Food for Thought: How Nutrition Affects Your Mood and Cognitive Health Irene Flannery

B Vitamins: B vitamins, including B6, B9 (folate), and B12, are vital for cognitive function. These vitamins are involved in the production of neurotransmitters that influence mood and cognition. Studies have linked deficiencies in these vitamins to a higher risk of cognitive decline and mood disorders. Protein: Protein-rich foods like lean meats, poultry, and legumes provide amino acids, which are essential for the production of neurotransmitters. Adequate protein intake supports mood regulation and concentration. Protein eaten with carbohydrates help to slow the release of glucose, thus balancing bloods sugars and mood. Whole Grains: Whole grains such as oats, brown rice, whole rye and quinoa offer a steady supply of glucose, the brain's primary energy source. Research suggests that maintaining stable blood sugar levels is crucial for sustaining focus and a positive mood. Choline: Choline, found in eggs and peanuts, supports memory and cognitive function. WE now know that choline is essential for the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory. Choline is often added to supplements aimed at supporting cognitive health and the ageing brain. FOODS TO ENHANCE MOOD Nutrition doesn't just affect cognitive health but also plays a significant role in our mood. Certain foods have been found to have a positive impact on mood and reduce the risk of mood disorders: Here are some of the favourites!

Have you ever noticed how your mood and thinking can change after a hearty meal or a sugary snack? It's not just a coincidence. The food you eat plays a significant role in shaping your mood and cognitive health. The connection between what we eat and how we feel has been a topic of increasing interest in the field of nutrition and mental health. Research studies have revealed how nutrition plays a crucial role in influencing mood and cognitive health. The Food and Mood Centre at Deakin University, Australia is a worldleading, multi-disciplinary research centre specializing in Nutritional Psychiatry, which aims to understand the complex ways in which what we eat influences our brain, mood, and mental health. The team of researchers there are leading the way in this new and innovative approach to our mental health and wellbeing. Here are some of their findings and some suggestions to put the theory into practice! THE BRAIN-NUTRITION LINK The human brain is an intricate organ responsible for regulating emotions, thoughts, and actions. Just like other parts of our body, the brain requires specific nutrients to function optimally. Research suggests that a balanced diet can significantly impact cognitive function and emotional well-being. Our biggest problem these days is understanding what constitutes a balanced diet. A simple rule of thumb is to keep your food as natural as possible with minimal or no processing. Understand the ingredients you are consuming and never eat anything you cannot spell! KEY NUTRIENTS FOR COGNITIVE HEALTH Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 fatty acids, primarily found in fatty fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, tuna and herring are essential for brain health. Some plant foods such as flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts can be decent sources of Omega 3 but require some extra work in the gut before their active fatty acids are made available to the body. Studies have shown that omega-3s play a role in improving memory, concentration, and reducing the risk of cognitive decline. If you like oily fish, try to include it in your diet at least three times per week, topping up with plant-based omega 3 from nuts and seeds. Interestingly, most of the benefits we get from Omega 3 occur when Omega 6 fatty acids are significantly reduced in the diet. While increasing omega 3 foods be sure to reduce your intake of refined seed and nut oils (including rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, vegetable oil, fried foods, cheap processed oils and junk foods). Antioxidants: Foods rich in antioxidants, such as colourful plant-based foods, berries, dark chocolate, and spinach can protect brain cells from oxidative stress. Research indicates that antioxidants help mitigate inflammation in the brain, which can benefit cognitive health. 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Dark Chocolate: Dark chocolate contains antioxidants and compounds like theobromine and phenylethylamine, which have mood-enhancing properties. Enjoying a small amount of dark chocolate can release feelgood chemicals in the brain. For the real benefits of chocolate, as Nature intended, look for dark chocolate with more than 75% cocoa solids. The poorer versions of chocolate with less cocoa solids and more added sugar and emulsifiers might offer a short-term lift but ultimately will let you down..miserably. Bananas: Bananas are rich in tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with a positive mood. Including bananas in your diet can help promote a more cheerful disposition. Other foods that are high in tryptophan include turkey, tuna and tofu – and coincidentally begin with the letter T. Nuts: Nuts like almonds and cashews are high in magnesium, a mineral known to influence mood regulation. Magnesium can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. Nuts also contain healthy fats and protein, which we have just learned are great brain foods. A closed fistful of nuts is plenty to get the brain boost without overdoing it on the calories. Berries: Berries are not only rich in antioxidants but also fibre, which helps stabilize blood sugar levels and prevent mood swings. The natural sugars in berries provide a gentle energy boost. Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens are excellent sources of folate, a B vitamin associated with a lower risk of depression. Incorporating leafy greens into your diet can help maintain a positive mood. THE GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION Emerging studies emphasize the importance of eating a variety of plantbased foods to maintain gut health, which, in turn, affects mood and cognition. A healthy gut can enhance the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which play a crucial role in mood regulation. No doubt there is more to come from this emerging science but in the meantime, when you plan your meals or reach for a snack, remember the powerful connection between nutrition and your brain. Choosing foods that nourish your mind, not only fills your belly in a moment but will put you on the path to improved mood and cognitive well-being for years to come! Farming News Louis Murchan MINISTER MCCONALOGUE PROVIDES UPDATE ON ACRES SCORECARDS The Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) is the agri-environment scheme replacement for GLAS that was supposed to be more like REPS. However, it has no similarities to REPS, except for the word “Scheme”.

the total due. Retention of the other 30% only prolongs the agony and duplicates the workload of DAFM staff. Before we get beyond ourselves, this all adds up to roughly €4,346 per farmer. Considering that some farmers can receive very high amounts, this means that most farmers you meet around here are receiving much less that this. Many farmers may have been expecting what was called a Greening Payment on top of this, but that has been done away with, and they will be disappointed when they finally get paid.

