Dingle Hillwalking Club Taster Walk for Prospective New MembersSun 27th Sept

The Carol Cronin Gallery

The walking year for Dingle Hillwalking Club begins again in Oct. We will shortly compile a schedule of walks for the coming year combining a mix of difficult, moderate and easy walks. Our walks are scheduled for alternate Sunday, mostly in the Chorca Dhuibhne area. During the year we will also make a few trips to Killarney to explore the McGillycuddy Reeks and we also plan to visit locations outside the county and possibly beyond. Garvey’s Supervalu in Dingle is the assembly point for the walks which are usually held on Sunday starting at 10.00am A membership fee is payable to cover registration and insurance with Mountaineering Ireland. Anyone interested in joining the club can obtain an application form and walk schedule from any of the club officers (see below) and can also be viewed or downloaded from the club’s website. .

This is an opportunity for anyone who is interested in exploring the outdoors or to view the sea and mountain landscape in remote locations on a regular basis with like minded people. As a hillwalking club our walks are normally on the hills over rough terrain requiring a reasonable level of fitness and appropriate footwear and clothing. Persons who are interested in joining the club but are unsure of their ability to participate may wish to talk to us about the club’s activities. Prospective members will also have an opportunity to take part in three of our walks before they make a decision to join the club. The proposed route is 2½ hour walk in Loch an Dúin, which located on the northern side of the peninsula near Cloghane. The meeting point is Garvey’s Supervalue at 10am or the Kilmore Cross at 10.30am . Participants will get an opportunity to interact with club members on this walk. While waterproof clothing may be required (subject to weather conditions) hill walking boots are not essential on this particular route.

WE KNOW WAKING UP CAN BE HARD LET US MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU OPEN FROM 8:30 MON-SAT SUNDAY FROM 10:00

60 Seconds with

Don O’ Sullivan

This weeks session from the Dingle Record Shop comes from the Kildare singer/songwriter Sive. Drawing from rock, jazz and folk influences, Sive has created a sound all of her own which sweeps along displaying folk and jazz nuances with the confidence of one who knows. She dropped in for a chat and some tunes with Mazz on Green Street.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 22nd September the featured film at the Dingle Film Club will be the John Boorman directed “Queen and Country”. The director revisits former glories in this follow up to his 1987 tour de force “Hope and Glory”, in that movie 9-year-old Bill Rohan rejoiced in the destruction of his school by an errant Luftwaffe bomb, now the story is picked up nearly a decade later with Bill training in the early ‘50’s for action in the Korean War. He is joined by a trouble-making army mate, Percy. They never get near Korea, but engage in a constant battle of wits with the Catch-22-worthy, Sgt. Major Bradley. Richard E. Grant is their superior, the very, very, infinitely put-upon, aptly-named Major Cross. The following Tuesday on September 29th the feature will be “Mistress America”. In this riotous comedy a lonely college student in New York, is having neither the exciting university experience nor the glamorous metropolitan lifestyle she had envisioned. But when she is taken in by her soonto-be stepsister, Brooke - a resident of Times Square and adventurous gal about town - she is rescued from her disappointment and seduced by Brooke’s alluringly mad schemes. f

Why Am I So Afraid? Nuala Moore In 2012 I traveled to Siberia to take part in the Russian Cup to swim in ice water at 0°C. The biggest distance was 1000m so obviously I was going to swim the max. “1000m is nothing, 40 lengths of a pool, I only have to stay alive” was my mantra. Such a brave statement and sort of cocky. When we arrived pool side the air was - 33°C and the men were starting up the chainsaw to cut the pool open from the ice. The sound alone brought the reality home. The medical check was pending while the rev of the chainsaw elevated the blood pressure. Taking off my gloves in the cold was so intense that I stated to panic about swimming. We talked the talk but I was afraid, I panicked. So why do we use the statement “I’m so afraid!” so often as a reason not to take part. What are we afraid of? Is it fear of judgement? Fear of failure? It is easier to stick with the familiar than to than to expose yourself to your own standards. We are very driven by other’s expectations. If we think we are good at something, to be brought back to basic humility is tough. To actually feel that you can’t -is what it is that makes us stop and give up. I often think we imagine ourselves greater in our own comfort zones -we have a clear vision forward but when asked to compete in a new environment we can’t compartmentalise failure. That moment of breaking is not pretty and it’s not progress-but it could be as beneficial as it could be risky. To break and rebuild can be a fabulous experience. I wanted to swim the 1000m so blasé, I could get out at 500m, and still get graded as 500m swim, then I decided I could get out at 300m. As the fear mounted and we prepared for swim we discussed that everyone at home would be so proud no matter what. Easing myself into the Ice the pain was so intense. The first 25m was so difficult I just couldn’t figure out how to stay alive. I just could not sort out my breathing, I couldn’t compartmentalise the pain, I could not even acknowledge what I was experiencing, my body was being hit with so much physical change that I panicked and got out at 150m. I was terrified I was going to die. It was fear, fear of not knowing what was happening. Fear of not trusting myself and mostly fear of the next step into the unknown beyond the comfort zone of letting myself go. When really all I had to do was swim. The moment you make that call to get out of that situation is very real indeed. The body responds in a way that overwhelms you. I’ve been there and I’ve got out but how did others stay in the Ice? Why do some walk away from their fears when others walk into them? We are all equipped to deal with fear so why do some hide behind their emotions? Fear is your best friend. True fear is the moment that every sense in our body is heightened to survival and survival is the side of life that so many people are failing to engage with in their adventures. Fear enables us to look at every facet of the picture. The moment you are afraid-this is the moment you should wait for, this is the moment that you become greater than your emotions-this is the moment that you become your now hero. I came home to Ireland, so proud of my 150m but I was determined to understand how one person could be different to another when we have the same skills. We all present to swim and we all appear strong. The difference is trust. I sat myself down and I broke down the challenges. I wrote down all the fears and I figured if it won’t kill me it will make me stronger. I went back and completed 1000m at 0°C twice now, methodically and without fear. I trusted myself. The last few years of my sporting life have thought me so much about myself, about my journey, about what life had thought me and mostly about who I am. Fear plays a huge part in all our journeys, not necessarily fear of the challenge but fear as a pure emotion. When you genuinely can compete without fear of failure than you can commit 100%. Fear of failure is nothing compared to that moment when you trust yourself. There is no such thing as failing.. it’s always learning, and that moment when you break is the moment you get to rebuild and the world is new again. Take that step. You could fall, you may cry, you may be much less that you thought you were but all that is nothing to the excitement that you trusted yourself.

