Message from the Headteacher...
Dear parents, carers and school community,
Spring feels like the perfect moment to pause and celebrate, and this edition gives us so much to be proud of. From the slopes of the Snow Centre to the corridors of Parliament to the excitement of our Lunar New Year workshops, this has been a time full of colour, courage, and community. At the heart of it all have been our young people, not as passengers, but as leaders. Growing leaders and empowering our pupils to shape their own futures is one of our sustaining ambitions. Opportunities to lead come in many forms. Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors span every year group, ensuring kindness and respect are lived experiences, not just values on a wall. Our Eco Committee are debating and taking real action on sustainability. Our Pupil Voice team travelled to Parliament, observed democracy in action, and then presented their own ideas directly to our local MP. Through our Pupil Ambassador programme, students are driving change across sport, music, charity, animal care, inclusion, environment, and wellbeing. These are not token gestures. This is genuine leadership, developed deliberately and with purpose.
This term has also brought significant recognition for the school. Our re-accreditation for the NAS Autism Specialist Award at Advanced Level and the renewal of our Rainbow Flag Award reflect the inclusive, ambitious community we are building together. We are also proud to have achieved the Leading Parent Partnership Award, a national accreditation that recognises schools who place family engagement at the very centre of what they do. This one feels particularly meaningful, because it belongs to all of us. Strong partnerships with parents and carers are the foundation on which everything else is built, and this award is a recognition of the trust, openness, and commitment you bring every single day. Thank you.
As the days grow longer, I hope this newsletter captures the warmth, ambition, and joy that defines life at WKS. Thank you, as always, for your partnership and your trust.
Warm regards,
Mr Richard Hicks Headteacher

Rainbow Pride recognition: West Kirby School & College receives the Rainbow Flag Award
West Kirby School & College is proud to have achieved Renewal Status for the Rainbow Flag Award for a further two years, recognising our ongoing commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality.
The Rainbow Flag Award is a national quality assurance framework that promotes positive LGBTQ+ inclusion and visibility across schools and colleges. It supports a whole-school approach to challenging homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying, ensuring all young people feel safe, respected and valued.
The assessment praised our inclusive practices, highlighting the welcoming atmosphere in areas like the animal care space and café, where pupils show care and respect daily.
Our Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador, George, said: "Being the Diversity Ambassador means accepting
all people for who they are, no matter their gender, race, or beliefs".
Ms Killey, LGBTQ+ Lead at WKS, added: "The Rainbow Flag Award reflects our values. This renewal recognises the hard work of our staff and students in creating a safe, welcoming environment for all".

We are proud to share our Rainbow Flag Award certificate with the school community.
LGBTQ+ History Month 2026: Science & innovation
This LGBTQ+ History Month, West Kirby School & College is celebrating the contributions LGBTQ+ people have made to science and innovation. Pupils are learning how diversity in thinking leads to creativity, discovery and progress, and how being able to be yourself helps change the world.
By recognising these pioneers, we remind pupils that science is for everyone and that innovation grows when all voices are valued. For useful resources scan the QR code.

Alan Turing laid the foundations of modern computing. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, championed inclusion in science. Lynn Conway transformed modern microchip design. Ben Barres advanced our understanding of the brain and equality in research.
Celebrating strong parent partnerships – LPPA Award Success
West Kirby School & College is proud to share the strengths highlighted in our recent Leading Parent Partnership Award (LPPA) report. The assessment recognised the school’s strong commitment to working closely with parents and carers, from the Charity and Governors through to senior leaders and staff.
The report praised our clear communication, welcoming approach and bespoke induction process, ensuring
families feel informed and supported from first enquiry onwards. Parent feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 90% of parents saying they have “got their child back”, and that stress for both pupils and families has reduced.
Our parent coffee mornings, workshops, café sessions and high-quality newsletters were also recognised, reflecting our shared commitment to making families feel valued, confident and fully involved in their child’s journey at WKS.
Meet Mr Macdonald
Strong partnerships with parents and carers are key to helping pupils thrive, and Mr Macdonald, our new Parental Engagement Facilitator, plays a vital role in strengthening those links.