There are two approaches within the Scheme: ACRES General, available nationally which offers a range of measures; and ACRES Co-operation, available to farmers in defined high priority geographical areas.

Payments will be visible in farmers’ bank accounts in the coming days and the department will continue to pay out but not all will be paid in the first week. It could take many weeks to get everyone paid out.

ACRES CP Teams assigned one of 10 scorecards to the relevant habitats in late spring, with the system opening to advisors to complete scoring in early June.

Payments under the 2023 Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme (ANC), which started last week, are also continuing, as more cases are cleared for payment. Again, we are reminded that this should have commenced during the Ploughing Championship, and that was a month ago.

The Dept of Agriculture recently provided an update on scorecards received and stated his “Delight…with the number of completed scorecards received with the submission rate now above 98%”. Results-based payments and the use of scorecards is an essential element of ACRES placing much more pressure on farmers to get things right across farms in Ireland. In total over 170,000 scorecards were issued across 10 scorecard types. Apparently, Ireland is the leading farm community in this results-based approach with over 25% of all agricultural production land now scored. It remains to be seen but according to DAFM sources ACRES will deliver over 500,000 trees, over 2,000 kms of hedgerows and the data from the scorecards will provide us all with an important baseline for the status of the ecological condition of our land. These scorecards may be a valuable resource but are seen by many farmers and advisors an infringement on their rights. They could choose not to participate in these schemes but a serious cost to their annual income. In the days of increasing inflation and cuts across the board in other farm payments, they can little afford to take this kind of cut. On top of this, farmers must now attend a ACRES course or they will be removed from the scheme. Despite this insistence on course attendance, DAFM would not provide a course for farmers, Farm Advisors had to devise these, themselves, yet DAFM inspectors can at any time attend and either accept or reject these courses. BISS Payment Issued: Tuesday 25th October saw the commencement of advance payments under the 2023 Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) and Complementary Redistributive Income Support for Sustainability (CRISS). This is over a week later than previous years, and it looks that this date will stick for the future. This is on top of the ANC payment being over 3-weeks later than previous. While our minister tries to glorify this as being the second Tuesday in October that Farm Payments have been issued, it may be correct, but they are mush later than other years, and he should be honest. These are part of the BISS & CRISS payments worth over €452 million to 103,764 farmers and adds up to approximately 90% of applicants that are currently eligible being paid. However, it is only 70% of 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

For anyone confused about the names and anacronyms of these payments, please read the following: • The Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) replaces the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS). The BISS is designed to provide a direct income support to Irish farmers to underpin their continued sustainability and viability. • The Complementary Redistributive Income Support for Sustainability (CRISS) is a new scheme that is designed to redistribute CAP funds from larger farms to medium and smaller sized farms. • The Eco-Scheme has been introduced for the first time as part of the CAP Strategic Plan 20232027. The aim of the Eco-Scheme is to reward farmers, from all farming sectors and from different levels of intensity, for undertaking actions that are beneficial to the climate, environment, water quality and biodiversity. • The Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS), Complementary Redistributive Income Support for Sustainability (CRISS) and Eco-Scheme are funded by the EU. For those awaiting word on the whereabouts of their payments, patients is advised. It is needed, as in the past Farm Advisors had access to much of this information. Now they must join the queue when requesting this information deom DAFM. And, they can only enquire about 2 clients at a time. They may have to wait 15-20 minutes to get through to BISS helpdesk. Then they are told that they may only enquire about three herd numbers, in one call. 86,419 FARMERS REGISTER ON FERTILISER DATABASE. The database became fully operational at the end of July following the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertiliser Regulations 2023 Act being signed into law. From September 1, 2023, it was compulsory for farmers and other professional fertiliser end-users to be registered on the database to purchase fertiliser (including lime). This means that from that date it was an offence to sell or purchase fertiliser without being registered. All farmers are registered on this database. According to DAFM figures, 86419 farmers have now registrations on the National Fertiliser