The Goat will host a culture night event on Friday night 18th September. Bookings advised. Two sittings: 6 to 8 and 8.30 to late. Tel 066 9152391.

FARMING IN LANZAROTE Its possibly one of the most frequented holiday resorts, especially by people from the Dingle Peninsula, but we know relatively little about what goes on, on Lanzarote. That is, apart from the standard tour stuff, the odd glass of sangria and your tapas lunch. But this is an island though struggling with the elements is a productive farming community also. That any agriculture exists on the island at all is an enormous tribute to the inventiveness and gutsy determination of the islanders themselves, and even exceeds the perseverance of the people of Aran and the West Coast, in the 18th 19th and 20th Century. With rain so rare and underground water facilities extremely limited, it really does seem miraculous how any agriculture can exist at all on Lanzarote. Tap water supplies are from desalinated seawater, so fresh water is at a premium. A drive from the central town of San Bartolome to Tinajo will take you through the village of Tiagua., where you will find the Agricultural Museum of Lanzarote, which is a mine of information, useful or not. The Northern part of the island is supprisingly green, in relative terms, supporting palm trees and the only forest plantation on the island, partly due to the northerly aspect of its slopes. This supports a craft industry, where local crafts such as ratten baskets are made for both local needs and the tourist trade. As Lanzarote has no meadows, you will not find any cattle or sheep here, apart from Pets Corner in Rancho Texas but surprisingly there are goats on the island. These were formerly farmed mainly for their milk, but nowadays this milk is largely used for cheese production. Despite the volcanic soil there is abundant agricultural activity still at Lanzarote. To add to the problems of the volcanic soil are the woes of very little rain fall and a small underground wáter table. But viticulture and agriculture do exist, through the daily miracle of crops sprouting from the picon, the black volcanic grit found in abundance on the island. According to the Agricultural Training Board of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote receives less rainfall than parts of the Sahara, with a mere 14 centimetres of precipitation per year. Lanzarote’s farmers are still in the process of developing agricultural techniques. Only 15 years ago the majority of the farmers used camels to pull their ploughs. Now that figure has dropped to about five percent. It’s now, in fact, probably cheaper to buy a tractor than it is to buy a camel, most of which come from Mauritania on the west African coast. The disadvantage with a tractor however is that it tends to squash the picon and can make life even more difficult. Camels, however, are mainly reserved for the tourists now apart from a few hardy peasant farmers who refuse to give up their old traditional ways. Onions are the islands chief crop with the majority exported to mainland Spain, although Lanzarote onions also end up on the tables of English, Dutch and German homes. And anyone who has tasted Lanzarote onions will attest to their delicious sweet flavour, less harsh than their counterparts produced on the Spanish mainland. Lanzarote exports more than three times as many onions as it consumes, although classification and final packing take place on mainland Spain. Red and white potatoes, known locally as batatas or boniatos are also exported, as are a whole range of green vegetables, including the delicious spinach grown here. One of the popularly held myths is that bananas grow on Lanzarote. Potential banana pickers must, however, head for Tenerife for their sport, where there is less wind and significantly more rain. However, a project exists in the north of the island which is attempting to develop the production of pineapples, already with some success. The drink Campari, meanwhile, gets its characteristic red colour from cochineal, a dye which is extracted from a species of crushed beetle found extensively on Lanzarote. Thousands of female cochineal beetles are nurtured on the leaves of cacti in Lanzarotes northern villages of Mala and Guatiza. The cacti are expressly grown for the cultivation of the beetles. The parasitic beetle, which leads a relatively stationary existence, obtains its nutrients from sucking juices from the cactis leaves. The workers in the cactus fields of Mala and Guatiza, many of whom are women, ensure that the insects are spread out among the plants. After two to three months, the insects reach maximum size and are then ready for the harvest. The