Mr Macdonald, part of the education team & ICT Teacher, will work closely with families to ensure they feel listened to, supported and confident that school is here to help. He checks in with parents once pupils have settled, attends workshops and coffee mornings, and provides additional signposting support where needed, working alongside staff, in addition to existing home-school links.
Mr Macdonald explains: “When a child knows that school and home work together, they feel secure and supported. That stability helps them build confidence, trust staff, and reach their potential”.
Through his role, Mr Macdonald aims to ensure parents feel empowered, informed and reassured, making a real difference for pupils and families across our school community.
School charities update...
Giving back: Our school commitment
At West Kirby School & College, we believe education goes beyond the classroom. It is also about helping young people understand their role in building a kinder, fairer world. This term, our Charity Team has been busy planning a new year of fundraising and awareness events that place social responsibility as part of our Personal Development Programme.
Mrs Dooley, our Charity Lead said: “pupils played a leading role in choosing which causes we will support. Following a suggestion from our Pupil Voice team, charities were grouped into three themes: people, animals and the environment, encouraging students to think about the different ways we can give back to our communities and our planet. After a whole school vote, we are proud to announce our 2026 partner charities”.
Clatterbridge Cancer Charity supports people across Merseyside and beyond with specialist cancer treatment, research, and compassionate care close to home.
Wirral Fox Rescue rescues, rehabilitates and releases injured or orphaned foxes, giving local wildlife a second chance.
WaterAid works globally to provide clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene to communities, helping people live healthier and safer lives.
Each charity represents a cause close to our pupils’ hearts, from supporting vital healthcare, to protecting wildlife, to providing clean water for communities worldwide.
Representatives from the charities will soon visit school to share their work and inspire pupils to see the real impact of collective action. Fundraising plans are already underway, including our much-loved annual sponsored walk, which raised £500 last year.
Through these projects, pupils learn that when everyone contributes, even in small ways, we can create meaningful change. It’s a powerful reminder that kindness, proactiveness and enterprising spirit help to build a better future for all. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Embracing inclusive education
Dear readers,
I wanted to explain a little more about what our Charity, West Kirby Educational Trust (WKET), does to support parents & carers, other schools and the community. We are growing these aspects of our organisation and are keen to fully develop our offering over the next few years.
You may have recently heard in the news that the government is moving to build more inclusive practices in mainstream schools. We think that by helping staff who work with children who display aspects of neurodiversity we can help many more children in mainstream to have an improved learning experience! I am proud to say we acted ahead of the game.
Last year Mrs Sarah Wilkinson, one of the Deputy Head Teachers at WKS, took on the role of Head of Inclusion and the Clinical team at WKET. As an organisation, our aim is to increase our training and support offering across the community. This means we can reach out to parents and carers, to social services, scouts and other
charitable groups in helping them access effective SEND & Inclusion training.
However, it also means we can support schools across the North West by offering enhanced training and inclusion support for staff in mainstream. Mrs Wilkinson set up a branch of our Charity (WKET) called 'Embrace'. Through Embrace we are offering to work with local schools to help them to improve their knowledge of SEND and inclusion. We aim to achieve this through:
• In partnership with schools, offering Inclusion Reviews, Consultancy Services and resources to support effective inclusion best practice implementation & ongoing development
• Signposting to free relevant training & resources
• Partnership working with SEN teams in local schools
• The opportunity to join our Inclusion Hub
• Parent & carer neurodiversity workshops

AQA Unlocking Potential
We’re a third of the way through our sports programme, designed to build skills, confidence, and future aspirations. Our athlete mentor, Neil Danns Snr, ex-British and European skateboard champion, continues to support our pupils. Students have tried new sports like skateboarding and inline skating and are working on a Social Action Project to improve the local environment.
Table cricket tournament
Our table cricket team, featuring four new debutants alongside three experienced players, competed in the annual Wirral tournament at Wirral Grammar School for Boys. The team secured impressive wins against Clare Mount Specialist Sports College and Chester Catholic High School, progressing to the final against the national champions. Although they narrowly lost in the final, their outstanding teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship shone throughout the day, earning them qualification for the Padgate Academy County Finals to represent Wirral. The pupils were a credit to the school, thoughtfully strategising each game to strengthen their performance. They achieved their highest batting total of the tournament, but strong batting from their opponents ultimately secured the win. A special mention goes to top performers Dan, Harry, Percy, Pip and Ryan for their excellent contributions on the pitch.
