For women in midlife, sleep can become a very different creature. It is often not the falling asleep that causes the trouble, but the waking — too hot, too alert, too anxious, too thirsty, or suddenly wide awake at 3 a.m. Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can affect temperature regulation, mood, stress response and sleep quality.

Add caffeine, wine, late meals, busy lives or a stressful day into the mix and the night can quickly unravel.

This is where blood sugar balance matters. A body fuelled all day on coffee, toast, biscuits, skipped meals and sheer determination is unlikely to settle easily at bedtime. Protein at breakfast, a proper lunch, enough food earlier in the day and a balanced evening meal can all help the body feel steadier overnight. For some people, waking in the early hours may be linked to stress hormones, blood sugar dips or an overactive nervous system. Sometimes, what feels like a night-time problem begins with breakfast.

There is a particular kind of tiredness that comes from not sleeping well.

Not the satisfying tiredness of a long walk, a swim in the sea or a good day in the garden, but the frayed, foggy kind of lying awake at 3 a.m. wondering if you should change your life or tidy the hot press. A few years ago, I wrote about sleep when Covid-anxiety was keeping many people awake. These days the worries may have changed, but sleep remains elusive for many. Long summer evenings, late meals, phones, alcohol, stress, menopause and busy minds can all interfere with the transition from day to night. If sheep counting isn’t working maybe there’s something here for you.

Sleep is not optional. It is one of the body’s most important repair systems. While we sleep, we heal, regulate hormones, process emotions, support immunity, consolidate memory and reset the nervous system.

Most adults need around seven to nine hours, but quality matters too.

Being in bed is not the same as being deeply restored.

One of the simplest ways to support better sleep is through light. Our bodies are designed to follow the rhythm of day and night. Morning light tells the brain to wake up; evening dusk tells the body to wind down and prepare for repair. The trouble is that in an Irish summer, we are still enjoying the “grand stretch!” long after the nervous system may be asking for more darkness. We stay outside later, eat later, scroll later and then expect the brain to switch off on command.

Food can help with this too. Few foods have the reputation of curing insomnia quite like a glass of warm milk. There is even “night milk”, taken from cows milked after dark, said to contain higher levels of melatonin, the hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Milk may help because it contains tryptophan, an amino acid involved in serotonin and melatonin production, but I suspect there is comfort and memory involved too. Warm milk belongs to the land of sleeping babies, blankets, feeling safe and minded.

Melatonin is also present in small amounts in foods such as oats, barley, nuts, seeds, cherries and grapes. Tart cherries, particularly the Montmorency variety, have become popular in sleep discussions for this reason. These foods will not knock you out, but they can form part of a sleep-supportive pattern. Food works best when it supports the body’s rhythm rather than trying to override it.

Tryptophan, found in oats, pumpkin seeds, turkey, nuts, lentils and other legumes, works best when eaten with a little complex carbohydrate. This is where an old-fashioned bedtime snack can make sense, especially if you wake hungry or restless in the night. An oatcake with tahini or pumpkin seed butter, a small bowl of porridge, warm oat milk with cinnamon, or natural yoghurt with berries may be enough to signal steadiness to the body.

Magnesium deserves a mention too. Often called nature’s little relaxer, it is involved in nerve function, muscle relaxation and the calming side of the nervous system. You will find it in leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, almonds, wholegrains, beans, lentils and good dark chocolate. Calcium 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, summer is associated with the Fire element, the Heart, joy, connection and outward energy. It is the season of brightness, laughter, colour, gatherings and long evenings — all beautiful things, until the fire element is still blazing when we are trying to sleep. In TCM, a settled Heart and a calm Shen — often translated as the mind or spirit — are linked with peaceful sleep. Cooling, hydrating foods such as cucumber, lettuce, courgette, celery, berries, melon, mint and lemon balm can be lovely in the evening. Bitter leaves such as rocket, dandelion, chicory and radicchio, used in small amounts, also suit the season beautifully.

Herbs can be helpful too, not as a magic wand, but as part of a bedtime ritual. Chamomile, lemon balm, passionflower and valerian have long traditions of use for calming the system and supporting sleep. Lemon balm is especially lovely where sleep is disturbed by a busy mind or nervous tummy. Valerian may suit some people, though it is not for everyone and should be used with care if taking medication, sedatives or antidepressants.

