Dingle Historical Society presents

Medieval Pilgrims from Ireland to Santiago de Compostela An illustrated lecture by Bernadette Cunningham, Deputy Librarian, Royal Irish Academy Lecture venue: Dingle Skellig Hotel, Dingle. Date: Tuesday, 3rd Sept, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh chách - Visitors welcome The current popularity of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela is built on strong medieval foundations. Bernadette Cunningham’s lecture will trace the Irish connections with one of the major pilgrimages of the medieval Christian world, telling stories that explain why and how men and women travelled from Ireland to Santiago in the Middle Ages. Her new research draws on official documents, historical chronicles, literary texts, saints’ lives and archaeological finds to discover Anglo Norman and Gaelic pilgrims who went from Ireland to the shrine of St James in Galicia in search of salvation and perhaps a little adventure. Bernadette Cunningham’s new book on Medieval Irish Pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela was published by Four Courts Press in 2018. She has published many articles on early modern Ireland, and her previous books include The World of Geoffrey Keating: History, Myth and Religion in Seventeenth Century Ireland (2000). She is a graduate of NUI Galway and University College Dublin and is Deputy Librarian at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin.

This year’s event sold out last December which is an incredible achievement for any event. “We are thrilled to see the interest levels sky rocket in both the full and half marathon this year, with both races selling out last December” said event organiser Tadhg Moriarty.

Road Closures The half and full marathon leaves Dingle Town at 9am and heads off in the direction of Ventry to Slea head and finishes near Dunquin. There will be road closures in operation on the Slea Head route from 8.45am to 3.00pm with traffic restrictions in operation during these times until the last runner is home. Participants arriving in Dingle on Saturday morning are asked to follow the directions of Gardai and Stewards to designated car parks.

Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 3rd September where the feature will be the new Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The film visits 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore. The ninth film from the writer-director features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood's golden age. The following week on Tuesday September 10th the feature will be the internationally co-produced drama Animals. The film follows soulmates Laura and Tyler, thirty-something best friends and revellers residing in Dublin, they are ingrained in the fabric of each other's lives; dating, partying, drinking and living their life without limitations. Then Jim arrives to upset the balance. Elevated by the chemistry and bold performances of its leads, Animals takes a refreshingly frank and impressively ambitious look at female relationships. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes Richie Williams FESTIVAL OF KERRY. Congratulations to Jamie Flannery from Cooleen Dingle who was selected as the Escort of the Year at the Rose of Tralee Festival. I have no doubt that Jamie's bubbling personality, range of natural talents and interests and work rate were to the fore during his time as Rose Escort last week. Congratulations also to former Dingle resident Simone Hendrick Buchanan the Southern Australian Rose who performed very well on the TV stage and was a credit to her family and her many friends here in West Kerry. BUSINESS. Congratulations also to Mairead and Brian De Staic whose Jewellery Shop here in Dingle was named as the Jewellery Store of the Year at the Irish Independant Retail Awards recently. The Awards highlight the role of independant retailers to their communities and reward their entrepreneurial spirit. They started their business in Green Street around 40 years ago and have provided employment opportunities and new skills for many local people in the interim period as well as being involved in many organisations at local and national level.