KS3 football tournament
Our KS3 footballers braved the cold at Woodchurch High School and gave everything on the pitch. The team’s efforts was rewarded with some fantastic wins, including a 3-0 victory over Co-op Academy Bebington. Pupils showed determination, skill, and excellent teamwork across all matches. Well done to Charlie, Frankie, Jack, Jacob, Layla, Michael, Riley, Seb and Sophie for their brilliant performances.
Music Discovery Day hits the right note
This term, West Kirby School & College celebrated a music themed Discovery Day, a fantastic opportunity for pupils to explore the world of music across the curriculum.
Throughout the day, lessons took on a musical twist, especially in STEAM subjects, allowing students to connect creativity, science, and problemsolving in a fun and engaging way. During the final lesson, pupils joined a live online session via YouTube, complete with interactive Q&A and quizzes on Slido, making the experience both educational and entertaining.
A curated Spotify playlist added extra atmosphere to the day, while pupils and staff captured their favourite moments in photos and videos, which were shared in a central gallery for everyone to enjoy.
Music update...
The day was a hit, combining learning with creativity, collaboration, and lots of musical inspiration.
Ms McAdam, our Science Teacher who helped organise the event, said: "It’s wonderful to see pupils engaging with music and science in new and exciting ways, and I’m so proud of all the staff and students who made today such a success".
From classroom challenges to live online activities and interactive playlists, Music Discovery Day reminded everyone that learning can be rhythmic, imaginative, and a whole lot of fun.
Our Music department continues to thrive, with exciting achievements and memorable events:
Music staff travelled to London to represent WKS at the International Music Education Expo, collaborating with global professionals. Mrs Dooley, our music teacher, contributed to the planning of the event, and our team will now support other schools in developing SEND music provision.
Pupils also visited London to watch the new arena production of The Hunger Games, exploring careers in the music and performance industry. Huge congratulations to Jasmine, who achieved West Kirby’s first Gold Medal Drum Award and is now progressing to Grade One.
A fantastic term celebrating talent, opportunity and creativity in music!
Pupil Empowerment...
Thank you!
At West Kirby School & College, our Pupil Empowerment programme gives students opportunities to develop leadership skills, share their ideas, and make a positive difference in school life.
Through Pupil Voice, the Pupil Ambassador teams, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, and Eco School representatives, pupils are encouraged to express their views, take part in decision-making, and lead initiatives that benefit the whole school community. This includes promoting kindness and respect, supporting peers, and contributing to projects that help make our school more sustainable and environmentally aware.
Our ambassadors...
This year, we are proud to introduce our Pupil Ambassadors, who represent a wide range of areas across the school:
Inclusion & Diversity: George, Year 11
“I want to make sure that nobody is discriminated against in any way. I’m currently meeting with Miss Killey to discuss this. Positive changes will be coming in the weeks ahead”.
Wellbeing: Jasmine, Year 7
“I like that we can make suggestions on what wellbeing activities we want to do. I am thinking maybe a good idea is to create a sewing club”.
Sport: Layla, Year 7
“I love football and I would like to create a girls football team in school”.
Music: Sophie, Year 9
“I like music and that’s why I wanted to be the Music Ambassador. I will work with Mrs Dooley in events like the Music Live Lounge and other music trips”.
Charity: Evie, Year 9
“Other charities have helped our school in the past. It’s time we give back to others as well”.
Animal Care: Thomas, Year 11
“Animals are a big part of our school community. I am working on expanding Animal Care and bringing more animals. I like that in school for example, we use the eggs of the chickens in the bakery so it’s part of a wider project”.
Environment: Theo, Year 7
“My job is to come up with ideas to make the school more eco-friendly. Maybe like, sell all the non-electric vehicles to get some electronic ones”.