A bath or footbath can also help to mark the end of the day. Add a few drops of lavender, neroli or ylang-ylang essential oil, dim the lights and let the body know that no more demands are coming. If the mind is racing, write tomorrow’s worries on paper before bed. They will still be there in the morning, but at least you will not need to take them under the duvet.

Finally, make the bedroom peaceful again: cool, dark, quiet and uncluttered. Phones, lights and bright screens can disrupt melatonin and keep the brain alert when it should be winding down. When we panic about not sleeping, we often try too hard. But sleep cannot be forced; it comes when the body feels safe, steady and in rhythm. So begin gently: morning light, nourishing meals, less caffeine, softer evenings, calming herbs, a darker room and a kinder pace. The Land of Nod may not be so far away, after all.

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest Ted Creedon Trampled By Horse Rider

it as belonging to the grampus branch of the whale species. Its capacious mouth is absolutely toothless.

For the little fishing boat, Maria, towing the monster from near the Skelligs to Dingle was not an easy task. Apart from the space in the nets, occupied by the monster, the remainder of the nets contained almost 3,500 mackerel from which it can be assumed that the fishing boat lost a great deal of profit.

-Kerry Reporter 23 August 1884 A man named Michael Hayes, from Kilflynn, who was walking home after the races in Listowel on Wednesday evening, was struck by a horse rider and died of his Injuries in the Infirmary the following day .

The victim, who was aged 70, suffered a fractured thigh and his other injuries were also severe.

It is reported that the person who rode over the victim did so with something akin to premeditation. Afterwards, the rider did not show any regret for his brutality. The police are on the track of the person who caused this tragedy.

(Will leave it to our readers to determine what species of whale this was; Orca, Risso’s Dolphin, Pilot whale, Melon headed whale, etc, etc. Maybe Kevin Flannery can enlighten us. What happened to the carcase? Was it sold? Was there oil in it? Was there Ambergris in it?)

Wife Murderer

The servant went beyond her depth and needed assistance. Her companion went to her aid but both of them drowned in about twelve feet of water.

The young lady on the strand was a witness to the tragedy but was unable to render any assistance.

-Ulster Echo 09 July 1885 Bart Nolan, an ex-convict, who went on the run after murdering his wife at Scroghan, County Kerry, yesterday, surrendered himself last night to Father Casey at Abbeyfeale. The priest immediately sent for the police and Nolan was taken into custody.

Upon being arrested Nolan exclaimed “Father Casey – do you think I will be hanged?”. The accused had been hiding all day in a wood but a search by the local people had failed to find him.

(Can’t find any place named Scroghan - possibly Scrahan in the civil parish of Duagh?)

Policeman Drowned -Dublin Daily Examiner 13 August 1904 Constable Farrell, of the Killarney District was drowned in the River Laune, near Killorglin, yesterday morning. The deceased had been on duty at Puck Fair on Tuesday and yesterday he went alone for a bathe in the Laune at about ten o’clock. His body was later discovered a short distance from where his clothes were found. Constable Farrell was known to be an excellent swimmer, and his death is attributed to heart failure. He was a native of Wexford.

Brosna accident -Cork Weekly Examiner 12 November 1904 On Friday night while a horse and car, laden with passengers, was proceeding along the public road, near Brosna, it suddenly came in contact with an obstruction on the road and was instantly overturned.

The driver and passengers were hurled about in all directions but, luckily, they escaped serious injury. Part of the car and harness were broken. (So, what was the obstruction on the road. Being ‘thrown about’ onto a hard road, on a dark November night, without serious injury seems miraculous.)

Butter Money Robbed -Kerry Evening Post 18 August 1886 Several Moonlighters carried out a robbery in the home of a farmer, named Curran, in the Rathmore area. It appears the farmer had gone to Cork, to the butter merchant Dominick Cronin, to collect his payment for this year’s supply of butter to the Cork market.

He returned to Kerry the following night and was hardly home when the Moonlighters entered and demanded all the money in the house. The three robbers were masked, and Curran gave one of them a cheque and £3 in bank notes. As the criminals were leaving a female house servant rushed at the man with the cash and snatched it from him. The men made their escape.

Dingle Sea Monster -Cork Examiner 30 May 1904 (Article by unnamed reporter) In giving 17 feet as the probable length of the huge sea monster captured when it got tangled in the nets of James Long’s boat Maria, on Thursday morning, I find the length considerably underestimated.

It is fully 27 feet in length, and its greatest circumference is 10 feet.

