Dingle Summer Music Festival Returns for Bank Holiday Weekend

Music will fill venues across the Dingle Peninsula from Thursday 28 May to Monday 1 June as Féile Cheoil an tSamhraidh (Dingle Summer Music Festival) returns for its 2026 programme.

The five-day festival brings together classical music, choir performances, jazz, chamber music and contemporary works,with concerts taking place in churches, community spaces and historic venues throughout West Kerry.

This year’s programme includes performances from visiting international musicians alongside well-known Irishensembles and local choirs. A mixture of ticketed concerts and free afternoon events is planned across the bank holiday weekend.

Among the performances scheduled are:

• The Irish Guitar Quartet

• Pianist Andreas Ioannides performing works by Chopin at An Díseart Fresco Room

• Afternoon performances by The Dingle Jazz Band

• Concerts from Dingle New Music Choir and Orchestra, Kerry Choral Union, Barony Choir and Cór Seoda Tíre

• A closing performance from the Louth Chamber Orchestra at the Dingle Skellig Hotel on Monday 1 June, featuring music ranging from Baroque composers to film scores

Festival Director Gábor Péli said the aim of the festival is to make highquality live music accessible in a relaxed setting across the peninsula.

“People can come for a single concert or spend the weekend moving between events and venues around Dingle. We’revery lucky to have musicians of this standard performing here, and we’re especially pleased to continue including free and donation-based performances as part of the programme.”

Events will take place in venues including An Díseart, St. Mary’s Church Dingle, St. James’ Church Dingle, the Dingle Skellig Hotel, Sacred Heart University Dingle Campus, St. Vincent’s Church in Ballyferriter and Sáipéal na Carraige in Baile na nGall.

Several events are already close to capacity.

Fermented and Fabulous: Rediscovering the Magic of Living Foods

My own adventures in fermentation began with kombucha — or more precisely, with a SCOBY. This strange, jelly-like culture sits in sweetened tea and slowly transforms it into the tangy, lightly fizzy drink many of us now know as kombucha. SCOBY is an acronym for Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast, which sounds more like something from a school science lab than a kitchen counter. But that is exactly what it is: a living community of microbes working together to turn ordinary tea into something sharp, sparkling and full of the good stuff. If turning water into wine at Cana impressed you, the humble SCOBY might at least deserve a raised eyebrow. But kombucha is only one small part of a much older story. Humans have been fermenting food for thousands of years — long before fridges, freezers or endless supermarket shelves. Fermentation was one of our great survival skills. It preserved the harvest, stretched food through leaner months, transformed flavour and made many foods more nourishing and digestible. Across the world, nearly every culture has its own fermented foods. Korea has kimchi, made from cabbage, radish, chilli, garlic and time. Japan has miso, tamari, natto and koji. Germany and Eastern Europe have sauerkraut. India has dosa and idli batter, fermented until light and bubbly. Ethiopia has injera, a flatbread made from fermented teff flour. The Middle East has yoghurt, labneh and pickled vegetables. Mexico and Central America have drinks such as tepache and pulque. Here in Ireland, our fermented traditions are woven through buttermilk, cheese, butter, beer, sourdough, pickles and cured foods.

Fermentation was never just a health trend. At its simplest, fermentation happens when microorganisms — bacteria, yeasts or moulds — transform sugars and starches in food. In the process, they create acids, gases, alcohols and other compounds that change taste, texture and shelf life. Cabbage becomes sauerkraut. Milk becomes yoghurt or kefir. Flour and water become sourdough. Soybeans become miso or tempeh. Tea becomes kombucha. Grapes become wine. Barley becomes beer. Ordinary ingredients are changed by invisible life.

Fermentation also asks something of us that modern food rarely does: a little patience. You salt the cabbage, pack it into a jar, press it down under its own brine, and then leave time and microbes to do their work. Over the next few days, the natural bacteria begin to transform the sugars in the cabbage, creating the tangy acidity that preserves it and gives sauerkraut its distinctive flavour. It is a simple process, but a remarkable one — a humble cabbage becoming something brighter, sharper and far more interesting.

This is where old traditions meet modern science. We now know that these foods can support the gut microbiome — that vast community of microorganisms living mainly in our digestive tract. These microbes play a role in digestion, immune function, inflammation, nutrient production and even communication between the gut and brain. Adding fermented foods intentionally and regularly is one simple way to bring more microbial diversity, acidity, flavour and digestive support into the diet. Some bring live microbes, especially when they are raw or unpasteurised, while others may still provide beneficial compounds created during fermentation. This process can change the food itself, often improving flavour, digestibility and nutrient availability. Yoghurt, for example, is often bet-

ter tolerated than milk because bacteria help break down some lactose. Traditionally fermented sourdough can alter the structure of bread and may make it easier for some people to digest, while fermented soy foods such as miso and tempeh can improve flavour and support the availability of beneficial plant nutrients.

