Collections 2027
The Sporting Life Guns, rifles, clothing and leather goods shaped by more than two centuries of tradition, camaraderie, adventure, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
With the sporting season well underway, Collections 2027 begins on one of Scotland’s premier grouse moors, where our leather luggage and sporting kit are captured in the surroundings for which so much of it was designed. From there, we travel to Tanzania to showcase our latest safari collection. At the very heart of these pages is leather. For generations, Westley Richards has made exceptional leather goods for sportsmen and explorers, a tradition that continues today in our Birmingham workshops. From gun cases and cartridge bags to luggage designed for a lifetime of travel, each piece is made in-house by our own leatherworkers, combining traditional skills with designs that continue to evolve for modern use. The same philosophy runs through our clothing: timeless design, heritage materials, purposeful detail and proven outdoor capability. Together, our clothing, leather goods and sporting arms reflect more than two centuries of experience equipping the great and the good for life in the field and beyond.

The Sutherland Born from a lifetime of sporting travel, the Sutherland has become one of our defining designs and, for many, the ultimate safari kit bag.
The Sutherland Bag’s origins lie naturally within a company that has spent more than two hundred years outfitting pioneers and adventurers, and whose guns, rifles and equipment have accompanied generations of hunters into Africa and across the world. Safari places particular demands on travel luggage. Journeys frequently involve light aircraft, four-wheel drives and irregular stowage, with bags moved repeatedly between camps and lodges. The Sutherland was designed with precisely this kind of travel in mind. Sufficiently structured to retain its shape when only part filled, yet flexible enough to accommodate the inevitable demands of restricted compartments, the Sutherland combines practicality with the quiet assurance of a piece designed to improve with use. Available in three sizes, there is a version suited to
everything from a sporting weekend in Scotland to a month in Africa. Its generous opening makes packing straightforward, while the uncomplicated construction and robust handles and fittings reflect the purposeful approach that has always defined Westley Richards sporting kit. Over the years, the Sutherland has also lent itself to numerous interpretations by our leather department. Alongside our popular leather and canvas versions sit bags made entirely in leather, suede and, on occasion, carefully selected exotic hides. Limited editions allow our designers and leatherworkers to explore new materials and finishes while retaining the proportions and character that make this safari kit bag instantly recognisable. Uniquely among Britain’s gunmakers, Westley Richards makes the Sutherland and its peers entirely

in-house at our Birmingham factory. Each bag passes through the hands of our own leatherworkers, with individual makers responsible for laying out hides, cutting, stitching, assembling and finishing much of the piece. This is an increasingly rare approach to manufacturing and one that gives us total control over both the quality of what we make and its continued development.
Made in Birmingham, conceived for adventure and built to gather the marks of a lifetime of travel. The Sutherland sits at the heart of an evolving collection of Westley Richards leather goods that encompass travel luggage, field bags, ammunition wallets, gun and rifle slips, cleaning rolls and other field sports essentials. They all share the same purpose: to make exceptionally well the things that accompany a sporting life. Of the collection, the Sutherland Bag perhaps expresses that philosophy better than any. Made in Birmingham, conceived for adventure and built to gather the marks of a lifetime of travel, it remains the definitive Westley Richards safari bag.

The Mini Explora A refined interpretation of the Explora Rucksack, reworked for ladies who share a passion for sporting and country life.
The Explora Rucksack has become one of the most recognisable Westley Richards designs, equally at home travelling through an airport, carried across country or accompanying a day in the field. Taking its name from the iconic Westley Richards Explora ball-and-shot gun, first introduced in 1903 as a versatile hunting companion, the rucksack shares something of the same spirit. Robust, practical and unmistakably adventurous in character, it carries everything required for the day while leaving both hands free. For Autumn, the Westley Richards design team has revisited the Explora. The result is the smaller, lighter and more refined Mini Explora. This is more than a scaled-down version of the original. Every element has been reconsidered, with finer shoulder straps, a slimmer profile and carefully reduced
hardware creating a simple and elegant bag while retaining the recognisable construction and detailing of the Explora design. The emphasis shifts subtly from rugged expedition utility towards a versatile day bag, without losing the practicality that defines the well-loved original. Made entirely in our Birmingham factory, the Mini Explora demonstrates the advantage of designing and manufacturing our leather goods under one roof. Our designers work directly with the leatherworkers who make the finished piece, allowing patterns, materials and construction to be developed together and at speed. Details can be tested, adjusted and refined at the bench until the balance between appearance, comfort and utility feels right. The result is compact without being precious, and its smaller dimensions, finer straps and Sam Browne