Different locals disagree as to the specific species to which it belongs. Most of these opinions are pure conjecture, but one reliable authority classifies 8 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Tragic Drowning In Kenmare.

-Liverpool Mercury 06 August 1885 Two young ladies plus a child and a domestic servant, living near Kenmare, decided to go bathing in the bay when the tide was ebbing. One of the young ladies and the domestic servant, who was also a nurse, entered the water. The other young lady remained with the child on the strand.

Free Emigration to Queensland -Kerry People 27 April 1907 The Queensland Government desires to attract settlers and are prepared to grant Free Passage to Experienced Farmhands, to be Approved by the Agent-General, and to guarantee them work for at least twelve months at the rate of wages current in the Colony.

Applicants must be between 17 and 40 years of age, healthy and of good character. The Government Department will receive them on arrival at Brisbane and will see them placed on the farms to which they will be allotted.

I have no idea if this will be a success or not for those availing of this offer. Any person booking with me will go entirely on their own initiative and responsibility and if it isn’t a success they can’t blame me afterwards.

Eric Pich, 8th Dan Shihan, 72, who has died, used to come regularly to Dingle twice a year from 1991 to 2003 to conduct seminars and grading for both adults and children. He awarded grades to hundreds of karate students of Corca Dhuibhne, including 10 black belts over this period and will be remembered both for his technical expertise in the dojo and fun-loving personality in the bars, which always included his athletic rendition of the Cossack dance.

Slow-Cooked Fish With Citrus & Herbs Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

This dish is a wonderful example of how a few simple ingredients, treated with care, can create something truly special. Here, local cod is gently baked with leeks, citrus, garlic, and herbs, allowing everything to slowly mingle in the oven.

The leeks are the backbone of the recipe, bringing a soft sweetness that balances the brightness of lemon and mandarin. A touch of saffron adds warmth and a subtle richness, lifting the flavours without overpowering the fish.

Slow cooking keeps the cod moist and tender, while the citrus rounds and herbs infuse each bite with freshness. The result is light yet deeply satisfying, perfect served with warm bread, couscous, or simply on its own with a green salad.

It’s a dish that feels both comforting and elegant, letting local fish and vegetables shine while drawing inspiration from the sun-soaked flavours of the Middle East.

Ingredients pinch of saffron threads 2 leeks, cut in half lengthways and cleaned extra virgin oil 5-6 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 lemon very thinly sliced into rounds, seeds picked out 1 mandarin orange, very thinly sliced, seeds picked out 800g cod, skin removed

good handful of dill and tarragon, chopped salt and pepper Method Heat the oven to 160ºC Crush the saffron threads into a fine powder in a mortar and pestle. Add the saffron to a small bowl of warm water about 50ml) and set aside.

Add some oil to a pan over low to medium heat, add the leeks and allow them to soften. Take your time with this, after about 5-8 minutes add the garlic and citrus slices, season well. Allow this to cook for another few minutes.

Spread this about half of this mixture on a shallow oven tray. Season the fish well and place the fish over the leeks, pour the saffron water over the fish, then top with the remaining leek mixture. Scatter the herbs over and pour in some oil. Place this in the oven.

Bake this for about 20-25 minutes. Bake until the fish is opaque and easily flakes off with a fork around the thickest part. Spoon all the leeks, citrus and fat over, taste and season with more salt if needed, and serve.

Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor CAMP COMMUNITY COUNCIL CELEBRATION Thomas Ashe, our friendly and much loved and highly regarded publican passed away peacefully on December 24th. 2025. Camp Community Council and Camp Town Twinning are inviting everyone who knew Thomas to come and celebrate his life on Friday, 5th July in Camp Community Centre. There will be a barbeque and music and song and reminiscence of Thomas. Thomas’s signature attire was his lovely colourful waistcoats. You are asked to wear a waistcoat in memory of Thomas on the night. Everyone is welcome.

CAMP CHURCH BICENTENARY “200 bliain ar an bhfód” This year, St. Mary's Church celebrates the bicentenary of its opening. To mark this special milestone, Bishop Ray Brown will celebrate Mass in St. Mary's Church on Friday, 24 July, at 7:00 p.m.

A commemorative booklet is currently being compiled to mark the occasion.

It includes the history of St. Mary's over the past 200 years, a record of religious men and women from the area who have ministered both at home and overseas, memorabilia, old prayers, and other historical material.