TIDY TOWNS. The recent Irish Business Against Litter Group survey found Dingle Harbour to be moderately littered particularly with marine related items. Certainly the tide washes in a lot of litter of all descriptions much of which is disgarded in the sea in other areas and makes its way to shore depending on the prevailing winds. However we can avoid such negative publicity by properly disposing of all our litter, big or small, and making an effort to help pick up stray litter when found in public places. MILE BUIOCHAS.. MILLTOWN RIVER. The talk on the History of Milltown River postponed last week due to unforseen circumstances is rescheduled for this Friday August 30th starting at 7p.m. at Milltown Bridge. Plans are in progress at present to erect a sign in the area to highlight the flora, fauna and birdlife in the Milltown River Estuary. HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The final Lecture in the Summer Series organised by the Dingle Historical Society will be held in the Skellig Hotel on Tuesday September 3rd starting at 8p.m. The Medieval Pilgrims from Ireland to Santiago de Compostela in Spain is the theme and will be presented by Bernadette Cunningham from the Royal Irish Academy Library. These pilgrims certainly had a major connection with Dingle and should attract another full house . The new stone monument recently erected on the new link road from Spa Road to Goat Street is in a most appropriate location and fitting tribute to the connection with St James Church and the Camino Pilgrimages. MARATHON. The 11th Annual Dingle Marathon is scheduled for Saturday September 7th starting from Strand Street at 9a.m. and taking in the Slea Head route. Some road closures have been published and will be prominently signposted along the route within the next few days. With approximately 2,500 competitors and another 2,000 plus supporters in the area the co-operation of the public particularly all road users would be much appreciated. We extend a huge Céad Míle Fáilte to all who are visiting the Peninsula for the event and wishing the best of luck particularly to the competitors many of whom have sponsorship for their favourite charities. Farming News Louis Murchan BEEF EXCEPTIONAL AID MEASURE It was expected that there would be a rush on this scheme, but the findings are that the stampede has yet to happen, and may not. Any farmer who wishes to join this scheme must give permission to his advisor to submit an application on his behalf. This must be done on line. And in many cases, farmers themselves are not familiar enough with the on-line system, so are advised to allow the Professionals to make the submission.

funding earlier year this and encompasses a range of projects aimed at various age groups to visit forests and to see first-hand, and enjoy, the forest environment with its many features. The events will include Forest Summer Camp, Junior Afterschool Forest Club, Mini Forest Camps and Family days out in the forest. While we read a lot about the benefits of forestry, which include employment, income generation, biodiversity and climate change sequestration, a visit to a forest is a learning experience in itself. The launch, held in Lyrecrumpane Community Forest, serves also a ‘Wild Child Day’ event which encourages children to get out into nature during National Heritage Week. It includes exhibits at Lyrecrumpane Resource Centre, with displays of natural art and local craft demonstrations, as well as forest activities.

The important date(s) and deadline are previously stated are as follows:BEAM will open for applications from 19th August to 8th September inclusive. Applications will be accepted online through AgFood.ie.

15 projects aimed at the promotion of forestry were approved for funding in April 2019 – the Department’s Press Release of 6 April 2019 refers – available on the Department’s website at:

Applications are only accepted online to ensure that payments are made as promptly as possible.

https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/press/pressreleases/2019/april/ title,125878,en.html

To qualify, you have to have Suckler cows, and will get €40 per head for each of these, and if you send cattle to the factory, you are entitled to an additional €100 per animal killed. Animals sold to the mart, or through dealers don’t qualify.

‘Forest Connections’ will be delivered by Kerry Earth Education Project, with a variety of projects planned that are aimed at varying ages from four years to adult hood.

This really is a big farmer scheme. A “Ten-Suckler Man” with five cattle going to the mart, and five going to the factory would receive €400+€500=€900, less professional/administrative costs. So, farmers will have to weigh up their options, and evaluate if the scheme is for them, or not. Everyone who joins will have to: • be a member of or commit to joining the Bord Bia Sustainable Beef and Lamb Assurance Scheme (SBLAS) or a DAFM environmental scheme; and • reduce the production of bovine livestock manure nitrogen (total figure) per herd by 5% for a target period (1 July 2020 - 30 June 2021) compared to a reference period (1 July 2018 – 30 June 2019). If they do these, they will then qualify as follows: • Aid will be paid on adult cattle slaughtered between 24 September 2018 and 12 May 2019, at a rate of €100 per animal subject to a maximum of 100 finished animals per herd. • Aid will also be paid on suckler cows that calved in 2018, at a rate of €40 per animal subject to a maximum of 40 sucklers per herd. • Dairy herds are not eligible for the measure, with the exception of dairy herds of less than 40 dairy cows. Smaller dairy farms typically have a mixed farming enterprise, with a lower than average dairy farm income, and a beef enterprise accounting for a higher proportion of total farm income. • Animals controlled by slaughtering establishments, and dealer/agent herds, are not eligible for this financial aid. • In the event BEAM is oversubscribed, payment rates may be subject to minor revision. Some of this is repetitive, but with so little interest, there is a need to push the information. There is €100 Million in funding available from this scheme. Half of this is coming from the EU. Please don’t let the fat-cats from the North East get it all, and don’t have the government send any money back to Brussels. FOREST CONNECTIONS PROJECT LAUNCHED IN KERRY Andrew Doyle T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, with responsibility for forestry, launched a ‘Forest Connections’ project in Lyrecrumpane Community Forest, Co. Kerry, under which a number of events will be held in Co. Kerry over the next two years to promote, and increase awareness of, forests. The ‘Forest Connections’ project, which will be delivered by Kerry Earth Education Project, aims to get people of all ages out into the forests to observe, enjoy and participate in forest life, enabling them to feel connected to local forests and forests throughout Ireland, enhancing their feelings of well-being and knowledge of the essential place of forests in our lives. This is one of the forest promotion projects which was approved for 10 West Kerry Live