Traditional food cultures understood this long before we had words like “microbiome”. Fermented foods were rarely eaten in huge portions. They appeared as condiments, sides, starters and staples — sauerkraut with meat, miso in broth, yoghurt with grains, pickles with rich meals, buttermilk in bread. They brought acidity, brightness and balance. They helped heavier foods feel lighter and added complexity to simple meals. This is where fermented foods belong in our own kitchens too — not as another wellness trend, but as small, useful, delicious habits that fit naturally into the meals we already eat. A spoonful of sauerkraut can sit happily beside eggs or cheese, live yoghurt is lovely with stewed apple, miso can be stirred into soup after cooking, kefir can be blended with berries, and pickled onions can brighten up leftovers. Sourdough with lunch or a glass of kombucha in place of a fizzy drink are simple additions and swaps rather than grand gestures; the kind of small kitchen nudges that, over time, can make everyday food more interesting and more supportive. They also remind us that food is not inert. It is not just calories, grams and labels. Food is alive with relationships — between soil, plant, animal, microbe, cook and eater. The cabbage in the jar is connected to the soil it grew in, the salt that draws out its juices, the bacteria that transform it, and finally to the person who eats it.

Of course, a little common sense is needed. If you ferment at home, use clean jars, clean hands, good recipes and the right salt ratios. Keep vegetables submerged under their brine. Do not eat anything that smells rotten rather than pleasantly sour, or anything with suspicious mould. People who are pregnant, immunocompromised, very frail or medically vulnerable may need individual advice around unpasteurised fermented foods. For most of us, fermented foods are a lovely way to expand the life and flavour of our meals. Start small. Your gut does not need kefir, kimchi, kombucha and sauerkraut all on the same heroic Monday morning. Begin with a teaspoon or two alongside food and build slowly. You do not have to make everything yourself either. Buy a good live yoghurt. Try a jar of raw sauerkraut from the fridge section. Add miso to your shopping basket. Support local cheesemakers and bakers. Then, when curiosity grabs you, make something simple: pickled onions, basic sauerkraut, a sourdough starter, or perhaps your own kombucha.

Fermentation is ancient, practical, scientific and a little bit magical. It belongs to home cooks and elders, monks and farmers, brewers and bakers, scientists and slightly overexcited kombucha drinkers like myself. In a world that often feels overly processed, overly sanitised and far too fast, fermentation brings us back to patience, participation and trust. It reminds us that nourishment is not only something we consume. Sometimes, it is something we tend.

Threatened To Kill Wife

-Kerry Evening Post 18 September 1901

At Killarney Petty Sessions recently a Mr. McGillycuddy was charged on the information of his wife, with assault and threatening to take her life. Mr. Moriarty, who represented the complainant, said his client did not now wish to proceed with the case against her husband and asked the bench to dismiss it. The chairman said they would hear the case. The information about Mrs. McGillycuddy was read, which was to the effect that her husband came home under the influence of alcohol and used violent and insulting language in their home. He fired a shot from a gun to frighten her and on several occasions, he threatened to take her life. Because it was a family dispute Mr. McGillycuddy was offered bail, but he refused point blank to accept it. The case was adjourned for a week to enable the defendant to summon witnesses. He was admitted to bail for a week.

(Strange. A week to summon witnesses. Witnesses to what, his character?)

Serious Fire In Dingle

-Kerry Evening Post 04 September 1901

On Wednesday Evening while some men, employed by Mr. Latchford, were making hay into ricks, a fire, which threatened to be of terrible proportions at first, occurred on the Latchford property at Milltown, Dingle. The outbreak started in one of the ricks that the men were finishing and, in a few minutes a large quantity of hay was destroyed.

In the meantime, the fire was rapidly extending itself towards the other ricks of hay that were stored up in the yard. The men on the farm and those working in the fields, concentrated their efforts and were successful in confining the fire to that part of the yard where the fire originated and thus saved the surrounding buildings. All the available constabulary, under the command of Head Constable Nagle, were promptly on the scene and rendered all possible assistance.

(No mention of the coastguards who usually assisted when there was a fire in the town).

Old Man Hit By Train

-Kerry News 06 July 1903

An accident occurred on Friday on the railway line at Farranfore which, it is feared, will prove fatal. An old man named Darby Connor, aged about eighty years, residing at a place known as Moriarty’s Cross, about two miles from Farranfore station, when the 1.55pm train arrived, the engine of which struck him and knocked him down. The train, which was travelling very slowly at the time, was immediately brought to a standstill. The unfortunate old man must have just got on the level crossing when the train was quite close to him. Dr. Brosnan, from Killarney, who just arrived on the scene, examined the injured man, and found that his ribs, on both sides of his body, were crushed and he also had a large wound on his scalp. He believed the poor man was in a dying condition. It was learned that he was in receipt of outdoor relief and had come to Farranfore to get his weekly allowance from the Relieving Officer. (Can’t figure out how he was hit by the train and ribs crushed on both sides.)