Database as a professional fertiliser end user (PFEU). 72 of these registrations have been made by non-farmer PFEU’s, the department added. A further 155 farmer registrations as a fertiliser economic operator have also been completed. Under the legislation, farmers must register as a fertiliser economic operator if they are involved in importing fertiliser (from a third country or another EU member state) and involved in farm-to-farm transfers of fertiliser. Farmers were also required to declare closing fertiliser stock on their farm as of October 15. ACRES - TRANCHE II IS COMING: There is much confusion about ACRES Tranche II. The IFA recently announced that it would open on 15th October 2023. This has not happened. Some people say they saw in other Farm publications that it is open, and are calling and calling to Farm Advisors asking that an application be submitted. This cannot be done. The simple fact is that the scheme is not open and no Farm Advisors have stated that they are open for business, ACRES-Wise. It simply is not open. While farmers are told to start preparing for the opening of Tranche 2 of the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) there is nothing they or their advisor can do. The system is not open, so it cannot be ascertained what plots are in CP or General ACRES. These decisions are decided by DAFM, we are decision takers (not makers). Now apparently it has emerged that the scheme will open in early November most likely with a very tight deadline, to put advisors under even more pressure. Worse still, Mr McConologue said recently that he will be allowing 4,000 new entrants into ACRES. This is a pittance, especially in light of the 46,000who applied in Tranche I, and the anticipated 65,000 farmers who expressed interest in the scheme. Doing the maths, this would leave 15,000 farmers in the wilderness, without any payment. €1 MILLION ORGANIC NATIONAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN Bord Bia will commence the largest ever national campaign for Irish organics. The campaign commences on November 6th and runs until December 17th, with a second burst in spring 2024 and was announced at The Natexpo International Trade show for organic products in Paris. Over 2,000 farmers joined the Organic Farming Scheme in 2023, doubling the number of organic farms in Ireland. There are now approximately 180,000 hectares under organic production in Ireland, representing 4% of total agricultural land. The Climate Action Plan targets an increase in the area of land under organic production to approximately 445,000 hectares, or 10% of land, by 2030. Bord Bia worked with key organic stakeholders throughout the campaign development via the Organic Forum, which consists of key organic industry stakeholders, including farm organisations, retailers and processors. According to the study, over eight in ten Irish shoppers buy organic food and drink in some capacity. One in two shoppers claim to buy organic meat and/or dairy on a weekly basis, and eggs and vegetables are the largest category for organic shoppers. A new market led strategic plan for the development of the organic sector is currently in development. The current National Organic Strategy was developed in 2019 and runs to 2025 and the new Strategy will plan the development for the sector to 2030 in line with Food Vision 2030.

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest Ted Creedon This series of articles is taken mainly from the British Newspaper Archive (BNA) covering a period from the early 1700s to the 1920s. The Southwest of Ireland relates to the counties of Clare, Kerry and Cork officially. The focus will be on Kerry with occasional items from the other two counties. Extraordinary Birth - Kerry Evening Post, 30 December 1865 About a fortnight ago the wife of a labourer living near Dingle gave birth to a son. Over the following week she appeared to be convalescing rapidly until the sixth day of the birth. On that day she was again seized with the pains of childbirth and in a few hours was delivered of a daughter. The mother and twins are reported to be making good progress. Thomas Ashe Court-martial - Kerry News, 12 September 1917 Thomas Ashe, tried by court-martial on a charge of attempting to create disaffection (sedition) in a speech delivered in County Longford, has been sentenced to one year’s imprisonment with hard labour. (The Longford speech was in Ballinalee where Michael Collins also addressed the gathering. Some sources state Ashe was sentenced to two years hard labour. He died on hunger strike on September 25, 1917.) Cholera in Annascaul - Kerry Evening Post, 08 August 1832 Mr. William Hamilton of Ballinclare, a very respectable farmer, was taken ill on Friday last with cholera. While every aid that vicinity could afford was promptly used by Captain Eagar of Minard, the Parish Priest and many others, he sank rapidly under the dire effects of this dreadful malady and yesterday departed this life. The people of Annascaul and the wider area are being urged to use every precaution to avoid possible contact with this disease and not to attend wakes or other gatherings. Dingle Neglecting the Destitute - Kerry Evening Post, 25 November 1846 Our readers must be already aware that the Tralee Board of Guardians have consented to provide workhouse relief in the town of Dingle for the destitute of that locality at the earnest entreaty of the Corkaguiny Guardians. A committee was nominated ten days ago to report on the subject but it appears that those who were so anxious to proceed are now going cold. The committee were to have met on Monday last but we have been informed that no such meeting took place. Can this be true? If it is, Dingle gentlemen have either shamefully deceived the Board or they are sinfully neglecting the destitute.

and Weir have been dismissed from the force for the crime of matrimony – their conduct in every other particular being irreproachable. Apparently, they were guilty of not seeking permission to marry, from their superiors, and for failing to have their prospective wives approved by the R. I. C. David Leary, who was charged with stealing a cow at the Assizes, was tried, convicted and sentenced to Transportation for life. (Probably to Australia). Richard Stack was also tried, convicted and sentenced to death for the violation of Catherine Cusack, at Newtown Sands. No date was fixed for his execution and the jury has recommended the prisoner to mercy. The Grand Jury at the Assizes has most laudably presented £900 towards the completion of the Tralee ship canal. (Work on the canal began in 1832 and it would be a further 15 years before it was opened. The delay was due to funding problems). Terrible murder in South Kerry -Clonmel Herald, 09 August 1828 John Fitzgerald was charged with the murder and robbery of Michael Callaghan, a boy of only twelve years of age. The poor boy lived in Iveragh and was sent to Caherciveen to sell a basket of potatoes. He sold them for 8 pence – 6 pence in silver and 2 pence in copper. On his journey home, while crossing in a wherry (a light rowing boat) he met the prisoner who lived within a quarter of a mile of Michael and who asked him where he had been. When they left the boat the prisoner ran ahead of the boy. It was getting dark at this stage and sometime later they were both seen together in a field. That was a short distance from where the boy’s body was discovered the next morning. The prisoner had a hold of the deceased and was dragging him with a rope which had strangled the boy. When the accused was arrested he had 6 pence in his pocket and some tobacco. The shoes he wore were compared with footprints found in the field where the murder took place and they matched perfectly. Fitzgerald was sentenced to be executed and his body to be dissected and anatomised. (The corpse was cut open and an autopsy carried out in public view. It seems this practice ended in 1832).