The proposed events include:- Forest Summer Camp; Junior Afterschool Forest Club; Mini Forest Camps; Mindspace: Stress Relief Outdoors (for second level students); Family days out in the forest; Wild Food Foraging; Mini Christmas Forest Camp; Sawmill visit; Plant Identification event for adults and Woodland Skills even (adults) Each individual project will be run by a collaboration from a pool of tutors including environmental educators, ecologists, horticulturalists and early year’s educators. The overall project will run for two years. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND MII CLAIM TALKS SETTLED ON BEEF ISSUES Things are not always what they seem. Not fond of criticising the Minister for Agriculture, (any Minister actually, as I once had a friend in a junior role, who found it tough, too tough), it is feared that his decision to intervene towards the later stages of the MMI Beef Plan Dispute had something to do with the visit of Chinese Inspectors this week to meat factories, in Ireland. Last week The Minister confirmed that talks with beef stakeholders have successfully concluded. However, were this accurate, there wouldn’t be protests outside a number of factories today, and all this week. Farmers are putting their freedom at risk, defying a High Court decision to cease protesting. Seven of the top organisers in the Beef Plan Movement risk going to jail, and being held financially responsible for factory losses. What drives these men? It’s not personal gain, as they are quite wellestablished farmers themselves, some with other sources of income also. They just want fair prices for their beef product. Two-Year Old Beef. That means that they invested two years rearing cattle to be paid pittance, and have the factory To be fair, the agreement includes commitments on the following: • Review of the grid; • Review of the in-spec criteria for the quality payment system bonus; • Availability of carcass images • Appeals system for carcass classification in manually grading factories • Publication of an expert report on new technology in mechanical carcass classification and • Promotional initiatives for the beef sector; • Market transparency initiatives, including more detailed price reporting, and the transposition of the EU Directive on Unfair Trading Practices. But it never really committed to give a fair price for a quality product, and never explained the third quarter, and what happens to it. This is the offal (kidney, lible.ver, heart, tongue, tail, brain, etc), skin/hide, hooves, horns, etc, that supposedly make up 20 to 25% of the price paid to the factories for the animal. Farmers don’t get their share of this. And that’s wrong. Protesting against the wishes or express orders of the High Court is risky. But sometimes it is necessary. So, have a thought for those who are fighting

the cause, and also putting the meat on your ta FORESTRY GRANT AND PREMIUM TO GO FULLY ON-LINE The Forestry Service is moving to a completely on-line forestry grant and premium system from 1st January, 2020. The system will be open for use from this November for applications for 2020 forestry premium payments which are due to be paid in early January. The proposal was presented and agreed with stakeholders at the meeting of the Forestry Programme Implementation Group, chaired by the Minister, which met earlier this week. This initiative is part of this Department’s drive to improve the online services that it provides to its customers and is aligned with the e-Government Strategy 2017-2020 objective of adopting a digital first approach to service delivery. The on-line facility to make payment applications relating to the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme, operated by the Department has been in place since November 2012, with increasing numbers availing of the on-line option each year.

