Our latest collection was shot in England, rather than Africa; the temperate, early spring afternoon highlighting its undoubted cross-over appeal between home life and outdoor pursuits. After all, though safari-inspired and ready for anything, we understand many of our adventurers spend at least as much time walking the dog as they do hunting buffalo. The rocky crags of the Cowdray Estate in West Sussex provide a refreshingly British backdrop for our adventure wear. The dramatic skies, overcast with cloud, remind us that England, like Tanzania, is often inclement and variable in temperature, offering
challenges to our expedition clothing beyond coping with mid-day heat and humiditytriggered perspiration. Cowdray Estate The Home of Fine Country Pursuits Cowdray House is a Grade II listed 22-bedroom country house which is set in 110 acres of private landscaped grounds in the heart of the South Downs National Park. While it offers guests a luxurious stay in exclusive rural surroundings, the house has a warm and welcoming feel be it for larger parties or smaller, more intimate gatherings.
Built by the Seventh Earl of Egmont in the mid-1870s on the site of an old hunting lodge, Cowdray House is a mixture of Tudor, Arts and Crafts, Georgian and Elizabethan architecture. In 1909, the Eighth Earl sold the Cowdray Estate including Cowdray House to Sir Weetman Pearson, who was an engineer, Liberal politician, and mining industrialist. In 1910, Sir Weetman was made Baron Cowdray and in 1917, he became the First Viscount Cowdray. Cowdray has now been owned by the Pearson family for four generations. The house still retains its family feel with portraits of the Pearson family adorning the baronial Buck Hall and other areas of the house. The House is also a perfect base from which to take advantage of all the activities available on the Estate. These famously include simulated game shooting at Hownhall, Cowdray’s award-winning shooting school, where the great and the good come to hone their techniques and receive one-to-one tuition. There is also the opportunity to explore Cowdray Ruins, one of England’s most important early Tudor Houses visited by both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The estate is also world renowned as the home of British polo where you can be entertained at exhilarating matches throughout the summer season. Being just over 1 hour from London, Cowdray is the ultimate destination to relax and enjoy England’s finest country pursuits.

‘Plains Game’ Magazine Rifle
Our customer’s starting point for this newly-built and rather spectacular Westley Richards magazine rifle was the superlative .300 Winchester Magnum cartridge, loaded by RWS with its 180 grain Uni Classic bullet. Built on a new, double square bridge Mauser action, so often the starting point for quality boltrifles over the last century. Our actions are purpose built in Germany to exacting standards. The exhibition-grade stock blank has been handformed to fit exactly, with an elegant, practical and perfectly proportioned pistol-hand, with steel grip trap cap and ebony finial. The figure in the wood gains intensity as it flows through the hand into the butt, finishing in swirls and clouds of black, with deep amber contrasts. The butt is finished with a solid rubber pad, wrapped in grained, polished leather. Both sling swivels are fitted into the wood (rather than having the forward one attached to a barrel
band) and the stock has a modern style cheek-piece, with drop set for the use of a ‘scope. Engraving was undertaken by Anja Dammerheyn and features deluxe scroll work and a game scene, featuring a magnificent kudu bull. Gold inlay is used sparingly to imbue a degree of extra finish, without ostentation. The kudu is encapsulated by a narrow band of gold and the serial number is inlaid in gold on the guard. Scrolls extend onto every area of metal, including the bespoke ‘scope mounts, bolt and trigger. Equipped with a Swarovski Z8i, the order specified no iron sights, keeping the profile clean and purposeful. The practical, light canvas case with leather trim is lined with green Alcantara and fitted with the latest Westley Richards trade label in black leather with gold-embossed detail. The package is completed with a set of tools, cleaning rod, sling and ammunition pouch, all purpose-made and of the highest quality.

The Westley Richards leather shop is unique among gunmakers. When customers with vintage guns say they are seeking a ‘Charles Osborne gun case’, or a ‘W.R. Pape gun case’, what they are actually seeking is a gun case with a trade label in the lid by that maker. Historically, gun makers did not make cases; they bought them in from wholesale suppliers. They still do. Westley Richards alone has a department within the factory that makes the cases into which our finished guns and rifles are fitted. Every case is made to special order for each one. Nothing is standard. Our case makers and leather workers are attuned to the sentiments of our gunmakers and customers. This way, the entire package, from chopper-lump barrels to case straps and buckles achieves a level of harmony impossible to replicate elsewhere. Working on large tables inside the Victorian, brick-walled factory, our specialist artisans work tirelessly to produce uncompromising quality in an un-hurried, traditional manner; as befitting a purveyor of the finest manifestations of their type. That same care and attention goes into the creation of all our travel and sporting leather goods. The gunmaking skills and safari-leading experiences of our staff inform the design values and materials procurement that combine to make our leather goods the best in the field. At Westley Richards, every leather item we sell with our unique branding on it is designed, cut and stitched in our Birmingham factory. It is a true Westley Richards product, made by hand, in England, and you cannot buy another one quite like it anywhere else in the world. Leather goods shouldn’t have a finite lifespan (not within the lifetime of the purchaser at least) nor compromise on fitness for purpose. Rather than weaken with age, our travel bags, belts and slips become more comfortable and characterful, making them more, not less, satisfying to take on a flight or lift off the gun bus, as the years pass.