Giving a Hoot In the summer of 1869 two men were riding a horse through the streets of Dingle. They were Daniel Moriarty and James Kavanagh. Suddenly, two youths began hooting at them causing the horse to rear up and fling its passengers onto the street. Both men were injured when they hit the ground. Moriarty had a broken collar bone plus cuts and bruises while Kavanagh’s hip bone was knocked out of joint. The perpetrators, John Manning and Michael McDonnell, were charged with frightening the horse and were brought to court. It seems that Manning was the main culprit and was fined £1 plus ten shillings costs while McDonnell was fined 5 shillings and 5 shillings costs. Annascaul / Inch Hospice committee. Thanks to all who supported our coffee morning on September 21st in Annascaul Community Centre. There was great turn out on the day. A total of €1,980 was collected.

Message from Fr Michael Moynihan It is difficult to believe that November is fast approaching. The time goes by so quickly. During November we are encouraged to pray in a special way for our dead. We do so in the belief that our prayers will help them on their journey to eternal life. We also hope that when we die others will remember us in their prayers. Belief in the Resurrection is a central part of our faith. As we write out the list of names of our loved ones who have died it is a time of precious memory. These people have been part of our lives, maybe parents who did so much for us, friends with whom we have shared happy times or children who are gone before their time. All helped to make us who we are. Their memory is precious to us and precious to God. A Nine-Day Novena of Masses, remembering all those on the November dead lists, will be celebrated as follows: Friday November 3rd – 6.15pm in St. Mary’s Church, Dingle. Saturday November 4th – 7.30pm in Sacred Heart Church, Annascaul. Sunday November 5th – 11.30am in St Mary’s Church, Dingle. Monday November 6th – 7.30pm in Séipéal Naomh Caitlín, Fionn Trá. Tuesday November 7th – 7.30pm in St John the Baptist Church, Lios Póil. Wednesday November 8th – 7.30pm in St Joseph’s Church, Inch. Thursday November 9th – 7.30pm in St Mary’s Church, Camp. Friday November 10th – 6.15pm in St. Mary’s Church, Dingle. Saturday November 11th – 7.30pm in Sacred 24 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Heart Church, Annascaul. On Friday November 10th in St Mary’s Church, Dingle we will remember by name all those who died since last November. If anybody wishes to have a deceased relative or friend who has died over the past 12 months remembered at this Mass, contact Dingle Parish Office by Wednesday November 8th. That Mass, for the Dead of the year, will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church Annascaul on Saturday November 11th, names can be given to Annascaul Parish Office by Wed Nov 8th. Sincere thanks to all who have returned the November Offering and lists. If you have not already done so, we would appreciate your

returning them as soon as possible. Your list of the dead can be placed with the offering in the envelope provided. If paying by cheque, please make it payable to Teach na Sagart. Spare envelopes and lists are also available at the back of the churches of the parish. Many thanks for your continued generosity. In St Mary’s Church, Dingle on Wednesday November 1st, from 5.00pm – 8.00pm we will have a cross in the sanctuary with candles lit upon it as part of prayer time around the cross in memory of our deceased relatives and friends. All are welcome to come along for a while to pray. Yours in Christ, Fr Michael

Scoil N. Eoin Baiste, Lios Póil, 30 Bliain ag Fás! Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh ‘Fáilte romhaibh go dtí scoil Eoin Baiste i Lios Póil ar an ócáid speisialta so, ceiliúradh deich mbliana fichead bunú na scoile ar an láthair seo, agus seomraí breise curtha leis le déanaí, agus ócáid álainn ar fad againn ó mhaidin ar an láthair – báisteach throm ó mhaidin, ach is deacair gliondar agus mórtas pobail an pharóiste seo a mhúchadh go deimhin,’ i bhfocla oscailte Helen Ní Shé ar an ‘Saol ó Dheas’ RTÉ, RnaG ar an Aoine seo chaite. Misniú do phobal Lios Póil an clár suntasach so a craoladh ón scoil ar an 20 Deireadh Fómhair, 2023.1 Tugaim blaiseadh den ócáid anso le rogha míreanna ón gclár, mar eolas do léitheoirí Corca Dhuibhne Beo, agus mar thaifead ar ócáid stairiúil na muintire i Lios Póil. Tá paróiste Lios Póil i nGaeltacht Chiarraí agus i Scoil Naomh Eoin Baiste tá morchuid leanaí, Ón Mhin Aird ón gCinn Aird is ós na hAcraí, Ach deirimse leat, bíonn ann spórt agus spraoi. Is mór an onóir domsa fáilte chroíúil a chur romhaibh go léir, agus tá ana-áthas orainn sibh a bheith inár dteannta anso inniu. Osclaíodh an scoil seo i 1993 agus ceadaíodh ceithre sheomra ranga cé go raibh seisear múinteoirí ann. Mar sin, bhí níos mó seomraí ag teastáil ó thús. Cuireadh iarrataisí go dtí an Roinn le blianta beaga anuas chun síneadh a chur leis an scoil. D’éirigh linn maoiniú d’fháil i 2021 a bhuíochas don Aire Oideachais, Norma Foley. Ár mbuíochas leo seo a leanas a chabhraigh leis an dtogra seo a thabhairt chun críche: Mícheál Ó Móráin a chuir iarrataisí ar aghaidh sara dtánga anso, agus a shín chugam an comhad nuair a thosnaíos i 2006, Deirdre Nic an tSaoir agus Nuala Uí Ghearailt a lean leis an obair agus mise as láthair, agus a thug gach tacaíocht nuair a thána thar n-ais. Buíochas mór le Siún san oifig a choimeád súil ghéar ar gach a bhain leis an dtogra agus a thug gach cabhair – mo bhuíochas ó chroí libh.