Dingle is again well represented on the Kerry Team with five players to the fore. On behalf of the Farming Section of WKL, I would like to wish Paul Geaney and all the local lads well on Sunday. What’s the Beef…. with Beef? Irene Ní Fhlannúra

There is no doubt that the current debate on beef production both nationally and globally is heading for a major showdown. The latest report from the UN-appointed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommends slashing carbon emissions to zero by 2050 and suggests that cutting back on meat consumption is one way to move closer to this goal. This comes after weighty studies published on human health and the impact of our modern dietary patterns, which also suggest that reducing our meat intake, or rather, increasing our plant intake, would be better for us in the long run. Plant-based eating is the fastest growing food trend in Western society and the competition between major food producers to come up with a vegan-friendly “cash-cow” (pardon the pun), is fierce! With animal welfare, climate issues and health concerns at the centre of this shift, meaningful impact goes beyond the “Beyond Burger” and other meat substitutes. Sustainable progress for the whole planet begins with us, the consumer to recognize and respect the interdependent relationship between all creatures, be they humans, animals, insects, fish or birds. Humans started eating meat as a food source 2.5 million years ago. Ironically, it is thought that it was climate change that decimated plant crops around that time which led humans to scavenge the bones of animals killed by larger carnivores, picking off morsels of meat to keep them going during hungry times. At first, our ancestors did not have the capacity to digest animal meat, but over time the human digestive system evolved to digest small amounts of animal meat and when cooking meat was introduced nearly 2 million years later, humans began hunting for meat in earnest. It is thought that this was the moment in time that led to brain expansion and us becoming the humans we are today. Our ancestors probably enjoyed the thrill of the hunt and taste of the prize, but they mainly lived on a plant-based diet. It is said for every caveman hunting meat, there was a cavewoman and her children foraging 14 West Kerry Live

plants which made up the bulk of the family’s food intake. Roll on to the 21st century and the average Irish person consumes more than 80kg of meat per year, roughly twice as much as we did fifty years ago. The diversity and quantity of plant-based foods has diminished with the rise of meat consumption, refined grains and processed foods. This rapid shift in dietary patterns has been detrimental to our health and ongoing evolution, making us fatter and sicker with every generation. We are literally digging our graves with our own knife and fork! The EAT Lancet Commission report on Food, Planet and Health published earlier in the year also recommends reducing meat intake in favour of sustainably grown plant-based foods to meet the nutritional needs of our growing global population. Simply put, a diet that revolves around meat and dairy will take a greater toll on the world’s resources and human health than one that is based on unrefined grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Nutritionally speaking, beef provides us with protein, B vitamins, iron, selenium, zinc and B12 among its many nutrients. While protein deficiencies are rare in developed countries, trends in nutrition advocate increasing protein intake, particularly within the weight loss and sport industries. Depending on your stance and understanding of nutrition, valuable arguments can be made for and against this trend. However, both industries are biased, have short-term goals and do not reflect a true picture of the protein needs of the typical human, which has remained more or less the same since we evolved – roughly 0.75g per kg of body weight. This equates to about 40 – 60g protein for the average adult, depending on gender, sex and age – so, why are we consuming 220g of meat-based protein everyday?

required for making red blood cells, protecting the nervous system, healing, making DNA and for energy production. We only need tiny amounts (roughly 2.4mcg daily) and because it is only available from fish and animal sources suggests that we have a requirement to consume small quantities of these foods to obtain this vital nutrient. Best sources are oily fish, meat, dairy foods and eggs. Vegans who have excluded all animal products need to supplement the diet although B12 is available from the micro-organisms present in fermented foods, mushrooms and yeasts, but not near adequate supply. Another beefy problem comes from across the pond. The big guns in the US, Brazil and Argentina are poised to enter the EU beef market, tariff-free, resulting in cheaper beef imports which can potentially wipe out our indigenous beef industry. This week we learned of vast areas of the Amazon being deliberately set on fire to make way for cattle rearing and to grow the soya and maize to feed them. This comes on top of our own fodder shortages, falling beef prices and uncertainty of the impact of Brexit. No matter which way you look, the dung is about to hit the fan – time for us to take the bull by the horns and find an-udder way to a greener and brighter future for all of Earth’s inhabitants! Rescued by Kells Coastguard.

Edited By Ted Creedon

The brig Mary Dick, of Kircaldy [near Edinburgh], being fifteen days out from Cardiff and bound for Constantinople, put into Dingle on the 30th October, in distress, having experienced a loss of mainyards, rigging and bulwarks.