Eco Committee
This term has been a busy one for our Eco School. The Eco Committee met in our outdoor classroom to debate new ideas and explore ways to make our school even more environmentally friendly. The session was a great success, with enthusiastic participation from all members, led by Ms Millington.
Committee members have also been actively bird watching, helping to monitor wildlife around our grounds. With Spring approaching, exciting new activities are planned for our green spaces, including horticulture projects that will continue to grow our pupils’ connection with nature and sustainability.
Pupil Voice
Pupil Voice ensures students are actively involved in shaping school life. From reviewing policies to suggesting new activities; pupils develop leadership, confidence, teamwork, and communication skills in a supportive environment.
Noah, Year 11, shared: "I've been part of Pupil Voice since Year 8 because I like to know what people want and bring things up in school that can improve or change. For example, letting trusted Year 11 students go out for lunch and start to work on our independence in year 11. It’s just an idea".
Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
This year our ambassadors are across school ensuring the Power for Good is everywhere. They are:
Albie (Primary), Jack (Year 9), Matthew (Year 9), Grace (Year 9), George (Year 11), Tom (Year 12), Finn (Year 13).
Albie expressed: “You have to stop bullying if you see it. In Pathfinders for example, they can come to me or a teacher. I would say you should most likely tell a teacher”.
“I would like to make sure no one feels worried about bullying in Post 16. If someone is in a rough place, they can come speak to someone or myself and talk about their problems and I will be there to listen and give my opinion”, said Thomas.
Through initiatives like these, our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors are given a platform to share solutions, spark conversations, and address conflicts constructively, ensuring that West Kirby School & College is a place where respect, kindness, and understanding are our main goal.
Awards evening...
Celebrating our pupils’ achievements
Our recent Celebration Evening was a truly special occasion, dedicated to recognising the hard work, commitment, and achievements of our pupils as they received their examination certificates. The evening was filled with pride, smiles, and a real sense of accomplishment as we celebrated everything our students have worked so hard for.
A huge thank you to all the staff who joined us, their support made the event even more memorable and showcased the strong sense of teamwork at West Kirby School & College. With light indie music, soft lighting, candles, and cake, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, creating the perfect celebratory setting to honour our pupils.
We are incredibly proud of every student and wish them continued success and happiness as they move on to the next stage of their journey, whether that’s further study, apprenticeships, or new opportunities.
A special mention goes to Mrs Stephens, Exams Officer and Site & Catering teams, for going above and beyond to ensure the evening ran smoothly and everyone enjoyed the celebrations. It was a night to remember, highlighting not just achievements, but the dedication, resilience, and community spirit that make WKS so special.
If our alumni would like to continue receiving our newsletter, stay connected with our community, and take part in special alumni events and talks, please email marketing@wkrs.co.uk to let us know.
Supporting our pupils to find their perfect pathway Career Pathways update...
Here at WKS, preparing pupils for life beyond the classroom is about more than ticking boxes, it’s about opening doors, sparking curiosity, and showing our pupils what’s possible.
This term has been full of activity; we’ve hosted careers events and supported college visits, giving our young people first-hand experiences that build confidence, raise aspirations, and make the future feel a little less daunting (and a lot more exciting!).
Careers in action: opening doors for the future
This term, we have strengthened our employer links and now host monthly employer talks for pupils from Year 9 to Post-16. Hearing directly from professionals helps students understand real career pathways, entry routes, and the skills employers value.
So far this term, we have welcomed speakers from MP Matthew Patrick’s office, Gladstone’s Library, Jacksons Wildlife Rescue, The Cat Café in Hoylake, Claire House, and Copeland Security Services, giving pupils a wonderful mix of charity, healthcare, animal care, and security sector experiences. These talks give pupils insight into a wide range of industries.
Future fairs: explore, ask, imagine This term, we proudly hosted our ‘Meet the College, Trainer and Employer’ event in school, for students from Year 6 through to Year 14.
College Visits
Year 11 and 2026 leavers have visited several colleges, including LIPA, Wirral Metropolitan College City of Liverpool College, Coleg Cambria, and Myerscough, gaining a real feel for life after school. Our Year 11s have also been out and about, attending the Wirral Careers Fair at The Hive in Birkenhead and visiting The National Apprenticeship Show at Aintree Racecourse.