Táimse agus an scoil go mór fé chomaoin agaibh, agus tá buíochas speisialta agus bualadh bos mór tuillte agaibh. Anois iarrfad ar an Aire Oideachais, Norma Foley, cúpla focal a rá – gura míle maith agaibh. Norma Foley Dia dhaoibh go léir! Is onóir mhór domsa mar Aire Oideachais a bheith anso. Ba mhaith liom ar dtúis mar Aire Oideachais mo bhuíochas a ghabháil as ucht an cuireadh, agus as an deis seo a thabhairt dom bualadh agus labhairt libh inniu. Tá fíor-áthas orm a bheith anseo i Scoil Eoin Baiste don Oscailt Oifigiúil do Shíneadh na Scoile agus don Áit Fágála. Cuireann sé lúcháir orm i ndáríre a bheith in bhur measc inniu agus sinn ag teacht le chéile chun 30 Bliain na Scoile a cheiliúradh. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil le Bord Bainistíochta na Scoile, le hÁine (Uí Loingsigh) an príomhoide, agus le Nuala (Uí Ghearailt) príomhoide tánaisteach na scoile, agus le Caitríona (Ní Fhallúin) Cathaoirleach an Bhoird, agus go mórmhór le foireann iomlán na scoile. Is scoil álainn í seo ar imeall thoir de Ghaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne, agus is suíomh iontach é seo i mbaile fearainn Gharraí na dTor le h-ais gort caide agus Ionad Pobail Lios Póil. Léigh Nuala Uí Ghearailt litir gháirdis ó Uachtarán na hÉireann, Michael D. Ó hUiginn, agus cuireadh clabhsúr cuí leis an gceiliúradh le rince is ceol is bia blasta. Ba ag leanaí na scoile a bhí an nóta binn scoir agus ‘Amhrán na nGael’ (a chum Maebh Ní Bheaglaoich) á chanadh le mórtas acu: Cá bhfuil croí, anam, corp is spiorad na nGael, cá bhfuil an grá, an bród dár gcine fhéin? • An increase in US visitors during the autumn of 2022 and from the early months of 2023 from the Eastern States. Personal contact with potential visitors is a key part of the Meitheal of the Showcase. Collectively, all contacts at The Big E are encouraged to not only stay on the Dingle Peninsula but to stay longer, come offseason, experience so many of the local things to see and do, and connect with relations and local community. Businesses back home have not only welcomed visitors / customers that they met at The Big E but have also welcomed them while the team are still promoting at The Big E! Being at The Big E allowed the team to successfully influence the 23 percent of visitors who planned to visit in the fall of 2022 (CTCD/DPTA Market Research Survey, 2022); • An increase in US visitors to their websites – Google Analytics; • An increase in the growth of direct and online commission-free sales for individual businesses from the US market;

Nuacht Bia Dingle, the Corca Dhuibhne Food Network

• An increase in their confidence of the potential of this market for future growth;

• A deeper understanding of how to adapt and grow sales in the US market;

Review of Corca Dhuibhne’s Cultural, Educational, Trade and Tourism Showcase Activities from The Big E 2022 and 2023 Attending and non-attending businesses have noticed since 2022 the increase in sales from the U.S. market on site in Corca Dhuibhne. The ‘Meitheal’ of the businesses at The Big E is tangible and it has made a very positive impact to the region. With Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne / Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (CTCD/DPTA) in a coordinating and promotional role, since 2019, businesses now welcome many new customers from New England and U.S. East Coast, both independent visitors and special interest and family groups From the collective point of view, exhibitors felt that their attendance at The Big E was significantly beneficial to their business. While sales at the show are still developing, they can already see the benefits of having attended through their ‘new’ US traffic online on their individual websites and www.dingle-peninsula.ie saw traffic increase for the latter part of 2022 and 2023 as visitors researched and planned their ‘vacations’ for 2023. The peninsula and attending businesses experienced:

• Ongoing and renewed relationships developed with counterparts in West Springfield and the greater Springfield region, the Irish Cultural Center of West Springfield, CTCD/DPTA and Western Mass Tourism Organization; • Tourism – promotion of extended stays and off-season holidays showcasing cultural, activity, food and leisure holidays leading to direct bookings. This has already been evidenced by the people CTCD/ DPTA met at The Big E and those who travelled to Corca Dhuibhne later in 2022 and 2023 because they met the team at The Big E; and, • Diaspora - recognising that travel destinations are often influenced by family connections, the Western Mass region and New England are home to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, with Irish ancestry and with family still residing in Dingle, Corca Dhuibhne and County Kerry. CTCD/DPTA is now more confident that this will serve as a lure for increased travel to visit friends and relatives travelling both ways for the future with Western Mass Tourism Organization in the early planning stages of a promotional cultural and tourism visit to Corca Dhuibhne in 2024. Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne will also be bringing a group of students to West Springfield in April 2024 following the successful visit of West Springfield High School to Corca Dhuibhne in April 2023.