Collision With Ice Hulk From – Cork Constitution, 24 March 1890.

A collision, attended with loss of life, occurred in Dingle Bay at an early hour on Tuesday morning. It appears that a steam tug was towing an ice hulk to Ventry for one of the fishing companies based there. When coming around Bray Head, where there is always a high sea running, a barque, name unknown, collided with the hulk and almost capsized her. There were six men on the hulk. Two of them attempted to cling to the barque but fell into the sea and were drowned. Boats were immediately lowered from the steam tug and a search made for the two men but no trace of them could be found. They were both natives of Kinsale. The ice hulk was brought to Ventry where it was found to be much damaged.

It was through the instrumentality of the Kells Coast Guard she was brought in and saved from being a total wreck. Coastguard Edward Jenkins managed to board the stricken vessel from the coastguard’s boat, at the hazard of his life, and succeeded in taking her safe into Dingle harbour.

A site for a new fort at Ventry Harbour was surveyed and marked out by Captain Oliver Stokes, R. E. It appears that the Government intends to put the exposed parts of this county, as well as of other southern districts, into a state of defence. Captain Stokes was accompanied on his survey by Edward Spencer Meara, the newly-arrived Inspecting Commander of the Coastguards in the Dingle District. He is an officer in the prime of life and full of vigour. The results of their joint inspection have already been forwarded to the proper quarter, and the defence works will speedily be in course of construction. The new fort will be erected on the east side of Ventry Harbour, and within the harbour’s mouth. When finished the works will be mounted with cannon of the newest construction and of great calibre.

Some Blogs of Interest Roinnt Blaganna Spéisiúla Isabel Bennett

who researched medieval pilgrimages in Ireland for her doctoral thesis, has visited many ‘active’ pilgrimage sites on their saints’ days, and describes in her blog both how the patterns were celebrated in the past, and how the activities continue today. It is a lovely site to dip in and out of – which is what you need to do to find some of our local sites. The blog is searchable, but under general topics, rather than by county or by saint. For those interested in more wide-ranging archaeological topics, Eoin C. Bairéad has been writing an article for many years in each issue of the quarterly magazine Archaeology Ireland under the heading ‘News from the Net’, in which he seeks out and describes all the interesting and quirky items that he has noticed on-line in the previous couple of months. These articles, including the links to the news items described, are to be found at http://www.ebairead.ie/ECB_Seandalaiocht.html. Go into that worm hole and you might never emerge, as it contains really interesting material! And finally, to give a treat to the eyes as well as the mind, have a look at Howard Goldbaum’s voicesfromthedawn.com. Here you will read about many Irish (including Kerry) archaeological sites, but the folklore and stories associated with them are also included, along with interviews, in some cases, with the people who passed on these tales. For us here at Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, it is lovely to see and hear Doncha Ó Conchúir telling the stories of an Glas Ghaibhneach, a cow with very special properties, and that of Tigh Mhóire, in Dún Chaoin . Doncha’s life was intertwined with the history and heritage of the peninsula, as well as with the building in which the museum is situated, as he taught as School Master here for many years. See https://voicesfromthedawn.com/gate-of-the-cow/ and https://voicesfromthedawn.com/tigh-mor/.

