera bag works because it doesn’t advertise the presence of expensive camera equipment, which might tempt thieves. He is more relaxed travelling with a generic-looking bag, especially one which will age gracefully and gain a patina that does not draw attention to itself.
This is what Ray considers a bag for life in a throw-away age. Quality, traditional crafts, natural materials, which are repairable, restorable, and improve with time, rather than deteriorate, are the hallmarks of all our leather goods.
On a recent trip to Ray’s home county in southern England to capture his woodland portrait, he cheerfully told Stephen that his, now broken in, Bishop Hill Bag is “…the best camera bag I have ever owned”. The ultimate compliment.

Westley Richards Sportsman Knife

A sharp knife, when viewed as a utilitarian tool, is absolutely indispensable to the serious country sportsman. Just as a handbuilt Westley Richards stalking rifle epitomises the pinnacle of the genre, so our knives step above the purely practical, into the realm of best in class.
A great deal of careful consideration was invested in creating our Westley Richards stalking knife. We worked hard to address some of the pitfalls into which others stumble. Our knife had to be the right size, it had to feel comfortable and usable in the hand, the blade had to hold a razor edge, and it had to be handmade in England.
We set out to create the finest iteration of a practical stalking knife it is possible to make. Close inspection of every detail will find it flawless, yet in the hand, in the field, it will perform repeated gralloching duties reliably for a lifetime.
It is not possible to make best-quality bespoke knives in England down to a price. Like our rifles, we build up to our level of quality and artistry, then we reveal what that costs. Compromise is not an option, this knife had to be worthy of the Westley Richards name.
Proportion is the key to a practical knife. Our stalking knife has a three-and-a-quarter inch blade made from RWL34 premium stainless steel and a four-and-a-half inch handle, contoured to
fit the hand and not slip. Construction is full-tang, meaning the steel blank of the blade runs the full length and width of the handle, providing exceptional strength.
The handle scales are carved from walnut, not any walnut, but the very best with which we stock our sporting arms, bedded on olive and ivory G10 handle liners, perfectly shaped, smoothed and finished to our exacting standards. The bolts fastening scales to tang are made from brass as used for our gun cases, polished and then engraved by hand with a design familiar to our best quality guns and rifles.
The knife comes complete in a handmade barked-tanned leather sheath and is available to purchase for £895 | $1,150. We realise that a knife at this price point is a hard thing to justify in practical terms. However, we believe it is fitting to our range to have produced the best knife that can be made.
Just as there is a desire to head into the field with a fine bespoke hunting rifle, perhaps wearing a sports watch costing several thousand pounds, the same quest for perfection in form and function extends to every other aspect of equipment and apparel. Some might argue that the Westley Richards stalking knife is too good to use. We say it is too good not to.