Gerardine had reached the peak of her profession, serving as an eminent consultant who won many awards. In a lovely tribute to his kind and caring wife, Michael likened his loss to the beautiful lyrics of Sean Keane's song, noting that "One More Hour With You" said it all.

Reflecting Gerardine's deep love for the Irish language, he ended his poignant eulogy with: "Tá mo chroí briste. Love you lots. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

The news of the death of Gerardine SayersReidy was received with great sadness.

Castlegregory Notes What a great start to our Country Market - thank you to everyone who popped in to see us in our new home. The Outdoor Market which used to be down by Castlegregory Secondary school has now moved to the Community hall in the West end of the village (the hall next to Ned Natterjack's bar). Our season will continue every Sunday throughout the Summer until Sunday August 23rd....We hope you will pop in and continue to support us in our new home.

Local Link Services this summer: As you know, the introduction of Local Link bus services to Corca Dhuibhne and further Kerry regions (with over 90 towns and villages throughout the county), has made a huge contribution to local rural life over the last few years. The connections between places are well thought out, linking up with other national transport services such as Bus Éireann and Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail).

into my shed from 10 to 1.00. The world is awake by then, so this work is often interrupted by Zooms, emailsm etc, but it's still quality writing time. If I'm really under pressure to deliver, I'll go away somewhere for 24 hours and write like a mad yoke. There's no deadline that can't be met if the panic levels are high enough. For the TV work, I go to London for the writer's rooms.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into the film industry?

It's a job, a craft, not your identity or self-worth. You've got to be able to take a critical mauling, then get back into that shed and write again because you're compelled to tell stories. And you enjoy it.

Favourite film quote/scene THE ELEPHANT MAN was a film that rent me wide open as a child. I didn't understand how much a film could move you until I saw it. I remember the scene when he finally lies down. Weirdly, I often think of him when I lie down to go to sleep. The simple things that are denied to so many.

After that, I'm a frazzled mother and daughter who's always chasing her tail on the Dingle Peninsula.

How did you get into the film industry?

I sent an odd little first novel to Kirsten Sheridan, and she was sound enough to take me under her wing. She introduced me to Screen Ireland, who then funded the development of my first film, RUN & JUMP, some of which was shot here on the Peninsula.

What inspired you to want to work in film? (film, TV programme, actor, etc.) And what inspires/motivates you from day to day in your work?

I like getting the characters out of my head and onto the page. It'd be very crowded in there otherwise What was your first job in film and what have you worked on since?

RUN & JUMP was my first job. Since then, I've worked on more films, TAKE ME SWIMMING, JOYRIDE, SUNLIGHT, VAN WIFE and some TV work, BAD SISTERS, TRESPASSES. What are you working on at the moment? Upcoming projects?

At the moment, I'm working on various feature films for directors Peter Cuttaneo (THE FULL MONTY), Antonio Lukich (LUXEMBOURG, LUXEMBOURG), Claire Dix (SUNLIGHT), Dawn Shadforth (TRESPASSES) and Kathyrn Ferguson (NOTHING COMPARES). I'm also working on some TV shows, including adaptations of two amazing Irish writers, Louise Kennedy and Una Mannion, who, incidentally, are also great friends.

What job(s) are you most proud of?

Possibly SUNLIGHT because we created that with nothing but love, and a scant 400,000, which is a small miracle.

What’s your process? How do you get into a role/project and how do you work?

I get up at 5.30, sink into the kitchen couch with the dogs, drink an entire pot of tea, and do my most creative heavy-lifting until 7.30. These are the magic hours. Then I get the kids up and out, the dogs walked and go West Kerry Live 17

This has not been an easy decision, and it is with great warmth and gratitude that I reflect on the trust you have placed in me over the years here in Dingle. It has been a genuine privilege to provide a dental practice service for the community of Dingle and West Kerry.

Eask Tower LOP John O'Connor

Visitors to Eask Tower on Carhoo Hill overlooking Dingle, presumably see it as a high and curious place from which to photograph the spectacular 360-degree scenery offered there. Viewed from the town at sea level, the tower (built in 1847) invites question and comment as to its origin but the small structure, sticking out like a pimple and of more recent origin, on the west side of the tower is never mentioned. It may be that the present young generation of local people are not aware of what went on ‘up there’ – do they know about WW2 (they might even ask, what is WW2?) and the Emergency? I mean no disrespect to ‘this generation’, the march of time and its changes throw up differing sets of concerns and realities as the old gives’ way to the new. Indeed, I have cousins that are unaware of the part one of their ancestors, (my father, Michael), played in what went on in that small, now graffiti-smeared, hut beside the tall ‘stone’ structure that looks down on what was once a living thing beside it. The hut on Carhoo was designated LOP (look out post) Eask Head number 36 - the foundation for which was laid on Feb. 12, 1940.