The catchment area for The Big E represents approx. 34% of all US visitors to Ireland (Fáilte Ireland, 2019) and is an ideal location for promoting not only Corca Dhuibhne, but also Kerry and the Island of Ireland to this enormous market and substantial diaspora. Over 25% of the local population of West Springfield has Irish ancestry and this region, as we know, is where the diaspora of the Blasket Islands and Dingle Peninsula settled. Visitors who stay longer bring a more environmentally friendly type of tourism and create valuable income for Corca Dhuibhne. Most of our businesses - accommodation suppliers, activity providers, shops, pubs, and restaurants, are owned and run by locals. By promoting and encouraging diaspora to stay longer – at least 5 to 7 days to immerse themselves in the peninsula, visitors create employment and support the local economy by connecting with us, their family roots, and experiences. Farmers, fishers, local musicians, artisan food and drink producers, artists and craft producers are supported in turn by our discerning visitors and diaspora who ‘stay a little longer’. CTCD/DPTA would like to thank every business that can be part of the Corca Dhuibhne Cultural, Educational, Trade and Tourism Showcase. The quality of their exhibits and products literally bring the magic of the Dingle Peninsula to West Springfield, Western Mass and greater East Coast region. Each, as you know, are amazing Ambassadors showcasing the authenticity of the Dingle Peninsula. A sincere ‘Míle Buíochas’. The Corca Dhuibhne Pavilion itself was sponsored by the Eastern States Exposition, The Big E, and this has created a spiritual home for the Showcase in West Springfield. This collaboration with our Sister City West Springfield, Diaspora, Corca Dhuibhne family-run businesses, communities and funding agencies has developed further, many pre-existing diaspora relationships but significantly, developed new relationships and most importantly connected with third and fourth generations of Diaspora who had lost connections in Ireland over time. The sense of “one community in two places” has resonated with all and continues to create magical connections for the community of Corca Dhuibhne.

use your blender to bring it to a smooth soup. Taste it and season it well with salt and pepper. For the garnish mix the crème fraîche, sage and the lemon zest. Season this with a small pinch of salt. Spoon some of crème fraîche in the middle of the soup and serve. Bain Taitneamh As!

At this time of year, every time you go to the shop you should notice the abundance of butternut squash and pumpkins. Grab some and make this delicious soup. The sweetness of butternut squash makes it so versatile; you will find that once you start to use it that it will start to be added to so many of your dishes. The one thing that puzzles people is how to remove the skin, it is easy, lay it flat, cut it in half, slice the top and bottom of it and now stand each piece up and keep rotating it as you slice from top to bottom. Hope you enjoy it. Ingredients oil knob of butter 2 red onions, peeled and diced 4 cloves of garlic, crushed 1 carrot, peeled and diced 2 butternut squash, peeled, (seeds removed) and cut into large chunks 1 litre of good vegetable stock 200ml of cream a few sage leaves, chopped very finely (keep a few back for the garnish) 1 lemon, zested 2 tbsp. crème fraîche salt and pepper Method In a large pot over a low to medium heat a little oil and butter, then the diced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook this for about five minutes then add the garlic. After about 2-3 minutes add the carrot and make sure you stir it occasionally. Allow this to cook for about 3 minutes before you add the pumpkin. By adding in the ingredients one by one this will help to give you more depth of flavour. Cook the squash for 10 minutes. Add enough warm stock to cover the vegetables by about an inch. Season this well with salt and pepper. Simmer this for about 30 minutes. Add in the cream. At this stage if you feel everything is cooked

CRIME PREVENTION. Window stickers should now be visible in a good number of business outlets around town highlighting the "See Something Say Something" initiative by An Garda Siochana supported by Kerry County Council and Dingle Business Chamber.

And my opportunity to remind our readers that when starting your Christmas Shopping please start LOCAL and remember every €10 spent in local outlets on local goods and services is worth €25 to the local economy. (Proven figures constantly repeated by the Consumers Association of Ireland.).

This initiative was successfully launched in Tralee and Killarney a few years ago and resulted in a significant reduction in crime, particularly public order in both towns., Dingle is the first town in the country to offer the opportunity to the public to use the service in either the English or Irish Language. All messages received through the system are treated as anonymous by An Garda Siochana who say that well over 98% of the calls so far relate to genuine concerns and not fake or false alarm activities Basically the purpose is for members of the public who see, are near to or hear activities which may lead to a crime to text an alert message to the Garda Central Response Unit who then alert the nearest unit to the reported area for whatever action is deemed necessary.

BANNA CEOIL. Good news coming our way from near neighbours Lispole is that moves are at an advanced stage to revive Banna Ceoil Lios Póil . The band was founded by local interested parents and music lovers in the early nineties and played at various events throughout the country until taking a break about 5 years ago. Almost every house in the Parish had some

family members connected to the band in that period and lets hope the previous success can be repeated again in the years ahead. Musical skills provides a wonderful opportunity for our youth to expand their talents and can be a great asset wherever one travels in life thereafter. Molaim an aiseirí iontach seo. TIDY TOWNS. After recently picking up 29 bags of dog poo discarded by some dog owners in the same spot along Bothar na bPiarsach I can only finish by using a quote from one of our long serving volunteers as follows It will be a great relief to us When you learn what to do Our message is real simple YOUR PET YOUR POO.