Tramp Stole Gun

-Kerry Reporter 14 Nov 1914

On Sunday afternoon a man of the tramp class named Lawson was arrested in Tralee by Sergeant Noone, Ardfert, and was charged with the larceny of a single barreled gun. He was also charged with the theft of a pair of boots, two pairs of stockings and a flitch of bacon (Half a pig). The stolen items were the property of a farmer named McCarthy.

Mr. Macarthy lives in the district of Ardfert, and it seems that Lawson got lodgings in his house on Thursday night. In the early hours of Friday morning Lawson decamped with the gun and the other articles men -

tioned. On Sergeant Noone being informed of the theft he proceeded to Tralee, where he arrested Lawson who was held in custody until the next Abbeydorney Petty Sessions.

When he was arrested the thief had none of the stolen property on him. However, at some time during the day the gun was discovered in a furze bush at Cahirslee. The pair of boots were found in a pawn shop in Tralee. The flitch of bacon was traced to a house in Boherbee and was taken away by police. Much credit is due to them for the promptness with which they recovered the stolen articles.

Drunken Pig

In our last report of the Tralee Petty Sessions, Mr. James Walsh, of Ballymacogue, was fined for drunkenness. This was a serious error, as Mr. Walsh was merely fined for allowing one of his pigs to wander on the public road. The Evening Star deeply regrets the annoyance and the distress that our incorrect report must have caused Mr. Walsh.

Lucky Escape From Drowning

-Kerry Reporter 28 March 1903

Since the afternoon of Sunday last rain has continued incessantly in the district of Killorglin, making outdoor work impossible. Fields are being flooded in areas where flooding was not seen for over thirty years. Each side of the river Maine is one sheet of water on a level with the tops of the riverbanks and spreading for miles along the low-lying lands.

On Monday last a young man named Clifford was on his way to the creamery at Firies with a horse, cart and a tankard of milk, at about ten o’clock in the morning. He was forced to pass along a portion of the road at Ballfinane, which was partially submerged by the river Maine. Being well acquainted with the road, he seems to have thought that it was still fordable.

However, gradually the horse got out of its depth, attempted to swim but overturned the cart into a dyke on one side of the road. Clifford took hold of the uppermost wheel to keep his head above water. Meanwhile, the horse, in some way, managed to free itself from the cart and it swam to the land.

Clifford remained in this position for four hours while attempts to reach him by some locals failed.

About 2 o’clock four young men from the area lashed themselves together with ropes, and by the most strenuous effort managed to reach Clifford and brought him, in an exhausted and frozen condition, to a place of safety.

Chicken Shawarma and Sumac Yogurt

Dive into the vibrant flavours of the Middle East with Chicken Shawarma. The succulent slices of marinated chicken marinated in a blend of spices, lemon and garlic will result in a mouth-watering dish that you can use time and time again, weather it is for a mid-week meal or a family barbeque. For the yogurt I have added some sumac to the yogurt, it adds a citrus freshness to the dish. If you can find sumac continue with the rest of the ingredients it still will add to the dish.

Ingredients

2 lemons, juiced

4 cloves garlic, peeled, smashed and minced

2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

2 tsp. ground cumin

2 tsp. paprika

½ tsp. turmeric

½ tsp. cinnamon pinch of chilli flakes, to taste olive oil

salt and pepper

700g chicken thighs, skin and bone removed

1 red onion, thinly sliced bunch of flat leaf parsley, chopped For the yogurt

200g natural yogurt

2 cloves garlic, crushed

1 tsp. sumac

Small bunch of mint leaves, finely chopped

Method

In a large bowl add the lemon juice, garlic, cumin, paprika, turmeric and chilli flakes.

Mix in the oil, and a little salt and pepper. Mix this all well and add the chicken, coat the chicken well and leave this to marinade overnight.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC

Drizzle a tray with oil, add the red onion to the marinated chicken. Mix this well. Spread this over the tray and pop in the oven. Cook this for about 25-30 minutes. Check that the chicken is cooked, remove from the oven and rest for about 3 minutes, slice it and add the parsley.

You can get ready the yogurt sauce while the chicken is cooking. Mix the all the ingredients for the sauce together. Serve this with some flatbread and salad.

A Journey of Love, Caregiving and Hope

Originally from Lixnaw in North Kerry, with deep family roots in Baile Dháith and a lifelong love for the culture and people of Corca Dhuibhne, Malcolm Griffin has a strong connection to West Kerry. Childhood memories of visiting his grandfather Jack Griffin in Feothanach remain vivid — sitting in An Cúinne pub, listening to the poetry of the Irish language as he chatted with old friends over a glass of Guinness.