12 West Kerry Live

harvest is carried out by carefully scraping off the beetles from the cactis leaves with a large spoon-like tool. The gatherers wear thick gloves to protect their hands from painful prickles. The beetles, which look white on the leaves, and endow whole fields with a strange whiteish veil, are dropped into special boxes which both kill them and separate the beetles from unwanted stalks and other impurities. Farmers then dry the cochineal beetles in the sun before packing them in sacks for export. Being nontoxic, cochineal, the extracted dye, which is also called carmine, is used widely in industry as a colouring for a range of products including lipstick, sweets, toothpaste, and, of course, Campari. The company that produces the bitter red drink, with the sophisticated image, is one of the biggest users of cochineal. Volcanic activity between 1726 and 1824 resulted in much of the fertile soil of the island being destroyed or covered by volcanic ash and lava. However, local peasants adapted to these extremely harsh conditions, erecting semi-circular stone walls called “zocos” around individual grape vines, which are planted deep in hollows, so as to allow roots to reach the fertile soil beneath the lava. During the night, these zocos allow the humidity through to the vegetative soil, and during the day, they prevent evaporation, by collecting any moisture, allowing it to trickle back down to the root system. Thanks to this system, the island produces melons, watermelons, potatoes, onions, garlic, and corn. However, the most interesting crop must be the grape vines, which produce the most fabulous Malvasia wine of the central region of La Geria. Try it, when you’re there. L’chaim! DEPARTMENT BUSY WITH AEOS INSPECTIONS AEOS participants are reminded that inspections are currently taking place on selected farms. Farmers should ensure that they are in compliance with the undertakings they have made under their AEOS contracts to avoid penalties and reductions in payments. The areas where most penalties occur are: Additional New Hedgerow - number of plants per meter not present; length of hedgerow in original AEOS application not delivered; hedgerow not fenced nor maintained in accordance with specifications. Species Rich Grassland - area less than claimed; less than the five positive species required; more than the 20% negative species allowed; topping not been delayed until the required date. Traditional Hay Meadow - failure to deliver area claimed in AEOS application; cut before the 1st July; not maintained as per the AEOS specification. Traditional Stone Wall Maintenance - failure to deliver the length in AEOS application; stone walls entered not been suitable for the action. Laying Of Hedgerow & Coppicing Of Hedgerows- failure to carry out the work in line with the AEOS specification; more than the allowed 20% done each year; the hedges entered for the action not suitable. AEOS participants are also be reminded that they must submit any documents, such as record sheets, requested by an Inspector within 10 working days BEEF DATA GENOMICS SCHEME This week has seen the first of the Beef Data Genomics Scheme acceptance letters being issued. In the coming weeks all farmers that are participating in the scheme will also receive their herd profile from ICBF which will give a breakdown on the maternal traits of each breeding animal. Now is the time to start preparing for the end of the scheme and where your herd needs to be, no matter where you’re starting from it is achievable to breed a 4 and 5 star herd in five years. First of all we will look at what benefit the farmer will get from taking part in the scheme. The obvious one is the payment that you will receive; giving a 30 cow herd in 2014 the farmer will receive a payment of €2500 (presuming he has enough land to make the stocking rate of 1.5 to the hectare). In a beef market that can be unstable this is an extra income every year. The best terminal calve that is born into your herd will not become the best weanling you sell without a maternal cow. In reality the most profitable herds have cows that can raise a calve to weanling stage without the need to feed meal to keep that calve gaining weight on a daily basis. If a calve is gaining weight on a milk and grass diet then he is not costing a lot to keep. Cows are expensive to keep, around €1.75 per day. A 5 star maternal cow will be highly fertile and so should have 1 calve per year. If she only has one calve per 410 days (instead of 1 per 365 days) then she will cost €76.50 in extra costs each year. More compact calving pattern, this can put pressure on the housing facilities but will cut down the over-

all workload Look at where your herd is on an individual cow basis and choose bulls to suit each one to bring up your star rating. Pick a team of AI bulls usually keep it to 3 and match the cows that are low in a specific area, fertility for example and match that to the bull that has a high rating for that area. The general rule of thumb is to AI for six weeks while activity is high in the herd and heats are easier to pick up and then introduce a bull to sweep up any cows that have not held to AI. With the opening up of the Chinese and American markets the number of export destinations that Ireland send to has increased this year but the quantities exported are down from the same period last year. The Russian ban on EU products would be affecting this but as a whole there are positive signs in the beef industry. It’s nearly one year on from the protests that happened during the high of the beef crises and the markets seem to have stabilised, although they have slipped in recent times there is no signals coming from the industry that this will continue. The numbers being killed are down on last year and factories have to hold their price to keep the production lines moving.

An old apple tree was blown down without harming anything else in a recent gale. It had very poor roots but was still bearing apples. It will be removed very soon. Weighing up your Weight Loss Options! Irene Ní Fhlannúra It appears that dieting is a modern phenomenon and that every year a new craze hits our world, claiming to be the one and only route to losing weight. Indeed, with modern technology, news spreads fast and the accessibility to diet information is at everyone’s fingertips. However, long before recent developments in the diet industry, people were trying out different diet tricks to help squeeze into corsets and increase their “attraction factor” for hundreds of years. The early 1900’s saw a definite upturn for dieting, as a controlled eating regime, as people prospered and nutrition improved. The fashion of the 1920’s and Hollywood icons with slim boy-like figures sent many a curvy lady into a bit of a spin. Every decade since then right up to today has been marked by some crazy or scary fad diet yet has consistently failed to tackle the real cause of weight gain or offer a sustainable route back to good health.