“All of these opportunities, from employer talks to careers fairs and college visits, provide our pupils with access to a careers programme that’s practical, inspiring, and yes, occasionally comes with sweet treat bribes. They help our pupils see what’s out there, understand the steps to get there, and pick up the skills that will set them up for success. We couldn’t be prouder of how our young people are embracing these experiences, and we can’t wait to keep opening doors, sparking ideas, and helping every pupil carve out a bright, confident future”.
Mrs Shallcross, Career Pathways Officer.
Cultural involvement...
Celebrating Lunar New Year at West Kirby School & College
As part of our Awareness Days, West Kirby School & College proudly celebrated Chinese New Year on Thursday 12 February 2026 with a vibrant, whole-school programme of cultural workshops.
Following the successful format of previous Lunar New Year celebrations, pupils rotated through a series of engaging, hands-on workshops, experiencing different aspects of Chinese culture throughout the day.
The workshops included:
Lion Dance - delivered by China Spirit UK, where pupils learnt about the cultural significance of the lion dance and tried basic performance techniques.
Chinese Dance - exploring traditional movement, rhythm and storytelling.
Dumpling Making - where pupils learnt about Lunar New Year food traditions and take part in practical cooking activities.
Chinese Music, led by a University of Liverpool music student, giving pupils the chance to learn and sing a Chinese New Year celebration song.
Lunar New Year is one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture, marking a time of reflection, renewal and community.
For our pupils, the day offered a meaningful opportunity to explore another culture through music, movement, food and performance, whilst developing skills such as teamwork, coordination, creativity and confidence. The celebration also supports our commitment to cultural awareness, curiosity and respect for global traditions.

Duke of Edinburgh...
Adventure, resilience and teamwork: DofE in action
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is offered to our Year 10, Year 11 and Post 16 pupils and is delivered by our experienced and dedicated in-house staff team.
Bronze
Our Bronze group has been working hard over the past few months, focusing particularly on navigation skills. Pupils have completed community walks using maps, route cards and compasses, while also learning about the Countryside Code and expedition safety. They recently prepared a meal using Trangia stoves, an important expedition skill.
Pupils continued to progress through their individual sections outside of sessions, logging evidence on eDofE. Jake continues football, Sophia plays basketball, and Isabel badminton for their physical sections. Oliver is playing golf, maintaining his remote-controlled boat as his skill, and has already completed his volunteering. Upcoming fullday practice walks will give pupils experience carrying full expedition equipment ahead of their summer term practice expedition.
Silver
The Silver team continues to make strong progress. Congratulations to Michael, who has completed Bronze and is well underway with Silver, and to Luke, who has completed his physical section. This term pupils have focused on route planning and DDTT (distance, direction, time, terrain), developing a deeper understanding of expedition preparation.
Training
Our leader team continues professional development to maintain the highest standards of safety and delivery. Mrs Draycott and Mr Scullion have completed a three-day advanced outdoor first aid course, and Mrs Draycott will attend an upcoming DofE Leaders Conference.
2026 marks 70 years of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and we are proud to be part of its leg
Christmas wrap up...
Charity Elf Run & Walk
Our annual Elf Run & Walk brought pupils from every year group together for a morning full of fun, energy, and festive cheer. Although the weather meant we moved indoors to the Sports Hall, pupils embraced the change with enthusiasm: walking, running, and wearing elf hats and Christmas jumpers. The morning included a lively Mr Hicks Christmas Quiz, spreading laughter and joy. We raised £200 to support local charity Wirral University Teaching Hospital (Arrowe Park & Clatterbridge Hospitals). A huge thank you to everyone who contributed.
Christmas dinner celebration
After the Elf Run, pupils gathered for a magical whole-school Christmas dinner, with the hall beautifully decorated, festive music playing, and tables laid with crackers and treats. The Music Department set the scene with live performances while Santa, his reindeer, and helpers made a very special appearance, delighting pupils and staff alike. The day was a wonderful celebration of community, kindness, and festive spirit across the school.