That love for the land eventually led Him and his husband Brian to move to Corca Dhuibhne 11 years ago. They spent many happy years together here alongside their beloved dog Ríonach before her passing, shortly before Brian’s dementia began to progress.

Brian was once an exceptionally active man — a passionate mountain climber, walker and golfer who conquered peaks such as Mont Blanc, Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp. He also became a member of Ceann Sibéal Golf Club before dementia gradually affected his confidence and independence.

Over the past six years, drawing on his background in Traditional Chinese Medicine, martial arts and energy-based therapies, Malcolm has dedicated himself to researching alternative approaches to help manage

Brian’s condition. This journey has now led them to an innovative treatment programme in Germany involving exosome stem cells, medical laser therapy and IV nutraceuticals — therapies showing encouraging results for neurodegenerative illnesses such as dementia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

The funds raised will help finance Brian to travel to Germany and be a pioneer of sorts for everyone in Ireland affected by dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's etc.

The first stage will see Malcolm cycle from Dingle to Limerick on June 20th, stopping in towns along the route to raise awareness and collect donations. He hopes that local businesses and pubs throughout West Kerry and Dingle will support the campaign through collection points.

But this journey is about more than one person’s treatment.

The second stage of the campaign is to highlight the enormous pressures facing Ireland’s caregivers. Across the country, thousands of carers sacrifice careers, finances, mental health and personal freedom to care for loved ones, often with little support. Despite saving the State billions each year through unpaid care, many caregivers struggle with inadequate respite services, low financial support and overwhelming emotional strain.

Having spent years caring full-time for Brian, Malcolm knows personally the physical and mental toll caregiving can take. Long waiting lists for respite care and a lack of resources leave many families exhausted and isolated.

The goal is to highlight these issues and call for meaningful change — including better respite services, proper financial support for carers and improved mental health resources.

Beyond Brian’s treatment, there is also a longer-term vision: to eventually bring these groundbreaking medical laser and stem cell therapies to Ireland so that others living with dementia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s may have access to innovative treatment closer to home.

At its heart, this campaign is a story of love, resilience and hope — not only for Brian, but for every family in Ireland living with the challenges of neurodegenerative illness and caregiving.

As we, Micheal, Muireann, Seosamh, Dara and Alice lovingly remember our Dad, Michael on the first anniversary of his death, we wish to acknowledge most sincerely the tremendous support and the sympathy that was shown to us following his untimely passing. The gestures of kindness alongside the generosity we received from his neighbours, friends and acquaintances were overwhelming. We wish to thank Michael’s siblings, extended family members and his dear friends, many of whom travelled across continents to be beside us and to help us navigate Michael's final journey.

We wish to thank everyone who came to Michael’s beloved Siopa Ceoil to pay their respects and those who shared their time and their talents in the most beautiful, comforting musical days of his wake.

Haunting melodies and tunes, stories and dance, laughter, love and tears filled the days and nights that we sat with our father for the last time.

Our Dad will forever be remembered for his warm kind spirit, for the lives he impacted and the memories he created during his time in this world.

Mark and Martine Celebrate The Magic of Dingle

Mark Stratton and Martine Moriarty launched their new children’s picture book, The Magic of Dingle, in April of this year. Their fourth collaboration is set in and around the Dingle Peninsula, drawing on Martine’s magnificent talent as a local artist and illustrator, and Mark’s skills as author and publisher.

This vividly illustrated picture book takes readers on a journey around the ancient and mystical lands of the Dingle Peninsula, immersing them in its fairy-tale magic, dreamlike beauty, and echoes of times gone by. The story features many of the things people have grown to love about the region, and includes touches of the Irish language on the beautifully hand- drawn maps and the educational pages at the back of the book.

Martine and Mark celebrated the launch with a glass at The Stonehouse Restaurant in Ventry, run by Martine’s son Kallam and daughter-in -law Clíona. Their previous books, which many readers will recognise, include The Dog from Dingle Who Lost His Bark, The Dingle Sheep Who Could Not Sleep, and How Now Dingle Cow. They have been working together since 2016, and many are saying that this is their best book yet!

There was a large attendance at Ard an Bhothair on Wednesday evening the 6th May for the Munster Council launch of the new Munster championship cup, Corn Pháidí Uí Shé.

Páidí’s former teammates turned out in force to honour their departed comrade. In all, seven decades of Kerry football were represented,with players ranging from Brendan Lynch to current captain Paul Geaney.