This hut is one of 83 look-out posts which were constructed in strategic places around Ireland at the time of the Emergency during the second world war (WW2 – 1939-1945). Men lived in the small space of these constructs for the duration of the war keeping watch on the coast lest its neutrality be compromised by belligerents. The valuable job they undertook was known as the Coast Watching Service. Information about the service is available on the internet - Military Archives Lookout Post Logbooks - will furnish facts and figures about the service including the log books kept by the LOP coast watchers. Here I want to dwell on that small space where two men (alternating) lived for five years occupying an area 11 feet x 7 feet (approx.) which is equal to the size of a modern domestic bathroom. The LOP buildings were standard-issue constructs made from pre-cast concrete blocks which were transported to the hill tops by donkey and cart and assembled in situ using cement and local sand. If weather permitted, the building was put together in about a week. In the early days of the war, before the solid building was perfected, the coast watching was done from tents. The post was manned at all times, 24/7, by two men called Coastwatchers’ - who had Army ranks (private, corporal etc.) and were overseen by an NCO – and referred to in the log book notations as Volunteers. A log book page has four columns for entries: Serial No. (of notation); EVENTS, MESSAGES, INCIDENTS; ACTION TAKEN; REMARKS. The shifts were normally eight hours with one man outside at all times; a volunteer would have at least one shift in a 24-hour period.

Image by J ‘OConnor The one cot-bed provided was shared and used intermittently by the volunteer inside who manned the telephone and made logbook notations, and by visiting officers who might stay overnight. Regular inspections (by the NCO) were carried out in daytime but also took place between three and four o’clock in the morning. Dress and deportment of volunteers was taken seriously - one log book entry has a note about a volunteer’s ‘dirty boots and leggings’; another at a change of watch reads: ‘all shirts clean.’ Short study periods, when all volunteers were assembled, were held at the post – these pertained to the use of equipment like flags and the morse signal lamp. Volunteers in groups of four also attended training courses in Collins’ Barracks, Cork. Members of the local Garda station phoned and visited the hill on a regular basis. The ‘watchers’ (on Eask) came from the Dingle area; some lived close-by – my father cycled threeand-a-half-miles (6km approx.) to each shift – no matter the weather. A week’s (7 days) payment of one pound fourteen and eight (1 pound, 14 shillings and 8 pence) which included a rations allowance was issued to each volunteer.

The building was equipped with rudimentary furniture; I remember a rusted steel-framed wire cot when I climbed the hill in my early teens; rotted remnants of the wooden windows were evident and diminishing with each visit. The fireplace (still intact with its projecting chimney) no doubt burned wood and turf and offered some comfort – to sneak a

uninterrupted 180-degree view from Inch to the Blasket Islands. At dark of night, lights from vessels on the water were noted and their position and direction relative to the post entered. During daytime observations the note ‘Nat unk’ is often found, meaning, of course, nationality unknown.’ ‘HO watch’ and ‘TO watch’ are the most common entries in the books - the hand-over and take-over of the watches. Personnel on neighbouring LOPs on the peninsula phoned to share observations and seek confirmations when the need arose. All communications were relayed to a central authority, in the Eask case, Ballymullen Barracks, Tralee and Southern Command, Cork. The watchers knew the names of the local fishing boats and recognised them from the hill top; one log book entry has a local merchant phoning the hill late evening and inquiring if such a fishing vessel was on its way home; this was undoubtedly outside the remit of the post but was accepted as a perk (no doubt) of having such a valuable resource at one’s doorstep. County Kerry had 12 look out posts; 5 were in the Dingle Peninsula.

OPW Series. hand-warm - from the harshness of winter in the bleak exposure 600ft (180 metres) above sea level – the hut being the only shelter from hail, frost or storm. The night shift in winter, from midnight to 8 am, was surely a dreaded thing. A clock, telephone and binoculars were standard and the means by which the volunteers did their work; all observations and occurrences were entered in a dedicated log book. The correct time was checked daily by phoning Dingle Post Office; Ballymullen Barracks made telephone checks during the night watch. The first entry on the Eask logbook is dated Feb. 5, 1940. The movement of ships in Dingle Bay and low-flying aircraft, the raison d’etre of the post, was marked to the minute along with their geographic locations. The hut location provided for an

The stone tower on the hill is now braced with metal bands for fear of collapse. The LOP hut is in bad repair: the concrete roof is propped and strands of wire help keep some of the walls together. This part of our local history, which is hidden from many visitors to the town has alas, been allowed to quietly begin its fade into obscurity and with it the memory of the men who trekked to that lofty place to maintain the watch.