pocket closure make it particularly suited to everyday use. Inside, a bespoke woven lining designed by renowned Westley Richards engraver Paul Lantuch provides another connection to the wider world of the company. It is a bag intended to move easily between town, travel and country, becoming more individual as the leather develops its own patina.
This is more than a scaled-down version of the original Explora. Every element has been reconsidered. The Mini Explora launches in our signature buffalo hide, a new sable brown suede and a special-edition black Niloticus crocodile with distinctive silverplated hardware. Each gives the same design its own individual character. This rucksack also marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Westley Richards leather collection. Alongside the forthcoming Mini Anson, familiar sporting designs are being reconsidered with new proportions, details and uses in mind. Both are unmistakably part of the Westley Richards family; refined evolutions of proven designs. 24 | 25 making the mini explora

The Art of Casemaking Bringing gunmaking and casemaking together under one roof ensures every Westley Richards gun can leave Birmingham with a case worthy of it.
A best gun does not truly leave Westley Richards alone. Its case is the final part of the commission: made to protect it, to accompany it through a lifetime of sport and, when opened, to present the finished gun as its makers intended. The shotgun featured here is one of the latest to leave our Birmingham factory. As its final details were being completed at the benches of our gunmakers, elsewhere in the same building our casemakers and leatherworkers were creating the case in which it would begin its life. Bringing these crafts together under one roof is an important part of the way Westley Richards works today. Traditionally, case-making existed as a craft apart from gunmaking, with cases commissioned from independent specialist makers. In recent years, we have deliberately brought this expertise in-house,
establishing case-making within our own leather department and giving us control over another important element of the finished gun or rifle. The best gun cases require remarkable precision. Every compartment must correspond exactly with the dimensions of the gun and its accessories, while the materials, colours and details of the case should complement the character of the commission itself. An exceptional gun placed in an indifferent case will never look entirely at home. Our craftsmen can produce everything from lightweight traditional leather cases to oak-framed, leather-covered cases fitted with a full complement of tools and accessories. At the other end of the spectrum are entirely bespoke presentation cases, French fitted and finished with exotic hides for some of the most important guns and rifles we make.
34 | 35 making a gun case
The case-making workshop contains materials every bit as considered as those found at the gunmakers’ benches. Naturally tanned hides are selected and cut by hand; saddle-grade straps are worked and finished using traditional tools; rolls of baize and other case fabrics wait alongside locks, hinges and our own brass hardware. From the large Victorian windows, natural light falls across a craft that remains remarkably unchanged in principle.
The fit is exact, the materials complementary and the two bespoke pieces immediately belong together. There is something particularly satisfying about seeing a newly finished Westley Richards gun lowered into a case made specifically for it just yards from where the gun itself was built. The fit is exact, the materials complementary and the two pieces immediately belong together. Made properly, both should endure for many generations. The gun will acquire the marks of use, the leather will darken and soften, and together they will record a century or more of sporting life. 36 | 37 making a gun case

Knives For The Hunt Handmade in England exclusively for Westley Richards, a trio of smallbatch hunting knives launches in distinctive leopard wood.
A good hunting knife is among the simplest and most enduring pieces of field sports equipment. For Collections 2027, Westley Richards introduces three new English-made knives, conceived in partnership with specialist bladesmith Marc Zabroski and made for Westley Richards at his Suffolk workshop. The range comprises the compact ‘Companion Knife’, the versatile ‘Belt Knife’ and the larger ‘Explorer Knife’. The latter takes inspiration from the famous Bowie knife, named after American pioneer Jim Bowie. Together, the three cover a broad range of sporting and outdoor requirements, from an unobtrusive everyday companion to a substantial knife for more demanding use in the field. Developed by Marc in collaboration with Westley Richards Managing Director Anthony AlboroughTregear, each design combines balance, utility and
durability with a quality of finish rarely found in hunting knives made in Britain today. The first release features handles cut from distinctive leopard wood. Richly figured and naturally individual, the grain ensures that no two are quite alike. Future small-batch releases will explore other unusual and carefully selected handle materials, giving each edition its own character. Much like our bespoke guns and rifles, the knives draw on traditional forms but are made by hand, their materials and handwork making each finished piece individual. Each is further distinguished by hand-engraved pins, completed by Westley Richards engravers in our Birmingham gunmaking department. From blade to handle, every knife is forged, shaped, assembled and finished by hand, and accompanied by a handmade leather sheath.