Patrick O'Sullivan, Kerry Chairman, referred to a long standing friendship between their respective families and remembered Páidí as a man who was always thoughtful,generous and accommodating.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

Dara Ó Cinnéide chaired the proceedings and his soft spoken bilingual eloquence perfectly captured the significance of the occasion.He recalled how as an emerging young footballer, he was inspired by Páidí, and how he had instilled a confidence in him and his teammates at a time when Kerry football was struggling to reassert itself following a long barren period. That barren period soon came to an end under Páidí’s stewardship and further success would follow.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

On Sunday the 10th May, Kerry defeated Cork in the Munster Final on a bright sunny day in Killarney. Kerry captain, Paul Geaney, stepped forward to receive the cup.I t was presented to him by Páidí Óg, Páidí Ó Sé’s grandson, who also happened to be the captain’s son. It was the perfect ending to the opening chapter in the life of Corn Pháidi Uí Shé.No doubt there will be many more to come.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Cup or no cup Páidí Ó Sé’s legend is secure. But the naming of the cup in his honour was a lovely gesture and was much appreciated by the Ó Sé family.

Call for nominations for the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2026

Lee Strand and Kerry Garda are delighted to announce details of the Lee Strand / Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2026. The awards are held for youths between the ages of thirteen and twenty one years and recognise the great contribution young people have made and continue to make to their communities in Kerry. The awards will be presented at an awards ceremony in the Rose Hotel, Tralee on Friday, September 18th, 2026.

This year twenty Merit Awards will be presented to individuals who have made a positive contribution to their community and make it a better place to live. A Group Award will also be presented to groups of two or more people who have made an impact to their community. The Special Achievement Award will be presented to an individual who has overcome difficult circumstances, has defied all the odds and whose commitment deserves recognition. A Community Safety Award will be presented to an individual who through crime prevention or a safety initiative/innovation has made their community a safer place to live.

The Overall Winner of the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement 2026 will also be presented.

Chief Superintendent Colm O’Sullivan stated “Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders. Their commitment to the communities that the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Awards recognise and reward, is certainly indicative of their future roles in forming and maintaining a caring and thoughtful society in an ever changing world. Leadership is difficult, but the resilience of our youth is remarkable; their initiative, their willingness to get involved, their ability to adapt, to mentor and deliver, in and for their communities, bodes well for all our futures. The annual awards continue our role in An Garda Síochána in developing and maintaining strong relationships with our youth in Kerry. This recognition and cooperation has a positive effect on society and as a whole and I would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to Lee Strand for their continued sponsorship and support for these worthy awards.”

Be Careful What You Wish For

What would the world be like if we could have everything we wanted? There has been a new horror film released recently dealing with that very question- Be careful what you wish for is the ultimate message.

While it sounds perfect, removing all friction from the world would fundamentally alter the human experience.

In a world where we lack for nothing, there would be no need for innovation, scientific discovery or problem solving, effectively halting human evolution.

Without struggle, scarcity or hardship society would become disconnected from the core emotions of empathy and we would lose the ability to care for and help each other.

Without limits we would be paralysed in our decision making- if all things are equally attainable the value of choice diminishes leading to chronic dissatisfaction and a loss of direction

The consequences of instant gratification and having every desire fulfilled would result in profound psychological and societal changes. The world would transform from a struggle for survival to existential stagnation. But realistically this is not something we have to worry too much about, most of us agree life happens and we take the punches.

However, practicing mindfulness and introducing awareness into the scenario offers a third possibility.

By living mindfully, we begin to observe where our attention is focused, how our perception is coloured and this knowledge allows us to widen the lens and notice all the things that are actually happening right now. Instead of reacting, this awareness allows us to choose our response. Therein lies our power and our freedom

Habitually our nervous system alerts us to all the threats and dangers posed to our physical safety, our sense of identity, our well being, our wants and needs. It activates fight or flight mode- protective, preventative, defensive, aggressive. This system works well when there really is a threat but in today's world we are all constantly in overdrive - bombarded with perceived threats and a narrative that if we work hard enough, have it all , control it all then we'll be ok, then we'll be happy. We believe this story because we've been conditioned to from day one and we haven't had enough time to pause and question the paradigm. We're too busy being productive, chasing success, playing by the rules. We are lost in the matrix. But when we experience the world mindfully it is possible to consciously focus on just this moment, and choose how to respond to it.

Meán Scoil Student Comes Top of the Class at SciFest

We are delighted to congratulate Jarlath Malachy Wruck on his phenomenal success at SciFest MTU 2026 in Tralee.

Competing against an outstanding field of 106 projects, our Transition Year student at Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh achieved the remarkable honour of winning the Overall Best Project Award at the SciFest event.

In an exceptional double achievement, Jarlath also received the Discover Space Award for the second consecutive year for his project: “Mapping the Invisible: Creating an Artificial Intelligence to Profile Dark Matter Halos from Galaxy Rotation Curves.”

This impressive research project demonstrated extraordinary originality, scientific depth, and academic maturity in the field of astrophysics.

We are also immensely proud that Jarlath’s teacher, Ilona O'Dowd, was recognised with the ESERO (European Space Education Resource Office Ireland) Discover Space Teacher Award in acknowledgement of her outstanding guidance, dedication, and commitment to supporting student excellence. We sincerely thank her for the invaluable support she has provided throughout this journey.