Tá an t-ádh linn na laethanta seo gur féidir linn teacht ar eolas in an-chuid slite nua, ach go háirithe ar an idirlíon, níos mó ná aon mheán eile. Cé go gcaithfear a bheith cúramach a dhóthain maidir le roinnt suíomhanna, ó thaobh eolais de, tá rogha blaganna ann ag daoine léannta, ach is daoine iad a bhfuil stíl an-dheas acu agus iad ag scríobh. Na blaganna atá luaite anseo, níl siad dírithe céad faoin gcéad ar Chorca Dhuibhne, ach tá suíomhanna ó Chorca Dhuibhne luaite i ngach ceann acu. Is deacair éirí as cuid desna blaganna seo mar go mbíd chomh suimiúil! We are so fortunate today to live in a world where access to information is, for many, very easy, and often is free of charge. In the world of Archaeology, there are many Irish-based blogs, some (if not all) of which will be of interest to readers of these articles, and written by people who are well-informed, and also very passionate about their subjects. Although most are not written with a specifically Kerry emphasis, several often have pieces about this area, as well as very interesting articles about other places within Ireland, and monuments worth visiting. Irisharchaeology.ie is a blog by Wexford-based archaeologists Colm Moriarty and Adrienne Corless. The site contains a very useful Timeline for Irish archaeology, well-populated with articles which elaborate a little more on each of the time periods. Very useful for teachers (as well as the rest of us!) There are also articles on Folklore, Castles and Forts, Irish Archaeological Sites, World Archaeology and a News page. As the people who write this blog are both professional archaeologists, you can be sure of the accuracy of the posts. Holywellsofcork.com has recently expanded into this neighbouring county, and you will now see the new heading is Holy Wells of Cork & Kerry. Several of the more recent posts on this blog (which also has a Facebook page, as do most of the blogs mentioned here) relate to Holy Wells here on the Dingle Peninsula. The articles are full of adventure as the writer, Amanda Clarke, seeks out the various places and encounters interesting ‘characters’ along the way! Roaringwaterjournal.com’s main area of interest is the Roaringwater Bay area of West Cork, which is where Finola Finlay and Robert Harris, who write the blog, live. However, they too are intrepid adventurers, who don’t confine their visits to any one area, or their articles to any one topic. Archaeological matters loom large, and Finola is also very interested in stained glass, and wild flowers – but buildings, festivals, maps, artworks and so many other topics are covered. And each article is a most interesting, well written ‘read’. Pilgrimageinmedievalireland.com is an award-winning blog which, although not so active in the past few months, still has many articles of interest in relation to holy sites within Ireland. The author, Louise Nugent, 18 West Kerry Live

The programme set out to address the perceived barriers to female participation – time constraints, access and a lack of information. Jean Sheehy, Dingle, dropped in this historic picture during the week, (her copy being about a foot and a half in length!) It shows "the reception and banquet tendered to the Kerry Football Team, All Ireland Champions of 1926. June 4th 1927. New Elks Hotel, Boston Mass". They had played a game against a Boston team in Fenway park, home of the Boston Red Sox and also played in New York. This American tour gained a certain notoriety. The GAA in Kerry had helped heal the deeps wound of the Irish Civil War with those from opposing sides lining out together in the green and gold of the county. However the tensions of the time still existed in the newly founded state and the IRA was deeply involved in the 1927 tour (although the non-Republicans on the team were unaware of the fact), and it was used to raise funds for the organisation and it has been suggested that Thompson sub-machine guns made their way back to Ireland with some of the team. What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís We are looking forward to welcoming the Commission for Regulation of Utilities to the Dingle Hub on Monday, 2nd September where we will give them an overview of the many initiatives underway on the Peninsula and demonstrate the community’s involvement in projects such as the ESB Networks Dingle Project, the StoreNet Battery project taking place in Ballyferriter and the Gas Networks Ireland and Údaras na Gaeltachta LECo funded Feasibility Study for Anaerobic Digestion on the Dingle Peninsula. There is a growing recognition nationally and internationally of the critical role of community participation in the transition to a low carbon society. This is an ideal opportunity to highlight the importance of this role in a very practical way and showcase how it is working here.

This is achieved through organising workshops, events, projects, community engagement, etc. and supported by funding and grant assistance. We work in three main areas - Digital Transformation, Environmental Sustainability and Creative Industries. Manx Shearwater Alert!

Last year we collected and released more than 60 birds around the peninsula – thanks to all the people around the peninsula who picked them up and gave us a call. Some people even carried an empty cardboard box in their cars just in case they came across one of them. Thank you! The Bird Watch Ireland West Kerry Branch is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings. CY

CMY

What are they?

K

They are pigeon-sized, web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months. Why are they stranding in our towns and villages? They are attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs. What can you do if you find one? Please pick it up carefully and place it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and ring one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild.