Joining Fee €45 plus €10 per class includes weekly weigh in with body composition tracking, 8 week guidebook (Autumn/Winter) and plenty support. Personalized Nutrition & Weight Loss Plans for your health needs

• FITFOOD Health & Weight loss programme starting end of September in Dingle, Annascaul and Castlegregory.

The diet industry, the business of selling plans, pills and promises, didn’t really take off until processed foods began to come to the fore in the 1960’s. Not surprisingly, the major players in the food processing industry also became the major players in the dieting industry, in particular with Weight Watchers/Heinz and Nestlé/Lean Cuisine. The correlation between processed foods and the rise in obesity is as plain as daylight, yet many diet programmes are based on eating even more processed foods, meal replacers, fat binding pills or restricting food groups altogether. All in all, it is a confusing and distorted business that has profited hugely from our failures to maintain a healthy weight. As Ireland tops the tubby polls, we really need to come up with something different because despite all our low fat, low carb, fasting, liquids and cabbage soup diets we are fatter than ever! Celebrity-led fashionable dieting continues to distort our relationship with food and its function as a means to supply energy, nutrients, vitamins and minerals to maintain health and sustain life. For a weight loss diet to be truly successful you would only have to do it one time. The idea that people return to weight loss programmes time and time again is evident of their fundamental failure to deliver a sustainable way of eating. It is from this worrying perspective, much research, cooking and eating that I would like to direct you back to the table and offer something new, well, old really! FITFOOD Health and Weight Loss Programme will run for 8 weeks starting the end of September. This programme makes the daring move away from the freezer and convenient food aisles back to real, good old fashioned food! While it is based on 8 weeks, eating healthy, wholesome food is for life and it is hoped that during the 8 weeks participants will learn all the skills required to choose, plan, prepare and eat food as Nature intended with ease. Losing weight is an added bonus to greater health, energy and wellbeing. While fat mass and percentage is closely monitored throughout the programme, the factors that determine fat storage are also explored so that no matter how much or little you need to shed, you will clearly see your goals and the path to reaching them. The success stories for weight loss are firmly based on being able to sustain a way of eating over a period of time. This does not happen with fad dieting as we lose interest faster than we lose weight, returning to bad habits and ultimately putting on more weight. Adapting to a healthier, balanced approach to your everyday meals means that food is exciting, appealing, ever changing with the seasons and nourishes the whole body in many ways. Success also comes from support, from your group, friends and family as this is not a diet to be endured alone but a celebration of good food in great company. Losing weight need not be a losing battle when you shift the goal away from the scales and onto your plate! FITFOOD Health and Weight Loss 8 week programme is starting in Dingle, Annascaul (Mondays 7-8pm from Sept 28th) and Castlegregory (Tuesdays 7-8pm from September 29th). There are three classes in Dingle – Tuesday Mornings 9.30-10.30am and Thursdays evenings 7-8pm. Wednesdays 7-8pm is a Men Only class. 16 West Kerry Live

A quiet and unassuming gentleman, Dave always working hard behind the scenes achieved so much for our community and we all believe that distance will not deter Dave and Joy from keeping in touch with Camp and in his parting words to all, Dave was very happy to say that Joy and himself remain part of the same Church of Ireland Union in their new home, location. “ Ending with a shakespearean quote “A time to Stay, A time to Go, Dave bid a fond farewell to Camp and thanked everybody on behalf of himself and Joy ! Joy and Dave, we all wish you well in the future with your family and many friends. Go n-éirí an t-adh libh !

Camphill Community Dingle News Christoph Jensen This morning Betsie Koning, the pioneer of Camphill Community Dingle left for her long-awaited sabbatical (half)year. A sabbatical year in the academic world is an absence granted to further one’s own research. As Betsie is embarking on the Camino, she will have plenty of research material, in the sense of looking back – twelve years of putting this community with and for persons with special needs on the map. Those who work here, residents, co-workers and day-attendees, have a lot to be grateful for: her stamina, her engagement with the local Dingle community and her creative will-power. The results of her good-will are here for all to see. We wish her well on her trail – and may she return with new inspiration and re-charged batteries. Life is going on: last week we welcomed Kelle O’Brian from Australia who will partake in our activities for a year. Her background is teaching and she also has a liking for gardening. She will help with our adult-education programme. Welcome Kelle … Adult-education means a lot to us and is very much guided by Cornelia Kudiabor. Last Friday the persons attending her class presented us with a surreal play, written by the class themselves: ‘The Amazing Story of the Sun Eclipse’ … a ‘before-and-after’ story, how the

characters changed through experiencing a sun-eclipse. Thank you all players. As hilarious as it was, the play never descended into being silly, but gave expression to each and every ones character.

ous support on the occasion of our flag-day street-collection. With your help Camphill Community Dingle generated slightly more than € 3000.-.