A special word of congratulations and appreciation must also go to Jarlath’s family, whose encouragement, support, and belief in his work have played such an important role in this remarkable achievement. Their continued support throughout his scientific journey has been invaluable.

As Overall Winner at MTU SciFest, Jarlath will now go forward to represent the school at the SciFest National Finals in Dublin this November.

Over the past two years, Jarlath has dedicated himself to advanced work in astrophysics, and we are incredibly proud of his hard work, determination, and the national recognition his research has achieved. This success is also a testament to the strength and dedication of our Science Department, whose continued commitment inspires and empowers students to excel at the very highest level in STEM education.

Congratulations once again to Jarlath, Ms. O'Dowd, the Wruck family, and all involved in this extraordinary achievement!

Trevis Joins Esteemed Guild

Dingle's Trevis L. Gleason who was recently made a member of The Irish Food Writers’ Guild. Membership is by invitation only to established food writers with an acknowledged and substantial corpus of work. The Irish Food Writers’ Guild was formed in 1990 to promote high professional standards of knowledge and practice among writers about food, nutrition, food history and related matters and to assist in the formulation of links and networks amongst all involved in the food industry. The Guild was established by a dozen founding members, all of whom were working as freelance food writers at the time. They saw the formation of the Guild as an opportunity to pool their collective knowledge, experience and ideas. The Guild’s current president is Georgina Campbell. Gleason is a multi-award-winning writer and culinarian. He is Cathaoirleach of the Corca Dhuibhne Food Network and Ambassador of the Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards. He has been published in the Irish Times, Irish Examiner, Irish Independent, The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine among others. His books include Chef Interrupted; Discovering Life’s Second Course in Ireland with Multiple Sclerosis (Coffeetown Press and Collins Press), Dingle Dinners (Collins Press, Sapphire Solutions, and The O’Brien Press), Burren Dinners (The O’Brien Press), Living Well with Multiple Sclerosis (Coffeetown Press), as well as a second edition of Burren Dinners (The O’Brien Press) due out in August 2026. Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh Success at Young Environmentalist Awards 2026.

Students from Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh, Castlegregory, have achieved outstanding national recognition after being named Overall Senior Winners at the Young Environmentalist Awards 2026, held at the RDS, Dublin.

The group also received the Senior Award for Biodiversity for their innovative project focused on the conservation of the Ringed Plover. The award-winning project, developed by MSLT Go Wild, combined education and conservation, raising awareness of the importance of protecting this vulnerable coastal species while also taking practical action to support its habitat along the local West Kerry coastline.

Speaking about the project, collaborator Martha Farrell of The Maharees Conservation Association praised the students’ commitment and approach:

“We were delighted to work with this inspiring group of Meánscoil Nua an Leith Triúigh students, their Principal Karen Blennerhassett and staff member Maura Cronin. The students understood the project brief from the start, they understood the power of collaboration and they were respectful of everyone who supported them. They showed creativity and determination and they’ve highlighted the plight of our Ringed Plover species very well – they are trying to breed on our coastline, they’re under real pressure and they need our support. We are so pleased to see this project be recognised nationally and we thank partners Analog Devices, MTU and the PHAROS Project.”

The MSLT GoWild Team paid tribute to Principal and Environmental Studies teacher Ms Karen Blennerhassett, Science teacher Ms Ilona O’Dowd, and SNA Maura Cronin, acknowledging their ongoing support, encouragement and guidance throughout the project.

This exceptional achievement was made possible through collaboration with a wide range of organisations and environmental experts. The school acknowledged the support of the PHAROS Project, MTU and Analog Devices, whose funding played a key role in enabling the work, as well as Breeding Waders EIP Officer Sarah Barry, NPWS Ranger Brid Colhoun, and Ger Scollard of the Irish Wildlife Trust Kerry.

A particularly valued partnership was formed with the Maharees Conservation Association, with special recognition given to Martha Farrell and Aidan O’Connor for their expertise, encouragement and continued guidance. The school also extended thanks to local students from Maharees who contributed valuable insights during a consultation session, strengthening the project through their local knowledge.

Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh also celebrated the success of a second student group, Shore Line Shapers, who received a Highly Commended Award for their presentation in the Eco-Art category.

A special mention was made of students Ciara O’Connor, Emma Miebach Aherne, Ethan Chambers, Saoirse Brosnan and Maddison Clifford, who represented the school at the national finals. The TY team involved in the project included Jarlath Malachy Wruck, Darragh Goodwin, Beatrice Dowling, Aoife Flynn and Grace Boland.

The school expressed sincere thanks to the Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA) for recognising and celebrating the creativity, commitment and environmental leadership of young people across Ireland.

School Principal and teacher, Karen Blennerhassett said they were all “immensely proud” of the students’ achievements, describing the success as a reflection of their teamwork, dedication and deep commitment to environmental stewardship in West Kerry.

