Parks Information The Parks Department in West Lafayette takes great pride in offering various classes and programs throughout the year.

We strive to create unique, fun, educational experiences for all ages and abilities. Our cancellation policies are in place to ensure that participants clearly understand what to expect when they register for programs.

Program Cancellation Policy If classes are cancelled by the West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department, we will refund all fees. If you cancel your registration at least five business days before the start of the class, you may receive a refund, less a $10.00 processing fee. Since decisions to offer classes are enrollment-dependent, refunds will not be granted for cancellations less than five business days from class start date. Account credits are issued for refunds.

Camp Cancellation Policy Any cancellations to camp registrations must be completed by the date listed on the registration forms. Camp weeks may not be dropped or transferred after the date listed, and you will be financially responsible for any remaining weeks. No refunds or credits will be given for the registration fee.

Preschoolers at Play Cancellation Policy All registrations must be paid in full. Withdrawals or refunds of a single session will result in the four-session $25 discount being removed from the refund amount. Refunds will only be issued as an account credit. Families may receive a refund up until two weeks before the week that your child is registered. After the deadline, no registrations may be transferred or refunded. Make requests in writing to aconner@westlafayette.in.gov.

Wellness Center Membership Cancellation Membership cancellations require written notice and must be submitted five days before the end of the month. There is no refund for cancelling in the middle of a month, and we do not refund for lack of usage. All discounts for facility programs are for members only. Patrons will no longer be eligible for discounts on programs such as camps, youth sports, and swimming lessons, effective the date of cancellation.

Photography Notice When you attend our events, facilities, and parks, you enter an area where photography, audio, and video recording may occur. Photos and videos will be used for the West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department's social media pages, newsletters, program guides, website pages, and other publications.

Aquatics

The West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department's aquatics team is committed to empowering people of all ages to swim confidently and stay safe around water. We understand the value of instilling water safety skills, which is why we offer top-notch swim lessons at affordable prices. Our swimming lessons cater to individuals aged six months and above, and we provide both group and private lessons.

We want to make sure that our young swimmers are safe and confident in the water. That's why we require children ages 5 to 11 to pass a swim test before swimming without a parent or guardian nearby. For those under 5 or unable to pass the test, parents or guardians must always be within arm's reach of their children. And for children under 8, we kindly request that parents or guardians remain in the Aquatics Center. Please take a moment to review the rules posted near the tot-spot and on our website for more information so your family has an enjoyable experience swimming with us.

Swim Lessons

WELLNESS CENTER PRIVATE LESSONS Ages: 3 Years and Older Private swim lessons have many benefits, such as more flexibility with scheduling, customizable goals, and accommodations for special needs. Private lessons are also very helpful for anyone terrified of water or who has experienced water trauma.

A request waitlist is periodically opened, please reach out if you are interested in being added.

Private lessons are purchased in sets of four, 30-minute lessons. The cost is $100 for members of the Wellness Center or $125 for community members.

INSTRUCTORS All swim lesson instructors follow the American Red Cross swimming lesson program Only staff are permitted to teach lessons Instructors have the final say in which level each child needs to attend KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Proper swim attire is required Swim diapers are required for all non-toilet-trained swimmers Arrive on time for the lesson; time will not be made up for tardiness Always check-in Only the child registered for the lesson can attend

All swim sessions were already booked at the time of the Fall/Winter Program Guide publication. But don't worry, we'll offer more swim lessons in the new year. LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION

WIBIT NIGHT

Our establishment collaborates with the American Red Cross to provide comprehensive lifeguard training. Our course equips participants with the necessary knowledge and abilities to prevent, identify, and respond to aquatic emergencies and provide care. It covers water rescue techniques, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and first aid skills.

October 20th: 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. no lap lanes beginning at 6:00 p.m.

HIRING NEEDS Are you passionate about saving lives and teaching others how to swim? Our team is seeking more individuals like you to join us as lifeguards or swim instructors. Let's get ready to splash around and have a blast with our Wibit Aqua Track! This epic obstacle course is perfect for running, climbing, jumping, and sliding. Each challenge requires different skills, so put your game face on and prepare for some serious fun. Everyone is welcome to join in on the excitement! Just remember to stay safe and a responsible adult must be within arm’s reach for children unable to pass the green band swimming test. (Available for pool rentals.)