Four good reasons to get involved 1. Manx Shearwaters are long lived birds. The oldest ringed and recovered bird was 52 years old. By picking up and helping one bird you might help dozens of generations of shearwaters yet to come! 2. The shearwaters’ parents have travelled all the way from South America to the safe breeding colony on the Blasket Islands in order to lay one single egg which they incubate for up to 55 days after which they feed the fledgling for a further 60-70 days. That’s a big effort for this protected, amber-listed little bird. It seems a small effort on our part to pick it up and release it again safely to give it one more go at finding its way south. 3. Usually they are entirely uninjured and just need a little help to get airborne again. 4. We have very few opportunities to get up close and personal with some of our more elusive wildlife. Shearwater can generally only be observed high out to sea from a boat as they breed underground on our remoter islands and only come back to their breeding burrows at night. This is a great chance for everyone to find out a little bit more about the great biodiversity here on the Dingle peninsula and to help in a small but very effective way to protect it. Last but not least let’s consider switching off some unnecessary outside lights to prevent these birds from crash landing in the first place!

7 New Monitors for Ladybird Ward, CUH

The next phase is to fit and commission the monitors. I cannot thank those who donated enough for this contribution which will have an enormous impact, and their arrival in anticipation of the coming winter season is timely indeed.

A wonderful update from the team at Ladybird Ward in CUH

- Catherine, Anna and all on Ladybird.

On Tuesday 27th of August 7 new monitors and accessories were delivered to Ladybird Ward in Cork University Hospital. These monitors were funded fully by monies raised in a walk in Dingle last year, to remember and pay tribute to Keady Clifford. All of the money donated was used to fund these monitors.

Catherine Fouhy is the Clinical Nurse Manager on Ladybird Ward in Cork University Hospital where Keady was a part of the team who care for infants and children up to 18 months. They provide invaluable care and support to all the families.

It is our intention to fit these monitors to the walls in 7 of the patient rooms, so that they will be at hand permanently to allow us to provide continuous monitoring of sick infants vital signs, heart rate, respiratory rates, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.

Ahead of the upcoming celebrity chef cookery demonstration on the 4th of October Neven Maguire, Brian McDermott and Nicky Foley from Solas have each donated wonderful prizes.

This donation has enormous benefits to the infants and indeed the staff on Ladybird. It has not only doubled the number of monitors available to us to deliver care, which adds to the comfort of infants, parents and staff, because our existing monitors on stands need to be rolled into the rooms at night, making unnecessary noise.

Support for Ladybird continues...

• Allagar na hAoine

Is i gCorca Dhuibhne a bhí an chraic ar fad i lár Lúnasa, nuair a tháinig déagóirí ósna Gaeltachtaí mórthimpeall na tíre le chéile chun freastal ar Chuideachta Dhuibhneach. Eagraithe ag Tobar Dhuibhne, Plean Teanga Chiarraí Thiar, ghlac na déagóirí páirt sna himeachtaí spleodracha go fonnmhar, rud a chothaigh dúil san eachtraíocht iontu agus a chuir barr feabhais ar a scileanna ceannaireachta leis. Blaiseadh fiántas na mara le Sea Safari, turas amach go dtí an mBlascaod, surfáil, cadhcáil agus stand-up paddleboarding. Buaic an champa don gcuid is mó ab ea campáil thar oíche! Seo a dúirt rannpháirtí amháin a bhí linn ar Chuideachta Dhuibhneach: “Bhí anspraoi agam ar an gcampa seo, thaitin sé go mór liom cairde nua a dhéanamh agus Gaeilge a labhairt go nádúrtha lena chéile. Bhí sé ansuimúil imeacht as baile ar feadh tréimhse freisin. Bhí meascán iontach imeachtaí ar an gcúrsa agus bhí seans agam rudaí nua a thriail gach lá. Bhí na cinnirí an-deas agus tuisceanach, lig siad dúinn ár saoirse a bheith againn ach choinnigh siad muid faoi smacht freisin. Fuair mé taithí ar chanúintí difriúla ar an gcúrsa seo agus d’fhoghlaim mé go leor frásaí nua.” Ba mhaith linn ár mbuíochas a ghabháil leo ar fad as teacht go Ciarraí chugainn!