WKS Live lounge
The Music Lounge came alive with festive performances from pupils across the school. From solos and duets to full band numbers, pupils showcased confidence, talent, and creativity, performing classics, upbeat favourites, and original compositions. Using microphones, keyboards, drums, and amps, students embraced the professional setup and fully engaged the audience. A huge congratulations to all performers, your courage and creativity made the afternoon unforgettable.
Enterprise market
Our Christmas Enterprise Market was a huge success. Pupils designed, created, and sold a wide range of products, from handmade soaps and festive crafts to tasty treats and personalised gifts. The event showcased creativity, teamwork, and entrepreneurial skills, and it was wonderful to see so many parents, carers, families, ex-pupils and community members supporting the school. Well done to all our young entrepreneurs.
Primary nativity
Our Primary pupils brought the Christmas story to life with a joyful and heartwarming Nativity performance. From confident speaking roles to beautiful singing and thoughtful acting, every child played their part with enthusiasm and pride. The performance was full of festive cheer and truly captured the spirit of Christmas, delighting staff and families alike. Well done to our wonderful Primary pupils and the team who supported them in making this such a special celebration.
A word from Santa...
“Ho, ho, ho! What a wonderful Christmas at West Kirby School & College! I’ve seen fantastic teamwork, festive spirit, and so many smiles this year. Keep being kind, respectful, and proactive, you’ve all made my trip very merry indeed!”.
Preparation for Adulthood...
More than a bakery: Preparing for Adulthood at WKS
At West Kirby School & College, The School Bakery is much more than just a place to buy fresh bread and treats. It is a living, learning environment at the heart of our Preparation for Adulthood programme.
For our Post 16 pupils, the Bakery provides real-world work experience. Pupils develop essential employability skills such as hosting and serving customers, managing the till, shopping for supplies, stock control and inventory, teamwork, communication, and professionalism. These experiences build confidence, independence, and readiness for the world of work.
On Fridays, the Bakery is closed to the public and opens exclusively for our school community. Pupils book into the café and are served by Year 11 students, creating a natural progression route. Younger pupils often say they “can’t wait to get to Year 11 to work in the Bakery”, while Year 11 pupils prepare to serve members of the public with confidence and pride. This natural and safe journey reflects our values: be enterprising and be aspirational.
The Bakery also keeps our alumni community connected. Former pupils are always welcome to visit, catch up with staff, enjoy the space, and read our latest newsletters. It remains a safe, welcoming place where relationships continue beyond school.
Our Bakery truly embodies what WKS stands for: learning through doing, building independence, and inspiring young people to be the best version of themselves.
This term, pupils at West Kirby School & College have enjoyed a wide range of exciting educational visits, giving them the opportunity to learn, explore and grow beyond the classroom.
Our Year 8 residential trip to Tattenhall was a real highlight. Pupils demonstrated fantastic independence, teamwork, and resilience as they participated in outdoor activities, overcame personal challenges, and enjoyed their time away from home. It was wonderful to witness so many “firsts” and to see confidence grow over the course of the trip. Pupils shared their experiences:
Poppy said, “It was very good, I slept well, and I would like more residentials.”
Max commented, “I really enjoyed having s’mores.”
William added, “Great food!”
Our Primary pupils had an exciting day at The Snow Centre, trying out skiing, snowboarding, and winter activities for the first time. Even Mr Hicks joined in, showing off his skills on the slopes and encouraging the children every step of the way. Pupils tackled new challenges with confidence and enthusiasm, building teamwork, resilience, and lots of happy memories. A truly magical day full of laughter, learning, and snow-filled fun.
Our Pupil Voice team also travelled to the Houses of Parliament, where they explored the heart of British democracy. They observed live debates in both the House of Commons and House of Lords and took part in a workshop on petitions, finishing the day by presenting their own ideas to the MP for Wirral West.
Our school is proud to be an active part of the local community through our Reading in the Community scheme, which we have been running for the past year. Each week, our pupils visit the Old Garden in Hoylake to read aloud to the residents, alternating between primary pupils in the autumn and summer terms and secondary pupils in the spring term.