Alas, our housing project in Cois Chnoic, is hitting yet another snag. In principal Kerry County Council has given the go-ahead for the 3 house project; however the case rests now with the Ministry of the Environment to iron out issues relating to municipal services. At the time of the discontinuation of the building of the estate in 2008, also the management-group of the estate dissolved into thin air, which meant that Council has no partner to discuss municipal services with. So the frustrating wait continues. We are confident that a solution to the problem can be found, but it also means that we cannot vacate our rented accommodation, putting financial strain on our services. Last Sunday we welcomed parents and siblings to a meeting presenting them with the developments regards HIQA, adult education and work-activities. We also presented our plans for Cois Chnoic as a supported selfdirected living project . We were very happy with attendance and the interest, which manifested in lively conversations after visiting the new house, which is making steady progress. We want to thank all of you for your gener-

What’s Another Year? Well it's hard to believe, but where has the year gone. Here we are again, a lot has happened in that time, the water meters have been fitted and the bills have started to arrive, so we will have to mind how we use this precious resource. We voted Yes to equality, and it has been a very busy year in West Kerry, with an increase in tourist numbers coming to our shores it bodes well for our local economy which depends so much on tourism. Well, the summer is over and it's September and Kerry in the All Ireland Final, so here's hoping!! Well as I already said, where did the time go, I can certainly say it has been a busy year for me, what with all of you that upgraded your heating systems, changed your boilers or fitted solar panels. Wether your project was big or small, it is good to see so many of you availing of the incentives. It's also great to see an increase in grant aid for this type of work, plus the carbon credits that combined with the grant aid give quite a substantial saving, not to mention the energy/money saving with a more efficient system. I see that Darragh O Sé has had his boiler and heating upgraded and changed over to Flogas from oil, in turn he has become the brand ambassador for Flogas who have embarked on an advertising campaign, Flogas are currently offering up to 1200 litres of gas free to anyone considering to do the same on top of the grant aid and carbon credits scheme, well worth checking it out. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, my family, friends, employees and customers past and present for your continued support. P.S. Best of luck to both Kerry teams in Croke Park on Sunday... Ciarraí Abú...

Kerry & Dublin: An Enduring Acquaintance Tadhg Evans

Which of the two team’s benches supports the better players? Speaking of which, will Fitzmaurice be able roll out an electric fence capable of stopping the destructive Kevin McManamon from causing havoc around the field? Can Paddy Andrews continue his resurgence? Will Kieran Donaghy, for all his abject form, start again, or will he make way for the increasingly impressive Paul Geaney?

Donegal while they were supposedly in their pomp, but the questions pertaining to their true worth have been too harsh in wording. A third title in five years would mark them out as the finest team of their era. Kerry responded in 2014 to the ridiculous suggestion that their footballing empire had been invaded by a Trojan horse and was on the verge of definite collapse. Although those doubts hardly still maintain merit, a second successive double on All-Ireland final day would spill a bottle of SAXA over the open wounds of their critics.

Ahead of Donegal’s clash with Mayo in the 2012 All-Ireland final, many observers rejoiced at the novelty of such a pairing. It was only the second time both counties had scheduled a meeting during the championship months, “Both counties will have 62 Alland they had never before danced a set at the Ireland senior titles between them. Both teams had earned their slot, and the affections of a public refreshed at the prospect of such an unfamiliar mix of colours on All-Ireland day. In many ways, the pairing of Dublin and Kerry could almost be marked as the exact opposite to the vista that formed looking ahead to that 2012 final, but is no less invigorating. If anything, it’s even more attractive to the eye of a gaelic football supporter. The palette of fate has mixed the familiar sky blue with the dominant green and gold over many decades, but the combination is every bit as alluring now as it was when the teams first met over one hundred years ago. It never dulls. It can’t. By Sunday evening, barring a replay, both counties will have 62 All-Ireland senior titles between them. The other thirty segments that make up our island can only stake a claim to 68. Matches between the pair have been frequent, and often electrifying. The 2011 final was only won with the last meaningful kick, their duels in finals in the 70’s and 80’s provide the cream of GAA nostalgia, while their semi-final meetings in 1977 and 2013 are widely regarded as the two greatFor the month of September we are offering est games of football ever contested. one FREE month of membership Any meeting between the two counties carries with it a set of questions. Dingle Food Festival Sunday 4th October, 10-2 Food Rescue Join us for a meal with your neighbours!

Ireland Throws away 1 million tonnes of food each year….. Help us tackle the problem of food waste in your community, get involved with ‘Food Rescue’. What is Food Rescue?

We empower local communities to hold ‘Food Rescue’ dinners with food that would have been thrown away or rejected by supermarkets, businesses and restaurants. Food waste is a waste of resources (resulting in a waste of money) and imposes a heavy burden on the environment. Through Food Rescue, individuals and businesses can see for themselves that a wonderful meal can be made with ‘ugly’ food or food that is close to its use-by date instead of throwing it away. Additional fun activities are encouraged such as leftover food cooking demonstrations, composting demonstrations, ’ugly food’ give-aways and more! Can I be involved? Absolutely!