It’s All In The Mind: What’s So Great About Being ‘In The Moment’?! Orla Smyth

the threat, the system returns to homeostasis or rest and digest mode - this is the optimal state in which the body feels safe and calm and therefore allows us to be balanced, creative, productive, serene. In this state we can more easily resource our capacity for empathy, cooperation, kindness, generosity and compassion - all the qualities that help us to thrive as human beings and that are required to build a peaceful and thriving society. So far ,so good.

The most widely used definition of mindfulness is that of John Kabat Zinn : it is the awareness that arises through paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the moment, and non-judgmentally. He says it is both, the easiest thing in the world because we don't have to actually do anything and the hardest thing in the world because our attention is constantly pulled in so many directions , it is often nigh on impossible to focus and simply experience what is happening right now. But why does it matter, anyway? To answer this, we need to start with the nervous system. Human body’s are equipped with a very complex and sophisticated interconnected network of neurons and neurotransmitters that help us process information. It is responsible for carrying messages to and from different parts of the body. The cells receive sensory input from the environment and send motor commands to our muscles. These neural pathways are constantly receiving and relaying information to and from every part of the body, in constant communication with each other. The autonomic nervous system is designed to keep us safe so that the survival of the individual and hence our species is ensured. It is involuntary for the most part which means it works independently of our conscious mind and is always ‘on’, scanning the environment for danger and setting off the alarm system when it detects some threat. When the alarm is raised, the sympathetic division kicks in and prepares the body to respond to the threat in the most effective way. This is called the fight/ flight (or freeze) response. Once we have either escaped from or fought off

The fly in the ointment is that our nervous system has not evolved to keep pace with our changing world and circumstances. It helped our ancestors to survive wild animal attacks and hunt down woolly mammoths in the savannah, priming the body by flooding it with the stress hormones cortisol, adrenalin, increasing heart rate, shutting down the digestive system and more.These situations required huge energy output and physical focus. While the autonomic nervous system worked very effectively for primitive humans today it doesn’t serve us so well. We live in a noisier, more complex world and the challenges and stressors of modern life have changed. The nervous system is still reacting to every stressor we encounter as if it were a sabre tooth tiger. It overrides the thinking rational brain (the more evolved prefrontal cortex) and gears us up for great physical combat with pounding heart and muscle tension when the only stressor may be a perceived criticism from your boss. And,here's the problem: there is nowhere for all this energy to go : there is often no resolution. There is no channel for the fear to peak, resolve and return to a state of safety and confidence. Today, any stressor is more likely to be fuelled by our emotions and thoughts than any actual threat to our survival. We are far less likely than our ancestors to be in a life or death situation, but instead, we are constantly driven to attain the unattainable: to perform, to achieve, to be better, more accomplished, more prosperous, more successful, by some arbitrary criteria,to be happier and nothing less is good enough. The fear of failure or loss manifests itself in many ways. It can include everything from grief to feeling offended, disappointed, unfulfilled, embarrassed, heartbroken and everything in between. Our outdated nervous system picks up on all of these stressors or threats and sets off alarm bells, activating the sympathetic or fight or flight mode,sending the body into overdrive. We are most often not even aware of this communication loop playing out in the body. We simply carry on in automatic pilot : worrying, ruminating, regretting, carastrophying etc. The fear is suppressed rather than worked through or resolved and the body stays in a low

level state of alarm. Eventually, this translates into chronic stress, anxiety or a general sense of dissatisfaction. It can lead to ill health, depression, addiction, and other maladaptive coping mechanisms. This is not our fault, none of it is conscious, it’s just how we are programmed. This is where mindfulness comes in. The nervous system relates to our experience, not to cognitive ‘information’ - so you can read and reflect and talk about the theory and understand the processes for as long as you like but it is the actual experience that can impact change in the nervous system : mindfulness is about creating intentional experiences. Working through the body we learn to pay attention to what is happening right now. The mind can time travel to the future and the past and get lost in space but the body is always in the present moment, it cannot be anywhere but here and now. We begin to notice what is happening in the body, without criticising or judging. Kindness and gentleness is implicit in the practice of mindfulness. By attuning to the body/mind state we can interrupt the continuous loop of reactivity and signal to the nervous system that we are ok: that maybe the situation is uncomfortable but it is not unmanageable. Once the body returns to homeostasis or a state of calm, we generally cope better, often able to see things from a different perspective, something that is impossible when we are in survival mode, operating from a defensive position, programmed to protect ourselves, at all costs. It's Important to note the intention is not to let down our guard, to ignore stressors or signals of pain. We are not inviting suffering or hardship into our lives: it’s more a question of how we relate to the hardship once it’s already here. The intention is never to undermine pain and suffering in any way: it exists , it’s real and it hurts - a lot! The truth is life can be hard, unfathomable- it can be heartbreaking, sometimes unbearable but there is also joy and laughter and harmony and peace alongside the pain, once we are open to the possibility of it. Being mindful does not mean trying to avoid or change the inevitable vagaries or vicissitudes of life, but rather change how we relate to and experience it. For anyone who is interested in practising mindfulness or re-establishing your practice I will be offering an introductory course PAUSE BREATHE MOVE -an introduction to mindfulness through somatic awareness, beginning November 8th in the diseart. Críoch Sásúil ag Lucht Chiarraí