Childcare & Camps

The West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department strives to keep all our youth safe with educational and engaging activities.

CLUBHOUSE Our Clubhouse is a dedicated childcare space for our members to use while at the Wellness Center.

Children ages 6 weeks to 11 years old can spend up to two hours a day playing while their parents exercise. To use the Clubhouse, registration in MotionVibe is mandatory. Each child must either be a Wellness Center member or pay a fee of $5 per visit if there is space available.

Columbian Park Zoo visits the Aftercare program on October 5 with several animal ambassadors.

AFTERCARE This fall, we launched an aftercare program for the West Lafayette School Corporation, and we're thrilled to have more than 40 students enrolled. We receive daily inquiries about expanding the program, but we can only do so once we have additional staff.

PARENTS NIGHT OUT Parents Night Out (PNO) offers an excellent chance for children to spend more time with their friends socially while their parents take care of errands, have a date, or enjoy a peaceful evening.

The activities available for children include games, gym time, movies, and more. Some of the PNOs also include swimming. $20 per child, $5 sibling discount 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

WINTER BREAK CAMP Come and have a blast with us this winter break!

We have exciting arts and crafts, refreshing swimming sessions, and engaging indoor/outdoor activities lined up for students. Our camp is scheduled for December 26-29 and January 2-5.

Take advantage of the fun!

Camp is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with before and aftercare services available. Campers must pack a lunch, but a daily snack is provided.

HARVEST HUSTLE 5K

SUNDAY WITH SANTA

Due to inclement weather, the annual Harvest Hustle 5k has been cancelled. All registrants will be automatically registered for next year's race on Friday, October 11, 2024, from 6-8 p.m.

Come and celebrate the joyous season with Santa! Join us for an afternoon filled with delightful activities such as crafting, writing or drawing a wishlist, taking photos with Santa himself, and indulging in delicious refreshments.

Remember that registering for this event is a must, and you can easily do so through CivicRec.

FALL FESTIVAL Join us for some spooky fun at the West Lafayette Wellness Center's 3rd annual Fall Festival. More than 40 local businesses and organizations will be lined up along our trails, ready to hand out treats. There will also be fire pits for roasting marshmallows, food trucks, games, and many other exciting activities, including a movie. Don't miss out! Registration is required in your CivicRec account so we have enough supplies. Everyone is welcome and you DO NOT need to be a Wellness Center member to participate.

Facilities & Rentals

If you're looking to host a successful event, the West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department is here to help! We offer the rental of our facilities and shelters for your special occasions such as graduations, small weddings, or pool parties. Unless otherwise stated, our parks are typically available from 8 a.m. until half an hour after sunset. Please note that prior communication with our department is required for all homeschool groups, educational co-ops, and school-based programs. This is to avoid conflicts with already scheduled programming and ensure that all parkgoers have a positive experience.

CUMBERLAND PARK The Cumberland Park shelter is near the community basketball courts and the Arni Cohen Memorial Fields.

Cumberland Park is also home to the West Lafayette Farmers Market from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays from May-October. The softball fields are used for summer and fall leagues but can be rented for events offseason.

COMMUNITY BAY If you're looking for a safe place to store your canoe, kayak or rowing shell, our storage facility is located right next to the Wabash River. As part of the Purdue Crew Boathouse, it's situated just south of the river access facilities along the Wabash Heritage Trail. This seasonal rink, open from the day after Thanksgiving until mid-March (weather permitting), offers private rental options for those looking to enjoy the ice with friends and family. Weekday rentals are $225 (plus tax) for a two-hour session, while weekend rentals are $250 (plus tax) for the same timeframe (please note that skate rental is not included in this price).

Memberships

At the West Lafayette Wellness Center, we are more than just a gym! Whether you're looking for group exercise classes, basketball courts, an indoor track, lap swimming, youth programs, sports, or fitness equipment, we have something for everyone.

Our 8,000-square-foot wellness floor includes state-of-the-art LifeFitness equipment. The Wellness Center includes three group exercise studios and an indoor track. Each group exercise room is equipped with Fitness On Demand - a virtual fitness video library. Members can use any empty group exercise room to take part in their very own class or try our group exercise classes.