The school community extended heartfelt thanks to all partners and collaborators involved, noting that the achievement represents a “truly unforgettable milestone” for Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh, Castlegregory.

BIODIVERSITY WEEK. The National Biodiversity Week takes place from May 15th to this Sunday May 24th. A series of events are planned at various venues throughout Corca Dhuibhne including An Diseart Gardens in Dingle. Information on all events available on the website www.biodiversityweek.ie.

SUMMER SOLSTICE RUN. Entries for the Ciarraí Thiar A.C. 5km and 10km Summer Solstice Run on Saturday June 20th are now open at www. eventmaster.ie.

Both runs start from Ladies Cross along the Back Road (now designated Kerrys First Quiet Road) to Ventry and are open to people of all ages and all athletic abilities.

BIRDSONG. Dúchas An Daingin are organising a Birdsong gathering Trí Gaeilge this Saturday May 23rd, meeting at the Old Hospital, Ashmount Terrace, for a trip around Cnoc a'Cairn at 4.30a.m. Full Details contact 0877004884. The birdsong can be really strong both morning and evening especially at this time of year so a great opportunity to learn more about the wildlife that surrounds us. Come suitably dressed and shod and on time on Saturday morning.

SPORT. Well done to the Dingle Bay Rovers Under 14 soccer team on reaching the National Cup Final recently. Unfortunately they came up against a very strong Limerick team who took the honours at the final hurdle. The Rovers team are made up of players from a mixture of various parishes in Corca Dhuibhne and all participate in other sports for their local clubs as well. The Rovers cater for a huge number of members playing in both male and female competitions at various age groups and have developed great facilities with two pitches in Gallarus. Good luck to the Rovers Management and members in their pursuit of sporting success in the year ahead.

TIDY TOWNS. Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7pm. Work includes litter collection, planting, painting, weeding and keeping our town in a respectable and presentable manner for locals and visitors alike.

We especially appeal to Residents Associations in the various estates as some do not appear to be as active as in previous years.

Tidy Towns are planning to revive The Doorstep Challenge Competition encouraging residents, business owners and associations to get involved in a friendly rivalry and help increase our marks in the National Competition as well. Further details on this shortly as we try and identify a sponsor or sponsors to back the effort.

PARKING. The Business Chamber again appeal to employees of various establishments to please park their vehicles on the outskirts of town and walk the short distances to their various work locations. Vehicles parked for long periods in the town centre take up valuable spaces each of which which could be used up to ten times daily by shoppers or short visit others who contribute to the business economics of our town. We certainly do not want to lose the heart of our town like other areas where the main business activity has shifted to the outskirts or lost indeed to neighbouring towns.

We are aware that a lot of parking spaces are occupied by nearby building and renovation activity over the past while in Dingle and we also appeal to these operators to consider parking for long periods off street and off town centre also. Míle Buíochas.

CAMP COMMUNITY SAFETY GROUP

The Camp Community Safety Group wishes to thank everyone who attended the public meeting held on Wednesday night regarding community safety in Camp and the surrounding areas.

A wide ranging and constructive discussion took place, and it was great to see such a large attendance present.

Residents are encouraged to join the Camp Community Safety WhatsApp group, remain vigilant and alert at all times, and share relevant information when necessary.

Donal Riordan thanked Sergeant Eric O’Shea, Dingle Garda Station for his attendance and contribution to the meeting.

Donal Riordan, Mairead Crean, and John Moynihan were thanked and their enthusiasm and initiative was greatly acknowledged.

The following committee members were elected: Donal Riordan, Mairead Crean, John Moynihan, Geraldine McCarthy, Joe O’Dwyer, Seamus Murphy and Shane Quirke.

DINGLE WAY CHALLENGE

St. Pats Blennerville are delighted to announce The Dingle Way Challenge to take place on Sunday 31st May. We expect 300 walkers this year. The route takes in the scenic Mac na Bo, Annascaul Lake, Inch Beach, Maumnahaltora Peat bogs, Killelton Oratory, Finglas River, Derrymore/Curaheen Reservoir, Tonevane finishing back at Blennerville to a heroes welcome, music and a BBQ.

Participants will receive medals and the casual and the enthusiastic walkers are all catered for.

CAMP CHURCH BICENTENARY

St. Mary's Church, Camp will celebrate its 200th anniversary this year. Bishop Ray Brown will celebrate Mass in St. Mary's Church on Friday, July 24th at 7:00 p.m. Over the coming months, the Church Community will mark this significant milestone with a series of special events and commemorations. Throughout its history, many men and women from our parish have answered the call to religious life. As part of our bicentenary celebrations, we would like to honour and remember these individuals, whose vocation was nurtured in St. Mary's. DARKNESS INTO LIGHT

Great turnout at Darkness into Light on Saturday morning in Camp. €1410 has been raised so far for Pieta House. Thanks to everyone who made it on the day and everyone who donated. It is very much appreciated.