Changes To Parental Leave Question I heard that there will be changes to parental leave later this year. What are they? Answer A number of changes to parental leave are due to take place in 2019 and 2020. Currently parents (and people acting in loco parentis) can take 18 weeks unpaid parental leave on behalf of children up to age eight. A phased extension to parental leave is planned. From 1 September 2019, parental leave will increase by 4 weeks to 22 weeks. From 1 September 2020, parental leave will increase again by 4 weeks to 26 weeks. The age of eligible children will increase from 8 to 12 years of age from 1 September. Currently, if your child has a disability or a long-term illness, you can take parental leave up until their 16 th birthday - there is no change to this provision. If you have already taken some, or all of the current entitlement of 18 weeks parental leave, you will get the additional weeks of parental leave, provided your child is still under the qualifying age. A new paid Parental Leave Scheme that will allow parents to take two weeks paid leave each during their child’s first year is expected from November 2019. Legislation needs to be enacted before this change can come into effect. You can follow the progress on oireachtas.ie . Roast Garlic, Chorizo and Bean Soup

& TOOLS

@ Lios Póil

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This soup is one of my favourite warming soups, especially as the evenings are getting darker. Don’t be frightened by the amount of garlic in this, when it is roasted and mixed with all of the other ingredients you will find it adds a richness and sweetness to the soup. This soup has very Spanish flavours within it, so why not to give it a small bit more body with the addition of the cannellini beans or chickpeas? It is perfectly fine to use canned beans or chickpeas but by using them dried with a little work you will have a better result. To do this soak the beans over-night then drain and rinse them. To cook them, gently simmer the beans/chickpeas in a pot with water for about one hour to one and a half until they are tender. The cooked beans can be added to the soup about ten minutes before it is ready. Serves 6 Ingredients 6 whole garlic bulbs, cloves separated but not peeled 1 large onion finely diced 2 stalks of celery finely diced

small bunch of thyme (leaves picked from the stalk) 250g fresh chorizo cut into small pieces ½ teaspoon of sweet smoked paprika 1.5 litres of chicken stock 350g cannellini beans or chickpeas cooked bunch of flat parsley stalks removed and finely chopped 4 tablespoons of rapeseed oil salt and pepper Method Roast the garlic by placing the cloves in a pan with 2 tablespoons of rapeseed oil, cover with foil and place in an oven at 180° C. Leave to cook for about 25-30 minutes. At this stage the garlic should be golden and soft. Allow them to cool slightly while reserving the oil. You can now remove and discard the skins from the garlic, leaving you with just the flesh of the garlic. Use a blender to puree the garlic cloves. In a medium sized pot over medium heat add the rest of the oil and then add the diced onion with a pinch of salt, allow the onion to cook gently for about five minutes, add the celery and thyme and continue to cook for another five minutes. Turn up the heat slightly and then add the chorizo, cook this for about three minutes. At this stage the chorizo should have caramelised slightly. Add in the smoked paprika and stir in well. Add the roasted garlic puree and the chicken stock to the pot. Bring this to a simmer and allow it to simmer for about fifteen minutes. Add in the bean or chickpeas. Cook this for a further five minutes or so. Taste and season with salt and black pepper. To serve add chopped parsley and drizzle some of the oil form the roasted garlic. Bain taitneamh as !!!

Liam Mellows Soldier of the Irish Republic le

Conor McNamara foilsitheoir: Irish Academic Press This landmark study of the life of republican leader Liam Mellows brings together letters, speeches, political writings and captured IRA documents to explore his short but dramatic life. Mellows was at the forefront of the republican movement in Ireland from its inception. Following the Easter Rising, he spent four years as the IRA’s representative in New York, attempted to import arms into Ireland, was jailed, and - worst of all - branded an informer by the Mayor of New York. Arriving back in Ireland in 1920, Mellows was responsible for the importation of arms for the republican forces during the Independence struggle. Bitterly opposed to the Anglo-Irish Treaty, he became an implacable opponent of Michael Collins, and his role in helping form the anti-Treaty IRA in 1922 contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War.

Mellows’ execution in December 1922 was among the most divisive acts of the new Irish state, and he remains an enigmatic icon for Irish republicans. Liam Mellows, Soldier of the Irish Republic, examines his beliefs, his fraught personal relationships and political betrayals, and sheds new light on his struggle in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds. = Irish Academic Press