We are looking for volunteers to help out at the Dingle Food Festival on Sunday the 4th October . We need help chopping, cooking, and serving. To find out more or if you want to volunteer, please contact Azarah Minihan at VOICE (01) 642 5741 or info@voicireland.org

St. Kilda Island On The Edge Of The Western World Caint Léirithe le / Illustrated Lecture with Maureen Kerr Artist, Author & sometimes resident of St. Kilda Dé hAoine, 18/09/2015 @ 7.30pm Ionad an Bhlascaoid The OPW Great Blasket Centre Tabharfaidh an t-údar agus an t-ealaíontóir Albanach Maureen Kerr caint léirithe faoi St. Kilda, oileáin bheaga atá tuairim is 50 míle laistiar d’Inse Ghall in iarthuaisceart na hAlban, in Ionad an Bhlascaoid ar an Aoine, 18/09/2015 ag 7.30 i.n. Is minic a déantar comparáid idir St. Kilda agus an Blascaod Mór. Bhí an saol cruaidh, anróch céanna acu agus bhí an deireadh céanna i ndán dóibh, mar gur aistríodh a raibh de dhaoine ar an mBlascaod Mór amach ar an míntír sa bhliain 1953, agus aistríodh muintir St. Kilda sna 1930aí. Tá St. Kilda faoi chúram an National Trust agus tá siad ceaptha mar dhé-láthair oidhreachta Domhanda. Tá iarsmaí seanda de bholcán ar Hirta, an t-oileán is mó, i Village Bay atá an chóilíneacht is mó agus an t-aon áit atá sábháilte le báid a theacht i dtír. Deirtear gurb iad na haillteacha sna hoileáin eile na haillteacha is airde sa Bhreatain. Tagann tumadóirí ó chian agus ó chóngar anseo mar a bhfuil na milliúin éanlaithe farraige. Tá na tithe ar mhair muintir St. Kilda, chomh maith le fothraigh seanthithe eile, le feiscint fós ar “an tsráid” in Village Bay. Tá cuid de na tithe seo athchóirithe anois ag an National Trust, agus ritheann siad saoire oibre i rith an tsamhraidh do dhaoine ar mian leo a leithéid. Tá Maureen ag obair le cúig bliana déag ar láthair mhíleata i St. Kilda. I rith an ama seo bhí sé de phribhléid aici tamall a chaitheamh ag sceitseáil agus ag tógáint phictiúirí ar an oileánrach speisialta seo. Is údar í chomh maith, foilsíodh a céad leabhar George Murray, A school teacher for St. Kilda, 1886-8 sa bhliain 2013 agus faoi láthair tá sí ag obair ar dhá leabhar eile. Labharfaidh Maureen faoi na cosúlachtaí agus na difríochtaí atá idir St. Kilda agus an Blascaod Mór, stair agus muintir St. Kilda, a taithí féin ag maireachtaint ar St. Kilda le 15 bliain, agus an seal a thug sí ar an mBlascaod le déanaí, mar ar chaith sí seachtain ag péinteáil agus ag scríobh. Tá samplaí dá cuid oibre ar taispeáint san Ionad faoi láthair. Tosnóidh an léacht poiblí seo ag 7.30 i.n., tá sé saor in aisce, agus tá fáilte roimh chách. Scottish artist and author Maureen Kerr will give an illustrated lecture about St. Kilda, a small group of islands lying about 50 miles 32 West Kerry Live

west of the Outer Hebrides in North West Scotland, in Ionad an Bhlascaoid / The OPW Great Blasket Centre on Friday, 18/09/2015 at 7.30pm. St. Kilda and the Great Blasket are often compared to each other, both having suffered the same harsh existence and the same fate of evacuation, St. Kilda in the 1930s and The Blasket in 1953. St. Kilda is owned and managed by the National Trust and have been designated a dual World Heritage site. The remains of an ancient volcano, the largest of the islands is Hirta, with the only sheltered area for boats to land and where the main settlement is to be found in Village Bay. The other islands comprise massive stacs, astonishing, breath taking cliffs and crags towering out of the sea, laying claim to the highest sea cliffs in Britain. The island group has some of the best underwater diving in Europe and is home to millions of sea birds. The houses lived in mostly by the St. Kildan families, along with their earlier more humble dwellings, survive as roofless shells in “the street” in Village Bay. Several of the houses have now been renovated by the National Trust, who run working holidays during the summer for members of the public. Over the past fifteen years, Maureen has been working at the military base on the remote island of St.Kilda. During this time she has been in the privileged position of being able to explore this unique archipelago and its wonderful light in all seasons and record through camera and sketch book, wild and normally inaccessible places. She is also a writer, her first book; George Murray, A school teacher for St. Kilda. 1886–8 was published in 2013 and she’s presently working on two other books. Maureen will speak about the similarities and differences between St. Kilda and the Great Blasket, St. Kilda's history and people, her own experience of living on St. Kilda during the last 15 years, and her experience of the Blaskets, having just spent a week living, painting and writing on the Great Blasket. Some of her works are currently on display in the Centre. This free public lecture will begin at 7.30pm, and all are welcome.