HISTORIC OCCASION

It was a historic occasion on Sunday when Páidí Ó Sé’s grandson, Páidí Geaney, presented the Corn Pháidí Uí Sé to his father, Paul Geaney, the Kerry captain. Even more special was the fact that Kerry won the cup on its first outing in the Munster final against Cork on the day, at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. It is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest footballers and characters of our time. May the light, passion, and joy that Páidí brought to the field of play continue to inspire and shine upon Kerry footballers today and for generations to come. Suaimhneas síoraí dá hanam.

Féile Cheoil an tSamhraidh, May 28th to June 1st, features an exciting line-up of talented performers and groups including: Irish Guitar Quartet, Christopher Grundy and Michael Joyce, David Keating, Francesca De Nardi and Davide Forti, Louth Chamber Orchestra, Andreas Ioannides, Ava and Claudia Duffy, Kerry Choral Union, Dingle New-Music Choir and Orchestra, Dominican Choir, Barony Choir, Oriel Sounds and Cór Seoda Tíre. Do try and get to a performance or two as it will be an unforgettable musical experience!

Weekly events taking place include Tinteán Ceoil every Monday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in An Clochán / Cloghane. Dingle’s Farmer’s Market is back in action every Friday morning with the Castlegregory Farmer’s Market restarting at the end of the month. Turasóireacht Chorca Dhuibhne Cruinniú Ginearálta Bliantúil / Dingle Peninsula Tourism AGM Guest Speakers this year included: Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara, Ciarraí, NPWS; An Roinn Coimirce Sóisialaí, Department of Social Protection; Dingle Distillery; Bia Dingle and Bia Dingle Food Producers.

William Hunt, District Conservation Officer for Kerry North with the NPWS gave us a very interesting overview of their 2025 activities around our National Marine Park which included: Habitat condition assessments and mapping for Inch, Mount Brandon areas, Kerry Head Shoals with assessment ongoing for the Kerry Island. Other projects included a puffin census, dune habitat restoration, a biodiversity review initiated and Blasket seal population assessment initiated. Actions for 2026 across the Marine Park include: Trail maintenance, Signage, Freshwater pearl mussel – Owenmore River, Code of Conduct for responsible marine wildlife watching is being piloted locally, Nature talks – Cloghane-Brandon - February 2026, which w ere very well received, Nature talks are happening in Inch this month, and June will see seabird counts being carried out. Bernadette Cahill from the Department of Social Protection introduced TCD/DPT members to Employer Supports & Schemes through their INTREO Services. These Services help employers through all stages of the recruitment process including: Advertising vacancies for free on www. JobsIreland.ie; Matching employers with candidates; Scheduling and providing facilities for interviews where necessary; Organising Job Fairs; and Providing information on Support Schemes including: Work Placement Experience Programme; JobsPlus; Wage Subsidy Scheme; and Work and Access Supports including recruitment advertising on the European platform: www.eures.europa.eu

Dingle Distillery’s Senior Marketing Manager, Niall O’Connor, presented the global reach of the Dingle Distillery brand across the world where their products are now available in South America, Australia and New Zealand. In attending many whiskey festivals and events in so many countries, winning global awards for their Dingle Gin, Vodka and Whiskey, the Dingle Distillery brand brings the story of the Dingle Peninsula wherever they go! Of 294 world-wide distilleries, the Dingle Distillery Tour is ranked 9th in the world! Congratulations to all the team at the Distillery and if you are one of the few left, who have never had the opportunity to experience their tour, give yourself a treat and go and do it! You will be inspired.

Last but not least by any means, Mai Uí Bhruic, spoke about the Corca Dhuibhne Food Network and the Bia Dingle brand representing Food Producers from across the peninsula. Their vision and values are steeped in Meitheal and the traditions of farming, fishing and in producing incredible local food. Steeped in the heritage and traditions of Corca Dhuibhne, the Network is a dynamic, collaborative, food-focused association representing the whole of the Dingle Peninsula. “We are Farmers; Fishermen and families; Producers; Growers; Foragers; Chefs, Restauranteurs; Hosts; Guides; Partners; and Champions, joined in celebration of the food history and heritage of the Dingle Peninsula.” Their mission is to retain, attract, foster, and celebrate sustainable food producers, products, and traditions of the Dingle Peninsula and our surrounding waters. Mai then went on to introduce the Bia Dingle Showcase of local producers at the AGM: Annascaul Black Pudding, Bean in Dingle, Beoir

Chorca Dhuibhne, Crean’s Honey, Dingle Distillery, Dingle Doughnuts, Dingle Farm, Dingle Sea Salt, Dingle Spices, Ealú, Nourish, and West of Dingle Sea Salt. AMO Digital was also on hand to offer businesses advice on their Google and digital marketing.