Superstitions Of The Sea

Up Here I Can See It All

There are many mysteries and superstitions of the seas and coastal areas along the North Atlantic – Ireland is no exception. There is also an associated vocabulary of fishermen, who for superstitious reasons cannot mention certain individuals or animals while at sea. Instead, they use alternative words which were widely understood within the fishing community. The use of special terms while at sea and the avoidance of certain words, must be seen as symbolic acknowledgement of the sea as another domain, fundamentally different from the land and its activities.

The examples used below were all collected by the Irish Folklore Commission over the past 80 years and more details can be found in Bairbre Ní Fhloinn’s wonderful book – ‘Cold Iron’, published by Comhairle Bhéaloideas Éireann, 2018.

Seosamh Ó Dalaigh, a local collector with the Commission, told of a belief from Dún Chaoin, that the fox or anything of a red colour should not be mentioned out at sea in a boat or to fishermen on their way to work.

Mischievous people would annoy fishermen on their way to sea, by calling out the curse ‘Madra ar do dhuán’ – ‘A fox upon your hook’. So firm was the prohibition against using the word rua, red or russet at sea that a man called Pádraig Ó Guithin from the Great Blasket, known as Pádraig Rua was referred to at sea as’ Peadaí deaghdhathach’ – ‘brilliant coloured Paddy’.

In Brandon, if fishermen met a pig on the road or saw one in a nearby field, they would turn home and avoid going to sea for that day. In other places fishermen would never mention the pig while baiting their hooks as it was sure to bring ill fortune. While at sea, pigs were referred to ‘as the fellow with the curly tail’. Our own Kevin Flannery of Dingle, tells a story of an apprentice fisherman who was a cook on a fishing boat working out of Dingle, who brought bacon on board – it was quickly thrown overboard as the meat of the pig was also bad luck.

Similarly, the fox was an object of name avoidance among fishermen.

The fox can be referred to as ‘the bushy tailed fellow’ or in Galway there is a phrase for the fox as ‘fear na gcluasa biorach’ - ‘the fellow with the pointed ears’. Mossy Moore, a fisherman from Dingle, once saw a fox in the fields as they left the harbour, and promptly turned home such was the superstitious fear.

The hare was another animal never mentioned while fishing. Fishermen on the west coast referred to the hare as ‘fear an eireabaill bháin’ – ‘the fellow with the white tail.’ The term ‘Cold Iron’ was a common phrase used by fishermen at sea to refer to the animals mentioned above. In the way that land based folk use the term ‘touch wood’, those at sea may have used ‘Cold Iron’ in a similar way, when discussing the taboo subjects.

Finally, and bizarrely in parts of Kerry, particularly Ballinskelligs and Dingle, ‘salmon’ was a word not mentioned on white fish boats. The salmon was referred to as ‘Fish’ - a generic rather than descriptive term. They also referred to them as ‘the boys’ or ‘gentlemen.’

Ukrainian learners at Dingle FET Centre achieve QQI Major Healthcare Awards Ukrainian learners in Dingle are continuing to make significant strides in their education, with some progressing onto our Level 5 Healthcare Support programme. This achievement reflects not only their academic commitment but also their determination to contribute meaningfully to their new community.

For these learners, the journey began with English language classes, where they built the communication and confidence needed to advance further in their studies. Supported by dedicated tutors, they developed strong foundational skills that has allowed them transition successfully into vocational training.

Progressing to a Level 5 Healthcare Support course marks an important milestone. These programmes provide learners with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to work in healthcare settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, and community care services.

With a growing demand for healthcare workers, Ukrainian learners are stepping into a sector where their empathy, resilience, and multicultural perspective are highly valued.

Their success also highlights the positive impact of inclusive education pathways. By accessing further education and training opportunities, Ukrainian learners are building meaningful careers, increasing their independence, and strengthening their role within the local community.

As they move forward, their achievements stand as an inspiring example of perseverance, adaptability, and hope for the future.