So, the summer came and left us feeling a bit cheated? Of course that is not entirely true. It is all down to perception and there were some great days spilling with an array of wonderful activities for all ages and we do live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Me? In some ways I had an absolute ball, I got to relive my teenage years with some fabulous young people facilitating Zumba classes “as Gaeilge” thanks to Coláistí Gaeilge all over the peninsula. We danced our little and big hearts out. In addition I also had a chance to facilitate classes to wonderful kids from Spain and Italy thanks to the School of of English in Killarney. I have to admit , doing this work over the summer has reignited my respect for teenagers, YES , they can put down their phones and enjoy dancing and other activities. All down to perception. I was also heartened to see a lady who has been coming to my classes since January looking somewhat slimmer and more toned. She knows who she is. However despite all the wonderful things this summer, including taking part in aerial yoga classes (highly recommended by the way), I felt sun-deprived and it lowered my mood at times. This is where dancing and music come in as my remedy to help me feel human again. My pre -gig sound checks at home turn into major dancing sessions in my shed or out in the yard, nothing like a set of base bins to get one moving. I was thinking, if this works for me, it must surely work for others too.The sheer joy you see on people’s faces at classes or on a wedding dance floor is a sight to behold. We were born to move and dance, it is a primal drive in us.

The book does not yet have an Irish publisher but copies are available at The Dingle Bookshop or via internet and Jill has donated a copy to the Dingle library. Every man, woman and child in Ireland has heard of the Sam Maguire Cup and indeed most Kerry people have laid a hand on it at one time or another. But, who was Sam Maguire and why was the leading trophy in Gaelic football named after him? Before I was asked to write this article I just had a vague idea that he was a personality in recent Irish history. When I began to ask people about him I discovered a profound absence of knowledge and I had to try many sources before I succeeded in painting the following picture of the man. Sam Maguire was a Protestant and a native of West Cork. He was born in Mallabraca, near Dunmanway in 1879. He was a brilliant student and had a very successful academic career. On completing his education he joined the Civil Service, which at that time, was the British Civil Service. He was transferred to London just before the turn of the 20th century. He joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood there and worked tirelessly for the Irish cause. He used his influential position in the Civil Service to obtain invaluable information which he supplied to the movement in Ireland. His position was one of great tension for him because if his activities were discovered he would be considered a traitor to the Crown and certainly executed. He became the Chief Intelligence Officer of the I.R.B. in Britain and his service to the organisation was colossal. It was Sam Maguire who swore Michael Collins into the I.R.B. and the ‘Big Fella’ always had great respect for his fellow countyman. Sam Maguire was also a footballer of renown and played for London in three All-Ireland Finals - 1900, 1901 and 1903. He captained the team in 1900 and 1903. The system at the time was that the home All-Ireland winners played London in the real final but, regrettably, London never won an All-Ireland title. In Maguire’s years they were beaten by Dublin, Tipperary and, in 1903, by Kerry who won their first final that year. Sam was described as a player of great skill, he was a shrewd defender and very mobile. He continued to serve in London and was a vital cog in the I.R.B. network during the period leading up to the 1916 Rising. He finally returned to Ireland in 1922 and, in declining health, retired to his native parish. He died there at the relatively young age of forty eight. Sam had dedicated his crowded life to Irish freedom and, like many others who did likewise, he was heartbroken because of the Civil War which certainly contributed to his early death. He is buried in St. Mary’s churchyard in Dunmanway. The famous trophy which bears his name was first presented to the All-Ireland winners of 1928, the year after his death. Bill Gannon of the Kildare ‘Lilly whites’ was the first captain to receive it and it has been presented to every All-Ireland winning team since then. The trophy is now the worse for wear and 1986 will be it’s final year of presentation. A new Sam Maguire Cup, an exact replica, will be presented in 1987 and the present trophy will be exhibited in the National Museum. The name of Sam Maguire, Gael and patriot will thus be remembered for generations to come.

Killorglin Rugby Club World Cup Competition

Beef Short Ribs Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School

KRFC is running a Rugby World Cup competition which involved predicting game results, winning margins as well as many other variables. There is up to €500 worth of prize money up for grabs!

For a real treat and not an expensive one, go to your butcher and ask for short ribs. I promise you will not be disappointed with this recipe and will become one of your regular dishes.

The competition forms have been circulating for a few weeks and now being returned. We have decided to give all you procrastinators another few days to fill them out, so all forms will need to be returned by 5pm on Friday September 18th.

Ingredients 4-6 Beef short ribs 1 Red Onion cut into large dice 1 large head of garlic, cut in half horizontally Bunch of thyme and rosemary 1 tbsp tomato purée 500ml red wine Salt and freshly ground black pepper Flat leaf parsley chopped finely

Forms and be collected and dropped off at our participating venues which are: Karl J's Bar (Milltown) Francie Sheahan's (Killorglin) Falvey's Bar (Killorglin) Tythers Bookmakers (Killorglin) Ashes Bar (Glenbeigh) O'Shea's Bar (Killorglin) Kingston's Bar and Beer Garden (Killorglin)

Method Preheat the oven to 150°C. Place a roasting tray or a casserole dish on the stove and heat it. Once it is hot season the short ribs with salt and pepper, then fry for about 10 minutes so that the take on a nice brown colour. Add the onion and herbs and then the garlic. Add the tomato purée and cook it for about 2-3 minutes to remove the bitterness. Add the wine to deglaze the pan, making sure you scrape all the brown tasty bits around the pan. Bring the wine to the boil and cook for about 10 minutes until it reduces the liquid by half, add in the stock. Cover the tray with foil and place in the oven for about 4 hours. Once cooked the meat should fall off the bone. Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with chopped flat leaf parsley. Serve with creamed potatoes and spinach. Enjoy!!!