We offer more than 50 weekly classes, personal training, adult and youth sports, childcare while you work out, and both group and private swim lessons.

All members and guests need to be 14 years of age or older to come to the facility without an adult. Any guests ages 14-17 need to have a parent sign a waiver each calendar year. All children ages 6 weeks to age 13 need an adult age 18 or older to be with them at the facility at all times.

We ask that all members and guests review our Code of Conduct before using the facility to ensure a more enjoyable experience.

JOINER'S FEE The $50 joiner's fee will be waived for all City of West Lafayette residents and active military. A City of West Lafayette resident is defined as one who lives in a household paying property taxes to the City of West Lafayette. Families will only be charged one joining fee.

Sports & Recreation

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE Our basketball program is specifically designed for children between the ages of 5 and 11. Our goal is to provide a fun and safe environment for kids to develop their fundamental basketball skills, such as scoring, passing, and form. We believe teamwork is essential to the game and emphasize its importance throughout the program. Each participant will receive a jersey, and we offer one practice and game per week to ensure that kids have ample opportunities to improve their skills. All fall sessions are full, but save the date to sign up for the winter league: Registration is open from October 27 to December 30 at 6 p.m. with the first practices the week of January 8.

YOUTH BASKETBALL CLINIC Our basketball clinic is designed to help children aged 3 to 5 develop their skills and learn the game. The clinic will include a 30-minute skills practice followed by a 20minute game. The sessions are all full for October, and there will be a new clinic in January, Registration is open from October 27 to December 30 at 6 p.m. with the first practice on January 20.

VOLLEYBALL CLINIC We will release more information about the winter volleyball clinic in the upcoming autumn. Check our Facebook page for updates.

POSTPARTUM STRENGTH & MOBILITY Join Lauren Mullikin, a certified Pregnancy and Postpartum coach, for this fun 8-week program to help you focus on core and pelvic floor exercises that can improve your strength and balance. The Postpartum Strength & Mobility workshops provide valuable insights into your postpartum body and boost your confidence. With Lauren's guidance, you can feel better and have more energy while connecting with other new moms and building a supportive community.

RIVERSIDE SKATING CENTER Our seasonal, outdoor ice-skating rink is located in Tapawingo Park and offers open skating from late November through early March, weather permitting. A food/drink vending area, coin-operated rental lockers, and public restrooms exist. The rink is a 70x120-foot oval.

We’d like to thank Purdue Federal Credit Union for their continued support of Riverside Skating Center.

PRIVATE LESSONS Request private or semi-private skate lessons starting November 20. Lessons are available for all ages and abilities, from beginners just learning to skate to more advanced skaters looking to learn jumps and spins. Register using your CivicRec account.

FOUNDATION AND FUNDRAISING Preserving and enhancing the parks, facilities, trails, greenways, and recreational programs that enhance our community's standard of living is the main goal of the West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Foundation. As the community expands, the Foundation is dedicated to protecting these valuable resources, developing new park spaces, and safeguarding future greenspaces.

Due to inclement weather, the Harvest Hustle 5K was cancelled this year. All registrants for this year’s event will be honored and registered for next year’s race on Friday, October 11, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tshirts are available for pick up at the Wellness Center.

We also have goodie bags for all Kids' Fun Run registrants! Please bring a copy of your registration.

WEST LAFAYETTE TREE FRIENDS The West Lafayette Tree Friends is a volunteer organization dedicated to protecting our City's trees and greenspaces. They plant shade trees along public streets of the City, organize seasonal street tree pruning to ensure tree branches grow above roadways and sidewalks and complete one or two large planting projects under their Operation Re-leaf tree planting program each year.

Founded in 1981, West Lafayette Tree Friends was established by adopting the original West Lafayette Trees and Landscape Ordinance. They work in cooperation with the City and property owners to enhance the beauty of the streets in West Lafayette by pruning and planting trees.

Private donations and grants finance all West Lafayette Tree Friends' initiatives.

The West Lafayette Tree Friends meet on the second Tuesday of every month for Tree Friends business.

These monthly meetings are open to the public. Sub-committees for the organization meet throughout the month. Everyone is welcome to join.