Tel: 066-7123454

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin Dá mbeadh rath i gcaitheamh an tséasúir ar na Ciarraígh mar a bhí sna cluichí deireanacha, bheadh nach mór dúbailt na bpointí ar fad a bhaineadar faighte acu. B'fhéidir nach mór an meid é sin do lucht tacaiochta a bhí ag súil le caighdeán imeartha – nó ar a laghad ar bith caighdeán torthaí – níos fearr ó lucht Thá Lí. Agus b'fhéidir fiú go raibh a chomhleithéid díomá ar chuid den lucht bainistiochta. Ach is dóichí go mórná san gur thuigeadar ón tús go mba thogra fadtréimhseach a bheadh sa chlub nua acu. Nach mór mí ó shin anois, bhuaileadar an bóthar ar an dturas fada go Tír Chonaill, áit a raibh an fhoireann baile i muinín bainisteora sealadaigh tar és imeacht Dave Rodgers. Is minic go n-imríonn fiorne gan bainisteoir faoi bhun a gcumas, ach ainneoin lucht na Ríochta dul chun cinn go luath sa dara leath, le cúl ó Ryan Kelliher, chothromaigh Billy Banda an scór roinnt nóimeadaí ina dhiaidh sin, agus chuir Noe Baba cúl na bua sa liontán roimh deireadh. Thaispeáin muintir Chiarraí cumas níos fearr i gcaitheamh an chluiche, ach gan a chúiteamh san a fháil. Sa bhaile an tseachtain dar gcionn, in aghaidh Loch Garman, dream a chuir sé iarracht san eangach ar a gcuairt deireanach roimhe sin go Páirc Chnocán an Iolair, chuir na cuairteoirí tús maith lena n-oíche sé nóiméid tar éis na feide. An fhad céanna i ndiaidh an bhriseadh, b'é Kelliher arís a bhí torthuil don bhfoireann baile, ach leath-bhealach tríd an dara leath sin, sciob Thomas Oluwa na trí pointí. Cluiche baile arís a bhí ag na Ciarraígh an tseachtain ina dhiaidh sin, muintir Phort Láirge chucu. B'iad a bhain na trí cluichí idir na foirne céanna go dtí sin, ach theip orthu cur leis an sraith sin torthaí. Leo Gaxha a chuir tús leis an scóráil deich nóiméad tar éis an tsosa, ag cur bac ar chic an bháireora Déisigh agus ag cur na liathróide san eangach lena cheann nuair a thit sí ar ais chuige. Saor-chic chonspóideach a thug an seans do Rónán Coughlan an scór a chothromú ceathrú uair a chloig níos déanai.

Mura raibh bua baile fós acu, ba dheas féin an comhscór sa chluiche deireanach i dTrá lí acu. Bhí dóchas ag lucht leanta Chiarraí gur mó a n-aird a bheadh ag a gcéilí comhraic sa Chóbh ar na cluichí cáiliúcháin a bheadh le n-imirt acu ná ar an gcluiche deireanach sraithe, ach chuaigh na Fánaithe chun cinn déanach sa chéad leath. Níor chaill na cuairteoirí misneach, mar sin féin, agus sa nóiméad deireanach den ghnáth-am d'eirigh le Kennedy Amechi smeach gairid caide a chur taobh thiar den chúlbáire. Comhscór eile le clabhsúr inmholta a chur lena gcéad séasúr i Sraith na hÉireann. Tá go leor foghlamtha ag na himreoirí, go háirithe na leads óga, agus ba chóir go mbeidis aghaidh a thabhairt ar an sraith an séasúr seo chugainn gan an oiread sceitimíní faitis a chaith a bheith orthu siar i mí Feabhra seo caite.

Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Congratulations to John and Dolly Chambers who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently. Camp Seniors and Camp Town Twinning joined them after the weekly seniors meal in Camp Old School on Thursday to wish them all the best. A sing song ensued and it was indeed a lovely occasion of reminiscing. John taught us all how to dance the Polka Set, thank you John. John and Dolly, may you both be blessed with good health and happiness for many many more years.

People shared the folklore and history, flora and fauna of the area along the way. The walk concluded with tea and coffee and a few songs at Brigids and a walk up to meet the sheep and see the Gallaun standing stone, which dates back 5,000 years. Special thanks to Sheila and to all who read and who attended. Thank you to the young people David, Mena and Justin. Our singer, Nora and Eilish who had the tea ready for us at the house. The day was a wonderful celebration to mark the month of creation in the parish. Go raibh mile maith agaibh go leir.

Between the two sides, some players have won six of the eight competitions that they competed in. A phenomenal year. APPRECIATION NIGHT: Cromane GAA Club will hold a club appreciation night for all of our trainers and those who help out every week at our lotto draws. In the Blood le

Pat Spillane foilsithe ag

Gill ‘Pat Spillane is one of the best-known sportspeople in Ireland. Selected for the GAA’s Team of the Millennium and winner of eight All-Ireland senior football medals, he is one of the greatest Gaelic footballers ever. Yet that isn’t half of the Spillane story. He has also been one of the most controversial GAA pundits of all time, driving the agenda on The Sunday Game and in The Sunday World for thirty years. His analysis and criticism have been headline news everywhere Gaelic football is discussed, and the terms he coined, such as ‘puke football’, have entered the Irish lexicon. Here, Pat reveals the sadness of his childhood when his father died; his dazzling football career and encounters with other immortals, from Mick O’Dwyer onwards; the reality of life as pundit under pressure from managers; and the huge stress of dealing with the machinery of government in the aftermath of his spell with CEDRA, the state advisory group on rural affairs.’ - Gill