OPENING SUMMER 2015

- I welcome the HSE decision to fund the MS drug Fampyra. I tabled a debate in the Dail on this last year and it will benefit many Kerry MS sufferers. - I have been campaigning hard for USC and personal income tax cuts for PAYE and self-employed workers and welcome indications from Ministers that there will be good news in the budget. - I have been intensively lobbying for the inclusion of the new N22 CorkKerry Road via Macroom in the forthcoming capital investment plan. This would have far reaching socio-economic benefits for all of Kerry. Best wishes to both Kerry teams and the Kerry supporters in the All-Ireland finals on Sunday!

CLG Sara mbuailfidh feanaid agus gruaim an gheimhrigh sinn beidh ‘an lá Mór’ i bPáirc an Chrócaigh againn, an Domhnach seo chugainn. Bhí cluiche an-dheas camógaíochta ann an Domhnach seo caite nuair a bhuaidh Port Láirge craobh idirmheánach camógaíochta Éireann i aghaidh Chill Dara. Bhuaidh Cill Manntáin an chraobh sóisir camógaíochta in aghaidh na Mhí ar an Satharn. Bhí na Cill Mantánaigh sna stártha. B’í an chéad chraobh Éireann riamh acu é. Thug Corcaigh arís Craobh shinsir camógaíochta na hÉireann leo in aghaidh na Gaillimhe. Bí buaite fé dhó ag an nGaillimh ar Chorcaigh níos luaithe i mbliana sa tSraith Chomórtas. An lá cheanna bhíodar níos treise agus níos diongbhálta ná cailíní na Gaillimhe. Dúras ag seisiún poiblí níos luaithe i mbliana gur iad Ciarraí agus Cill Chainnnigh a bhuafadh craobhacha na hÉireann. Tá an chéad cheann, ‘na Cait’ i gceart agus tá an phingin deireannach agam ar Chiarraí an Domhnach seo chugainn. Is beag ná dúirt i dtosach na bliana go mbuafadh Bleá Cliath an chraobh go saoráideach. Ná féadfaí iad a chlaoí. Dá mbeadh an t-ádh le Maigh Eó [ An mhallacht úd fós ina beathaigh] beadh an lá leo in aghaidh na Jeaicíní. Tá ár seasamh ar ár laochra Dé Domhnaigh. Mar bharr ar an mil, tá na mionúir seo againne ar na boilg. Beam ag súil le dhá chorn. Tá suíl agam ná beidh dálta an chearrúigh orm. Cad déarfá féin? Níl ár n-ampla sásaithe fós. Geábh Chaitheas tamaillín i dtuairceart na hIodáile le déanaí. Is ar bhruach thiar Loch Garda a bhíos ag crú na gréine, i mbaile cúláisteach Gardone Riviera. Ní raibh sé deacair san a dhéanamh, mar gur shoillsigh an ghrian go fáilteach. Baile beag timpeall 2,500 duine do dhaonra ‘sea é. Tá mionaoráid dá cuid féin aici. Bhí gealach shámh shíodúil ann gach oíche. Ní raibh puth gaoithe ann ach séideán mín in aice na loiche Má tán tú i ngrá nó ag iarraidh sos sólásach a bhaint as an saol, seo é do stáirse. Ní móran a bhí ag an mbaile sin ar Desenzano,ar an mbruach theas do Loch Garda.Tá daonra do bhreis ar 26,000 duine ar an mbaile seo.

Is deacair aon pháirt don Iodáil a aimsiú ná fuil blaise nách beag do ealaíon ann. Cé ná raibh agam ach gearr gheábhadh bhí mór shásamh ag baint lei. Nách diail an teaspach é, a déarfadh duine! Ag filleadh abhaile níor chosain an eitilt sin orm ach E 30. Is maith é an Laoireach, ainneóin an bhaisteachán. Teifigh. Is diail an gaisce é, táimíd ag glacadh 5,000 teifeach. Croí mór na nGael! Go pearsanta measaim gur beag teifeach a bheadh againn dá nglacfadh na Meiricéanaigh a suaimhneas. Gach áit a chuireadar a gcosa bradacha le blianta ba mheasa seacht nuair an áit de thoradh a gcuid útalmála. Má bhí na treabhanna muslamacha ag bagairt ar a chéile san Afganastáin agus san Iaráic lig dóibh. Thabharfadh an saol agus an aimsir ciall dóíbh. Deineadh brúscar glan don saol sna Balcáin agus i Libya. San am bhíomair ag trádáil go láidir le Libya. Margadh mór cailte. Cad a mheasann tú lena gcuid amaidí smacht bhannaí a chur ar thíortha mar Cúba agus an Rúis. Is ag cruthú naimhde atá siad coitianta agus bíonn iontas ortha nuair a tugtar fútha. Tá an domhan seo againne scólta acu. Ceist agam ort. 1. Cén pháirt dá chorp
